PLAYING PATIENCE~ Blog Tour~ April 15th-April 30th

Playing Patience By: Tabatha Vargo

BLURB:
Sometimes all you need is Patience.
Life’s been hard for Zeke. Being a punching bag for his alcoholic father has turned him into stone. Not even the dodgy trailer park he lives in can scare him. Fighting is his release and sex, drugs, and his guitar bring him peace, but deep down Zeke isn’t quite as hard as he makes himself out to be. When he meets Patience, she finds all his broken pieces and puts him back together, but she’s a ray of light in his shadowed life and the last thing he wants to do is bring her into his dark world. Playing careless is easy, playing the bad guy can be fun, but playing Patience is impossible, especially when she can see right through him.
Zeke isn’t the only one who’s broken, and for the first time, in a long time, Patience feels alive. Her black and white world gets a shot of color when she meets Zeke. He’s unlike anyone she’s ever met with his tattoos, piercings, and blunt honesty. She wants nothing more than to let go and ride the wild side with him, but some wounds never heal and the broken pieces of Patience aren’t so easy to find.
***Warning: this book contains graphic language, sex, and violence. Mature readers only. Not intended for young adult readers.***
EXCERPT: Her cheeks turned pink and a frown pulled on her pouty mouth. “I shouldn’t have come here. I just wanted to say thanks.” Her eyes cut me before she turned and walked away. She made it to the hood of the waiting car, before my conscious peeked out and slapped the shit out of me. “Hey,” I called out to her. She stopped and faced me again. Instantly, I felt like the biggest dick in the south when I saw her eyes brimming with tears. Someone so sensitive didn’t stand a chance around a person like me, but knowing that I’d probably never see her face again made it okay for me to kind of apologize for being myself for some reason.“I’m rude, but you’ve seen firsthand what happens to shiny things in a chop shop,” I gestured to the world around us. “Your best bet is to stay away from these parts, princess. A pretty thing like you wouldn’t last two hours out here. How long were you at The Pit last night before you were dying on the bathroom floor? An hour, tops? Think of my rudeness as a blessing.” I adjusted my guitar case in my sweaty palm and turned toward my trailer door. I looked back to get one final glimpse of her. The contrast between her and the trailer park around her was alarming, although, with her fair skin, white hair, and pale, blue eyes, I’m sure she stuck out just about anywhere she went. She was unique, a single snowflake with her own icy patterns, and if she stayed in my hell any longer she’d melt. “Have a nice trip back to Wonderland, Snowflake,” I said, as I opened my the door,“My name is Patience,” she snapped.Patience…it was as unique as its owner. I liked it, although, I’d never admit that out loud. Instead, I shook my head and laughed like she had told me a joke, walked inside, and shut her out.

Interview:
Q) As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up? A) I wanted to design clothing. I even named my line Drigail Jeans. I still have a ton of my drawings. It’s funny to look back at them.
Q) If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in any of your books?A) Not really. The two books I’ve published so far have been a work in progress for many years. As far as storyline goes, they are exactly what I want them to be.
Q) Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?A) I remember I wrote a poem in elementary school that got published in our little school paper. I was hooked ever since. When I was a teenager I had a rough time and I would go in my room and write until I felt better. It’s always been my release.
Q) What was the hardest part of writing your books?A) Writing the blurb is the hardest part for me. To take something that is over eighty thousand words and sum it up in two paragraphs is insanely hard. Everything else is usually pretty easy, thankfully.
Q) Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?A) Thank you! It’s all I want to say. When I get responses about my work it really does alter me, especially when it comes to On the Plus Side. That story was such a personal one, so when females message me and tell me thank you for writing it, I feel very good about the bad things I went through when I was younger. It does something to me. I’ve cried over so many of the beautiful messages and reviews. So, yeah...THANK YOU!
Q) What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, and logistical) in bringing your characters to life?A) With the books I’ve put out so far, it was mostly light research. My characters somehow become real to me and I know everything about them. Bringing them to life has always been my speciality. However, I have a book sitting in my computer that is killing me. It’s involving so much research. It keeps getting stuck on the back burner so that I can knock out the ones that take me a few weeks to write. It will be epic once I’m finished with it, though.
Q) What are you working on now?A) Right now I’m working on finishing up Wicked Hope. It’s the second book in The Wicked Trilogy. I’m actually going to write books two and three at the same time and make my life easier.
Q) Who is your favourite hero/heroine/character from your own books? What about of all time?A) I love all of my characters, but if I had to choose one girl it would be Lilly from On the Plus Side and Zeke Mitchell from Playing Patience. Those two gave me a good laugh and took a lot out of me. They were the easiest and yet, emotionally, the hardest to write. I adore them.
Q) If you could have take one of your book boyfriends out on a date in the real world, who would it be & where would you go?A) Oh geez. I could never choose just one! I love them all equally, but I suppose I’d take Zeke. He’s the party boy and I think he’d keep me laughing. We’d probably just hang out in his friend Finn’s garage and listen to tunes. J

