Nice try, Spring, bring all pretty to lure me into a false sense of security. I know the truth.

It’s been far too long since I screamed about @c.s.pacat’s CAPTIVE PRINCE trilogy. They’re gonna throw me out of the fan club, really.
One of the many, many things I adore about these books is the prose. I’ve lost count of how many lines made me stop and wheeze-gasp in awe, especially in the second book, PRINCE’S GAMBIT. The word choice is stunning. Like this one — “austere.” God, thats such a good word! You instantly know all you need to about this wildly complex character in ONE WORD. Pacat’s writing is a master class in being concise yet impactful, poetic yet sparse.
What books leave you drooling over the prose?

Must document every time I do my hair and wear real clothes as they are rare and precious moments.
Spring is finally upon us in my neck of the world, and I have been organizing, cleaning, and otherwise reevaluating my current state all week. Despite Spring’s inherent evilness, season changes are always great opportunities for fresh starts, particularly in keeping with no doubt long forgotten New Year’s resolutions. My goal for this year was to find more balance, in my personal life, in work, in health, in joy — slowly but surely, I feel like I’m getting there. Five days forward, three days back.
What is one goal you still have for this year? What are you doing to inch closer to achieving it?

I am a writing craft junkie. I have shelves of books, files of online resources. Since writing has become my career, I’ve thrown myself into honing my abilities, and I definitely feel like I have more of a grasp of writing elements than I did pre-SNOW LIKE ASHES.
But sometimes I miss the blissful ignorance of writing without analyzing the elements. Of piecing together a story just because it’s FUN, not also because the plot needs a beat there and the character arc needs more tension there. It’s a fine balance to be educated about writing craft nuances yet still retain your bliss.
How do you keep the magic alive while writing? What craft books do you swear by?

“Always take credit for good writing you did not intend because you’ll be getting plenty of criticism for bad writing you did not mean either.” Roy Peter Clark, WRITING TOOLS.
What’s something that surprised you in your own book? A twist you didn’t see coming, a character reaction you thought would go differently, even a line you didn’t expect to be impactful?
One of the most satisfying parts of writing is having elements of a book come together in ways I didn’t anticipate. In THESE REBEL WAVES, I never planned to have Vex’s POV (it was only supposed to be Lu and Ben), but the moment I wrote his first section, he surged right on ahead like he was always meant to be a POV character. Vex took on a life of his own in the best way, and it made writing his chapters some of my favorite bits of TRW.
