A Loon (not) Alone
My first book was called A Loon Alone, a picture book about a loon chick. (No, not a loonling, although it looks more like a duck or goose than a chicken.) Anyway, for a few years after its publication, my parents kept giving me various types of models of loons as gifts. Glass, wood, clay, metal...they're all over my house.
They hired a craftsman who made duck decoys to make me a loon one, which I still have on my bookshelf. He'd never made a loon decoy before, because loons are endangered and can't be hunted. He said it made a change from all the mallards.
