My Holiday Favorites in the Winter Warm-Up #Giveaway H0p

Welcome to my Winter Warm-Up Blog Hop Spot! I love the holiday season, although I seem to love something different about it each year. This year I really enjoyed decorating my house. Some years I didn’t even decorate, but this year something moved me to do it and I loved it. Other years, my favorite part is shopping, or baking cookies and other treats. But every year, I love watching my family open the gifts I got them and seeing how big I can make the smiles on their faces.

Excerpt from The Alpha’s Secret

Bridget parked down the block from The Weeping Widow, a pub/tavern that claimed roots back in the colonial days. It certainly looked the part, with its wood timbers and dark interior. When Bridget told the hostess who she was meeting, she was told they hadn’t arrived yet, and was seated at a table for four. She glanced at her watch. Noon, on the nose. At least she hadn’t been late again.

A couple of minutes later, Bridget felt a powerful tingling, just like she had the night before on the phone. The outside door opened, and the most delicious smell wafted inside. It smelled like forest and sex and home. She couldn’t imagine what it was, but she had to find out. She stood to go look.

Her eyes met those of two wolves. From across the room, she couldn’t scent them to know they were wolves, but she just knew. Just as she knew what the scent meant, and who they were.

Her mates.

Bridget’s pulse pounded in her neck. She didn’t want mates. She’d never wanted mates. Shit. She sat down.

The two wolves walked quickly across the room to her, but she wouldn’t meet their eyes. She fought the urge to run. Their chairs scraped across the floor as they sat down.

“That’s why…” one of them said.

The other said, “Yeah. That’s why.” He reached out and took her hand where it rested on the table. “Bridget?”

She jerked and looked up at him, immediately caught by his eyes like a rabbit in a trap.

“We can skip lunch,” the other one said. “Find a hotel somewhere.”

The mating urge must be riding him hard. Hell, it was riding her hard. Her body had turned to a soft mush all centered between her legs. If she weren’t so scared, she’d be dragging them out of the restaurant and finding the nearest alley. She pulled her hand away.

“I’m Gavin,” the big one said. His dark hair and chocolate eyes made him exactly what she’d always found attractive—big, dark and sexy. If only he weren’t her mate.

“Liam,” the other one said. He wasn’t small, either, though he didn’t have the big muscles Gavin did. Liam was slimmer, lean and mean, his hair cut short in a dark buzz cut. His eyes were a striking blue.

She wasn’t sure what to say, so she went with the obvious. “I’m Bridget.” Her voice sounded small.

Neither of them would take their eyes off her. She felt naked and exposed.

“Let’s get lunch,” Gavin said. He flipped open his menu.

Liam gave a very faint whine, his wolf protesting the delay. He continued to gaze at Bridget. “I never thought I’d be lucky enough to have mates.”

Bridget couldn’t take it. She stood, dropping her napkin onto her seat. “I’ll be right back.” Then she fled to the bathroom.

“What’s wrong?” Liam asked Gavin. He’d found his mates. They should be kissing now, on their way to the closest bed. But she was obviously upset. “I don’t get it.”

Gavin gazed at the bathroom door. “I don’t, either. Something’s not right. She’s acting…”

“Scared. But she doesn’t have any reason to be scared of us. We’d never hurt her.” Liam didn’t know what he felt, himself. When he’d first scented her and then seen her across the room, he’d felt so excited. This was what he’d always wanted—mates of his own. Someone to come home to, someone to protect.

Then when he’d seen her body language, his wolf had nearly had a fit. She acted like someone had hurt her. Why else would she be afraid of them, two strangers who’d never done her any harm?

But he felt hurt, too. Why would his mate reject him when she didn’t even know him?

Bridget returned to the table, avoiding their eyes. Her hands shook a little as she replaced her napkin on her lap. “I’m sorry. I know this probably isn’t what you expected when you found your mates.” She took a breath. “The thing is, I don’t want mates.”

Ouch. “Why? What’s wrong with us?”

