Reflecting on ON | OFF Chat 2011
I honestly believe ON | OFF Chat 2011 is one of the best ideas that come from ON | OFF 2011 team. We used to do pre-event roadshow to 10 cities with the name Blogshop. That's where people are taught how to create a blog.
We think, with 38 million people on Facebook, and more than 5 million blogs in Indonesia, now it's time to go to the next level. We'd like to inspire people, that already having blog and their own social media channels like Facebook and Twitter, to use the powerful tools especially for the good of their community. Let's think beyond a regular update status activity. And after finishing the roadshow, I'm very happy with the result.
There are 2 sessions in each ON | OFF Chat 2011: speaking session & group discussion. In the speaking session, we invite 2 speakers to speak about their experiences in using blog and other social media tools for various needs. Every city choose their own topic, suited with what they thought important for their city. We went to 10 cities: Solo, Lampung, Palembang, Medan, Pontianak, Surabaya, Balikpapan, Bandung, Mataram and Makassar. I'm lucky I can share at 4 cities with different topics: in Medan I talked about Onlinepreneurship, in Pontianak about StartupLokal, in Mataram about Travel and in Makassar I was talking about creativity specifically in writing.
After participants listen to the speakers, they will have to be in group to think about their own campaign ideas and it must be presented in 3 minutes pitch in front of everybody and judges. The practice teach participants to discuss and connect with a total stranger (we choose the group for them), to pitch effectively and of course to do some actions after the event: executing their ideas.
[image error]I was not teaching on step by step solid way what to do on social media, but I give a lot of examples from what I (and other people) did in social media, so hopefully participants could get some inspirations.
In Medan, I met a lot of 'offline' business friends from TDA and it was fun to finally meet all of them. They're a very active and vibrant entrepreneurs community masha Allah. They told me about all of their amazing plans. Good luck for Medan entrepreneurs! I am also pleased to hear that one of our participants in Medan inspired to finally open his own business after attending ON | OFF Chat. Hopefully I can hear such testimonials from more participants.
[image error]In Pontianak, I was kind of surprised that they choose the startup topic. Startups are indeed sexy with over 800 new startups launched in a year in Indonesia, check some of them in #StartupLokal Showcase. Turned out there's a lot of untapped potential in Pontianak. But yes, I hope after the event a lot of startups are currently in progress of developing. At least, the winner of the ideas competition already make action and buying the domain name for their startup. Way to go!
In Mataram, this is where I talk about something that I really really love: traveling. Not much of you know that I'm a travel blogger. I travel with Trinity once. And on some good days, I also get to travel for free
Mataram has a target of 1 million tourists in 2012, and I hope they can easily achieved the target with the new knowledge on social media, new great airport and 2 people from the government attending our seminar
In Makassar, the topic is a little bit broad: creativity. And of course, as a writer of 20++ books, I think I must speak and spread the words about how to get inspirations using social media tools. I was having so much fun, I believe all the participants do too. The winner of campaign idea come up with Losari Berseri and with collaboration of knowledge in the team, they're aiming to make their plans happened.
Surprisingly, at the networking night, a participant approach me and said that they all will try to make all possible ideas in the seminar happened. So, all participants in the seminar will work hand in hand to make every ideas come true! I know the feeling, all the good ideas for your city, and of course you can't let it just passing by without you can do anything about it. So this is how a proud teacher felt like
Makassar Terkini's director, Adhi Santoso, was sitting beside me at Makassar networking night. I said to him, in Jakarta, media will always there at the community events. Because communities consist of passionate young people and all good news coming from them. He nodded, said he will support Makassar communities.
ON | OFF Chat 2011 has teach me a lot. On how to communicate effectively with people, especially when you have a mayor sitting beside you
(In this case, Mayor Jokowi from Solo).
My public speaking skill is one of the areas that is totally improved after the journey.
I got to see a lot of beautiful masjids for my blog PinkMosques.com.
I saw amazing cities in Indonesia with all their delicious food and beautiful scenery. I am also very grateful for the friendship and support from my amazing advisors & team (you know who you are), our wonderful speakers, our sponsors The US Embassy Jakarta, Acer Indonesia and local community partners in each cities we visit. It's been a wonderful journey.
Pak Adhi nicely said to me, "You look good smiling." And smile is all I have now. See you all at ON | OFF 2011!

