The Best 21st Century Horror Films For your Halloween Spooking: Volume 01

The Best 21st Century Horror Films For your Halloween Spooking: Volume 01

You don't need Halloween to enjoy a good horror flick. But it sure does help add to the atmosphere! And what is a good horror film without the right atmosphere, be it a dark theater or simply watching it alone at home? You could probably name the classics but what about the 21st century? There have been some simply brilliant terror flicks that have left you queasy, uneasy or just afraid to look behind you.

But horror is not a singular entity, is it? When you say you love horror movies, what...

Two books of the Vikramaditya Veergatha - Guardians of the Halahala and the Conspiracy at Meru

Last year, I started my review of author Shatrujeet Nath's 'The Guardians of the Halahala' with these words - "The Guardians of the Halahal is unlike any book you have read in the Indian historical fiction genre till date. The beginning of a trilogy, it effortlessly combines religion, legend, history and even one of the most iconic characters from our fables, bringing a...

Somebody Caption That Dog!

A fortnight ago, I posted a picture of Snoopy the beagle and myself on Facebook (for those who are wondering, I am the one with the sunglasses). I wanted to see the creative captions that arose from my group of friends and yes, they did not disappoint.

Snoopy the beagle trying to stop me from driving the car

I am sharing a few here, which I have taken the liberty of categorizing.

POLITE QUERIES

Recipe - Sannas ( Goan or Mangalorean Steamed Rice Cakes )

Mangalorean Sannas.
Just saying those two words together makes my mouth water.
Popular along the Konkan coast of South India, Sannas also go by the name Goan sannas or Goan steamed rice cake, if you want to get really fancy about.

Sannas or steamed Rice Cakes
Compared to idlis, sannas are more fluffier and porous, thus absorbing gravies and curries better. They are usually served alongside popular Goan or Mangalorean pork and chicken dishes, the common associates being:
Pork vindalooPork sorpotelPork baffat Tradi...

Bhool Gaya Nirbhaya

Last month, a woman who had been giving her opinion regarding the need for a war against Pakistan shared a screenshot of a private message she had received from a stranger who disagreed with her views. There were the usual insults - go to Pakistan, you b*tch, people like you should be yadayadayada  etc
He ended the message with three words and a question mark: Bhool gaya Nirbhaya?
(Translation - Have you forgotten Nirbhaya?)
The reference, of course, is to the 2012 Delhi gangrape that...

Letters of Love 2017

Letters of Love is back.
Last New Year, we brought a smile on the faces of thousands of children stuck in a war they did not ask for. And we did it from the comfort of where we sat without making a single extra effort.
We gave them hope as the New Year began. I use the word 'we' very cavalierly because the truth is, I am just one of you - a person who took a picture of himself and shared it on social media.

The true architect behind this selfless endeavour to let the war-ravaged young refugees o...

5 Key Steps to a Healthy Heart

Honestly? Me offering you advice on maintaining a healthy heart on #WorldHeartDay is like a saint advising you on how to make cocktails or like asking Donald Trump for tips on being compassionate and articulate.
I'm a tubby chubby old fella who regularly follows the policy of the universe - we are both constantly expanding. The difference though is that I am aware of what needs to be done to change my life around. And I do want to change now.
The World Health Foundation informs us that 80%...

Can Compassion be Aggressive? #1000Speak

As a teenager, I used to give a lot of cards.
Birthday cards, friendship cards, 'simply for no reason' cards... you name it. I actually had a whole bag of them with me, ready to whip out and use at a moment's notice. For friends, I was the go-to guy to get a card at the last moment. For me, giving cards was a genuine expression of respect, friendship and love. I liked the set of people around me and I was not scared to let them know how I felt, ably aided by Hallmark.
A single act by someone wh...

The Best Movies Based on a Stephen King Story

I always remember a good spell of spin bowling in test cricket when I think of a typical Stephen King novel. The bowler does not look to get you with the first ball or even the second. We weaves a spell, tossing the ball all over the place and tiring you down by keeping your concentration levels high till you finally tire and drop your guard. Boom! Suddenly your off stump is off the ground.
Stephen King is like that. There is never an urgency to his novels. If he needs to tell you about the co...

Can I Convince you to keep this Note in your Wallet?

Can I interest you in keeping an extra note in your wallet?
It is slightly bigger in dimensions than your average 1000 rupee note but I promise you, it can be a lot more valuable. No, it does not have the face of a Gandhi or a Washington upon it, I fear, though you are free to add your best drawing to it.

Would you like to see my note? Yes? First hear me out.

As per the most recent available statistics, 1 life is lost every 4 minutes in India due to road traffic accidents alone. Over half a mill...
