Who are Your favorite kickass heroines? #FavoriteHeroines2015

favorite heroines

One of my favorite things about writing stories is that I get to explore so many different types of heroines, all of them fascinating in their own way. Since this hop is devoted to kickass heroines, I want to share with you one of my favorite kickass heroines from one of my favorite authors, and then tell you a little about two of the heroines I’ve written about.

Kate Daniels, heroine of the urban fantasy series by Ilona Andrews, is awesome. I loved her from the first time I read about her in Magic Bites when she faced down The Beast Lord, Cullen (who was scary at first but became an oh-so-hot love interest). Later, she fought in the pits and had to consider making a huge sacrifice in order to save her friends. I could go on, but you get the idea. (And I’m trying SO hard not to give up any spoilers.) She’s tough, she fights, she cares. She’s awesome.

In my book, Her Scottish Alpha, the heroine Keira Harlow and her sister Gillian (heroine of the yet-to-be-published His Dragon Heart) are twins who are Dragon Slayers. They burst into the scene brandishing guns and long, wicked knives and refusing to take ‘no’ for an answer. Keira and Gill are two of my kickass heroines. :)

Who are some of your favorite kickass heroines? Let us know in the comments–and bonus, your comment can count toward one entry in my giveaway!

June 17th-24th we’re sharing our favorite kickass heroines! Come meet these awesome ladies and find out why they’re the best of the best. Be sure to stop by each blog. There’s a giveaway at every stop!

But first, I have a new release out called A Minor Shift. This kicks off a new series called White Fir Bend Cult, and is free on all stores. The heroine, Eva, doesn’t get to kick much ass in this short story, but she could. Check out an excerpt below!

Excerpt from A Minor Shift

Bowie Garrison couldn’t get Eva out of his mind. He’d tried, over and over, but ever since they met in Afghanistan she’d driven all thoughts of any other woman out of his mind. And when she’d left to return to the States, he’d felt the loss far more than he should.

For that reason alone, the last thing he should do is contact her.

Her face had haunted his dreams for months, her face and her lusciously curvy body and her sleek, long black hair. Her dark eyes had taunted him.

He sat on the couch and gazed at his phone, her number already keyed in, just waiting for him to push the button. He wanted to see her again. Was that really so bad?

His buddy Kane jostled his arm. They sat side by side in the common room of their temporary lodgings while Kane played a video game on the TV directly opposite them. Kane looked squared away, as usual. He might be hanging out with nowhere to go but he still wore an ironed T-shirt and jeans, his short dark hair neatly trimmed. “Aren’t you playing?”

“Not now.” Bowie had a decision to make, and obliterating aliens wouldn’t help. Should he call her? Would it drive him stark, raving mad if he didn’t?

Excerpt from A Minor Shift:

Eva crossed a street and strode down the final block of her walk. Her building sat at the end, three stories of red brick. As she neared it, she saw two men standing at the foot of the steps. Two big, well-muscled, lethal-looking men.

Bowie and Kane.

Damn it. What part of ‘she had a date’ did he not get? He couldn’t possibly know she’d lied about it.

Eva slowed, wondering if she should turn around. She could go around the block and use the building’s back door instead.

Before she’d made up her mind, Bowie spotted her. He stalked toward her and she couldn’t stop the thrill that raced through her body at the sight. He looked like a predator going after his prey. And damn him, but he looked even better than she remembered, his strawberry blond crew cut just long enough so that his hair had started to curl, his skin tan, his body hard.

“Eva.”

And there was that voice, that warm, rumbly voice that touched her in ways it really shouldn’t. She’d forgotten how easily he could warm her up inside with just a word.

“Where’s your date?” His gaze intense, his words had slipped from rumbly to gravel. His lion was perilously close to the surface.

She didn’t want to lie to him again. “What are you doing here?”

He gripped her upper arm. Not too tight, just firmly enough that she’d have to struggle to get away. “Where is he?” His eyes turned from blue to a burnished gold.

This wasn’t like him. He was always so laid back. “Bowie? What’s wrong?”

He leaned his face closer to hers. From anyone else, it would have been an intimidating move but with him, it was intimate. “It makes me crazy to think about you with someone else.”

‘Crazy’ was the right word for it. She’d never seen that look in his eyes before. Should she tell him the truth?

“Where is he?” His hand tightened on her upper arm. “I’m going to fight him, show you that I’m the one you should be with.”

The air stuck in her chest until she coughed. She had to tell him. “There’s no date.”

“Don’t tell me that. Where is he?”

Her breathing sped up. “I lied, okay? There’s no date.”

His mouth opened but nothing came out. His hand relaxed around her arm but he didn’t let go.

Little ants crawled around in her stomach. “Bowie?”

“Why?” The whisper was barely a puff of air, but she heard him.

“I can’t date right now. I’m just getting started at the FBI and I have to focus on that. It’s everything to me. And you—you wouldn’t just be a one night stand or a friend with benefits. I know that. So I can’t. I can’t do this.” She took a step backward. She’d said far more than she’d meant to.

He shadowed her, his hand still holding her arm. “You feel this too.”

Eva backed up another step. “Bowie, stop.”

When he stepped into her, she felt the fence at her back. “Don’t fight it, sweetie,” he said. “You’ve got it all wrong. I won’t get in the way of your career. I’ll do everything I can to support you.”

