ONline Movement OFFline Impact

I've been blogging since 2003. I really think that it's one of my 'lucky' moment when I decided to 'move forward' with blog writing. It's been a long way from 2003, my blogging style has evolved. From a diary type of writing to journal of reactions and now to expertise blogging, where I focus on blogging about things I know the most like writing, business, etc. For me, even though blogging is an online activity but the impact could affect our offline side of life.

For couple of years, social media or social networking sites been widely used among Indonesian youth. The number of young people under 30 is more than 50% of the population. Some of them are on Facebook. More than 30 million to be exact. We're also one of the most twitting nations. With that impressive number and perfect combination for harnessing creativity, we do really have a big hope for the future of our nation.

Where do we start? Combining blogging and social media activities is one of the ways. We all love updating status because it's easy and it's short. As short as 140 characters sometimes. But what's happened when we need to speak more about our insights and ideas? We go to blog. Blog will always be the home point of our online presence and social media open the doors for blog content to find its way to relevant audiences like never before. That way, blogging and social media always come hand in hand. I was so excited with my new share button in the top of my post, now it has counter, Google+ and Tumblr share too :D That's make me easier to broadcast my blog content to all over my networks.

I want to highlight some of my activities related to blogging and social media in these couple of weeks.

ASEAN Blogger community gathering. Before going further, I'd like to say Happy Belated Birthday ASEAN :D Thank you for no VISA policy around most South-East Asia countries :p ASEAN Blogger community aim to create understanding between ASEAN bloggers all over the region and also promote friendship among ASEAN countries. I'm totally supporting this initiative (kudos to initiators Mbak @ajengkol , Mas @imanbr , Mas Amril , and friends), because I felt the positive experience with fellow ASEAN bloggers I've met at ASEAN Blogger Conference in Kuala Lumpur several months ago.

Bincang Edukasi. It's started as a concern for education in Indonesia and how we think technology (internet and social media) can help education issues in our country. That's why we created a bimonthly meetup especially for grass root movements in education. The first event was in Jakarta and the second was at @atamerica Jakarta. We invited some of people who have been using the power of social media to spread the light. Read the review about Bincang Edukasi event here

Pink Mosques. After hosting Girls in Tech Indonesia event, Lisa came up to me with an idea of traveling to 30 mosques in Jakarta during Ramadan (inspired by 30mosques in USA). The idea grow and we invited Emie on our team. We decided that this won't be only on Ramadan project and the mosques also can be from all over the world. So excited to visit the mosques and get a closer look to a place that we sometimes take for granted (just because there are a lot of mosques surround us). Check out interesting stories we found on each mosques.

Last but not least, ON | OFF 2011. I'm selected as ChairWoman of ON | OFF 2011. For you who's not familiar with the name of the event, ON | OFF 2011 actually the equivalent of Pesta Blogger, only for wider audience and expect a bigger impact. This year theme is "Ideas Meet Opportunities". It's going to be a 2 days event, the first day will be all about collaboration. There will be seminars, breakout sessions and matchmaking session where you can meet with a lot of people who can help you execute your ideas. They could be an investor, a publisher, people from government, people from organizations, fellow blogger that can be your potential partner to do business or social movements, etc. Second day will be all the fun, the Pesta Blogger, with community festivals, entertainment, winner announcement of competitions, and more.

ON | OFF 2011 will also go to 10 cities this year with the support of US Embassy with the name of ON | OFF CHAT 2011. The first city will be Solo and the first topic is about education. Let's learn from our friends Agus Sampurno @gurukreatif   and Ainun Chomsun @pasarsapi   on how they use the internet to change mindset, give new knowledge and opportunities for fellow onliner. The event is supported by @akbersolo >> click here for more info about the event also follow @onoffID  on twitter

I am happy to be part of such a powerful event, it's a big responsibility that I'm willing to take because I believe in how individual power can make a difference to our society.  Thanks to excellent team at ON | OFF 2011 and support from sponsors, we're going to start our journey and we're appreciating your support for a better Indonesia!

When you believe in what you're doing and use your imagination and initiative, you can make a difference.