She met his eyes and he felt it like a kick in the gut. Hers were a warm blue, fringed with lashes the color of her reddish brown hair. Her lips looked full and kissable. “There’s nothing wrong with you,” she said fiercely. “Nothing at all. I just…I’ve never wanted to be mated. I’d hoped it wouldn’t happen and then I wouldn’t have to deal with…this.”

“Why?” Gavin said, face hard.

Liam had known the alpha a few weeks now. And while he was every bit as strong as any other alpha Liam had met, Gavin tended to be more low key. He didn’t flex his muscles unless he had to. Liam had asked him about it once, and Gavin had told him he’d had to curb his natural instincts when he became a detective, because he made a much better detective if he blended into the woodwork than if he walked in, fists flying. But now the alpha was back.

Bridget shook her head. “There isn’t a particular reason. I just never—”

“That’s not good enough. Did someone hurt you?” Gavin’s voice was soft, too soft. Like a wolf on the prowl.

“No. I mean, yes, but no. It’s not like that.”

“Then why? We’ve been given an incredible gift. Why don’t you want it?” Gavin was starting to sound angry.

“Just tell us why,” Liam said. He fought the urge to reach out and take her hand.

“I don’t know, all right? I just—I just don’t want to be owned.”

Owned?

She stood. “I have to go.”

“No, wait,” Gavin said. Both men stood, but she’d already gone half the length of the restaurant.

“Should we go after her?” Liam said. His hands felt clammy.

“Let’s give her time to cool off. Maybe she’ll change her mind.”

A Wish List of Books: Christmas Wonder #Giveaway H0P

Celebrate the Wonder of the Season! Visit all of the blogs to see what they love most about the season and which books have made their Christmas wish lists! There’s a giveaway at each stop so be sure to visit them all!

The holiday season is upon us. One of the things I like best about this time of year is getting to spend time with my family (parents and sibling). I live a thousand miles away from them but we get together at both Thanksgiving and Christmas and it’s a special time for us to keep our bonds strong. I also love the trappings of the season, the decorations and festive lights, and I love getting cards from friends who I often only hear from once a year.

And of course I love the books! I always get books in some form for Christmas, although in the past few years I’m more likely to get a gift card for my Kindle than paperbacks. This year I’m hoping for a copy of The Penguin Book of Witches, some LCHF (low carb high fat) cookbooks, and The Essential Lenormand along with a gorgeous new deck, the Gilded Reverie Lenormand by Ciro Marchetti. With my Kindle gift card, I plan to pick up some new PNR and UF books, including the next Kresley Cole book, Shadow’s Claim (“next” for me!), Diana Gabaldon’s Dragonfly in Amber, Kelley Armstrong’s Waking the Witch, Ilona Andrews’ Burn for Me (if I don’t buy it sooner!), Keri Arthur’s Dangerous Games, and maybe one of Anne Bishop’s books.

Excerpt from Her Vampire Mate

Antonio left his hand on the werewolf’s neck, massaging her with his fingers. She might be everything he didn’t look for in a woman but he felt an overwhelming urge to find out more about her.

For a moment, he felt her relax into him. Her head fell back just the slightest inch. Then she jerked away and headed for the outside door.

He hurried to keep up with her—not too difficult with his vampire speed. “Thought we were teaming up.”

“To talk to the building manager,” she said. “That’s it.”

He put his hand on her back. “You sure? I bet we could make magic together.”

She sucked in her breath and walked even faster.

“What’s your name, sweetness?”

She stopped and turned to him. For a moment, her eyes wavered then met his. “This isn’t going to work.” As she turned and stalked away, he heard her murmur, “What the hell am I going to do?”

Antonio knew what he wanted to do and it didn’t have anything to do with finding a world-walker.

Jennalynn turned the door handle and pushed the door open, producing a lot less noise than she’d expected. When she stepped into the room, Mr. Tight Buns turned toward her. A lock of his dark brown hair had fallen out of the small queue at the back of his neck and down onto his forehead. His chocolatey eyes met hers as he straightened.

She kept her eyes on him but couldn’t miss that the room was empty. Completely empty—no furniture, no nothing. “What are you doing in Phillip’s apartment?” Might as well pretend to be an indignant friend of the missing Phillip Kent. Maybe he could explain why Kent’s stuff was gone.

