Blood Binds Returns

It’s about time to welcome back the adventures of the wolf, the witch and the wayfarer. The next chapter is slated to be posted tomorrow. Instead of weekly, as originally indicated, chapters will be posted bi-weekly.

Mum’s been the word on this subject for several months, mainly because I wasn’t sure if certain health issues would rear their ugly heads to throw me off rhythm again.

Considering the progress made over the last several weeks, I’m starting to feel fairly confident about re-adopting...

Mermaid

Say, the only dream you ever had was blue, a fierce brilliance that engulfs everything in the universe. All you know of your place in the monochromatic everything is webbed feet, jewel fingers and a certain, unnamable longing.

At night, there in the dark, you reach upward and you strain to grasp the hazy glow of some distant light in your palms.

You drift faster and farther from the deep, full dark. It’s warm near the surface but you don’t know what warmth is. There had never been anyone to tea...

Invisible Universe – a History of Black Speculative Fiction

Yesterday, a most impressiveIndiegogo campaign was brought to my attention. Invisible Universe is an ambitious documentary project that seeks to shed some light on the rich and wondrous universe of black speculative fiction.

“BLACK SF /// BLACK SCI-FI /// BLACK SPECULATIVE FICTION /// AFROFUTURISM

All these terms have become synonymous with a type of fantastic truthtelling that explodes from the Black imagination. Whether in books, movies or comics, Black Speculative Fiction (typically, a congl...

The World be Damned…

Today, I listened to this song for the first time.

I listened, really listened and I was seriously astonished at how much it resonated with my own inner struggles.

“I’m not alone,” I thought.

It’s not so preposterous after all, to choose to live. To choose hope over despair. To go to sleep each night, actually wanting to wake up the next morning. It’s such a weird feeling.

This is the choice I’ve made–the rest of the world be damned.

Spoken Word: Strange Star

Download: strangestar.mp3

The flowers that thrived, deep in the valley had been blooming non-stop for over one hundred years…

The redolent profusion of colors and deep tropical scents were rumored to have driven many pilgrims who visited the mountains, stark mad. At least, that was the legend in the lowlands beyond the misty mountain range.

Elissa Dardo, Inspector General for the great metropolis across the sea, made such a pilgrimage during the course of performing her duty.

She returne...

#FridayFlash: Tribute (+ Get the Free Ebook!)

Rastaman gone somewhat astray, the devout artist had adopted flesh for his canvas. Everything about him was dark, the curl of his brows, his countenance when he eased back and stood studying his handiwork.

The silent woman in the claw-toed tub sat leaning forward. The thick braid of her hair was twisted into a samurai’s knot. Like his hand, the bathwater was muddy with her blood and neat little slivers of her skin. The pattern three quarter ways carved into her back was Yggdrasil with gnarly r...

Charge Up Your Creativity!

The key to creativity is rampant curiosity, experimentation and cultivating a fertile mind. Does that sound about right?

For some time now, creativity has been synonymous with “thinking outside the box” but that cliché begins to sound obnoxiously glib when you’re struggling to break through a creative impasse. Besides, ask any Whovian and you’ll be promptly informed that sometimes, the box is “bigger on the inside”—in any case, I digress.

The insights I’d like to share today were delivered by s...

Lightspeed Magazine – Women Destroy Science Fiction!

Tonya R. Moore:

I can’t believe I didn’t know about this until yesterday! I want to submit something. I wonder if I can have one of my W.I.P.s completed in time…?

This morning, I decided to make this little directory (specficmarkets.wordpress.com) to keep track of all the magazines and publications that interest me.

This works a lot better for me than scribbles and bookmarks all over the place, and I figured keeping a list might be useful to my fellow spec-fic wordsmiths too.

If you have any ques...