Cyber Bullying
On Sunday one of my best friends, a well-known author, Mbak Alberthiene Endah (AE) decided that she's deactivating her twitter account @alberthieneE – you can read the well written chronology in @alderina 's blog. I really wanted to express something about this, but 140 characters can't contain it and I find myself wordless. So now, I'm trying to write something about it from my personal point of view and how I see it from the perspective of a close friend.
At midnight after closing her account, Mbak AE called me. She said that she can't take it anymore. She's referring to twitter and all the harsh messages she get. I feel personally conflicted that day. I know that it's her decision that I need to respect. But in the other side, I should've tried to explain better about the twitvironment and its behavior before she's closing her account.
"Maybe twitter is not for me," she said. I know AE for some times and I know that she's very kind and have a tender heart. She didn't meant what she said the way it was on twitter. But the lack of emotion and unable to recognize tone of the voice in twitter text make the message she sent sound extremely cold and straightforward.
I follow everything that happened and I read harsh messages appointed to her that are already going out of context. And we're not talking about just one person. People assumed there's a person who make her quit twitter. Hint: only people that means a lot to your heart, can hurt you.
People argue whether it can be called a bully. For me, when someone feel bullied, then it's a bully. We don't need much definition of it.
Some said it's too much drama. Well, did we really expect people's personality to be exactly the same like us?
Some talking about how it took 3 hours for her to close her account. In great respect to her, she didn't know much about technology but she's willing to try to use it. She need other person (@amrazing) to do the deactivation and it took so long maybe because he was reluctant to do that. Why? Because AE tweets great stuff about life and love. And she helped a lot of people (emotionally) with her tweet.
This is the reason why I write this post. AE tweets are helping hands for every followers (especially young people) who emotionally needs it the most. Those who already been in dark moments in life would understand how positive words, especially created by a great writer like her, would really really help to hold on. Now that she's not there, many of her followers feel a great loss. And I'm one of them.
"The Internet makes bullying more convenient and since the victim's reaction remains unseen people who wouldn't normally bully don't take it as seriously."
Let's remember: there's a real person on the other side of the line. Even though we can only see avatar and username, there's a real man/woman and personality in that tiny piece of bio. Let's agree to disagree. Be nice, as much as we can.

On Regional Workshop – the Dynamics of Women in ICT sector in ASEAN member states
I was invited by Ibu Betty Alisjahbana from Mastel to a regional event held in Jakarta about women and technology – or the right phrase is: Women in ICT, along with other delegations from all over ASEAN countries.
It's of course something that has been on my area of interest. Ibu Mari Elka, Indonesia's Minister of Trade opening the event nicely with statistics she found out at APEC: Women & Economy Summit. From the statistics, she can concluded that women are still under value.
From her speech, she pointed out that women with husband and children sometimes feel guilty when they have to work busier or travel away from their family for works. You might have to choose between your career and your family. But now with technology women can do both and can find balance in their life. They can use video conference without having to physically attend the meeting, so they can stay at home. They can do a lot of activities with the help of technology. Now, it's the policy maker turn to make a friendlier policy and best practice for the flexibility and the use of technology for women.
In terms of mindset, there are a lot of things that need to be change. The first is attitude. People used to warn that women don't have to be too ambitious because they will hard to get a husband. Seriously… the potential of 50% of the population is not growing because of these kind of mindset. The growth of community and country is at risks!
Dealing with women, it's of course need a different method. You need a comprehensive approach, giving them courage to even want to start their own business. Give them successful role models that they can look up to and inspired them to shine.
After that then we can go on to the next step of technical training for the specific use of technology.
Ibu Betty show some results of the survey Mastel conducted in ASEAN countries for 3 categories: entrepreneurs, empoyees and ICT users. But the survey still on going and I believe Mastel will release the results afterwards. Meanwhile you still can participate in the survey via website http://women-in-ict.com
Women can use technology for various purposes:
Search useful information (such as medicine, cooking recipe, etc)
Selling things online
Make online payment
Corresponding with email & chat
Order or buy online
Social media activities
And various activities that can help forming opinions, making decisions and giving support to who needs it
I also catch interesting sharing by Yoori from APWINC Korea and Aurora Rubio from ITU about their experiences in training ICT to urban and rural area women.
The training include: using the computer, problem solving skill, information search skill, social networking
For rural area, the training tools are:
Interactive basic computer and internet literacy training student manual
Guide manual for instructor
Exercise database bank
Interactive customized training tools for women (involved in farming, weaving)
The customized training tools are most interesting because by gathering women with the same livelihood (such as in farming), they can be teach specific knowledge on using technology to support their farming activities.
Pre-consultation research about the people and the area, also replication method to spread the knowledge to the local are among the most important factors to the success of the program.
A story about Tortas in Peru is also a very inspiring case. Tortas is sort of doing online bakery. A group of rural women will accept order from the internet. Aside from selling bread, they also give baking tips on their website. That's the important of follow up training on marketing after they have their website running.
Women can be hard, tough and disciplined yet their compassion will win people's heart. Most urban, even rural area women have known technology but they need to maximized the use of it. We have the same opportunities with men, it's up to us to overcome the barriers and took the advantages.
Let's do it, ladies!