Excerpt:Killer CrushCharleeAs per all the fourteen- to eighteen-year-olds at our school, I started crushing on Dexter Hollingworth around the age of fifteen. There was one girl who hated him, but she was into girls. From the football field sidelines to graduation day and beyond, my best friend Rosa and I have wanted him. But guys like Dexter don’t notice girls like us who spend most of our time talking about cool people like him. At twenty years old, I still “love” him. I love the way his body personifies what a male God should be without looking like Fabio. I love the way his perfect tanned skin is inked and how he wears those aviator sunglasses and how he’d use up his lunchtimes to teach the little kids in our school guitar lessons. But I hate the way I love him.I hate how Dexter was the one controlling the ski lifts at Mason’s Ski Resort the day my mom was killed because it also put me here, in this position, praying to a God I’ve never believed in to spare my dad’s life.In this hospital room, the air is as quiet as the still of night and my dad’s languid breathing and drawn-out, heavy movements remind me that my perfect family life was never meant to be forever. If I’m being honest, it seems like things are already over. Dad’s skin keeps a yellow color—at best—from the IV drip. His meds help with the simple tasks his heart and other organs can’t. My thoughts wander again. I don’t let myself consider the alternative—that maybe it’s wishful thinking. I go with this:“Dad,” I say, jealous my little brother, Darcy is holding our dad’s hand—the hand he can squeeze with. “Look at you.” I wink.“Is she okay, Dad?” Darcy asks, sounding as though he’s confused.“Charlee?” The confusion is contagious, but Dad’s patient zero—not Darcy. There are bars that raise and lower around Dad’s bed, and they’ve been raised forever. Surely they must be there because they’re too hard to put down in their scratched, old state. My dad doesn’t need silly bars around his bed! My dad owns Roycroft Engines.“I think you’re squeezing Darcy’s hand too tight,” I say.“Wha-at?” Darcy says. He’s staring at me with squinted eyes, probably thinking what’s wrong with my sister? She’s supposed to be the adult. It hurts smiling like this, the creases halfway up my cheeks. But maybe it’ll work. “Isn’t that right, Dad?”Dad’s eyes are like I remember them now. There’s vibrancy in the rich brown color, like my eyes. I bet he’s thinking is his daughter crazy? He tilts his head to the side—Injured people don’t understand things like this. Injured people don’t get what’s unsaid. Dad’s not that injured.—as it clicks. Dad shakes out of Darcy’s grip and waggles his finger at him. “That nurse…”“Lisa Hollingworth,” I say.“Yes, Lisa. That nurse Lisa said motor function is good. Squeezing someone’s hand uses up a lot more strength than you think, son.”Darcy’s mouth flops open and stays that way. He checks out Dad, who’s nodding, and me—should I nod?—so I nod also.“Squeezing your hand probably takes Dad twenty muscles and millions of brain cells just to do something like that.”“No way!” Darcy grins and punches the air. “Dad, that’s cool.”And just like that, Darcy has that same face on as he had when Mom told him she had to wait three hours in line to buy Desert Warcraft and yeah, she really, really got it for him. That face is why I haven’t downed twenty sleeping pills yet. God knows these last weeks have felt like months, which actually felt like years. That makes me the most ancient twenty-year-old alive. Why, Dexter? Why did it have to be you in that seat, in that room, at that time?

