Wish I could see it! Anyone in the US able to watch it?
Sherlock (TV series) - Sherlock as Snow White and True Love’s Kiss
bug-catcher-in-viridian-forest:
INTRODUCTION
The Abominable Bride follows the rough pattern of a the Snow White and Sleeping Beauty fairy tales:
The princess and the prince meet;
The princess is trapped in her sleep by a curse;
The prince saves the princess. In this meta I will point out similarities between Sherlock and Snow White and muse on the possibility that Sherlock was awakened by True Love’s Kiss.
Read Sherlock as Sleeping Beauty for a comparative analysis with the other fairy tale.
I’m inclined to believe that the parallels to Sleeping Beauty are to be found in Sherlock’s mind palace, while the parallels to Snow White are to be found mainly in Sherlock’s reality.
There are also several parallels between Sherlock and other fairy tale or disney characters throughout the show (Fairy tales - Masterpost).
THE HEART
The Evil Queen wants the huntsman to take Snow White’s heart out (or other organs depending on the version), in order to to put it in a box or eat it.
Moriarty wants to burn the heart out of Sherlock.
MORIARTY: I’ll burn the heart out of you.
It could eventually be possibly related to Mary’s ACD canon treasure box.
THE POISONED APPLE
Snow White is famously poisoned by an apple given to her by the Evil Queen.
Moriarty gives Sherlock a red apple after saying:
MORIARTY: Every fairy tale needs a good old-fashioned villain.
Plus, here’s some quotes from Snow White
DOC: Why, the whole place is clean!
EVIL QUEEN: It’s apple pies that make the menfolks’ mouths water.
And when Moriarty breaks in 221b, in the video posted on John’s blog, he says:
MORIARTY: How clean is your house. Smell baking. It’s an apple pie.
Since Sherlock is fully clothed and it doesn’t seem like there’s nothing to snort or smoke drugs nearby, he would have probably taken at least the drugs ingested after he mounted on the plane orally, like you eat an apple (and opposed to injection which could instead be seen as a parallel to sleeping beauty).
There is also speculation that Mary might be working/have worked for Moriarty and gave Sherlock drugs while hugging him on the tarmac.
In Snow White, the red apple comes from a basket of green and yellow apples.
During setlock for Series 4, Claire Pritchard posted a picture of some fruit with the caption:
An unwelcome guest at the read-through ? A bug?????

Thoughts on setlock week 6: the short break.
Once again, just my musings on the past weeks events:
Skull-duggery. Arwel is hammering home an image, which he seems to like linking to the word ‘MOOD’ and that image is the skull. To me the skull is traditionally the sign of human mortality and I am suspecting that we have death come to visit in episode 1 leading into to it’s ramifications in ep 2.
Oh Canada! How it has haunted me this week. The evidence is mounting of a Canadian visit or a Canadian giant ruse. I don’t want this idea to run away with us just yet as it could be the crew playing with us, but the clues emanating from Twitter do deserve mention. We know Tom Guy the recce man was in Canada on behalf of the show, we assumed it was meeting with ep 2 director Nick. However, he did hashtag his Canadian tweets with the word recce. We had images of Toronto and Niagara Falls as he travelled. Then Arwel got into the act and did one of his daily ‘mood’ tweets with another image of Niagara Falls. If we get broloc signs at a Cardiff area airport for ep2 shooting I’ll start to think it may be true. I would imagine that if they do film overseas it will be done at the end of the block of 3 filming in UK, so July. Sue did say that filming would run till end of July, and with Martin’s film break taken into consideration [even though cancelled now] Sue was giving a hint to a longer filming period than usual. TPTB have said that filming abroad is a possibility, Dr Who does it, and Dr Who is a close model for Sherlock locations.
Read through. Another read through and no photo of our boys. So disappointing. Why start a tradition then drop it? Anyway it was held in London at the Diorama Studios, some people there took photos of BC which were nice, he looked all young and student like.
