Whenever anyone asks for a piece of publishing advice, I say: perseverance is the only difference between a published author and an unpublished author.

I’m reminded of that as I embark on drafting my current secret project. Perseverance comes into play in a lot of this job. Pushing through difficult drafts/edits; pushing through waiting and hoping. The ability to self motivate is hugely beneficial—as is the ability to give yourself a break, and be kind to yourself. You can be both your own cheerleader and your own friend.

What’s a phrase that’s become one of your own personal battle cries?

I first heard this quote in the movie adaptation of Eragon, and it didn’t occur to me until recently to find out who actually said it.

The truth is way cooler—Grace Hopper was a naval admiral and one of the first computer programmers. Knowing her life story makes me shout this even more aggressively at people when they aren’t sure if they should do something or not.
