Cassandra Hallman & J.L. Beck
(A Broken Heroes Novel #2)

She needed protection from my family…I needed protection from her heart…
She was my ex-best friends little sister. Shy, gorgeous as hell and did I mention completely off limits.Well that is until she lands on my doorstep begging me for protection from my brother. She has no idea the kind of world she’s walked into, or that I’m no better of a man then the one searching for her.But when she offers me her v-card the last thing she has in exchange for protection I cant deny such a tempting offer. She’s everything I want, and nothing I can have. When my brother finds out she’s under my protection, that I’ve been hiding her under his nose this whole time he gives me an ultimatum…Marry her, or kill her…and since there’s no way in hell I’m going to let him kill her I decide to make her mine..forever.**This is book two in the series but it can be read as a complete standalone. It contains NO-CLIFFHANGERS, NO CHEATING, and has a HEA. It is a dark mafia/crime romance and contains subject matter not suitable for all readers.**
Goodreads / AmazonEXCERPT:I feel him pull away slowly, his lips feather light against mine until he’s completely gone. And like a flower misses the sun’s warmth at night, I miss Damon’s lips against mine. His warmth seeps into me, showing me a side of him I’d been certain didn’t exist. My brown eyes bleed into his sleepy, coffee-colored ones. His gaze never wavers from mine, and I watch as something swims in his eyes—an unreadable emotion. Deep down, I know I’ll be okay. I don’t know how I know this or why, but I can feel it in Damon’s gaze—like a protective blanket coating my body. The moment ends, and with little effort, Damon pulls me to his chest. I rest my head against his warm skin. The sound of his heart beating fills my ears, its steady rhythm calming me. As his hands glide down my arms, goosebumps cover my skin. After today, I was certain I’d never let him touch me again, but now I’m not so sure. His hold on me tightens, instinctually, as if he wants to make sure I don’t go anywhere. Shock twists deep inside me as he brings his other hand to my head, burying his thick fingers into my brown mane. When he starts playing with the natural curls at the ends of each strand, I nearly moan. His touch relaxes me, soothes me. I don’t want this moment between us to end.“Don’t be scared. You have no reason to be scared of me.” He licks his lips before smiling at me. “I’m a bastard, a killer, and the worst man to be in your presence, but I’ll do whatever I can to protect you,” he whispers before his hand stills in my hair, cradling my head against his body.

BOOK BLITZ: For Fox Sake by Emma Dean #GIVEAWAY

For Fox Sake
Emma Dean
(The Chaos of Foxes #1)
Publication date: August 28th 2018
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance
What do you do when you’re outfoxed?Kenzie is the only non-witch in her family. When her younger sister’s powers end up stripped from her, Kenzie promises to find a way to get them back – after all she has a very specific set of skills after trying to make up for not having any powers of her own. When Kenzie finds something to restore her sister’s powers, the only way to obtain it is to steal it from the Alpha of the West Coast Pride. Right as she’s about to succeed three sexy foxes snatch it right from under her nose. Will Kenzie be able to take it from them before they steal her heart as well?
