Author Visit for Brigid and the Butter

On February 2nd, I visited St. Louis School in Clarksville, Maryland to read my picture book Brigid and the Butter: A Legend about Saint Brigid of Ireland (https://www.amazon.com/Brigid-Butter-...). Many thanks to the St. Louis staff, especially media specialist Marti Ellerbrock, for inviting me there and helping to set up. They put up a world map so I could show the students where Ireland is, and projected the illustrations on a screen so everyone could get a good look at Apryl Stott's excellent work.

Many thanks also to the wonderful St. Louis students. There were about one hundred of them, from kindergarten through third grade. They were a very attentive group while I read, and asked some interesting questions afterward. "What language did St. Brigid speak?" "Did she travel to other countries?" "How long did it take her to milk a cow?" "Did she like the cows?" (I said that I certainly hoped so, since she had to spend so much time with them.)

New release!

Brigid and the Butter: A Legend about Saint Brigid of Ireland is my latest picture book. It describes an incident in the life of the famous Catholic saint, said to have known Saint Patrick. She was said to be very generous, even as a child, and was miraculously rewarded. Illustrations are by Apryl Stott.

Decisions, Decisions...

Just finished my fantasy novel manuscript. While I'm querying agents, I'm trying to decide which of my ideas to use for my next novel. They're all middle grade fantasies. One of them is a sequel to the one I've just finished.

Speech Surprises

Last Saturday, I gave a speech to the Carroll County chapter of the Maryland Writers' Association. Several things happened that surprised me:

1. I have a toy stuffed loon that gives a loon call. I made sure it worked the day before the speech. But when I held it up at a dramatic moment and squeezed...nothing! Oh, well. Bound to happen sooner or later.

2. My husband was very helpful. Not only did he provide advice about e-publishing (he was indispensable when I e-published my works), he also juggled, which entertained an adorable baby who was there and very well behaved.

3. I got to keep the posters publicizing my speech, which have my picture on them. One is vinyl and the right size for a tablecloth. I'm thinking of using it for a festive Thanksgiving dinner!

My Latest Picture Book Accepted for Publication!

Pauline Books and Media has just bought my latest picture book manuscript. It's titled "Bridget and the Butter: A Tale of Saint Bridget of Ireland." In it, I retell a legend about Bridget, an Irish saint who knew Saint Patrick. (He also appears in the book.) The story takes place when she was a girl, and its theme is the importance of generosity. I may change the spelling of the main character's name to Brigid. If so, that will take place in the upcoming editing process.

I wrote the book in July, 2014. I have written for Pauline Books and Media previously, for their children's magazine, My Friend, and in an anthology of children's stories called Family Matters. I wanted to work with them again, and they told me about their line of legends about saints, including Saint Nicholas and Saint Valentine.

So I did some research, and found a number of stories about how Saint Bridget gave butter to a hungry woman, and a miraculous event that followed.

I look forward to the editing process. When I have a specific publishing date, I will post it.
