Smuttin’ It Up, Southern Style

Couple embracing on black couchBy Elizabeth Shore

C.M. Kempe has kindly let me take her Friday spot this week because, as you’ve noticed from our other recent posts, I’m quite happy to say that today is the official release date of my erotic contemporary Hot%20Bayou NightsHot Bayou Nights. *Squee!* As Kool and the Gang puts it,  Cellllll – ah- bra – tion time, come on!

When I reflect back on the journey of getting this book from an idea in my head to a book on the shelf (or e-reader), I remember my wonderful editor Trish Owens from The Wild Rose Press contacting me when she’d decided to buy the book. She said she loved the story and she loved the heat, but I would still need to “smut it up” just a bit more. Well, color me happy to accommodate! I love writing hot scenes and could easily crank up the fire several notches for this book. So to get the smutty party started, I began by thinking about sweat.

Sweat, to me, is damn sexy stuff. Think back to the movie A Time To Kill with Matthew McConaughey. There’s a scene when he’s on the floor talking to wife Ashley Judd. The atmosphere is thick and hot and dense, and their bodies are covered with a sheen of sweat shiny as an oil slick. And boy oh boy, is it ever hot – and I don’t mean just the temperature.

My book is set in the Louisiana bayou. What captivated me in the first place about setting this book there is the sultriness of the place. No problems with heat and humidity there, so no problems with sweat. Problem solved.

My smutty thoughts then traveled to those heady, lust-filled moments when you and your partner just have to do it. There’s no  “well, it’d be great but I’ve got a meeting to attend,” or “yeah, I’m looking forward to a hop in your pants later tonight, babe.” No no NO. I’m talking about those moments when you’re hit with the inability to think of anything at all except the raging desire to mate. You’re both humming so hard with roaring sexual lust that you don’t even care if anyone sees you but you’ve got to have. sex. now. So I got my characters panting like dogs and put them in the middle of a busy area with lots of people walking by. Hormones are zinging. No time for soft, sweet lovemaking, folks. What these two need is a good ol’ fashioned f**k. Cue the library! It gets the job done.

My smutting up quest also extended to the length of description. The big O, for example. “Draw it out,” Trish suggested. “Let the readers enjoy the build-up as much as the heroine.” The advice is perfect, but the challenge can be difficult, especially when there are multiple scenes of her – and his – release. Writers are tempted to draw from their go-to bag of word tricks, but this can put us in dangerous territory with repeated phrases and descriptions. I only hope that I added appropriate sexiness to the scenes without them becoming rote.

Last but not least, I wanted to make sure that I really did capture the flavor of the Louisiana bayou, so naturally I included a restaurant scene. Liz Everly wrote in her post on Tuesday a decadent description of southern cuisine and the spices that make them sexy.  In the restaurant scene  my hero and heroine get the heat cranked over Louisiana creole foods like jumbalaya, étouffée,  and crawfish, to name just a few. And naturally, all those spices lead to some heavy duty desire, and then … well, y’all just have to read the book to find out.

Snakes & The Single Girl

Raiders of the Lost Arc: Could you get any more metaphorical?

Raiders of the Lost Arc: Could you get any more metaphorical?

by Madeline Iva

In RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARC Indy is one courageous guy–except for one thing–he hates snakes.

“Snakes, why’d it have to be snakes?” Indiana Jones says, before the evil guys trap him in a crypt covered in writhing cobras and vipers.   Once he’s down in the snake pit he’s tossed a female companion by the Nazi’s.  It’s his ex, Marion, who lands right into his arms.

This is where it all gets mighty symbolic, my friends.  She happens to be wearing a white dress, and he immediately starts to tear it off her.  To keep his torch lit.  Seriously–that’s why he needs her dress, to wrap it around the torch so they have fire to keep the snakes away.