Goodreads / Amazon EXCERPT:There they were. The one at the center – he was tall, but not the tallest. His burgundy hair looked like a jewel among all the green. Hunter. He tilted his head as he studied her. She could tell he was trying to get her scent. Then he pulled his hand out of his pocket and Kenzie clenched her hands into fists when she saw the potion.“Would you take off your charm?” Hunter asked. “It’s…strange not to know your scent.”Kenzie looked to the black-haired one, Ash. The memory of his arm around her waist made her cheeks heat and she hated herself for how badly she wanted him to do it again. Ash crossed his arms over his broad chest and his blue eyes sparkled when he gave her a mischievous grin, like he knew exactly what she was thinking. But these foxes looked more like really fit human men than the larger predator shifters did in their human forms. They were still gorgeous, but not massive like Samuel was. She wondered for a brief moment if the foxes had that brutal strength shifters whispered about. Like the Fates had taken pity on their size and made them strong enough to take on a wolf – sometimes stronger. Then Finnick ran his hand through his flame-red hair and walked forward. Kenzie knew she should keep her eyes on Hunter, but this one had been the first she’d seen. Something about his charm had an edge to it, but the way he grinned at her – it was infectious and she desperately wanted to know the joke.“Did you know foxes can feed on chaos and pain?” Finnick asked. His voice was serious despite the expression on his face and it made Kenzie jump, like he’d scared her. “I can taste your pain.”“What do you want from me?” she demanded, watching the way Finnick circled her.“We want to know what you smell like first,” Hunter told her. “Maybe I’ll give you the potion for it.”She narrowed her eyes at him. “What do you want with my scent?” She’d kept it a secret for years. No one knew her true scent. It was her only weapon against the shifters.“To know you,” Ash told her, stepping forward to circle in the other direction.Hunter smiled and tucked his hands back in his pockets. “Take off the charm, and I’ll tell you why we’re here. Maybe…maybe we can make a deal.”Hope flared for a brief moment before she crushed it. These were foxes. Stereotypes were true for a reason. Most avoided foxes because they were impossible to trust. But…if he’d give her the potion? What was she willing to do for it – for Selene?Slowly she reached up. Each earring was enchanted to help her exist in the paranormal world. Two were for scent, another to mask the sound of her heart and her breathing, and then the fourth was to enhance her senses like sight and smell. The last was to give her strength when she activated it – enough strength to take down a bear shifter if she needed to, but only for an hour.Without powers she was more vulnerable than she would ever admit. Without her charms she was defenseless against any paranormal being. Her hands shook as she removed them all. No need to give away which charms did what.Once they all twinkled in the palm of her hand she glared at Hunter and put them in her dress pocket, daring him to get closer so she could snatch the potion from his pocket. Her auditory charm still in her ear helped her hear the sound of the underbrush being crushed by Ash’s foot as he came up behind her. His hand brushed down her arm and she shivered.Kenzie knew they could hear the beating of her heart now, they could hear her breathing quicken as she felt Ash brush his nose against the back of her neck. She blushed, knowing they could smell how nervous she was – how much she liked the way he touched her.Clenching and unclenching her hands she focused on her breathing – control. That’s what she’d learned among the humans. Perfect, unwavering control. She’d spent too many years relying on her charms. Kenzie needed to practice more.Ash jerked back from her and growled. “Mate,” he hissed, baring his teeth.Kenzie bared hers right back. “No,” she snapped. “I am not.”Finnick’s eyebrows rose in surprise. “She’s your mate? How fun. Let me smell.”Kenzie wanted them to get the fuck away from her, but she wanted the potion more. How close would Hunter get?Ash got in her face, his blazing blue eyes searching hers. “Whether you like it or not, you’re mine.”“I can deny the bond.”He grinned then, slow and full of fire. “Sure, but only if you mean it.”A flicker of doubt ran through her.And then Finnick’s hand on her bare shoulder had her whipping around to smack his hand away. “Mate,” he said, grinning like he’d won the lottery. “You can hit me if you want. I like it rough.”“I am not your mate. Even if I wanted to, I can’t be both of yours.”Hunter strolled right up to her then, the toes of his boots brushing the tips of her Converse. He looked down at her, so close she had to crane her neck up to look into those strange, glittering brown eyes of his. When the sun hit them they glittered like liquid gold.Despite her common sense she was entranced by him, by the strange musky scent he exuded with its hint of sharp citrus. “Foxes can mate in triads like the felines,” Hunter murmured, examining the line of her jaw like he thought it might hold the answer to whatever question he had. “It’s entirely possible, especially considering how close the three of us are.”Then his hand shot out, so quick she barely even registered the motion until his large, calloused hand wrapped around her throat. Her heart pounded so hard it was difficult to breathe, but when she had a second to evaluate the situation she realized his touch was so gentle it was barely there. His thumb brushed along the column of her throat and damn her, she shivered again, eyes closing as the touch filled her with a strange electricity.Kenzie’s eyes shot open when Hunter bent to run his nose from the top of her shoulder all the way to her throat until he was just under her jaw. His lips against her bare ear felt…delicious.“The taste of your pain is intoxicating, mate,” Hunter murmured against her skin. His words felt like a confession.