Drama over photo of ep 2 script. Skip this point if you have had enough of the AA event this week. Amanda tweeted a photo of her script without taking the precaution of placing a sheet of paper under the front cover. So we had a repeat of the Doug McKinnon script scramble with people trying to decipher. Firstly may I say that more than one person did this, simultainiously several setlockers, myself included, began to try to read the words on the inside of the script. It’s what we do as fans of a detective show, it’s what we do as encouraged by both cast [Mark] and crew [various] with their cryptic tweets, we have form of doing this very thing with a script and TPTB have discussed it publicly and admired us for it. Amanda over reacted, she admitted that she did, not a new thing, as she has a history of insulting fans. She reached out to ONE of the people who was trying to read the script, and they apparently forgave her for calling them a cretin and an arse hole. The rest of us received a group apology, of sorts. For me it’s not really Amanda that bothers me, she does this, she looks bad, it’s sad. No, the thing that angers me is the response from her fans and the consequences it has on people’s perception of setlock. It damages us. It lays waste to the validity of what setlockers do and why. I read the Twitter setlock tag last night and the horrific things random people were saying about those of us who setlock was staggering. A general perception of a minority group has been set: The setlockers are freaks that ruin things. Now I get the sycophantic AA followers, the need to be liked and acknowledged by an alpha female/celeb, but I don’t get the misconceptions of the general casual fandom when it comes to the slurs levelled against the setlockers. We do not ruin the show, we do not cause problems on set, we will not cause the show to be cancelled. All OTT accusations which have zero basis in actuality. When I see the quality of thought, dedication and respect in my own setlock community, the mature, intelligent people who work diligently on the clues, run their feet into the ground on locations, and respect that some things actually do need to stay secret for very important reasons, then I am personally affronted by the smearing of our reputation by idiots responding to Amanda’s rant with emotional, pack mentality, unsubstantiated insults directed at setlockers.
Anway, John and Sherlock are going to kiss in episode 2. The middle episode of each series has been the emotional propulsion for the show’s romantic arc. We have reached the point of no return on this issue and given the momentum building in the plot, as evidenced by incoming clues from setlock ep1 s4, I do think we will have the gay rainbow lights and bi flag colours on full glare this next episode. Not a great week in the fandom, but we move on and back to filming next week.
Great commentary on the week that was, as always.
Points if interest/pure conjecture:
I don’t know what I feel about an ep2 kiss but that’s just not the marker I’m looking for rather than any disagreement with the conjecture itself - for me they could hold that off to the final shot of the last episode of s5 & I’d trust them to make the arc work. Though I doubt that is what will happen.
What I definitely don’t anticipate and this is where I diverge from much tjlc commentary is I don’t think s4 is going to offer much in the way of light - even with a kiss. The more likely a declaration of mutual romantic love the darker it will likely be. I believe Mofftiss when they say they are going to an emotionally harder place and I anticipate that some of the pacing of the series will differ from what’s gone before. And if Moffat’s mantra is Golding’s “give them the happy ending they want but not in the way they expect it” then I would put it past him to want to deliver any romance in the least fluffy way possible. The more I see posts about a happy, domesticated johnlock on here the less I believe that’s what’s ahead. Some of the most overt signs of Sherlock’s feelings have been matched with anything but fluffy imagery. Love on this show - especially Sherlock’s - comes wrapped in pain, sadness and defeat. I will be surprised if we don’t get romantic feelings that dish up a very high level of angst.
And the read thrus: I have to wonder if there is someone in the read through room we are not meant to see & whose entire involvement is being kept completely secret. Candidates (attaching *no* level of likelihood):
a returning cast member like Andrew or Lara.
Or indeed someone less well known that is going to return with greater importance in the plot but whose presence would cast light on a previous aspect of the plot they don’t want fans to think about.
Or a new cast member: an actor very well known to the public that would draw a lot of attention and speculation and who by their recognition status would imply a fairly major role. Alternatively of course it could be the reverse and that there is someone not in the room for one or all of the episodes that we would expect to see that isn’t there.
Whatever the reason, I find what appears to be a total lockdown on the read thrus thus far to be a promising sign.
There was a lot of production visibility for TAB because the big secret they were trying to keep was it wasn’t really a Victorian episode at all. But this time their big secret is going to be something else. And that has me excited. In both TAB and TRF what was highly visible turned out to be far less consequential than onlookers presumed. In the case of TRF - everyone was talking about how Sherlock did it but that was not something Mofftiss ultimately intended to provide a definitive answer for. Meanwhile in interviews Mofftiss would later acknowledge that the fans were worried about John’s grief and of course that was of far greater consequence than proving how Sherlock survived the fall. Same goes for the wedding. Looks can be so deceiving.
