Fuck, Yes!

by Wing Fu Fing

NotesInstantly I wonder if his son’s name (Quentin) is a reference to Quentin Compson in The Sound & The Fury, then he says that his daughter’s name is Dulcinea. There are definitely literary allusions going on here. The way that Brunoexplains how people could use arestaurant to run drugs reminds me of Gus on Breaking Bad.QUOTES

Don Quixote

I've mentioned a few times in my news letter about going back through my memories and discovering the little things that consumed my young imagination. Many of these things are things which I had forgetten and rediscovered only by indulging myself. One such thing is MAD's Madden Artist Don Martin Bounces Back. It was one of the books on the shelf at my dad's house when I would visit. I problem read it a hundred and seven times.

I've also been desperately trying to read Don Quixote for years an...

Corrupt Data

The hardest part about sketch with pen is realizing that you've screwed up and finishing the drawing anyhow. The answers are in the errors.

Been rewatching one of my favorite shows from my teenage years, Star Trek: The Next Generation. So here's an attempt to draw Data. It was looking like him until I lost control of the shading on the left side. Now it kinda resembles Gary Shandling.

Ah hell, I had to do one more. This time a quickie with the brush pen.

Pirate

Got some cool dark grey ink. While testing it out starting making this pirate doodle. Something about it is very Simpsons. While coloring it in I realized that I'm starting to like using colored pencils. (I used to hate them.)

Bubo

I loved watching Clash of the Titans when I was a kid. Ray Harryhausen's claymation monsters completely captured my imagination. They were realistic and it did matter cause they were just fucking cool. I don't think computer graphics will ever have the soul that practical effects did. The robotic owl Bubo was a ridiculous and amazing at the same time. He was like the C3-PO of birds.

Eichmann in Jerusalem

(A Report on the Banality of Evil)

by Hannah Arendt

Dimly aware of a defect that must have plagued him even in school—it amounted to a mild case of aphasia—he apologized, saying, “Officialese [Amtssprache] is my only language.” But the point here is that officialese became his language because he was genuinely incapable of uttering a single sentence that was not a cliché. (Was it these clichés that the psychiatrists thought so “normal” and “desirable”? Are these the “positive ideas” a clergyman...

Where Have All the Flex Pens Gone?

My everyday pen is a Noodler's Ahab. Yup that's a fountain pen, but it's $20 fountain pen. I heard that fountain pens were that best for drawing so I found a cheap one to give it a shot. But cheap want my main qualification. I did my research. What I wanted was a flex pen.

For those who don't know what a flex pen is, it's a fountain pen with a nibs soft enough and shaped right to give line variation based upon pressure. You know all those cool handwritings that have awesome loops, swoops an th...

Sketching the Mundane

When the idea of what to draw alludes me I'm teaching myself to just keep drawing the rings around me, even if they are the most boring of objects. What I'm learning is that these mundane objects are sometimes the hardest to draw.

In Evil Hour

by Garbriel García Márquez

NOTES & QUOTESI had an excruciatingtooth infection a few years ago and because of it, I'm highlysympathetic to the destructivethrobbing in the mayor’s molar & his method of rubbing things on it, looking for relief. The mention of a movie to be played in the town cinema as being"approved for all" & the image of a priest ringing a bell for inappropriate material within the film reminds me of a scene in Cinema Paradiso. Was this a commonpractice in catholic countries?I l...

Waiting Room

I has to take my buddy Jimi to the emergency vet tonight. I love that dog. I call him my nephew. I hope that whatever is wrong is something minor.

Because of his situation, I spent a lot of time in the waiting room; a lot of time in a bland room. Sketching is a good way of wasting time but it's also a good way to distract your mind when you are worried; a good way to control something small when everything else feels out of your control.

I had Proust to fall back on, him in my head as a reminde...