He’ll fight not only for her throne but for her love. But with the royal divide between them pulling her further away from his grasp, can he finally win his heart’s desire?
Goodreads / AmazonEXCERPT:“I remember the first time I saw you.”Davina chuckled. “I’m sure I was screeching in the halls of the palace in Zhar. My mother hated that I’d been so wild.”A rumble from Alexios’ chest vibrated against her ear, and she found comfort in the sound.“No. The first time I laid eyes on you, you were scurrying in the woods, tripping over yourself carrying food, which I’m sure you’d stolen from the kitchens. You were heading to a baby foal you’d discovered under some bramble.”Davina took a moment to enjoy his face. Lines fanned the corners of his eyes while his dark lashes stretched away from them. He smiled, and his lone dimple made its tiny dent. Her mouth parted. It had been a long time since she’d seen him smile like this. His joy spread through her.“I remember the foal. I named him Laeb,” she chuckled. “I knew someone was there! I’d stopped to look, but I couldn’t see anyone. It was you?”“Yes. I was in the woods taking some time to myself. The barracks were loud, and I still struggled with my transition. It was my first time seeing the Queen’s daughter, but I knew instantly who you were.” He buried his hand into her hair at her nape, his thumb lightly caressing her scalp.“I saw you and knew then that this world was not so bleak. That there is light and beauty capable of vanquishing any darkness. And that a beautiful, rambunctious, young girl who sneaked food for an injured foal, would always have a piece of my heart.”

EXCERPT:Leaving his study and heading towards the back of the house, I took one last, lingering look inside my fully equipped art studio next to his office. It was the one side of me that he’d never tried to tame. I’d inherited my mother’s artistic abilities, and here was the only place in the house that gave me some sense of self, that put me back in touch with the girl I used to be. The girl I longed to be again, if that were even possible. Moving into the centre of the room, I ran my fingers over my last canvas creation, which stood on the wooden easel, and sighed. He’d asked me to paint my vision of our love after nearly ten years together. He wanted to hang it in his study for our upcoming anniversary in December. To the casual observer I’d painstakingly created the most stunning galaxy, implying our love was infinite. Only I knew the meaning behind the apparent beauty of my work. The black background signified my fear and hatred. The dark blues were my depression. The reds my anger. And the myriad of sparkling stars that some would see as incandescent diamonds, wasn’t the symbolisation of the infinity of our love, but the infinity of torture stretching before me. I was alone, insignificant in my surroundings of a vast nothingness that would consume me and my future if I stayed. But I wasn’t staying. Not even for another minute.

Genres: Fantasy, New Adult

But nothing is free, and actions have consequences. When Keira’s team returns to their world, vampires attack a demon stronghold. No one knows who to blame, but the fragile peace has been rocked. And it’s about to get worse—Lucifer has escaped Hell.

