Wishes

When my son was a toddler, we'd often go for a walk next to a fairly busy road. One day he said, "Wanna see flatbed truck." As luck would have it, less than a minute went by before one passed.

Bright-eyed with delight, my son exclaimed, "Wanna see brontosaurus!" I explained that there weren't any more of those around.

"All right. Wanna see T. Rex!"

Fun Fact about Loons

They are skilled swimmers, divers, (and once they get going) flyers.

But they can't walk.

People often mention birds that can't fly, but non-walking birds, not so much.

A Loon (not) Alone

My first book was called A Loon Alone, a picture book about a loon chick. (No, not a loonling, although it looks more like a duck or goose than a chicken.) Anyway, for a few years after its publication, my parents kept giving me various types of models of loons as gifts. Glass, wood, clay, metal...they're all over my house.

They hired a craftsman who made duck decoys to make me a loon one, which I still have on my bookshelf. He'd never made a loon decoy before, because loons are endangered and can't be hunted. He said it made a change from all the mallards.

Praying Mantis Facts

I've read that the only insect which can look over its shoulder is the praying mantis.

I also know, from personal experience, that a praying mantis can sneer. My son reached down to pick up what he thought was a stick. It flew away, landed, and sneered at us.

(Don't) Let It Go

I had difficulty mounting a horse for quite a while. (I had very little upper body strength, which is why I was taking the lessons in the first place.) At first I'd need a leg up from the teacher. Then I reached the point where I could push myself up to the horse's side, with one foot in the stirrup. There I would hang on until the teacher could help me swing my leg over the horse's back.

One day, the horse (named Go Boy, I think) started side-stepping, as in dressage, while I was holding on for dear life. Somehow I didn't fall off. Sadly, YouTube wasn't around, because I'm sure this would have gone viral.

Falling Off Is Easy To Do

During the course of my riding lessons I have fallen off horses to the near and off sides, (which are left and right, for anyone who doesn't know), over the tail, and over the head.

The only way I haven't unwillingly left the saddle is by being plucked from it via a UFO's tractor beam.

Saddle Up--Way, Way Up

So I was ten years old and starting horseback riding lessons. I was thrilled. There were maybe ten kids in the class, and nine horses for us. Every other kid was in the saddle before me.

Then they brought in what I was supposed to ride, and I soon figured out why it took so long for them to bring my mount. They'd had to construct a time machine to bring in a brachiosaurus. Seriously, that was the largest horse I've ever seen.