Before she could argue with him further, he leaned down and pressed his mouth against hers.

Werewolves: Hidden Among Us? Come Join the #HowlingGoodHop! #pnr #romance

HGH 600x250

There are tons of great prizes in this hop including $200 in gift cards in the grand prize drawing, so make sure to enter below!

There’s something I’ve been pondering lately, since it’s relevant to the story I’m currently writing… how does it affect the story when shifters are known to the humans around them vs. when they have to hide it? I’ve written both kinds of stories. In the Stonewall Pack Alpha series (excerpt from the first book is below!) the humans don’t know about the werewolves and so the werewolves have to keep their otherworldliness hidden. That leads to some issues and also leads some wolves to establish their own all-wolf town, Lunaville.

In another of my series, Colliding Worlds, humans are very aware of the various creatures around them. That has its own problems, such as in Her Forbidden Alpha where a group of human supremacists go after the North American Pack Alpha. (Well…he did just kidnap the daughter of their general, so the attack wasn’t entirely unprovoked.)

Or for instance, to take from popular culture, in Twilight, humans don’t know about the vampires. In True Blood, the vampires have come out. Both situations have consequences.

At the moment, I’m working on a new novel where humans don’t know about shifters and it’s going to end up causing some big problems later in the series. Want to have some fun? Tell me what kinds of problems you think shifters might have if they have to hide their shifter halves from the humans around them. Let me know in the comments–and make sure to check that off in my giveaway (it counts!). :)

Excerpt from The Alpha’s Pack

Sam had found his mates. Feelings—joy, love, excitement—threatened to overwhelm him. So he did what he always did when that happened. He thought about details. “What now?” Sam said.

“We find a house in neutral territory and move in together,” Jake said.

Sam sat up. “What about our packs? I’ve got a house already. You two should move in with me.” He had a great house, an awesome pack. He loved his job, which was in Pack territory. If he left the pack he’d lose everything.

“And join your pack?” Jake said. “No, thanks.”

“I’m highly ranked. It would be no problem for you two to join,” Sam said. He was fourth in line, actually. Fourth, and inordinately proud of it. It had taken a hell of a lot of work to get there.

“I said no.” Jake’s voice was sharp.

“What do you have against packs?” Sam said. Maybe he’d had a bad experience. Maybe Sam could show him how good packs could be.

“None of your business,” Jake said.

Deirdre slid her hand up Jake’s back. “It is our business now. If you’re not ready to tell us, that’s okay. But don’t shut us out forever.”

Jake took a deep breath. “What about you?” he said to Deirdre. “I suppose you want to stay with your pack, too.”

She got up and wandered over to the window, pulling aside the curtain. “No. But I can’t leave my sister there.”

“So bring her with you,” Jake said.

“You don’t understand.” She dropped the curtain and turned toward them. “My pack leader is really possessive. I don’t know if he’ll let either of us leave.”

It’s April–That Means it’s Raining #Romance! H0p #Giveaway

Raining-Books-Giveaway-Hop

Isn’t April wonderful? In my family-of-origin, we have several birthdays in April, so it’s always a time for celebrating! And now that I’m grown and living in the Midwest, April is also the time when we start to hope that maybe, maybe we’ve seen the last of the snow for this year. (Alas, sometimes those hopes are dashed.)

But this year, April is extra-special. Raining romance books? I can’t think of anything better! Plus, Outlander has just started again. I’ve been waiting for the second half of the season since last fall, so I’m very excited!

To celebrate both romance books and the Scottishness of Outlander, I’m offering you an excerpt from my short story Her Kilted Wolf. And even better, this book is free on all stores, so if you like the excerpt, you can read the rest!

What do you like about April? :) Let us know in the comments and don’t forget to enter my giveaway for an ebook copy of my Stonewall Pack Alpha boxed set.

Excerpt from Her Kilted Wolf

Mattie followed the scent out of the room and into the hallway. The scent trail seemed fresh, and yet her mate wasn’t there. Maybe he had already left before she got there?

She continued to follow the scent. When she got to the second turn, she knew she’d never find her way back without help, so she pulled out her cell phone and took video of each of the twists and turns. Hopefully, she’d find her mate at the end of this journey and he could lead her back to the Great Hall, but if not, she’d need the footage.

Darius would wonder where she’d gone, but he’d understand once she explained. Finding your mate was everything.

Who would he be? A wolf, hopefully. But if he was a wolf, why hadn’t he scented her?

Mattie jogged up some stone stairs, still following the delicious smell. With just the scent in her nose, she already felt like melting. She wanted to find her mate and drag him to the nearest bed where they could wallow in each other until their scents were so mixed no one could tell them apart.

What if he wasn’t a wolf? Other species didn’t necessarily know when they’d found their mates. Sometimes they had to be convinced, and it wasn’t always a fun experience.

The scent trail suddenly dead-ended at a tall wooden door, the fifth such door on that hall. Worse, the door was closed. What should she do? Should she knock? She shifted from one foot to the other, trying to decide what to do.

The door in front of her jerked open and a tall, half-naked male stood in front of her, a towel tied around his waist and his wet hair sticking up. “You came.” He grinned, his blue eyes lighting up.

Before she could say anything, he grabbed her around the waist and yanked her against him, covering her mouth with his.

Oh, mama.