Goodreads
Excerpt:"I'm not flirting, Mr. Chapman, I'm trying to work on an assignment." I put the pen down on the table and then pushed it off. "Whoopsies," I said with a small grin.I slowly got up, circling to the other side of the chair. Then I dipped down low, with my butt raised in the air and picked up the pen, slowly inching back up and throwing my hair back. I shot a grin in Trey's direction. He was squirming in his seat. Some politician-in-training he was.Our relationship had slowly been progressing, and when I was with him it became easier to push out the past. As long as we stayed away from his fraternity and the Kappa girls. Instead of seeing them we’d spend nights on the couch watching movies or kissing. He never pushed me to go any farther, but the more time I spent with Trey the more I fell for him."I guess I need to keep my hands steady," I said in a low voice. "Maybe I should just check some reference books out over there behind that big book case." I pointed over to the stack of reference books behind us and nodded in their direction.Slowly, I walked over, swaying my body ever so slightly and hoped he would get the hint and follow. Once I was at the other side of the bookshelf, I pressed my back along the books and waited. It was only a few seconds before I heard Trey's slow, methodical steps approaching the shelf. I pulled the collar of his shirt as soon as I saw his feet, dragging him behind the shelf until he was flush against me."Do you suppose we could just absorb these reference books by osmosis, Miss Remy?" he said, putting his hands on either side of my waist."I just needed a little study break," I whispered, running a finger down the buttons of his shirt."But, Miss Remy, we have barely started," he said, teasing me and letting his lips hover just above mine."Mr. Chapman, I'm just trying to make the study process go a little smoother. This book case that keeps us hidden from the rest of the library should help," I said with a coy smile and unbuttoned the top button of his shirt."Miss Remy, I wouldn't want to start anything to affect your studies." He ran his hand along the low collar of my shirt so delicately slow it made my whole body tremble. "Especially when you’re wearing such a nice outfit."I couldn't take the teasing anymore. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pressed against him, kissing him hard. He moved his hands to my lower back, running his fingers up and down my spine. Slowly, I moved my hands from his neck and down to his shirt, unbuttoning each button. I wasn't planning on having sex in the library, or sex at all for that matter, but I didn't want the button marks that I usually had all over me from his shirts.Once I got the last button undone I pulled him back to me. The material of his undershirt was so thin I could feel every ripple of his abs on my stomach. He really was a fine specimen of a man. His lips trailed down my neck and to my collarbone. I moaned softly when he nibbled at the sensitive skin above my chest. He pulled his lips back up to my ear and whispered, "This is a library, Miss Remy."I bit my lip. "Sorry, Mr. Chapman, it won't happen again."He nipped at my ear lobe and then licked the same spot. "But I love it when it does."I gasped and then buried my face in his, trying to keep quiet but it was hard when my entire body was aching for him. It had been too long since I'd been with anyone. I hadn't wanted to, but with Trey, it was all I wanted. He was all I wanted. I hadn’t had any flashbacks since the party and I thought I would possibly be ready to move on with my life."Trey Chapman, you make me crazy," I whispered."And you love it," he said placing a quick kiss where my neck met my shoulder and I squirmed, trying not to squeal."And I know how to make you crazy." I pulled his lips to mine, acting like I was going to kiss him and then nibbled at his bottom lip, slowly and tenderly. His eyes rolled back into his head, and I could feel him harden beneath his pants. Two could play at the teasing game. I let go of his lip, placing a soft kiss where my teeth had been."You’re too good at that," he whispered, running his hands down my ribcage and landing at the bare skin where my shirt rode up slightly.