Goodreads / AmazonEXCERPT:Kiera’s point of view
“Would you like something to drink?” a man with a long beard asked, wiping a glass with a white towel. The bartender was dressed in all black and wore a black metal bracelet that reminded me of a Fitbit. Not a human.Ezekiel had told me about those bracelets. The vampires who wore them owed a debt to a master, most of the time to the master who had created them. If he tried to escape, the master only needed to push a button on a device and the vampire would incinerate.“No, thank you. I’m waiting for someone.” I waved a hand and flashed a glance at the other three bartenders. Two of them were female vampires, both wearing a black metal bracelet.I was just about to turn when he leaned closer.“I’ve never seen you here. Is this your first time?”Do I tell him the truth? He’s probably been working here for a long time. Best not to lie.“Yeah, my first time. I’m here to meet someone.”“Would you like to leave?”I blinked in confusion, and something in my stomach knotted. “Why would I leave? I already told you, I’m meeting someone.”He placed down the glass, flung the towel over his shoulder, and leaned forward to show me his sharp canines. “You’ve come to the wrong club, lady.”My skin tingled. A warning. “No. I know where I am. Perhaps you need to keep your opinions to yourself. Do I need to speak to the manager?” I made a point to look at his bracelet, which flashed a tiny red light. He glared. “My master won’t care. I know what organization you work for. Do you know what we do with your kind?”Lie. Deny it.I crossed my legs so I could easily access the weapon tucked inside my boot. “I have no idea what you’re talking about. Do you think I would come alone and start something to get myself killed? You’re a fool. I have no idea who you think I am, but I am just a lowly Nephilim.” Who will kick your ass if you touch me.“Perhaps. Then can you explain the crowd standing behind you with death written across their faces?”I flicked my gaze to the mirror behind the bar. It was now packed with supernatural beings.Shit. This is a set-up. I’m going to kill that bitch witch.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:Finn was working his shift, watching Grace from a side street near her house in Hollywood Hills. I went home to shower and eat something. Four hours later, he called.“Grace’s going somewhere… she’s been dolling up for the last hour,” he said. “You can see that close?”I was wondering what else he’d seen.“If only you knew,” he chuckled. “The glass butterfly roof makes it easy viewing with the drone.”“Do you want to follow her? If not, I can do it. I have no plans tonight,” I said.“I need the money, boss. How about we do it together? I need to install the tracker app on her phone, and maybe you can distract her.”I agreed. I’d wanted to meet this girl since taking the case. She hadn’t gone anywhere outside her usual radius ever since she returned home.I was getting into the car when Finn sent me a text.Finn: Grace is on the move, I need to follow her.Me: Where is she?Finn: She started up that little fireplug of hers and got on I-10 toward Santa Monica. I’m on her tail.Me: I’m switching to the hands-free mode. I’m driving.Finn: Oh, forgot about that. I am switching modes too.Ten minutes later, I was right behind her.Me: I’m on the highway. I think I see the Bug.The VW Bug was like a toy, changing lanes seamlessly as if it were in a video game. If I got too close, Grace might see my car. It’s a little flashy for a private investigator, but it was perfect for driving in Southern California. I didn’t want to be spotted, but I wasn’t about to let her lose me. It wouldn’t be unusual for me to drive toward the beach at the same time as she, would it?Grace pulled up in front of a nondescript little piano bar near the beach. The electric blue neon sign flashed its name, Place Pour Steaks. I got there just in time to see her hand keys to the valet and saunter in; her hips swaying from side to side.Me? I was playing catch-up all the way. I screeched to a stop in front of the other parking attendant and tossed him the keys.My 1962 Skylark convertible, though a little beat up, was my pride and joy.“See this fifty-dollar bill? It’s yours when I leave if you park it over there.”I pointed at a slot that said Reserved.Once inside, I took two minutes to find Grace. She’d scrambled up to the bar as if the house was on fire. I looked around for the usual suspects—girls down for whatever and putting in the effort to get noticed. I wanted to meander over to Grace right away, but I couldn’t look as if I was stalking her.She sat on the stool at the far end of the bar, her right leg elongated, the ball of the foot anchoring her in place, while she rested her left on the stool’s spindle, watching, scoping, and evaluating. It looked as though she had gone to the same school of surveillance as me.Grace’s platinum blonde hair was in loose waves around her shoulders. She was wearing a style rich girls do well, casual, edgy, and expensive. An off-the-shoulder soft leather jacket, accented with zippers and buckles, was one breath away from slipping down her arms, even though it wrapped her upper body like a glove. A black lace strap appeared to be an afterthought. I wanted to lick her skin all along the edges of the lace and up into her collarbone.Grace wore the RL signature crisp, white, linen shorts. She encased those long legs in a pair of black over-the-knee boots by MB, an Italian leather shoe designer. As an investigator, I notice these details. If I didn’t have a professional agenda regarding Grace Fleming, I’d know every inch of leg inside the boots. I leaned in close to her and tried to get the bartender’s attention, but instead, I hoped to get hers. First impressions were everything, but I didn’t know what kind of image I’d present, because my interest in the Fleming girl was strong. I shuttered my face into an expression I’d perfected, dispassionate eyes that veil what I’m thinking or feeling.“Sir?” prompted the bartender.“I’d like Scotch neat with a glass of water.”“Would you like ice in your water, sir?”“No,” I said, turning my palm down with a slight back-and-forth motion.I stood close enough to Grace to inhale her scent, vanilla, and oranges, with a hint of clove mixed. It was a heady concoction. I wondered if her whole body tasted like sugary breakfast cereal. She turned toward me, and our eyes locked.

