My story, "The Fog Test", has been awarded the 2020 Magazine Merit Fiction Award by the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. This work originally appeared in the February, 2019 issue of Cricket magazine.

The Magazine Merit judges called my story "a clever science fiction tale of persistence."

New Story - Angel's A

Angel’s A
by
Pamela Love

Grandma’s Christmas present for Luke said: OPEN DECEMBER 24th. My brother, who’s almost two, tore off the giftwrap like a grizzly. “Toys!” he yelled.
“Hey, a Nativity scene,” I said. “Want to wrap stuff, Mom? I can play with Luke.”
“Thanks, Bridget.”
While she headed upstairs, I opened the box. Luke dumped everything out. As I set up the stable, he found the cow. “Moo,” he said.
“Yes, Cow says, ‘Moo.’ Put Cow in the stable, okay?” He put it on the stable’s roof.
I picked up more plastic figures. “Mary says, ‘I’m having a baby.’ Joseph says, ‘We’re going to Bethlehem.’ Here’s their donkey. ‘Hee haw,’ Donkey says.”
Luke giggled. “Hee haw, hee hee!” Next, he poked a sheep. “Baa.” He waved the angel over his head. “Birdie doll.”
“That’s the angel. She has wings like a bird, though.”
“Angel’s A?” Luke said. He patted her wings.
“Yes, Angel starts with A.”
“Angel’s A,” my brother repeated, louder.
I nodded. “Right, Luke. You’re learning your ABC’s.”
Luke stamped his feet. “Angel’s A!” He threw down the angel, knocking over the sheep.
Hoping to stop the tantrum, I hugged him. “I’m sorry. Please tell me again.”
He pointed at the figures. “Cow’s A ‘Moo’. Sheep’s A ‘Baa’. Angel’s A—”
“Oh! Yes, cows say ‘Moo’. Sheep say ‘Baa’. What does the angel say!” My brother smiled, and picked her up. “Luke, this angel says, ‘There’s a special baby in Bethlehem…’”

Works in Progress

I'm working on a novel set in and around the ocean, with the tentative title, "Salt Water".

I'm also working on a short story, as yet untitled. It has a beginning I'm pleased with, likewise the ending. Wouldn't it be great if I could figure out some logical connection between the two? Presumably an editor would think so.

Hmm. Since moving from A to B isn't working, maybe I should try writing backwards from the conclusion?
