It's the kind of day that I felt compelled to bust out "Unicorn" by Tyrannosaurus Rex, Marc Bolan's acid-folk band before he went glam-rock. One of the elfiest albums of all time, and one of the favorites of my youth.

Most family cold germs now fought into sullen truce. Trying to get some work done. Children haven't been out of pajamas for days, it seems. Chaos. Oh well. It IS the holidays...

We had an absolutely splendid afternoon yesterday, sitting on my brother and sister-in-law's front porch in gorgeously unseasonal sunshine watching all the cousins chasing soap bubbles. Doesn't get any better on the last day of autumn. Happy Winter, y'all! Hope it's at least warm inside where you are.

We went to AVATAR and enjoyed it, but I can't help wondering why something with such obvious debts to Ursula Le Guin's THE WORD FOR WORLD IS FOREST doesn't mention that (and probably isn't paying her royalties, either.) Am I wrong? Did I miss something?

I'm feeling very squished by the holiday season impacting on an overabundance of work. A bit short on holiday spirit. I will go cheer myself by telling the dogs long jokes and then pretending to forget the punchline. It drives them CRAZY.

Hellish last two days with almost-teenager and major homework malfeasance (12-week project discovered untouched for eight weeks, first major part now due.) Tears, excuses, rage, self-flagellation. The kid didn't handle it too well, either.

A good friend of ours was stabbed in a night club where he went to see Tiësto, the brilliant musician and producer. (Our friend is okay, fortunately.) He (friend) is mildly famous, and said the worst thing about the incident is that when the story showed up in the news the reporters didn't understand the name Tiësto and so all the articles said he was shanked at a Kiss concert.