The Genre Dilemma:
I have no idea what types of books I write, so I file them under genres like “Mature YA” and “New Adult.” I don’t even really understand these genres (and I suspect no one else does either), but they sound good. And I know they have something to do with older teens and people in their twenties. And they usually include some bad language and risqué situations/themes. So I guess my stories sort of fit, like shoving a size 8 foot into a size 6 shoe.
The problem? I write about ultra mature/ultra taboo topics. And so far they’ve involved teenagers. So you have the “f” word. And you have teens. And you have something really taboo like rape. “F” word + teens + rape = NO GENRE. And I will not classify them as Adult fiction. I refuse because I truly believe they are not (but adults are more than welcome to read them, of course).
New Adult is by far the closest, but even that genre requires . . . oh, I don’t even know what you call it. Mild restraint? Or maybe it doesn’t. I don’t know. What I do know is that I’ve yet to come across a book about teenagers that just puts it all out there. Raw. In your face. Makes you completely uncomfortable. Maybe outraged. “This is a book for teens?! How dare she! She is an irresponsible woman! She’s sending the wrong message!” (Man, I’ll know I’ve made it when I get a review like that.)
And it’s not like I’m trying to push the envelope. I just write about real things, and I say it in a real way. So it’s probably going to make you shift around in your seat until you find a comfortable position. Or maybe you’ll never find a comfortable position, and then you can write a review like the one mentioned above. I won’t be offended. I swear.
I’m not going to lie and say it’s not frustrating being a genre-confused writer. I feel lost. I’m that sad kid on the playground wandering around by myself with my face turned up to the sky. “Where are my friends? My genres? Who am I?” It’s all very existential crisis when I haven’t the time for it. I need to be writing. And once I’m finished writing, I need to have a genre to put it in.
So right now you’ll see “New Adult.” When enough people yell at me and say my content is too mature for “New Adult,” then I guess you’ll see “Adult.” Or maybe I’ll stick with New Adult just to be spiteful. Or maybe I’ll create a new genre.
How about the “You Know . . .Whatever” genre?

Author Interview
Q) What books have most influenced your life most?A) The Twins and St. Clares and the Mallory Towers series' by Enid Blyton. They were the first series' I ever read, and I've read them a thousand times or more.
Q) If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in any of your books?A) Of course. I'll always find something to change.
Q) Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?A) It just did, probably from a strong love of books in general.
Q) What was the hardest part of writing your books?A) The endings. I never know how to end a book.Q) As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up? A) I wanted to be a ballerina. I'm just too clumsy for that
Q) What inspired you to write your first book?A) I needed a vice for a tough time in 2012, and writing became that. The idea just formed. I'm not sure anything really inspired that book.
Q) Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?A) I get my ideas from everywhere. Music, dreams, or just randomly. My information I get from Google or friends.
Q) What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating any of your books?A) That writing isn't as easy as people think.
Q) What would you say is your interesting writing quirk? A) I don't really think I have one... Although I do tend to view the scenes like a movie in my mind, and I do sometimes mutter what I'm writing. Is that a quirk?
Q) Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?A) That I wouldn't be writing without them, so thank you!!
Q) What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, and logistical) in bringing your characters to life?A) The biggest challenge was their speech. I'm British, so after sending the book to my (American) betas, there were a lot of things that needed changing or that we were on the fence about. I'd also catch myself saying British things while writing, which would interrupt the flow a little.
Q) What are you working on now?A) Always Remember, the companion novel to my first New Adult book, Never Forget, and Playing for Keeps, the companion novel to The Love Game. Also a secret project, that may or may not be announced by the time this interview is posted!
Q) Who is your favourite hero/heroine/character from your own books? What about of all time?A) It's a tossup between Jen from Never Forget, and Maddie from The Love Game. I love Jen's hard attitude and sarcasm, but I admire Maddie's strength and drive to go on. Of all time, it has to be Jo from Little Women. She was never afraid to be herself.
What’s the first word that comes to mind when you read the following words:
· Angel: Maddie. (Read the book and you'll know why.)· Romance: Not my partner, that's for sure! ;)· Love: My family.· Vampire: Twilight. · Swoon: Taylor Lautner. * sighs *· Reading: I wish!· Chocolate: Please.· Coffee: No thank you.· Dress: What? Pass my onesie!
Thanks so much for being a good sport and doing the interview! (I too enjoy a good onsie LOL). You were awesome and I can’t wait to read your book! xo~Piper