-Samuel Dash

Spirit from Regional Entrepreneurship Summit 2011

The Regional Entrepreneurship Summit talks about entrepreneurship, but it's really talk about dreams -Hillary Clinton

Lucky me to be invited to Global Entrepreneurship Program Indonesia (GEPI) – Regional Entrepreneurship Summit (RES) in Grand Hyatt, Bali from 22 – 24 July 2011 represent #StartupLokal.

In Bali I was staying and spend time with the amazing girls from WomenPreneur Indonesia community @womenpreneurind. From them, I see a whole new world of offline business, and from me they see a whole new world of online business (digital startup), so we kind of amazed by one another :D

With great Indonesian womenpreneurs

I want to share you several points that caught my attention in RES event.

Wearing batik at the conference

I was very fascinated with Ibu Mari Elka Pangestu keynote speech. There are a lot points that make me nodded. And I must say to Anne, the girl from NGO beside me, "She can read my mind." :))

Ibu Mari Elka Pangestu delivering her fantastic speech

Ibu Mari said, "Real role of entrepreneurs stretches beyond business, because entrepreneurs great assets are their idea, creativity and innovation. Entrepreneurs tackle group problems of poverty and inequity and their innovations enable us to have a better life as well as to lead from development, so it is also about reducing poverty."

She also mentioned the terms of productive poor and it struck me. The 70% productive poor are women. They are poor but that it doesn't mean that they are not productive. They can be productive if you give them training to the point that they can become entrepreneurs. It's a very eye opening statement.

Eric Schmidt from Google said that Indonesia has a loud democracy, a flourishing society, and an integrated media. Thank you Mr. Schmidt. Indonesian freedom of expression is something we should be proud of. BBC said Indonesia is the best place in the world to start a business, and I think it's a sign for all of us to maximized our potential.

The lessons I learned on the second day panel discussion with social entrepreneurs like Tri Mumpuni: find out what's the problem in society and offer solutions.

Tri Mumpuni saw problems on how Indonesian people in rural area are less developed than the urban. She analyzed that it could be because the lack of access of technology, because there are no electricity in those areas.

She & her husband then starting to find solution, helping villages to create and manage their own electricity, using it for their village development to the point where PLN from the government buy the electricity from them and the fund can be used to build schools and access to education. Amazing!

Notes from the handsome and charming Pak Gita Wirjawan (ehm), chairman of Indonesia's Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), he said the key of success are the confident to take risk and not afraid to make mistakes (as long as you learn from it and don't do the same mistake again), education (never stop learning), networking (don't be timid) and luck that you get from opportunities meet preparation.

The most interesting in day 3 of the conference was the break out session about womenpreneurs. Of course, the nature of women is we love to talk. And our session lasts longer than any other breakout sessions :))

Quoting secretary Clinton, "And we particularly want to encourage women entrepreneurs, because, as the minister said, no economy can thrive if it leaves half the population behind. In fact, a recent United Nations study estimated that in the Asia Pacific region, the untapped potential of women has cost the region more than $40 billion in lost GDP over the last decade. So we're supporting new micro finance projects, building peer networks, and offering mentorships with American businesswomen."

Secretary Hillary Clinton

Board of speakers: entrepreneurs, investors, NGOs

I totally in sync with Secretary Clinton and Ibu Mari Elka. I also strongly believe in promoting technology as catalyst for women development, either in personal area or in business.

From my conversation with Mbak @bril, editor-in-chief Sekar magazine, Indonesian young women already familiar with social media (we're #2 Facebook Users after USA), but they have no idea on how to use technology more than chat or status update. For the older women, the problem is different. They're afraid and don't want to complicate their life with technology hehe. That's the challenges.

From the breakout session I've learned that, women entrepreneurs face the same problem all over the world, one of them is the fear of failure (self confidence in building business). Aside from training & education, Indonesian women need more mentors & role models for womenpreneurs that they can look up to. So, women(tech)preneurs, if you are there, show up and be an inspiration for others.