Goodreads / AmazonEXCERPT:Chapter 7KATEFive months earlierMarch 2017 Dinkytown, MinneapolisI wasn’t really paying attention until the boy was right in front of me.Instead, I was concentrating on the big stack of books on the counter. I was rearranging them like the bookstore owner wanted—to showcase the week’s bestsellers. It was busy work—I was looking for anything to keep me from thinking about my mom. If I thought about her, I would start screaming or crying or hit something. I hated her so much. Okay. I didn’t really really hate her, but I’d never been so angry at her in my life. I thought she loved me, but really, she’s been lying to me my whole life and keeping me from my family. My grandmother. Who was apparently alive despite my mom saying she was dead.My entire childhood I was insanely jealous of the other kids who had grandparents. On grandparents’ day at school, my mom didn’t even try to find someone else to go. Sadie’s grandparents were dead, too, but at least Sadie’s mom had arranged for this grandma-like neighbor to go. My mom just shrugged when I complained about it.Now I know why. She’s a liar. When I first saw the message on Facebook, I thought it was probably from some creepy old pervert pretending to be my long-lost grandma. Nobody I know ever gets on Facebook anymore. I don’t even know why I checked it that day. I didn’t want to believe her, but then she told me things about my mom that most people would never know.Like how the burn scar on my mom’s arm is from when she was trying to cook her own pancakes for breakfast when she was four. Or how she has this one mole on the back of her neck that you can only see when she puts her hair in a bun to take a shower. What I can’t understand, or forgive, is why my mother lied.My grandma said that she’d explain soon enough. She told me not to trust my mom. She said that everything my mom says is a lie. She also told me not to say anything to my dad. Yet.I’m so confused. Nothing seems real. Every day I come home and pretend I have a lot of homework, but instead, I go in my room and get in bed. I worry if I even look at my mom I’m going to scream. Sometimes when she’s not paying attention, I’ve caught myself staring at her, wondering who the hell this lying woman really is and where did my real mom go?I was so upset about my mom that I barely noticed the boy at the counter in front of me. When I looked up and saw him there, I jumped and he laughed. He stared at me with these black eyes and I couldn’t look away. It was unnerving. For a second I didn’t know what to say. And then when I did talk it was like I was ten again talking snotty to a cute boy.“What?”He laughed again. “Is that how you greet your customers?”His accent was lilting and sounded sophisticated. Before he opened his mouth, if you looked at him, with his short spiky dreads and baggy jeans, you’d think he was just some really cute thuggish boy from the north side. But when he spoke, he suddenly seemed like he should be on stage doing Shakespeare. It was unsettling. Who spoke that way?I blushed. “Sorry. Can I help you?”“Yes.” He crunched an already wrinkled piece of paper he was holding. “I’m looking for ‘The History of Herodotus.’”“Oh.” There you go, Kate, wow him with your scintillating response. “Actually, I’m not sure we carry that book but I can point you in the right direction, show you where it might be if we have it. It’s nonfiction, right?”I’d never heard of the book.“Yes. There are actually a few books by him. They are called ‘The Histories.’ They are about the history, politics, cultures, and traditions of Greece and North Africa and Asia. There are nine books in the series.”“Oh.” Again, brilliant answer, Kate. “I can see if we carry it.” My tone was officious, businesslike to hide that I felt like an idiot. I started to come out from behind the counter.