3 years in remission!
3 years ago today I was told that I was cancer free. It was (and still is) one of the greatest feelings in the world. I set out to fulfill my dreams after that, and I don’t take any opportunity for granted. Thank you to all of those who were there for me.
I urge you to get your cancer screenings done, even if it doesn’t run in your family. There are too many people who have been lost.

Pretty When She Dies (Pretty When She Dies, #1) by Rhiannon Frater

Click here for the buy link
Amaliya is your typical college student with family issues. After a coffee date with a professor turns into her digging herself out of her own grave, Amaliya’s life is drastically changed. It turns out that her professor is a sadistic vampire with a tendency to turn people and leave them to figure everything else out on their own. With no family to count on, Amaliya must embark on a journey to find someone like her who can help her understand her new life.
Honestly, I’ve heard nothing but good things about Rhiannon Frater. My friends have all highly recommended her. When I saw Pretty When She Dies free on the Kindle Market, I jumped on it. I’m always looking for an interesting new take on vampires. Maybe I set the bar too high, but this book was a total let down.
Amaliya is one of those now all too familiar heroines who is drop dead gorgeous, and every man wants her, but she doesn’t see it herself. She is a self proclaimed rocker chick with a goth tendency who likes to wear slutty clothes, then get offended when nasty old men hit on her. She was a cliche all over. She, along with the other female characters in this book were all bitchy, dimwitted bimbos. The male characters were all either disgusting pigs or douche bags that were also incredibly attractive. The fact that vampires can cry blood in this universe was just beyond dumb to me. I mean, I appreciated that she had to hunt for blood, sleep during the day, and didn’t have a reflection, but cry blood? No, thank you.
I was really surprised at the poor quality of the editing in this book, as well. There were a ton of errors that any read through by an editor would have caught. I tried to keep reading, but it honestly felt like a chore. I don’t like leaving novels incomplete, but this is one I will not be finishing. I may read other work by Rhiannon Frater, but I will not pick this book up again, nor will I read the rest of the series.

Writing Practice – why it’s time to stop thinking of writing as a profession
(Writing Tips Tuesday) This fantastic article is by Damien Walter talks about looking at writing as more of a practice than a profession. We put so much pressure on ourselves to be counted as “professionals” that we often lose sight of our passion. Just take a look at this and I think it will give you a different out look!
Originally posted on Damien G. Walter:
If you go to a good art school (and yes you STEM readers out there, such places do exist) they teach you to think of your art as a practice. And yourself as a practitioner. There’s a purpose to this tradition, although admittedly it takes most art students – myself included – until well after they graduate and are in to their practice to understand why.
Before I say more about practice, I should say why I think this idea is useful at this time for writers. Today the writing world is in a certain amount of turmoil. Digital technology means that the limitations imposed by print have evaporated overnight. And although the change could be seen coming long ago, many writers and publishers are struggling psychologically to adapt. Questions like whether it is still possible to earn a living as a writer, whether self-publishing is a viable route for…