"The big questions finally is how can we have a program and an ecosystem for this entrepreneurs that makes the good idea to help them turn these ideas into reality and help them to nurture it for it to become sustainable," said bu Mari Elka.

As one of initiators of @StartupLokal, co-founder of @projectEden  and also a woman, I feel the urge to do something. I immediately request a quota in @projectEdenincubation space special for women founders (which already approved by my partners, thank you very much). And after Eid, @startuplokal plan to create a meetup with topic "Women Founders" where we will invite some women tech startup founders in Indonesia and we're going to throw a pitching session special for women who have great ideas, hopefully from there they can find partners (as there are many great technical people in #StartupLokal community) or of course if it's fit with @projectEdenvision, some of them can also join the incubation

Meanwhile my friendship with the girls from Womenpreneur Indonesia community still going strong, just had a followup lunch with some of them, and they plan to invite me to speak at some of their events. Hope I can help spread the sparks!

With the girls enjoying Bali sunset

Indonesia now only have 0.38% entrepreneurs of our population while Malaysia has 3% and Singapore has 7%. We need the minimum 2% of population to be entrepreneurs to gain nation's prosperity. As entrepreneurs create jobs and change life one person at a time.

We still have plenty of room to grow, more than 50% of population are young people under 29 years old, and we have the biggest market out of 650 million people in South East Asia. All we need to do is starting. Big or small business, the most important thing is to start moving. Because as you move, no matter how small step you take, you'll be 'lucky' - Create Your Own Luck!

With Mr. Djauhari Oratmangun Director General for ASEAN affairs after his closing speech. He really make sure I'd put this photo on my blog :))

I know not all of us can be billionaire, but as Tarun Khanna from Harvard Business School said, "It is better to create billions of entrepreneurs." I couldn't agree more!

Happy entrepreneurs after closing ceremony

Wanted: A Stylish Car

Setahun terakhir ini penampilan saya berubah menjadi cukup modis. Tapi mobil saya tetap tidak berubah. Sebuah family car yang culun. Supir saya saja pernah berkomentar, "Bu, mobilnya udah nggak sesuai dengan penampilan." :)) *dem*

Akhirnya pas Indonesia International Motor Show 2011 (IIMS), saya sempatkan mampir untuk survey kecil-kecilan, termasuk cari tahu soal harga dan test-drive.

New @Mazda2_id has been on my mind for couple of months. The white one. I think it's so pretty and stylish. Makanya I'm so excited to test drive the car.

Cool!

Peter Pezaris & Multiply

It's an honor for me to meet Peter Pezaris, the founder and CEO of Multiply.com, also David Hersh, Chief Product Officer and Daniel Tumiwa, Country Manager Indonesia, at Multiply.com office warming event.

A little bit about Multiply quoted from their website:

From its origins as a place to share photos, videos and more with people you care about in real life, Multiply has evolved into a vibrant Social Shopping destination that connects online merchants with shoppers interested in all kinds of products and services, from clothing and jewelry to electronics and appliances.

Launched in 2004, and headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida, USA, Multiply is also the second largest social network in Southeast Asia, with millions of additional users in the US, Brazil, India, and more, where friends and family continue to share their memories, their stories, their reviews, and their shopping recommendations.

I wrote a book titled "Membuat Toko Online dengan Multiply" or "Making Online Store with Multiply" long before Multiply decided to be a social commerce platform. I saw the trend in Indonesian Multipliers that they're starting to create store out of the complete features of Multiply.com (where guestbook, photo album, and not to mention blog engine is already included in one package) and my publisher decided that we should create a how-to book about it. Of course there are controversy over Multiply Stores that time, as Multiply actually forbid people using their blog to do commercial activities. But they eventually listen to their costumers (their biggest market), and evolve into a social commerce platform like what we see today. Multiply has evolve to grow.

And I'd like to congratulate once again on the opening of the Multiply office in Indonesia and I really hope Multiply can contribute to the growth of small businesses in Indonesia. Have fun!

Have Idea? Can't Execute? Find a Technical co-Founder!

I heard this a lot from people who want to start their own digital startup:  "Ollie, I have ideas, but I can't do programming. I can't execute my ideas!"

