Boomer

I created this character in 1988 & I probably haven't drawn him since the early 90's. Found old picture in box today and decided it was time to draw a new picture of him, like updating a family portrait. He's like an old friend. Drawing the shapes feels like jumping in a pool and remembering how wonderful the water feels around your body.

Urban Sketching

I started watching another class on Craftsy. This one is Sketchboks: Drawing the Everyday with Paul Heaston. After watching him draw some pretty amazing street scenes I thought I'd give it a try and all I can say is that urban sketchers deserve much more credit. I don't think I have the patience for it.

Auden Writing Schedule

Drawing these writing schedules is great way to kick my self in the ass. Everyone of them makes me feel lazy. I draw one at the beginning of the week and tasks it to my desk for the week, forcing me to state at it anytime I lift my head from working.

Most of the info for these come out of Mason Currey's Daily Rituals.

Baby Blues

Today's Baby Blues cracked me up. I just had to draw a small piece of it.

On Set Sketches

The last two days I've been helping to film a music video. 14 hours a day doesn't leave a lot of free time, but I tried to remember all of the this I've been pitching for the last year. If something is important to you then you will find time for it.

My daily sketches are important to me so I took a little pocket sketchbook with me yesterday and found a few slivers of time to do some quick pen sketches.

The first is of a piece of furniture on the set. This kind of starting is very difficult for...

Stanley Kubrick, Director: A Visual Analysis

by Alexander Walker, Ulrich Ruchti &Sybil Taylor

Notes & Quotes
The curiosity that served him in place of a need for community was the most driving part of his nature today.

In reference to 2001: A Space Odyssey:

“Here you are, sir” are the first words we hear, spoken by a receptionist on the Wheel to Dr. Floyd; the film started more than thirty minutes before. It is no accident that the routine formula recalls stock phases of welcome and farewell in use by airline personnel on earth today. The r...

More Charcoal

Tried out a wordless charcoal pencil today. It was definitely easier to keep clean and the pencil point makes it easier to control as well. I started with a medium but I wasn't happy with the quality of the black. The charcoal was rough and scratchy on the paper, which I hate.

I pulled out the soft charcoal and liked that better. I went over ever thing else. I also tried out one of the blending doobies. I've never been good at blending. Definitely something I need to practice.

Charcoal Audrey Mutant

I recently discovered Craftsy and saw a free class Draw Better Portraits by Gary Faigin. I've never worked with charcoal before and Faigin made it look so easy that I thought I'd give it a shot. (I happened to have some lasting around from a birthday present)

Though the results are not photographic perfection, I'm happy with them. I like to think of it as Audrey Hepburn filtered through Tim Burton's head.

Vonnegut's Writing Schedule

It's important to realize that talent plays such a small role when compared to dedication and effort. I'll likely be doing a series of these creative schedules as reminders to myself to keep pushing.