You might say that snakes and the temptation to sin go hand in hand in movies–with enough heavy handed metaphor use to club a seal puppy to death.  Indy isn’t interested in love, erm, sex, until it’s tossed into his arms amidst the writhing symbolism all around him.  He’s a purist–an idealist, an intellectual.  He’s free from temptation–even towards all the young co-eds who lust for him at the university where he teaches.

Marion fights snakes, because she's plucky that way.

Marion fights snakes, because she’s plucky that way.

Marion definitely represents a more worldly presence in Indy’s life.  She’s all about pragmatism, impulse, and action.  She landed into the snake pit out of greed, pursuing something she felt belonged to her, only to find she got a little bit more than she bargained for. The white dress is becoming on her, but also a little ironic.  Indy’s the guy in the white hat (metaphorically speaking).

And that’s how it works with snakes.  Marion isn’t the only girl in white who’s impulsive desire for experience gets her fed to the asps.  BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER has a great episode where Cassandra, ever the social climber, wants to date the more experienced college boys, only to land her and Buffy into the midst of a secret cult that feeds girls to a snake god in return for financial success later in life.  Giles and Xander come to lend Buffy aid and once again sexual curiosity and the desire for experience on the part of women gets a big ole nasty smack down.  Buffy’ll just have to get her fang on later with Angel.

Beware all reptile boys from your local college.

Beware all reptile boys from your local college.

Marion in Raiders of the Lost Arc is a good girl–she’s plucky.  Buffy’s good too.  Both women are represented as multi-layered.  They have their curious side and are willing to flirt with the temptation to sin.  In LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM, a super-campy horror film directed by Ken Russell, you have a more straightforward dichotomy of yer evil sexy snake lady (representing sin, natch)

Evil snake lady offers temptation to yer local boy scout.

Evil snake lady offers temptation to yer local boy scout.

and the girl in white (with an excellent spray tan) who’s literally a virgin—because we see ole snake lady check her out on the spot.  Yes, it’s *that* kind of film.  While I love this film, (see my post on Horror Sex Camp HERE) I much prefer my heroines more complicated.

Virgin panties. Yep, that's what they look like--in the dark ages.

Virgin panties. Yep, that’s what they look like–in the dark ages.

Another film presenting us with a snake lady is BLADE RUNNER.  She’s literally draped in a snake for her costume.  She’s hiding from the law making her living dancing with the snake.  The MC in the background presents her act by saying (cue the bad German accent) the audience will see her dance with  “the snake who wants to hav his vay with her.”  Here the symbolism is about her original state of being.

“Watch her dance with ze snake who vants to haf his vay with her.”

She’s a replicant–a kind of cyborg/android–born into sin as it were, since she’s not one of God’s creations, and by falling away from her job (she’s an off world “pleasure” model) she is breaking the law and needs to be executed.  There’s much in this short sketch of a character that makes us understand the world of corruption she’s living in, to the point where she becomes like an animal–trying to survive, and trying to run, as she’s hunted down and killed.

What can we take away from all of this? Well for starters, lair

A) Poor snakes. A snake is just a snake–reclusive in general, they’re much more like Greta Garbo–they just want to be alone.  A lot of them are harmless, and a lot of them are just seeking a little warmth.  Like the kind found in your house (helpless shudder).  My friend’s sister recently found a five foot snake skin in her finished basement.  Cue the screaming here. It was a black snake skin, from a perfectly harmless snake, but….Eeesh! Mostly, when it comes to snakes, we humans want to be left alone too.

B) What’s the deal with snake enthusiasts? Is keeping a snake for a pet some kind of symbolic act for them, representing their desire to be seen as decadent or bad-ass and sexy-sinful? While we may admire snakes from afar and their pretty skins–beyond the tiny garter snake that keeps the garden pest free, do we really want to encourage any other intereactions with them? I think not. I mean, that pet python always ends up growing too big and then tries to each the family dog. Or the baby.  Or both.  You’d think people would learn by now.

