I’m puzzled

I really don’t understand why some people think that the fact they’re going to explore Sherlock’s past is bad news to canon Johnlock. I really don’t.

Care to enlighten me?

No bloody idea. Sherlock is a result of his past, and Sherlock is now head over heels in love with John. Sherlock’s capacity to love is immense. The past made him the man we know at this point in the story arc. Revealing past traumas or events will give insight but will not change the trajectory of the John/Sherlock romance. The past events have already occurred, the results are already in evidence. No worries.

Agreed. Also, just because showing what made Sherlock what he is would be something relatively unexplored in prior adaptations doesn’t mean that’s the only new/original slant Moftiss had planned. There have been WAY too many signposts to johnlock for the story to make any sense without it.

The mirroring. Not just the subtextual mirroring, Sherlock and John dressed//positioned//acting similarly, Jim and Mary dressed//positioned//acting similarly.

The ACTUAL MIRRORING, the reflection.

Over Jim’s shoulder is Sherlock’s reflection drawing closer.

Over Mary’s shoulder is Sherlock’s empty chair coming more into view.

Over John’s shoulder, the skull.

Over Sherlock’s shoulder, the light.

The way he imagines John and Mary having a confrontation by the fireplace, then reimagines it later between himself and Jim.

And I know everyone knows Mary is wearing mourning clothes

But guess what? SO IS JIM.

How did I not register that Jim was in mourning clothes as well?! This is amazing.

Cool. Also, consider the mirrored conversations. Mary confronts John and Jim confronts Sherlock about the very same thing; the unspoken love and attraction each man has for his best friend. Of course, this is all done obliquely (failing marriage) or in subtext (gun fellatio), but the issue at the core of these discussions is the same, IMHO.

Because there’s a point to Mary saying

“You don’t even know my name!”

and Sherlock later on in the same episode gladly offering his own

“William Sherlock Scott Holmes”

YES!!!

A Brand of Gold by aquabelacqua

I love first time fics when they’re done well– in character and a slow, natural build. This brand new one is brilliant!

After recent events, I think we may have been a little bit amiss in earlier discussions regarding references to The Dying Detective. S4E3: THE CRYING DETECTIVE (aka a six year old and his dog) is all I have to say right now.

All three eps are gonna be variations on a theme.

S4E1: The Trying Detective
Sherlock is pretending he’s got his shit together. (Surprise twist: he doesn’t!)

S4E2: The Dying Detective
No, really, he’s actually pretty sick here. Someone should probably get him to hospital or something.

S4E3: The Crying Detective
You thought it was bad watching him become violently ill? Hahaha, just wait until you see his childhood…

ScreenTerrier: Casting Call for a Young Sherlock

ScreenTerrier: Casting Call for a Young Sherlock:

An even younger Sherlock. Let’s watch for possible young versions of his parents in the casting announcements.

Wow, this is interesting! Flashbacks to a 6-year-old Sherlock, and presumably not just minor either since filming is for 5 weeks. Redbeard!

Fic Rec: A garden party in Sussex

Just read this lovely fic. I love the ‘fake boyfriends’ trope so I’m happy to find a new one. Highly recommended!