The answer is simple: collaborate! Find a technical co-founder. Where to find them? Go to networking events for IT people. One of them is #StartupLokal meetup that we run  every month. Info of our next events would be in http://startuplokal.org and twitter @startuplokal stay tune!

Here are points from http://startupgenome.cc/

Solo founders take 3.6x longer to reach scale stage compared to a founding team of 2 and they are 2.3x less likely to pivot.
Business-heavy founding teams are 6.2x more likely to successfully scale with sales driven startups than with product centric startups.
Technical-heavy founding teams are 3.3x more likely to successfully scale with product-centric startups with no network effects than with product-centric startups that have network effects.
Balanced teams with one technical founder and one business founder raise 30% more money, have 2.9x more user growth and are 19% less likely to scale prematurely than technical or business-heavy founding teams.
Most successful founders are driven by impact rather than experience or money.

Inspired and copied from @nataliardianto's email :))

Create Your Own Luck

At Grab Your Luck & be a Winner seminar by @BongChandra, there are 2 'opening' talk show with @PritaLaura the famous anchor, and me @salsabeela. Compared to Bong Chandra & Prita Laura, I am nobody. How can I speak in the same seminar with the famous and successful people like them?

Let's enlarge our view and we could see the organizer of this event: Hakuna Matata. Hakuna Matata products are t-shirt with motivational message in it. I met the owner of Hakuna Matata @dithadoank when I speak at The Urban Mama entrepreneurship  seminar at @america2 months ago.

Usually after I speak, there are people who personally come to me and shoot me with spesific questions about their business. Ditha is one of them. In that 1 or 2 minutes conversation, I told her to bundled her t-shirt with a motivational seminar and closed our short conversation with a message: "Just Action!". And for her, it's like a command.

To be honest, I totally forgot we ever met, 'til one day Ditha message me and she said she want me to speak at a seminar she's going to make. I met a lot of people that I'm trying hard to remember her face and associate with her business. I remember it blurry. We met and chat for only 2 minutes!

Then I finally meet her again yesterday, with bunch of people coming for an event she make for the first time, with 2 great inspirational people: Prita Laura & Bong Chandra, with all her family surround her. I salute her and so proud of her.

While listening to Ditha speak to me with excitement, I try to hold my tears, I'm overwhelmed of how words can move people that far. I told her: "A lot of people come to me for advice, only a few totally act on it. And you're one of them!" People like her, motivate me to do more and make me realize that all what I'm trying to say all these times are actually heard and indeed matter for others.

She has created her own luck! She make her first move & open the gate of success, to a bigger opportunity.  From this moment on, things will only be better and greater for her & Hakuna Matata!

My Style Metamorphosis

People said I'm fashionable, such a hijabi fashion icon, trend setter (that make polem style popular hehe), but I don't born this way. In fact, a year a go, I don't even close looking like this. I was 10 kgs overweight & always wear boring & 'safe' stuff. After a year, I learned that fashion is more than just a matter of appearance. It's also would boost your self confidence, make you comfortable with yourself so you'll be able to focus on inspire people with your vision and insights, make people respect you more, and when people did respect, they will listen to whatever you said.

I also learned that, the key in fashion is confidence to do mix and match. You wear 2 piece of clothes, you're ok. But when you add extra 2 outfits with you, you're fab.

Check out my fashion tips here

So, now I'm going show you my style metamorphosis. Losing 10 kgs helps a lot, if you want, you can  ask @LangsingMulus how to do that. But the key is always self confidence.

January 2010, 10 kgs heavier, tanner, standard fashion style, don't know how to wear makeup properly

May 2010, started losing weight but I don't realize it. Still wearing my old clothes so it looks baggy.