“You don’t have it on your computer?” He eyed the laptop on the counter.I shook my head. It was the bane of my life. “The owner is a little old-fashioned. I’ve been trying to talk him into cataloging online, but it’s a slow process. We order online, but we don’t keep our inventory there yet. Kind of stupid, huh?”He shrugged. He gave me this smile and I couldn’t help but smile back.I came out from behind the counter, self-consciously smoothing my skirt down as I stepped in front of him. “Follow me. I’ll show you the nonfiction section and the area where it might be.”The old bookstore was a maze with one tiny room winding into another. And then there was the basement, which was more open, but still had lots of nooks and crannies. And had two creepy cats. And was haunted. And was where we were heading. The cats were doing their usual freak show. Caterwauling and running around like banshees, hopping from old sofas to worn-out armchairs scattered around the basement of the store.I usually tried to avoid the basement. It gave me the creeps. Today, I blamed the haunted part for the hairs on the back of my neck sticking straight up as I made my way down the stairs. It was that—not him being so close behind me.We wove through the stacks to a back corner where I swung around to face him. “If we have it, it would be somewhere around here.” I gestured to a small bookshelf. He didn’t say anything just stared at me. I held my breath, staring back. His eyes moved down to my mouth and he swallowed. It seemed impossible, but he was acting like he was nervous. He cleared his throat. “Okay. Thanks,” he finally said.I turned to go and he said, “You’re leaving?”“Yes, I’m the only one here. I have to stay upstairs at the counter.”“Oh.”I waited.“It’s just kind of freaking creepy down here. It’s like cold and shit and those cats are freaking me out.”“Yup.” I said with a smile, tilting my head. “It’s haunted.”His eyes grew wide. “Bloody hell?” His voice was incredulous and he quickly looked around. “Seriously, though.” His voice wavered and a panic flitted across his face. “Can you just wait a second while I look?”I was taken aback. He was six-feet-tall and looked like he could thump anyone who messed with him and, yet, he was frightened out of his wits.I shrugged. “Okay. I’ll probably hear the bell if someone comes in.” It was a lie, but I wanted to stay close to this boy. For no good reason.“I’ll help you look.” Kneeling, I scanned the bottom shelf. He knelt beside me, reading the titles quietly out loud. It took a while, but then I found it on the second shelf from the top. “Voila!”I plucked it off the shelf and handed it to him, plopping it in his arms. It was heavy. I was rewarded a smile.“Great. Let’s get the hell out of here,” he said and took off without waiting for me.I followed him up the stairs this time, trying not to smile, but it was tough. He was still at the bookstore an hour later, stretched out on one of our old beat-up leather chairs, concentrating on whatever he was reading. For the rest of my shift, I mostly forgot he was even there as I went about my work. Every once in a while, I’d look over and watch him beneath my eyelashes. Watch how his brow furrowed for a few seconds and then he’d nod as if he just understood something. It was cute. When it was a few minutes after closing time, I cleared my throat until he looked up. Behind him through the window, I could see that the world outside was white with snow pummeling down.He looked up as I reached for my coat.“Oh.” He sat up straighter. “Oh. What time do you close?” He seemed dazed, his finger holding his place in the book.“Five minutes ago.”He scrambled up. “Oh dear, I’m sorry.” He shrugged on his coat.I laughed. Who said “oh, dear?” Nobody I knew. At least nobody under seventy.I waited for him to bring the book up to the counter to buy, but he didn’t, just held it dangling from his arm and then, seemingly reluctantly, set it on the coffee table. It was a heavy book. And expensive. At least for our used bookstore. It probably cost twenty-five dollars or more. Maybe if he was a college kid, like I suspected, he couldn’t afford it.He opened the door and paused. A whoosh of cold air and small flakes of snow swooped inside. Then he turned. “See you next time?”I didn’t know what to say so I just smiled. I’m sure it looked like a grimace. So that wasn’t awkward, was it? Totally. Cringy. After I was sure he was gone, disappeared into the whiteness of the snowstorm, I picked up the book and put it behind the counter on a shelf where I kept my things.I hoped the boy would come back for it. And I didn’t know why.Sure, his smile was nice. And he seemed smart. In addition, his accent proved he wasn’t from around here. All those things combined made him the most intriguing boy I’d ever met.