“I could ask you the same thing, angel.”

His voice caressed her at the same time his scent reached her. It told her several things about him but most became buried by the rush of emotion and sensation that swept over her. She could never have imagined being turned to molten lava by a smell and a handful of words. This could only mean one thing. She’d found her mate.

Worse, her mate was a fucking vampire.

When the woman moved, Antonio knew instantly she was a werewolf. There was something about their lithe bodies, the way their muscles moved. He’d never been able to put his finger on it, but he’d never been wrong, either.

As a rule, he didn’t like werewolves. At the same time, there was something extremely sexy about her. There shouldn’t have been. He liked long hair and while her chestnut hair was long, it was pulled back from her face and fell in a braid down her back, masking its beauty. And while he preferred curves, she looked more muscled than lush. He preferred sweet, demur women like the blonde in the restaurant. This woman looked like she’d have a good shot at taking him in a fight.

Not that it mattered. When it came down to it, he loved women. Surely he could find something to love about this one.

After he finished perusing her body, he took another look at her face. Her bright blue eyes were wide, her full lips slightly open.

“Surprised to see me?” he said.

She cleared her throat. “What are you doing in Phillip’s home?”

“Sticking with that tune? I can tell you’re a werewolf. What is it you’re doing in Phillip’s home?” His tone twisted on the man’s name.

After licking her lips, she said, “Who are you?”

What was up with her? She looked positively shell-shocked. “You can hardly expect me to answer.”

“Fine. Vamp. Don’t answer.” She spun on her heel and left the apartment.

My Sexy Saturday: Crave

Bridget parked down the block from The Weeping Widow, a pub/tavern that claimed roots back in the colonial days. It certainly looked the part, with its wood timbers and dark interior. When Bridget told the hostess who she was meeting, she was told they hadn’t arrived yet, and was seated at a table for four. She glanced at her watch. Noon, on the nose. At least she hadn’t been late again.

A couple of minutes later, Bridget felt a powerful tingling, just like she had the night before on the phone. The outside door opened, and the most delicious smell wafted inside. It smelled like forest and sex and home. She couldn’t imagine what it was, but she had to find out. She stood to go look.

Her eyes met those of two wolves. From across the room, she couldn’t scent them to know they were wolves, but she just knew. Just as she knew what the scent meant, and who they were.

Her mates.

Bridget’s pulse pounded in her neck. She didn’t want mates. She’d never wanted mates. Shit. She sat down.

The two wolves walked quickly across the room to her, but she wouldn’t meet their eyes. She fought the urge to run. Their chairs scraped across the floor as they sat down.

“That’s why…” one of them said.

The other said, “Yeah. That’s why.” He reached out and took her hand where it rested on the table. “Bridget?”

She jerked and looked up at him, immediately caught by his eyes like a rabbit in a trap.

“We can skip lunch,” the other one said. “Find a hotel somewhere.”

The mating urge must be riding him hard. Hell, it was riding her hard. Her body had turned to a soft mush all centered between her legs. If she weren’t so scared, she’d be dragging them out of the restaurant and finding the nearest alley. She pulled her hand away.

“I’m Gavin,” the big one said. His dark hair and chocolate eyes made him exactly what she’d always found attractive—big, dark and sexy. If only he weren’t her mate.

“Liam,” the other one said. He wasn’t small, either, though he didn’t have the big muscles Gavin did. Liam was slimmer, lean and mean, his hair cut short in a dark buzz cut. His eyes were a striking blue.

She wasn’t sure what to say, so she went with the obvious. “I’m Bridget.” Her voice sounded small.

Neither of them would take their eyes off her. She felt naked and exposed.

“Let’s get lunch,” Gavin said. He flipped open his menu.

Liam gave a very faint whine, his wolf protesting the delay. He continued to gaze at Bridget. “I never thought I’d be lucky enough to have mates.”

Bridget couldn’t take it. She stood, dropping her napkin onto her seat. “I’ll be right back.” Then she fled to the bathroom.

“What’s wrong?” Liam asked Gavin. He’d found his mates. They should be kissing now, on their way to the closest bed. But she was obviously upset. “I don’t get it.”