The Signs
I believe in life signs and nothing in this world is a coincidence. Sometimes I believe it too much that my friend @b4nch4 would say, "You're the only person I know that would buy gadgets by seeing signs!" :))
By believing in that, I become a calmer individual. Bad things that happened won't pissed me off that much. Just like yesterday…
I am dead busy. Need to take care of a lot of things. My schedule is full 'til the end of the month. And even though I love what I'm doing, at some point I am tired.
I was surprised that my assistant manage to give me time to go to my acupuncturist yesterday. I felt guilty to go there on my busy schedule. I was about to cancel when my assistant said she just rescheduled me to the afternoon session. I see it as a sign, so I'm on with the plan despite my piling up to-do list.
I had a condition that make me need to meet my acupuncturist regularly. But I haven't had chance to go back for months. She's a famous and busy acupuncturist, as usual, I have to wait in line, try killing time tweeting. But suddenly none of my gadget works for that purpose. 3G is on but it didn't connected. I see it as a sign. I take out Aleph by Paulo Coelho and enjoy reading instead. The book has successfully pull me in and I lost count of time 'til I heard they call my name.
My acupunturist smirked when she recognized me. She's doing the usual cold hard procedure of stabbing me with needles. And before I begin to scream, she's already done. "Did you lost your progress book again?" She said without looking at me, writing down something on her note. Ups. I did. I walked out from her office feeling like I have accomplished something for myself.
I had few hours to kill before my next event and I jump to a small shopping mall in front of the dr office. I skip lunch, starving, and I need some
snacks. Well, I thought I need snack. I stop at the duck restaurant where they served a huge crispy duck. Too big for a snack. But I am meant to properly eat. So I eat, enjoying my food wholeheartedly, because I still can't connect to twitter.
I've been carry-ing a huge heavy bag daily and it started to hurt me. I visit a small spa space where they offer relaxing massage package. I enjoyed my massage for an hour, even asking for additional head + ear massage too, felt totally relaxed and recharged!
When all my self-indulgence finished, it seems that the connection start to work again. Messages from my assistant started flowing in. And I can handle it with better energy.
The day was closed nicely; having a good laugh with friends. The only person had problem was my mom: "You're not tweeting for 6 hours! Are you okay??" She said on the phone.
I chuckled. Now the sign of my existence is my tweet.
"I'm okay, mom. I am more than okay."

Success = Less Sleep?
I was introduced to someone at an event. My friend would introduced me as writer and entrepreneur. And I got this comment about my sleep. "Wow! You must have less sleep!" I thought it was true. But then I make a fun research on how much sleep I have per day. (Not much research, only checking my last tweet hehehe). Turned out I slept on about 6 – 10 hours a day. That is so normal and almost too much :))
So, I guess my sleep has nothing to do with the quantity of works that I'm doing. At night, I never had energy to do anything because I already tired. I can't think much. That's why I'm so amazed with my journalist friend @shirleydaily that still can write amazing piece of article at 4 am in the morning after interviewing us at 2 am :))
I prefer to manage my energy. And I think that's the key. When I'm tired at night, I prefer to read (books, tweets or feeds) and digest new knowledge. In the morning when I wake up, I go straight to writing, making concept, scratching visions, making presentation slides, etc that need full focus & concentration. Later on, I can continue working on my daily operational life such as read and answering 100 emails :))
When I need to go to meetings, between traffic, I always try to have power nap too so I can refresh and at my best condition to follow the meeting.
I find Wunderlist is a perfect to-do list app, so I can easily sync and prioritize on what should be done.
Have a productive day!