And

C) Are we ever going to get over slut shaming of women who want sex? I mean, yeah, young women need to exercise caution because bad things can happen out there in the big, mean world, but when are we ever going to see the slut shamers be the bad guys? I think it’s their turn.

Spicy and Sweet Southern Nights

By Liz Everly

In celebrating Elizabeth Shore’s newest release Hot Bayou Nights, so far, my fellow Lady Smut bloggers have extolled the sexy virtues of Southern accents and country and modern bluegrass music. I’m here to tell you that for me one of the best parts of the south is its cuisine. Whether you are talking about low country grits or barbecue from the Carolinas, the regional plethora of delicious dining is amazing.

So my challenge is then to focus this blog post. FOCUS. Okay, I’ve gotten down to the basics. Not just food that might inspires a sexy and sultry Southern night, but the spices herbs that go into the foods. Of course these spices have reported aphrodisiac qualities. (You knew that was coming, right?)

Saffron

You’ll find saffron in many Southern rice dishes . Mostly Creole. Saffron has a special substance with a structure very similar to human hormones that is responsible for increasing the sensitivity of the erogenous zones.

Garlic

A powerful antioxidant and aphrodisiac—despite the odor—found in many Southern dishes. It improves blood circulation especially in the erogenous zones; and contains a chemical that stimulates the production of an enzyme responsible for erections.

Cayenne (and other) peppers

Food spiced with any kind of hot peppers are reported aphrodisiacs.  Along with vitamin C, capsaicin the other stimulating ingredient in hot chilies.  (Located in the seeds and membranes…more so in red than green chilies).  Capsaicin triggers the brain to produce endorphins, which makes you feel good.  The physical reactions experienced when eating spicy foods—increased heart rate, circulation, sweating and euphoria—are similar to how your body reacts during sex.  Chili, curry and all those sweat inducing foods are believed to have aphrodisiac effects because they produce results much like sex would. Think about it; spicy foods increase your heart rate and cause us to perspire. Sometimes extracts of cayenne and chilies are sold as an aphrodisiac, but the natural form is acceptable too.

Cinnamon and Vanilia

While the South is known for its spicy food, it’s also know for it’s sweets. In studies conducted by the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, the scent of a pumpkin pie was found to increase penile blood flow by 40 percent. The scent was also found to increase sexual desire in women. While the smell of pumpkin pie may conjure happy memories and a feeling of comfort and safety, it doesn’t hurt that a few individual ingredients in the recipe help the process along. Cinnamon and vanilla have also been touted for their abilities as aphrodisiacs.

Nutmeg

Researchers in India found that compounds in nutmeg extract may stimulate the nervous system of animals, leading to increased sexual activity. Plenty of nutmeg in pumkin pie—and even in some rice dishes.

Of course, when it comes to food I’ve always said the biggest aphrodisiac is a sitting down with the person you love and enjoying conversation and good food—no matter what the food is. What do you think?

In the mean time, check out Elizabeth’s book. C’mon you know you want to.

When corporate consultant Carla Saunders’ work takes her from the skyscrapers of Manhattan to a research facility in Louisiana filled with king cobra snakes, she sees her dreams of a job in Paris sinking into the swamp. But unexpected desire burns hotter than a sultry bayou night. The snakes terrify her, but lust for the scorching hot research scientist has her dreaming less about the Champs Élysées and more about being coiled in his arms. Obsessed with finding a cure for multiple sclerosis, Jackson Rivard’s got zero time for relationships. But when a lush, efficient business advisor sweeps into his lab, zero spikes to a hundred before he can shut off the engine. In theory, no-strings-attached sex is scientifically feasible, but having an ex whose fangs make a cobra’s seem modest brings new meaning to the phrase “once bitten, twice shy.” How can he protect his heart when Carla’s charming it out of hiding?

Smokin’ Hot Southern Sounds

by Kiersten Hallie Krum

There are a lot of hot things that can be found down south. Hot food. Hot men. Hot weather. And some smokin’ hot sounds.