Gavin gazed at the bathroom door. “I don’t, either. Something’s not right. She’s acting…”

“Scared. But she doesn’t have any reason to be scared of us. We’d never hurt her.” Liam didn’t know what he felt, himself. When he’d first scented her and then seen her across the room, he’d felt so excited. This was what he’d always wanted—mates of his own. Someone to come home to, someone to protect.

Then when he’d seen her body language, his wolf had nearly had a fit. She acted like someone had hurt her. Why else would she be afraid of them, two strangers who’d never done her any harm?

But he felt hurt, too. Why would his mate reject him when she didn’t even know him?

Bridget returned to the table, avoiding their eyes. Her hands shook a little as she replaced her napkin on her lap. “I’m sorry. I know this probably isn’t what you expected when you found your mates.” She took a breath. “The thing is, I don’t want mates.”

Ouch. “Why? What’s wrong with us?”

She met his eyes and he felt it like a kick in the gut. Hers were a warm blue, fringed with lashes the color of her reddish brown hair. Her lips looked full and kissable. “There’s nothing wrong with you,” she said fiercely. “Nothing at all. I just…I’ve never wanted to be mated. I’d hoped it wouldn’t happen and then I wouldn’t have to deal with…this.”

“Why?” Gavin said, face hard.

Liam had known the alpha a few weeks now. And while he was every bit as strong as any other alpha Liam had met, Gavin tended to be more low key. He didn’t flex his muscles unless he had to. Liam had asked him about it once, and Gavin had told him he’d had to curb his natural instincts when he became a detective, because he made a much better detective if he blended into the woodwork than if he walked in, fists flying. But now the alpha was back.

Bridget shook her head. “There isn’t a particular reason. I just never—”

“That’s not good enough. Did someone hurt you?” Gavin’s voice was soft, too soft. Like a wolf on the prowl.

“No. I mean, yes, but no. It’s not like that.”

“Then why? We’ve been given an incredible gift. Why don’t you want it?” Gavin was starting to sound angry.

“Just tell us why,” Liam said. He fought the urge to reach out and take her hand.

“I don’t know, all right? I just—I just don’t want to be owned.”

Owned?

She stood. “I have to go.”

“No, wait,” Gavin said. Both men stood, but she’d already gone half the length of the restaurant.

“Should we go after her?” Liam said. His hands felt clammy.

“Let’s give her time to cool off. Maybe she’ll change her mind.”

Mid Week Tease: Hot Werewolf Menage

Today I’m offering up a brief excerpt from The Alpha’s Secret, part of The Alpha’s Downfall, the Stonewall Pack Alpha Boxed Set coming out this week. In this scene, Bridget is struggling with not wanting to be mated while her two fated mates, Gavin and Liam, try to convince her otherwise. Enjoy!

“Tell us what it is,” Liam said.

She rounded on him, enunciating every word. “I don’t know what it is.”

Liam sat back in his chair. “Then what—”

She stood, the chair legs screeching, and made a cutting motion with her hands. “I just feel scared, okay? You’re both more dominant than me. Everyone’s more dominant than me. You’re going to steamroll right over me until nothing’s left.” Her face turned angry. “And that’s if you don’t turn mean after we’ve mated and start beating me.”

“Beating you,” Gavin echoed, his voice hollow.

It didn’t make sense. “What makes you think male mates beat their female mates?” Liam said. He’d never heard of such a thing. Females were to be cherished and protected.

“I don’t know,” she whispered. “I just know it happens.”

Gavin sat forward. “Did you see it?”

“I don’t know.” She sat down again, not looking at either of them. “I’ve always felt this way.”

Liam met Gavin’s eyes, and immediately knew what he was thinking. There was a story here. A mystery. And who better than two PIs to figure it out. She might think they couldn’t fix it, but she was wrong.

In the meantime, there were other approaches they could take. “What if you get to know us before we take things further?” Liam said. “If you find out we’re good guys, will that make a difference?”

“Maybe,” she said softly.

She squeezed his hand. “Okay.” She let out a little huff of breath. “I feel so scared. At the same time, I feel like…”

“Like you trust us?” Gavin said.