Women, Work & The Art of Savoir Faire
Eid Holiday is officially over! Now, we're preparing for the busy routine and I think this book by Mireille Guiliano: Women, Work & The Art of Savoir Faire (you can buy this book from Amazon via Kutukutubuku.com by emailing admin at kutukutubuku.com) is one of the best to read in these times. It's like a guide book especially for women to 'know-how' (savoir faire).
The writing style of the book is personal, light and page-turning. The author has succesfully written the best-selling book "French Women Don't Get Fat" before, so we can expect the same quality in this book.
Mireille tells story about her experience as a CEO in a company. She's opening her book by reminding us that life is lived in episodes and stages. I take it as we have to be flexible on what opportunities life can bring us. Yes we plan things, but if it's not turned out the way we want, just twist your plan a little bit and shine.
Presentations. When doing this, make sure your slides are simple. Your presentation slides should support you to deliver your points. Not overwhelming you instead. Check with your boss/mentor about the content and always rehearse out loud before doing it. That's all important keys to your presentation success.
The style. You must decide how you represent yourself. She's quoting, "If a woman is not well dressed, one notice her for the outfit, but if she's impeccably dressed, it's she that one notices." If you always find it hard to think nice outfit for the day, spend the night before to think and decide which clothes you wanna wear tomorrow. It works to effectively use your morning time. You can find inspiration from websites or magazine, but it's not neccessarily means new clothes. You can always mix & match.
To reduce stress, whenever something big happened related to opportunities, risk and decisions, breath then ask yourself: What's the worst thing that can happen? That way you can be more relax.
Mireille also describing how good leaders should be. One of the most interesting part from this, she said a leader should have a remarkable self confidence. Don't complicate things. A leader also have to grow thick skin. Thick-skinned leaders can always listen to criticism and learn from it when appropriate, but also understand that there will seemingly always be 20% of just plain noise, so don't take it too personally or let it divert you from the more important foci. Don't invest psychic or physical energy on things you can't control; focus on the positive.
Last but not least, Mireille also suggest us to have our scheduled 'beach time' to find balance. Also start the day with healthy routine, I think us Muslims already done it with Fajr/Subuh Prayer
What I've learned from this book, French people always try to enjoy the process of every moment. They don't rush it. They find magic in their activities. And that makes their 'Joie de Vivre' attitude more vibrant.
Have a fabulous day!

Dance Performance " Andai… | If… "
Yudistira Syuman
Sound Design : Aksan Sjuman , Danny Ardiono
Lighting : Deray Setiadi
Artistic Director & Sutradara Rekaman : Teguh Ostenrik
Pengisi Suara : Gregorius Priyo Satongko. Edward Sirait, Titi Sjuman
Musik/ Lagu: "vexation" – Eric Satie
It's about the life experience of the choreographer when he suffered from schizophrenia: what has happened when he suffered by hallucinations. This dance works illustrates that people with schizophrenia are not helpless creatures, and how wrong the stigma from other people is, who thinks the disease is a curse. In fact, schizophrenia, which could be suffered by anyone without exception, is a desease that can be cured.
Yudhisthira Syuman completed the dance school at Sumber Cipta Ballet in 1985, then went to continue studying classical ballet, modern dance, European folk dance and flamenco in Folkwang Hochshule in Essen, Germany. After graduation he joined the Folkwang Tanz Studio Company. Now he teaches at Sumber Cipta Ballet, as well as choreographer for Kreativität Dance Indonesia.

Entrepreneur Story
So what is your definition of success?
It's really hard to measure.
A lot of journalists would ask me about how much my companies make. And of course I'm not comfortable in answering that. But they need numbers to sell in their media. Apparently people still need that to be motivated. So they'd keep pushing me to answer in each and every way. 'Til at one point I'd answer that now I personally make minimum 20x higher than my last salary and they will all will stop right there and nodding :))
But I never felt I'm successful. I always say, I'm on my way there. It needs courage to actually declare self successful. That's why I need time to think before writing my business book 'Easy Biz' because I don't think my experience is enough already to share. But now that I got positive feedback on how people motivated to start their own business after reading the book, it makes me confident that no matter where you are in your business stage, you can always inspire others in positive ways. Now, I realize that my definition of success is when I be able to share more with others.
Congratulations to 12 amazing business owners that have the courage to write their inspiring stories. They show us passion, consistency, and values in building their business. And all that really inspire me (and hopefully many others).
Thank you Es Teler 77 @77EsTeler and Mbak Felicia Nugroho @flishn for supporting the Entrepreneur Story book, self published at NulisBuku.com @NulisBuku .
Quoting Sary, the winner of the writing challenge: "Success is when we start to do something we love."
Hope you can define your own success!

