Not Quite The End
Cold-Hearted Vampire
Coming 2017
The 4th book and exciting conclusion of The Blautsauger's of Amber Heights series will be coming out later this year. Cold-Hearted Vampire is Michaela Blautsauger's story.
Michaela Blautsauger might well be the most misunderstood member of the Blautsauger family. Born at a time when the law decreed daughters were the father's property, until they became their husband's chattel, she chafed against such societal restrictions. Willfully, she refused to accept any suitor her father deemed a suitable match. She decided she'd never marry and became determined to be independent and self-reliant.
Almost three hundred years later, her attitude hadn't changed. Still unmarried and despite her father's disapproval, she earned her medical decree. Working as a physician and scientist, for the last fifty years, she's been working on the perfect synthetic blood. A formula that will release Nosferatu vampires from their dependence on human donations.
It's almost finished. All she needs is to find the proper plant fructan. From it she'll extract the liposomes necessary for transporting all the necessary nutrients throughout the vampire circulatory system. She's even learned of the perfect plant.
Her only problem? The ch'ich pak', blood plant, only grows near a sacred cenote in the Yucatan jungle. Deep within the belly of enemy territory, and the Toltecs would love to get their hands on a Blautsauger.
Human Detective Seth Whitehead has his suspicions about the Blautsauger family. Especially the coldly aloof Dr. Michaela Blautsauger. Even as he finds himself drawn to her, he knows she is hiding secrets. Secrets that would help him apprehend the serial killer he's been hunting.
Following her to Mexico turns into a race against time, the Toltecs, and certain death for both of them.

REVIEWS ARE THE LIFE FORCE OF A BOOK
The writing process takes an incredible amount of time. Believe me when I say, this doesn't include the self-doubt that assails every author. No matter the fictional genre, our overwhelming desire is to entertain our readers. Hearing from you is how we know if we've accomplished this goal. We learn from our reviews.
But to do that - we need to find readers. The days of large publishing houses that provide advances, advertising, and an army of reviewers are ending. Brick and Mortar stores are going out of business as more and more readers buy from the internet. Some publishers, like mine, only sell online.
In an effort to get our books noticed, authors now depend on their readers. YOU are the most important cog in the wheel. YOU provide the necessary feedback. Every word you write about one of our books provides priceless advertising.
Of course, we hope for positive appraisals but more than that we want honest ones. A few sentences suffice.Your opinion matters.
Every review helps connect the author with potential readers. Buyers do check the comments on Amazon and Goodreads before they make their purchases. Your reviews not only help provide name recognition but helps us reach our target audience.
So, please, leave reviews when you read a book. I promise, you'll earn the author's undying gratitude.

Grand Falls
The Falls on Shoal Creek - Joplin MO
Moving back to the stomping grounds of my youth has sent me on an odyssey of sorts. This weekend I took a visiting friend to see Shoal Creek. Grand Falls (locally known as simply The Falls) is located in the southern part of Joplin.
It is the largest, continuously flowing natural waterfall in Missouri, Grand Falls plunges 25 feet to a solid ledge before flowing further south.
The cascading waters provided the energy for Joplin's first electrical power plant. Constructed on the site in the 1890's, in 1903 Grand Falls Park was further developed and featured a theater, boat houses, a German Village, and a dance pavilion. Missouri Pacific had established a rail spur to the power plant and offered hourly round trip tickets to Joplin's best known tourist attraction.
Today you can only see the remains of one of the power plant's cement walls. It stands abandoned on the west side of the waterfall. The dam itself still stands and spans the entire width of the river right above the natural falls.
Driving along Shoal Creek reminded me of the hours I spent playing, swimming, and floating in its waters. It brought back to mind some very good memories from my childhood.
I can remember my parents waking my siblings and me up early on a weekend morning. We'd pile sleepily into the car and off we'd head to the river. As the sun rose, burning the strands of lacy fog off the water, we kids explored the rocky, gravel bar. We overturned rocks looking for crawdads, skipped stones, and waded while my parents fixed breakfast over a campfire.
Mouthwatering scents of bacon and eggs would drift to us over the more pungent scents of rive, fish, and vegetation.
More memories. Floating down the river while fishing with my dad. Once my dad generously attached his favorite lure, a red and white Lazy Ike, to my rod and reel. I remember feeling so honored. I don't think I had it on my line for an hour before casting right as our little, flat-bottomed, aluminum boat entered a set of rapids. Of course the lure caught on an overhanging tree limb. Dad frantically tried to row against the current while trying to jerk my line free.
Let's just say it was one of the only times I ever heard my dad cuss and I bought him a red and white Lazy Ike every holiday for many years after.
I remembered different times the river flooded, swollen beyond belief. Getting little peeks of 'the castle' near Redings Mill when the leaves were off the trees. Going on picnics along Shoal Creek with my first real boyfriend. Watching Fourth of July fireworks at McClelland Park, located on the hillside above the falls.
I laughingly rambled on about these things to my friend. Pointed out different areas as I recalled little anecdotes and she listened patiently.
And I realized how glad I was to see people there swimming, fishing, and walking along the river. I was happy the area was still popular. Still in use. That more memories were being made.

