The mirroring. Not just the subtextual mirroring, Sherlock and John dressed//positioned//acting similarly, Jim and Mary dressed//positioned//acting similarly.
The ACTUAL MIRRORING, the reflection.
Over Jim’s shoulder is Sherlock’s reflection drawing closer.
Over Mary’s shoulder is Sherlock’s empty chair coming more into view.
Over John’s shoulder, the skull.
Over Sherlock’s shoulder, the light.
The way he imagines John and Mary having a confrontation by the fireplace, then reimagines it later between himself and Jim.
And I know everyone knows Mary is wearing mourning clothes

But guess what? SO IS JIM.

How did I not register that Jim was in mourning clothes as well?! This is amazing.
Cool. Also, consider the mirrored conversations. Mary confronts John and Jim confronts Sherlock about the very same thing; the unspoken love and attraction each man has for his best friend. Of course, this is all done obliquely (failing marriage) or in subtext (gun fellatio), but the issue at the core of these discussions is the same, IMHO.