The Dancing Leader
2 people in the photo above are working for me. In my company, they usually do admin tasks, routine stuff every single day. But I understand that they also have their own passions. One love singing & music – want to become a star, and the other has passion in movie making. So, yesterday I asked them to join me in a short movie project, where they can actively take part as talents (actor & actress) and becoming director's 'advisor' joining the team. We had a lot of fun together, bonding as friends, but still would understand each other's roles & responsibilities while in the work place. I believe this is what @bukik means by… The Dancing Leader.

ON | OFF Chat 2011: Solo – Using Social Media for Education
Solo is our first city for ON | OFF Chat 2011 supported by @akbersolo & @usembassyjkt . ON | OFF Chat is a pre-event part of ON | OFF 2011 that will go to 10 cities all around Indonesia to do workshops & promote the use of social media to empower positive activities.
We would talk about different topics in each cities. In Solo, the topic was about education, how with online tools we can make offline impact. With inspirations from the speakers, Mas Agus Sampurno @gurukreatif that has been using his blog to promote creative teaching, and Mbak Ainun Chomsun @pasarsapi founder of Akademi Berbagi, a movement started on twitter to provide free useful classes for everyone, we really hope there are new movements that can start its spark in Solo.
After the seminar, the participants form 10 groups with 5 people each, to discuss their own movement. They need to identify the problems they face (in education), how to solve the problem with social media and name of the project they want to make. They have 45 minutes, but some groups spent 30 minutes only to identify problems, there are too many problems they said. But I suggest them to pick priority of problem that can be solve faster and its impact must be bigger than others.
They do 5 minutes pitch of the project on stage, with me (as the ChairWoman of ON | OFF 2011), Mbak Ai & Mas Agus as the advisor. They've been putting their best effort in creating the project, I'm so happy! They could identify problems like educational material that should be in-sync with the local situation, the cross-community platform to be able to access knowledge from each community, education access to remote area, etc.
But what we like the most is the idea about SMK business project, where they want to give opportunities for brilliant-ready-to-work SMK students, it could be a form of finding investors and teach them how to make a good business plan, finding companies to recruit them if they want to work for a company, access to market, etc. They will use social media as tool to promote the movement. The winner get coaching session with me, Mbak Ainun & Mas Agus for a month to launch their movement. And of course I hope all 9 ideas would also be executed!
At night, we have a cross-community gathering, online and offline communities collide in a room. There are train, bus, bike, reptile lover community (they bring snakes!) and many more. We have a little talkshow with me, mas Sunanto & mas Imam from @akbersolo . Then we have the communities introduced themselves. We had a lot of laugh, understanding of what other communities are doing and ideas to collaborate in each and every way. Really a great online offline – ON | OFF – moment
And the special mystery guest of the night was finally coming: Mr. Jokowi, the Mayor of Solo. I sat beside him (yes, he sat on the floor with us!) and tell him what's ON | OFF Chat 2011 is all about. He's been nodding and said while staring at the community on the stage, "They should keep doing the creative thing, about budget and all that stuff, it's my job to provide!"
He then announce that he's providing a creative space for community where they can hang out and use the facility. Also if there's a potential, he will recruit the community in his own version of incubation. Oh wow. Talk about direct support from government! He's so amazing. And have changed Solo into a bettery city.
In Solo, everything has its own philosophy. And that makes me fall in love with the city. There's something that make me compare the city with Ubud. The culture, the serenity, the wisdom.
Thank you Solo and our new friends from @AkberSolo : @imamsubchan @azisbachtiar @BudiPrajitno @SadrahDeep for your hospitality. We got a lot of inspirations and having a fantastic time there. We will missed the late night wedangan
Hope to see you in Jakarta for ON | OFF 2011!
