Skyline 2010
When Skyline first came out, I'd missed it in theaters. I was bummed out too, but I was determined to see it. I purchased it on dvd and fell in freaking LOVE... until the end. I was so freaking ANGRY at the way they left things. Especially since I didn't know if a second movie would be made to explain things! I thought it both the best and worst of alien invasion movies. Let me share why... #element-c401804b-3771-43d4-a1ac-54bfc9e09506 .waddons-blog-image.hideImage { display: none;}
Jarrod and Elaine are visiting a friend in L.A. Since I'm a CA native, I'm wondering why they had to co to Los Angeles too, but I digress. Their friend, who's big time these days, wants Jarrod to move to L.A. and work with him; he wants them to become rich and famous together. Jarrod thinks it could be both fun and unbelievable, but Elaine has news for him that could change everything.And then in the wee hours of the morning, lights fall to earth. These lights draw people from their homes like the bug zappers catch mosquitos and moths. But it's so much more. And then the true invasion takes off.
Skyline is a fast paced movie that keeps you on your toes, because it's the end of the world an you want the humans to win! It's fantastic! From the special FX to the acting, it all feels pretty darned good, almost real. The aliens are mesmerizing and I'm not saying that because of their alluring blue lights. I'm saying it's freaky and monstrous. Then just when you think there's no way out, Jarrod shows us a way.
I liked Skyline, back in 2010 and in 2018 when I rewatched it with the intention of reviewing it. Especially since there's a part two now: Beyond Skyline. Skyline is one of those movies that was a blockbuster, but people were let down by the ending. Just know that if you watch Skyline and then Beyond Skyline right behind it, you will receive the answers you seek. Jus know that the second movie is nowhere near as amazing as the first.
I'm an Eric Falbour fan so I'm endorsing this one. I'm also moving on to the next movie, but you can find Skyline in iTunes for around $10. Check it out! Skyline

Children of Blood and Bone
A Novel by Tomi Adeyemi
& Narrated by Bahni Turpin
When I first saw this book's cover, back in late February, I knew I wanted a copy. It made me think of Storm from X-Men. Then when I read the blurb and heard the name Orïsha, I thought of Leigh Bardugo, but
Tomi Adeyemi
has created a world of her own. Magic, epic battles and even a little romance makes Children of Blood and Bone a huge read! #element-89158540-3ebf-4bdd-a4ef-3e911f3b4d44 .waddons-blog-image.hideImage { display: none;}
Okay, so the Maji are magical people. They are powerful, making them a formidable foe. But the ruthless king of Orïsha decides he's tired of their power and abilities, so he sets out to commit genocide, destroying magic and all who wield it. But there's hope.
The bravery of a princess and young Orïsha girl and her brother set a series of events in motion that could possibly bring magic back to the Maji and stop a king in his tracks. But there's betrayal around every corner...
Children of Blood and Bone is a good story. The writing was elegant and flowed nicely, but MAN did it take forever! kept thinking the book would never end. The magic was pretty cool, but it didn't seem to serve the users very well. It took a great deal from them. Then there was the blood magic, which could literally kill you if you weren't careful. If you were one of the Tiders or Burners, you were okay. If you were a Reaper, you couldn't last long and if you weren't super strong, your creations were easily destroyed. I thought that rather sucked.
Children of Blood and Bone was adventurous and well thought out, it just took too long to bring the ending about. And then there's another one to come! Ugh... I just don't know. For all the hoopla that was thrown over the book, I really expected more. But hey, it's still better than my novel. Cause I haven't written one yet! LOL. I'm off to the next read. Cheers!

The Pisces
New novel by Melissa Broder
I know, you're probably thinking- Alyssa's read a romance novel? Again? It's so totally not me, but when it's free and with a deadline I can handle, I'll try anything. This was one of those books that had me freaked out over the cover alone- it's gorgeous. But deep down, this book is... Let's just talk about The Pisces by
Melissa Broder
. #element-304962c8-c022-4750-99d1-7e68449ab577 .waddons-blog-image.hideImage { display: none;}
This book is porn. Straight up gross. Some of the things this character does and thinks and says are completely juvenile and nasty and disgusting and sex. Sex. SEX! That's all it's filled with! I forced myself to stomach as much as I could, up to chapter 21 before I realized I couldn't turn another page!
The Pisces is about Lucy, A woman who's in the midst of self-created chaos. She's supposed to be completing her dissertation on Sappho, but it's taken years and she's still not finished with it. She's dumped her boyfriend, who came back to her for a one-off, but she becomes violent when she finds he's seeing someone else.
She's selfish, lazy and what's a word worse than sarcastic? I don't know, contemptuous? I'm sure there's another but I don't use anything foul. Anyway, she's in such a bad way, her sister allows her to stay at her lake home, in turn she care for her diabetic dog. That's where she meets and falls a man is this nothing as he should be!
Let me begin by saying this book makes me angry to a certain degree. There are so many indie authors who get looked over because they didn't fall under the umbrella of some major publishing group/company. They write great fiction, non-fiction, etc. but can't get enough marketing and such behind them to go far. Where as this book has probably sold thousands upon thousands of copies and it's complete literary garbage!
Don't get me wrong, the writing is great! I love the voice but the voice comes from an imaginary person I could never get to know! She's terrible and the story is awful! It's just cursing, sex, totally gross conversations and so much more! I was so shocked by what takes place that I didn't even finish the book. I couldn't. It's distasteful- nothing I'd want to read or keep in my library. I'll be donating this one.
Cheers!