I spent many years sneering at country music, home of the slide guitar and songs that praise the love of a good dog and a good truck and a not-so-good woman. But that stereotype is like any other–little bit of truth wrapped up in a whole lotta WTFery. Though I’m never going to like the twang of a slide guitar. That’s just not gonna happen.

My attitude toward country music changed back when I was working full-time and finishing my graduate degree. There were many late nights of me on the laptop with the country music radio station as my only company–that and the borderline crazy people who called into the station at that time of night. Those DJs should get hazard pay.

The fact that we had a country station in New Jersey was nothing short of miraculous (and it didn’t last for long). These were the heyday times of Shedaisy and the Dixie Chicks and Faith Hill and the phenomenon that is Shania Twain, Tim McGraw and Toby Keith and Keith Urban and megalith Garth Brooks who helped bring rock and pop into country. I wanted to live in some of those songs, revved up and ready for wild times and hot romance.

Like its antecedents in Celtic and folk music and the songs that came out of the hills, country music is story music, vignettes of loss and love and drinking and good times and triumph and faith and redemption and retribution and victory all wrapped up in a three to five-minute tune. And there’s lots of joy too, whether from a sharp zydeco swing or a fast fiddle on the fly. Country songs resonate with emotion. I’ll never be able to hear Martina McBride’s “Independence Day” and not get choked up on the chorus. The lyrics and harmonies of Mumford & Sons and Alison Krauss and Union Station make my heart happy,

Country music is back on the radio in New Jersey again but it seems the themes have retroed to those stereotypes with a dominance of male performers crooning about that chick in her tight blue jeans climbing in his truck. I love me some Luke Bryan, don’t get me wrong, especially when he’s shakin’ that prime bootie. But country music is arguably the home of female empowerment where women are taking the stage and taking names and I wished they just took the airwaves more often.

Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood blast the way forward for the women of their generation. The Band Perry’s lead singing sister can (and does) rock it hard with the best of them. Joy Williams from The Civil Wars, Hilary Scott from Lady Antebellum, Jennifer Nettles from Sugarland, and Miranda Lambert all power on as queens of country.

These days, most of the regular rotations on my iPod are songs from the show Nashville. Nashville is a show run by and spearheaded by women on screen and behind the scenes. But one of the many reasons why I love the show is the music.

When the show gets more soapy than I’d like, it’s the outstanding music that keeps me hooked, grounding the show in real, raw emotion and relationships with achingly beautiful melodies and harmonies. Nashville has an embarrassment of riches as the best songwriters in the city vie for a chance to be featured on the show.

Whether fun and flirty, deeply loving, or down right sizzling sexy, country songs know how to bring the romance. They tell the story about all kinds of love: New, long-term, young and fresh, experienced and rooted, broken and restored. Luke Bryan’s “I Don’t Want This Night To End” and “Drunk on Love” tell the story of a one-night stand that resonates for months until it becomes something real. Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” is a pain-filled admission of loneliness and longing after a breakup. And Faith Hill and Tim McGraw’s “Like We Never Loved At All” weeps with regret and lingering love.

One of the hottest places to be down south is deep in the bayou. More than one scorching love affair has ignited in the dark secrets of that mysterious and dangerous territory. This week, we’re celebrating the release of Lady Smut blogger Elizabeth Shore’s new novel Hot Bayou Nights.

Postscript: If you’re looking for a gorgeous movie about folk music, I highly recommend Songcatcher about a musicologist in the late 1800s who is researching and collecting Appalachian folk music in the mountains of western North Carolina. It also co-stars Aidan Quinn who knows how to make a woman sing…

Real Men Say Y’all: Celebrating the Southern Accent

If you're this close to his seersucker, congratulations!

If you’re this close to his seersucker, congratulations!

