Sally Ember, Ed.D: Utopian Sci-fi/Speculative Fiction: Why it’s Intriguing & Necessary
Writers are often exhorted to “write the books we want to read,” especially when they seem not to exist, yet. I am following that advice with my ebooks in The Spanners Series. I know what I want to read and what I can’t find because I am a life-long, avid reader. I have probably read hundreds of thousands of books in my 56 years of reading independently and quickly, sometimes enjoying ten books a week. If I say books like mine—more utopian sci-fi/speculative fiction series like The Spanners—d...

Blood Binds #8
A thing like that…
“Blasted idiot nightwalker.” An embarrassed lump swelled up in Tallow’s throat.
She stomped through the woods, crashing this way and that, blinded by indignation. That damnable night walker was always doing that, poking at her armor and making her think and do things that never occurred to her before. He was always quietly watching her with those, deceptively somnolent eyes.
He wanted something. Nothing new there. Someone, somewhere always wanted something...

Shifra Hochberg: The Lost Catacomb
An intoxicating blend of Vatican thriller and heart-rending love story, THE LOST CATACOMB is a stunning debut novel set against the backdrop of the Holocaust in Italy.
At its heart is Nicola Page, a beautiful young art historian who flies to Rome to assess a newly discovered catacomb of enigmatic provenance. Its magnificent frescoes hold the clues to a centuries-old murder and the existence of a fabled treasure from the ancient Temple in Jerusalem.
Assisted by a handsome Italian archaeologist,...

FridayFlash: Bargaining
Beakman finally showed up at dawn. He didn’t knock or call out for Else. He just stood there at her door, silently waiting for her to notice him staring at her through the glass.
He was definitely an oddity. Else just wasn’t sure what kind. The only form she’d ever seen him take was of a man’s body with a bird’s black beak and eyes. He reminded her of a heron or maybe a giant heron wearing a penguin suit.
It wasn’t just his inhuman freakishness that unsettled her. The guy was an arrogant creep,...

Flashfic: Signal
Great grandmother’s hands were brown and crinkled like the cedar tree in her backyard, yet to shed its papery bark. It was dark out and the cloudless sky was infested with countless flickering lights. Sweet warmth suffused the air with the faint scent of rot from the ground beneath the mango trees drooping down-slope.
Elijah clutched nervously at the pocket of her skirt. He was tiny and timid, the sleeves of his star-speckled pajamas rolled up to his skinny elbows. He trailed after the old wom...

Lee Balan: Speculative Fiction – What’s it For?
I’m very pleased to introduce today’s guest author, Lee Balan who shares his thoughts on Speculative Fiction and shares an excerpt ofhis SF web series, Red City.
Let’s just say that Speculative Fiction asks questions and poses answers formulated through imaginative conjecture. The writer has access to anything his imagination can create in order to manifest stories to solve the riddles of the universe. The one element that separates this kind of story from other forms of fiction is the questio...

The Trouble With Time Travel
Time travel is what we call the notion of moving from one point in time to another, by means other than simply existing throughout the passage of time. If my present self were to somehow physically visit the past or the future, I would have achieved time travel.
Popular science suggests that time travel should be possible in some way, shape or form but the truth is, humans know too little about time itself to claim with much confidence that time travel is either possible or impossible.
We have...