Beasts, Brutes & Abominations
A collection by Tom. G. H. Adams
Have you ever read a book so surreal, it made you pull out your bible to do research? Have you read a book that made you believe Purgatory is a place where you actually can make some sort of amends before passing on to the next life? Is there a next life?
That's what Beasts, Brutes & Abominations, by Tom. G. H. Adams , is all about... #element-de424844-09a0-48b6-af6b-1f51fcfb48b6 .waddons-blog-image.hideImage { display: none;}
Page after page, filled with classical form and surreal images, Beasts, Brutes and Abominations was one heck of a read. I have to admit, there were times where I wanted to put the book down. Not due to disinterest, but because I wasn’t sure where the story was going. Also, I read it during my 2017 Thanksgiving holiday and wanted to be with family more than read at the time.
Still, I found the stories of wonder and curiosity. For a time, I even had to pull out my bible [Baphoment’s Beasts], to check was I was understanding. The stories are off, strange and thought-provoking from time to time, but there’s humor and a bit of sadness as well. Every one of them contain death of some sort. And if the death hasn’t already occurred, then it’s either happening or about to- just giving you the head’s up.
There are other times where the story may be but a few paragraphs; I really didn’t get that.
My favorite chapter was The Creche. A story about a man who's stepped into what is believed to be Purgatory. All he sees, the trials he endures and the ending were perfect. I loved it all- the characters, monsters and his redemption from a lustful previous life. It's one to make you think.
The book is nicely written with a depth that strikes your core thoughts and maybe a few beliefs. Definitely worth reading if you’re in to classical. Adams writes with a style that’s not so much unique but with a voice that captured my interests. He made me want to know the ending.
So check out Tom G. H. Adams and his book Beasts, Brutes and Abominations while I move on to the next read.
Cheers!

Alan C. Fox and Eefje Kuijl's: Benji & The 24-Pound Banana Squash
Children's Book Review
As you know, I totally adore children's books. Benji & the 24 Pound Banana Squash is one of them. Sweet, simple and filled with beautiful illustrations that just make you smile, this book is absolutely perfect for the wee-ones!
Benji is a boy who loves his veggies. He loves them so much, he saved seeds from the previous squash meal and decided he'd grow his own. The story tells of a boy with pure determination, patience and joy for creating something of his own.
I think the photos made the story for me. There's not much to the wording, but you don't really need it. First off, it's a children's book! LOL The pictures do the work for you. Fox and Kuijl did a great job and I think any person who picks this book up will enjoy it. Like I said, the pics alone just make you smile!
Benji & the 24 Pound Banana Squash releases October 2017, through Clavis Publishing. Be sure to grab a copy for you little one. Read it to them, while I move on to the next read. Cheers!

Temple
*Movie Review
When you are repeatedly warned to not go someplace, maybe you shoudln't go. When someone tells you that a person left said place, only to return with their eyeballs in the hands... you shoudln't go. This is the story of three American tourists who were continually warned, and didn't freaking listen... When Chris, James and Kate take a trip to Japan, they're looking for the experience of a lifetme. Kate, who loves photography, finds a photo in a book of folklore and decides they all have to go. When they ask about the location, they're repeatedly told, "Not a good place", "Find another temple" and worse! But do they listen? Typical Americans.
They go.
They are told to return from the temple before dark, but end up staying the night at the temple, due to ... You'll have to watch. Just know that's when the fun begins. They make every mistake you can imagine from the moment they enter the village. Stupid, stupid, stupid people!
I found this not to be a horror movie, but a horrific movie. For me, it was 78 minutes of warning and reason, then let down. I think I even died a little. Temple, 2017