July 2010, realizing that I lose a lot of weight, start shopping for new clothes and experimenting

September 2010, start to understand the importance of accessories. And also marking the first time I endorse a fashion brand: Levi's. Here I found out that I'm now a size 26 of Levi's jeans (before fitting, I wear a size 33 jeans) :))

February 2010, playing with colors and found out that unique bottom (pants & skirt)  will sealed the deal and nude shoes can never be wrong

April 2010, I learned how to do proper eye makeup for my Chinese eyes :D

May 2010, historical! As I start wearing polem (bangs) style hijab by @CasaElana :)) It makes me look like my (young) age, which is around 16 :p

June 2011, wearing the trend, sensing the trend. I wear stripes and red, even before ELLE mentioning it :p

July 2011, being on FIMELA.com fashion spread is beyond my wildest imagination! From total zero to a sort of model, HUGEEE leap for me :D

My journey shows that looks can be altered. You can be pretty or ugly in a snap. So, when choosing a life partner, don't go just for look. Also don't leave 'em solely because whatever happened to their physical appearance. Physical things are temporary.

Up 'til now, when I see a 'plus size store', I always tempted to come in, because in me, it's always been that same old simple average girl, only this time, the girl looks a little bit… better :D

I'm on TV for Indosat Mobile TVC ad

Suddenly for these couple of days, my friends (from high school friends to my business partners), family (spread to all extended family), my twitter followers, FB friends, my parents friends, in short: everybody that knows me, shocked to see my presence on @IndosatMobile tv commercial. And I'm laughing hard to their various hysterical reactions.

The shooting process is not easy, especially for me who's unexperienced with these kind of stuff. Who would have thought that for a 15 seconds ad, you should prepare for bunch of outfits (a lot of people asked why I didn't wear my polem style, well, it's because I can't. I would look a lot younger and won't fit the audience the ad will target), makeups, sets, remembering 'the line', expression and movement, spend a whole day to get the perfect take. But of course, all of these make a great valuable experiences.

I learned a lot from people on the set. They're very supportive, and they work really hard. I can't imagine working in tv industry. If you asked if I'm going be an actress :)) Well, I'm now quite happy with my writing career, so I'm not gonna switch anytime soon :))

The Rise of Creativitiy

There's a lot of events these days using the word 'creative'. It's good because people start to realize the importance of listening to your right brain, instead of just using left brain like what we've been doing all these times. But I'm pro of balancing the usage of left and right brain.

I have a bachelor degree in IT and I was a web developer for years. I'm a geek. But I also write romantic novels. I also love drawing manga, and one of my dreams is to become a fashion designer. I'm not a right brainer nor left brainer, I'm an in-between brainer :))

At the launch of an ebook titled 'Traveling with Creativty' by @TwiTalkID- a book about creativity from 4 (who considered successful) creative people like Enda Nasution (prominent Indonesian blogger), Adhitia Sofyan (Musician start his career from YouTube), Leonard Theosubrata (owner of Brightspot, Indonesian local brand marketplace) and me (from writers perspective, I'm a writer of 20 books) – at the event, I said to @pungkas that I'm the kind of right brainer that always put a little sense of left brain in everything I do. I use a method that I called: mechanical creativity. For example, if I want to make a book, I won't wait for mood or inspiration, I'll look for them. I'll create them. Then I make a target on when to finish, so I can write on regular basis, consistently every single day.

This week is a very hectic but exciting week because Pekan Produk Kreatif Indonesia (PPKI) 2011 (Indonesia's Creative Product Week 2011) is ON! I was there for the straight 4 days of the events for various reasons! One day to represent @StartupLokal

The other time to represent @NulisBuku (to launch our special for PPKI 2011 book project #MyHomeTown that is written in 4 days by over 100 people!), @ProjectEdenand one time is to talk about myself as a creative person :))

Friday July 8th, is also one of the craziest days when I have to be on 3 stages in one day. One of them is in different location. Friday traffic in Jakarta is impossible that I need to use motorcycle taxi! Thank God I can make it on time for all the events ^_^

Having a great time speaking at FIMELA & Hijab Scarf event: Empowering women through blogging. Lovely to meet my favorite girls and also well known bloggers  @FifiAlvianto @HannaFaridl @istribawel and @nuniek. Unfortunately I have to race to the next event that I can't stay longer. Hopefully we can chat more, ladies ^_^

Last but not least is #StartupLokal Meetup v15: Investor Idol powered by Project Eden. We invited startups to pitch their ideas and judges from @ProjectEdenwill give either red or green signboard to filter them to the next step: power lunch with the investors from @ProjectEden.