I
always enjoy knowing that what we don’t get to see is the where the real revelations of deeper import lie.
And whenever we see BC exiting a building I wonder: who is leaving by a back door hidden inside a van?
Nice work as always, @welovethebeekeeper. I love these end of week run downs.I see the argument a lot that they didn’t give us a read through pic because there were people (or lack of people) in the room who would be spoily. But the thing is they could *easily* have just shown us Benedict and Martin, in front of a blank wall, with nothing else visible, you know? That’s effectively what they did for S3. And they skipped that for TAB as well, so I feel like there must be other reasons for it. (And I also don’t think heightened secrecy for attendees is an argument either–TPTB themselves can be, as they have been, the source of the pic) I won’t lie, it makes me sad not to get it, but I can’t be too annoyed with them for it because the London setlock pics were comforting in terms of the leads getting along, and they are giving us plenty of other teases via Twitter. (And btw I consider those “teases” to be generous gifts to the fandom, not rude clickbait teases as I see some downers suggest) Anyway, thank you for the summary as always, Patsy, and since I’m rambling already I’ll say I do agree with the kiss in ep2, and the relative overall lightness of mood in ep2 (with maybe a foreboding ending as in TSOT). Yes they’ve said it will be a dark series but they know viewers can’t take relentless darkness, and I do think the terror of ep3 will be accentuated if we’ve had soaring happiness for the couple prior. And also since I’m already rambling I am very very against a first kiss to end S5e3–not that I even buy that it will be the end of the show then necessarily but I feel like they really have to demonstrate that shows aren’t “ruined” by a couple being officially out (to even the most blind homophobes) by showing life going on as normal *after* that.
Wow! @gloriascott93 and @1895itsallfine, both great posts. I agree with many things you both have said.
Yes, I do think the romance will be wrapped in darkness, but I think they have to give it to us in the light and then pull it away. So I do expect a reveal, of some sort, soon. Then the darkness falls. I then expect it lifted again by end of s5.
The read through photo of BC and MC is notable by it’s absence, totally spot on. Something is going on, I think it may be the old PR trick of keeping the main romantic leads separated in pre publicity so their togetherness is craved by the public and thus the public want to watch the show/film.
Sherlock is a drama, and we are told the darkness is coming, which I believe. However Sherlock also has strong comedic elements, right the way through the writers use comedy to relieve stress and tension for the viewer. Look at the Moriarty confrontations, there are elements of sarcasm, jibes and down right dirty references in there. I expect the John and Sherlock first kiss to have very light, funny, elements to it along with the deeply serious resolution to over 135 years of sexual tension for the characters. It won’t be comedic mocking, it will be cute and adorable.
There has been rumours on twitter of a ‘well known actor’ being onset as a guest. Nothing to substantiate them of course. It could be fantasy. But if there is a special guest actor or actress on board TPTB have proven with TAB that they can hide the fact from the fandom and paps. Another obvious ruse could be a main cast member is not in the series but the actor/actress is there on set. Lock down on read through is a very promising sign I agree. Also the use of decoy will be in play as we saw them do this at the Bristol Language College, when Martin, Amanda and Mark exited and waved to fans, allowed pics to be taken, while the crew got BC out quietly with a cover over his head [to hide the modern wig]
As far as the emphasis on the important plot points, yes, I agree the writers switch parameters on us. With TGG we were all focused on the survival at the pool, with TRF it was the fall itself, with HLV it has been Mary, the baby and is John plotting behind her back. Therefore they will come at us in episode 1 series 4 with a totally different focus. We need to learn that lesson. Thanks for the great follow ups on my post. I value input from you both, always.

While I know that this says, ‘information is power’, I’ve always seen this scene as John arriving at a point where he has, ‘the power to change’, i.e. the power to leave Mary and be with Sherlock. And I just noticed the price for the book is £18.95. That makes me so happy.
‘Information is the power to change 1895.’ I honestly want to cry a bit whenever I see this. Hidden in plain sight… ‘I did tell you, but did you listen?’ I also love the bit at the top, ‘How to help yourself.’