Terry Treetop & the Lost Egg
A Children's eBook
Written by Tale Carmi
Terry is a boy always on a mission. In this book, he finds an egg and does his best to figure out where it belongs. Terry Treetop and the Lost Egg by
Tali Carmi
is short, adventurous and cute for the little ones. #element-fba2a924-3448-465f-ad08-8f0dd6dbfb07 .waddons-blog-image.hideImage { display: none;}
Terry Treetop and the Lost Egg is a story told in rhyme about a boy who went camping. He discovers an egg on the ground and is determined to find its home. The book is sweet, because the book also teaches. Each animal he comes across, he asks if the egg belongs to them. They in turn tell him either yes or no before explaining how their children come into the world. It's really cute.
This book is for children ages 3-8. The illustrations are colorful and bright, sure to hold attention and the rhyming is cute and something the kids will catch on to. the only thing I didn't like is that the book is very short; there's a ton of advertising before the story even begins. It's such a bummer. The book says it's about forty-three pages long, but it's really around ten.
So check out Terry Treetop's book series, especially this one: The Lost Egg. I'm on to the next read.
Cheers!

Keep the Gaslight Burning
Here's a short movie that carries a lot of bang! It's haunting and carries a story that will have you pretty surprised. All you have to do is Keep the Gaslight Burning! #element-5786cd87-3cf6-4137-a287-3ba67ff41212 .waddons-blog-image.hideImage { display: none;}
Reviewing 18-minute movies can be difficult, but this one was made easy by an excellent story. Keep the Gaslight Burning is about ghosts, a task and getting yours in the end. It reminded me of an old episode of The Night Gallery: The Cemetery. It was haunting and fabulous back then and this short movie carried a similar affect.
The story is about a young woman who goes to work for a woman who is plagued with a curse. She constantly hires a companion, but they leave once she presents them a task that sounds absurd. The new hire's major duty is to continuously place a penny into the machine that keeps the gaslight burning in her boss's bedroom.Keep the Gaslight Burning is one of those quick movies that you like. Though there was a predictable ending, it was entertaining. Also, it helped that Markie Post was the main character. She’s excellent and all this movie did was continue to show how she still shines.
Many do not enjoy short movies, but this one carries a lot of punch. Keep the Gaslight Burning released in October of 2017.

The Girl With the Green Tinted Hair
by Gavin Whyte
Magical, mystical and mysterious, The Girl With the Green Tinted Hair, by
Gavin Whyte
, is a poetic story. It's written in a way that doesn't feel like a children's book. No, I don't think it is, but it is sweet. It's quite lovely... just not for kids.
The Girl With The Green Tinted Hair is about growing up. It shares innocence and innocent adoration. It's also about choices, life and growing up to believe and if we should believe. It's a short story of magically quiet times and how we can dive deep within ourselves- like I used to when I was younger. It's a gift I'd love to regain!
I don't know if it's a story I'd have read my son to sleep with (listed under children's book on Amazon), but I believe that if he read it today, he'd not like it. It was a bit repetitive and the coming and going of the seasons would have lost him. To me, it was like reading poetry. It was segmented, using particular times in the boys life, where questions were necessary and he needed a comfortable, reliable person to lean on. I can remember those times too.
The creepy part is that the story begins with a boy's infatuation with a girl. They become friends and he loves her. But when he returns, the girl is a young woman. She still loves him and he loves her- more than before. IS that not weird? Then when he finally returns, she's an old woman- still in love! What the wha? It felt creepy and pedo-ish, making me think something's terribly wrong.
Filled with imagery and song, The Girl With the Green Tinted Hair is a book I don't know if many would find appreciation. It's feels wrong, though written beautifully. You may or may not want to check it out, but I'm moving on to the next read!
Cheers!

Sniffer, The Dog Who Loved To Sniff
Children's Illustrated eBook by Pippa Pennington
Sniffer, by Pippa Pennington is the story of a puppy who allows his nose to dictate where he goes and what he does. Reminded me of my blend of a basset and beagle. Sniffer leaves his yard and goes on a journey that gets him into a bit of trouble.
Filled with small, but cute illustrations and a repetitive story that will hold the minds of 3-7 year old, Sniffer is a bedtime read. It's fast and you can ad lib to make the little one laugh. Especially when his exclamations of "Pooh!" actually leads him to a pile of poo!
Check out Sniffer, The Dog Who Loved To Sniff as I move on to the next read. Cheers!

Sniffer leaves his yard and goes on a journey that gets him into a bit of trouble.Filled with small, but cute illustrations and a repetitive story that will hold the minds of 3-7 year old, Sniffer is a bedtime read. It's fast and you can ad lib to make the little one laugh. Especially when his exclamations of "Pooh!" actually leads him to a pile of poo!
Check out Sniffer, The Dog Who Loved To Sniff as I move on to the next read. Cheers!