At lunch time, I was in the same table with LocalBrand & PointBump. Giving them insights and hear their plans for their startup. Thank you StartupLokal team: @nataliardianto @nuniek @oleeoebi @bayu99 @ilmanakbar to make the event fab!

Good luck founders for the next pitching round at IDEAfest this upcoming July 21st! We're from @ProjectEdenalso very excited to hear your vision! Ps: I personally consider the business models and the founder behind a startup. So, it's the profitability & personality!

I'd like to express gratitude to #PPKI2011 Indonesia Kreatif team for making all these happen, especially to @fwulansari congrats, you've done a great job! I need to learn a lot from you! To @emiralda thanks for always been there for me to solve my problems :)) See you at the next PPKI!

Money Diary

I'm inspired with an article from Marie Claire magazine about women's money diary. It's actually important to have one, because we will find out which area really draining our money and we could be more careful, if of course, we already decide to be wise on money (like me now hehe).

As a 28 years old single girl who work as a writer & entrepreneur, here's pretty much my (personal) money diary.

Home

I stay in my own house. I bought with bank loan & I still need to pay monthly IDR 4.000.000 'til 5 more years. My house is in a very strategic area, near universities and shopping mall, in Depok. With the high property price, after 5 years, I can imagine myself renting my house out to people so I can have passive income ^_^

Bills

I take this as regular stuff that I have to pay. I should do my routine favorite investment, buying golds. My internet connection IDR 450.000. Credit Card bills (may vary). Salaries for my homeworkers. Operational for my car IDR 1.000.000. My routine donation.

Meal Plans

I usually don't have budget in this. If I'm at office, I could only spend IDR 20.000 for lunch. But if I'm outside, I would spend minimum IDR 80.000 per meal. I hate to pay overpriced meals but in Jakarta it's unavoidable. Cooking and bring your meals from home is way much cheaper. For a week it would only cost max IDR 200.000 from my experience. I just hate the headache of listing daily menu (of course I'm not cooking, my home assistant will) :))

Weekends

For me all day is weekend hehe so there's no special budget for weekends. But if that's mean having fun budget, well, my only definition of having fun is shopping (books, clothes, etc) :P And I don't have special budget.

Only in Jakarta

Parking is expensive. Everyday I should pay around IDR 20.000 for parking. I guess there's nothing like this in other cities. Well, everything in general is more expensive though (like food) :p

Big Splurge

Traveling. I feel the need to travel out of town or country every month. I just love airports :)) For every travel plan, I spend minimum IDR 2.000.000. I must say I splurge on books too. Every time I go to bookstores, I have to buy books.

Fashion

I shop a lot, but I pay attention to the price of what I buy. I value my money in it. I only buy expensive basics in some famous brands. For the rest of outfit, I would search in cheaper places like ITC, Matahari, Centro and my favorite of all: Pasar Senen *chuckle* When with IDR 200.000 expensive brands can give me nothing, ITC can give me 1 or 2 clothes, Pasar Senen can give me 20 hehehe. Lovin' it. Of course, you can only get it with a little sweat :p

Of course this is not all… still there's 'unexpected things' like unexpected sale at Mango :)) But this can pretty much show me that I enjoy my life too well that I never set a budget :)) If I could save from my traveling, expensive meals and fashion (I can't save on books), maybe I could invest more in something that would give me passive income. But right now, my 'financial wisdom' is to increase my income, add sources of income, so I'll be able to continue enjoy the liberation of no budget :p

I just remember that being single also simplify everything financially. I only need to worry about myself. Not much financial posts like children education or something else.

Now, please share your money diary on your blog and twit about it with hashtag #moneydiary :) Let's learn from each other (good and bad) hehe. Here's one of example of more detail money diary of 20-something girl who spend money she doesn't have or 20-something girl who doesn't make enough to cover her shopping habits *uhm… sounds familiar?? :D