By Alexa Day

I’ve spent my adult life in the American South. I was raised in the Deep South and think of myself as part of the New South. So while I’m excited to kick off a Southern theme week to celebrate this Friday’s print release of Elizabeth Shore’s HOT BAYOU NIGHTS, I’ve had a tough time trying to decide what aspect of Southern living I wanted to bring into your homes. What facet of the South is the hottest and the sexiest?

It’s the accent. It marks a Southern man as a Southern man. Its nuances tell his story. Southern men tend to be discreet, but if you get one talking, his speech patterns will tell on him. His money, his education, his job, his family — yeah, his tongue will tell you. No matter what his circumstances are, that accent of his is smooth, disarming, and always a little seductive. When it’s weaponized, the Southern man’s accent can be used to get him just about anything he wants.

You might not have ready access to a Southern man. I wish I could remedy that for you; they’re a special breed. I can help you get pretty close to that special sound, though, with the help of some dedicated experts … and Hollywood.

Your first stop on the way to aural deliciousness should be the IDEA: International Dialects of English Archive. The IDEA makes for spectacular character research, if you’re writing someone who speaks accented English from anywhere in the world. (Be warned. You should only go to the Archive if you have time on your hands; you’re going to spend a lot of time clicking and listening.) Inside the IDEA, a rich repository of real Southern men are just hanging out, waiting to tell you a story. Have a listen to Georgia, South Carolina, and these prime exemplars from Alabama and North Carolina. And that’s just a tiny sample — the Archive is far more diverse than my selections in this post.

The entertainment industry has had a tough time getting this right, but there are bright lights on the big and small screens. I just want to touch on a couple of standouts.

Matthew McConaughey is in A Time to Kill, and while he sounds more or less like a Southerner should, he’s actually from Texas, and there is some debate regarding whether Texas is part of the South. Kevin Spacey and Oliver Platt both earn their seersucker. They both play attorneys — the sort of men who are used to having their own way in their own way — and they both sound the part.

The South's never been hotter. Click it and see.

The South’s never been hotter. Click it and see.

If you want to see the Southern accent done absolutely right, you owe it to yourself to see The Walking Dead. I had seen Andrew Lincoln in Love Actually more than once before The Walking Dead started. I had never seen David Morrissey before, but I have seen him since in an episode of Doctor Who. The Walking Dead‘s accent coach has those two British actors sounding not just like Americans, not just like Southerners, but like two men who have spent most of their lives in Georgia, where the show takes place.

So who else is getting that down home sound done right, and who sounds like Foghorn Leghorn? That’s the sort of discussion that’d keep a porchful of Southerners locked in friendly debate for hours. My advice? Try to keep them talking. They might not ever come up with answers, but at least you’ll enjoy the sound of the argument.

In the meantime, y’all need to follow Lady Smut and get in line for HOT BAYOU NIGHTS, coming right at you in print this Friday!

Red Hot and Boom!

Fourth of July Romances

by Madeline Iva

Happy 4th of July! (A little early.)

I *do* like fourth of July — not so much for the fire works, but for that official bright start of summer.  You can think of beer and blankets at the fireworks display, I think of front porches, small towns and bunting.  Lots of bunting.

my other favorite things about 4th of July (aside from bunting) are:

Chuao

You know you want it. Start your fourth of July party in your mouth. Click on photo to buy!

FIRECRACKER CHOCOLATE!  MADE with chocolate, spices, salt, and *pop rocks* it’s a party explosion in your mouth.  I can hear the pop rocks popping even with my mouth closed.  DH may be disgusted and rolling his eyes but I’m loving it!

SPARKLERS: the tamer safer *quieter* way to satisfy your pyro itch without setting the dogs into a frenzy, the cat under the bed, and the neighbors calling the police.sparklers

Wait…I smell something delicious—ah, it’s

tart 34th OF JULY TARTS

I’m obsessed with the creative possibilities here — and I say pie or cake is an always acceptable alternative to a tart.