Vampire in the Scrying Glass
Release date October 31, 2014.
You've been warned...
Morgan quickly lunged forward, and pressed the stake firmly over his heart. “You are despicable.”
“Necessary. Especially for someone as puny as you.” With ease Rafe flipped the piece of sharpened wood out of her fingers, twirled it around a couple of times, and then handed it back with a small flourish.
This time reprisal came more quickly as a spell came to her. She hoped that one day it would come automatically. “Let this man feel my slap. Not to harm, just a tap. Let him feel a touch of fear, to know he cannot domineer.”
For a second the words hung in the air and then Rafe’s eyes widened as his head jerked to the side. The faint lines of a palm print reddened his left cheek.
“You little devil,” he rubbed the side of his face before pushing her on the shoulder with the flat of his hand. He shoved hard enough to force her back a step. “If you’re going to slap at me, by god, you better have the balls to come at me personally.”
“Oh, yeah?” Morgan thrust both hands against his chest and shoved with all her might. It shook her when he didn’t budge an inch, but she managed to keep up her air of bravado. “What’s the matter? Don’t you like the fact I’m not weak and powerless?” Tossing back her head, she challenged, “I don’t need magic to take you on, but it would be wise for you to remember it’s always there.”
He thwarted any chance of escape or the ability to get in the last word by twisting his hand into her hair.
He pulled hard enough she gasped.
“So take me on,” he dared.

The writing process of R.E.Mullins

THE WRITING PROCESS OF R.E. MULLINS
When asked, I quickly jumped at the chance to take part in a blog series involving an author’s writing process. I was pleased to be included. It wasn’t until later I found myself asking. Do I even have a writing process?
What have I done and what am I working on?
Well, I’ve published one book, another is in production to be out later this year, and I’m working on the third. Surely, there is something I can contribute…
How does my work differ from others in its genre?
Right now, I’m writing a series of vampire/romances. The Blautsaugers (old Bavarian word for bloodsucker) live in Amber Heights, Missouri along the Amber River. They belong to the strongly regulated Nosferatu sect of vampires.
My vampires are essentially humans with an extra chromosome or two. These additional links on their DNA chain gives them the vamp characteristics of blood diet, longer life, ability to mesmerize humans, extra strength, speed, and healing capabilities. Due to their extended life span, they mature very slowly emotionally. The vampire’s tween years start in their forties and last until they reach their majority at one hundred years of age.
Just as humans have devised ways of functionally staying up all night, my vampires have the capability to work during the day. Using proper precautions, they can normally move about in sunlight. (Didn’t you know sunscreen and sunglasses were originally invented by vampires?)
Family dynamics and affairs of the heart remain the same whether human or vampire. Things are never easy and the heart has a mind of its own.
Why do I write what I do?
I’ve always been an avid reader. While working in a medical laboratory, a storyline presented itself. What would happen if a phlebotomist were turned into a vampire? She could use the lab as a means for getting blood…I sat down and began writing. A co-worker would read a chapter at a time and constantly encouraged me. By the time I stopped, I’d written a 93,000-word document. I gave several friends thick notebooks filled with the copied pages, got their feedback, and then didn’t know what to do.
I searched out the local chapter of Romance writers and attended a meeting to ask that very question. Instead, I found myself met with frank disbelief. What did I mean I wrote an entire novel without prior experience in short stories, magazine articles, or writing contests? I left feeling I’d behaved presumptuously…I hadn’t paid my dues.
The manuscript, shoved into a cardboard box, gathered some dust before I discovered the Wild Rose Press. I hesitantly followed the submission guidelines, got a call from one of their editors, and it was published. I’m leaving out how I had to rewrite it twice during the heavy editing process.
That’s the story of how IT’S A WONDERFUL UNDEAD LIFE was written.
BLURB
It's been a rough couple of years for Cailey Kantor. Facing her first Christmas alone and bad financial news, she prays for an angel to fix her problems. Instead, a sadistic, sociopathic vampire, with the goal of starting a vampire war, attacks her and forces her to drink blood stolen from the Nosferatu Gabriel Blautsauger.
Gabe must complete Cailey's turning or she will die. In doing so he risks losing his yet unfound soulmate. But something about the lovely mortal speaks to his heart. Once her transformation is complete, he and Cailey find themselves embroiled in a battle that could cost them all they hold dear.
Faced with lies, abduction, and betrayal Cailey wonders if the vampire she is falling fangs over heart for is in it for love or if she's just a means to stop a war.

How does my writing process work?
First it is essential to have a furry writing companion. My dog is always ready to listen to me read him different versions of my rough drafts. He's always attentive and never judgmental. When the words are flowing, I can sit at the computer all day long. When the words stop, I take my dog for a walk, flop onto the couch and stare into space, whine to anyone who will listen, and live in my head until the voices come back.
I’ve tried outlines, timelines, and other techniques but sometimes my characters refuse to bend to my will. They are certainly a headstrong bunch. For instance, I’d no idea a demon was going to pop up in my second book. VAMPIRE IN THE SCRYING GLASS is currently going through preliminary galley at Wild Rose Press. It is due out later this year.
Here’s a sneak peek at the blurb:
From the first moment he laid eyes on her, Rafe Blautsauger loved Morgan Maguire. Yet the lovely mortal must never know as love between human and vampire is strictly forbidden by the Nosferatu council. Unable to stop, he keeps to the shadows while protectively watching over her. Soon he begins to suspect she has secrets of her own. Hailing from a long line of witches, Morgan turned from her magic when, as a child, her first casting went horribly awry. Now a sequence of events set in place before her birth sends her scrambling to regain her power. Vampires and a set of malevolently glowing red eyes hunt her.
