Wampus Cat Stalks Coastal North Carolina Native Family

 

A young native woman, living in a small community in coastal North Carolina, describes her family's experiences with the legendary Wampus Cat.

I recently came across this interesting account:

I live on the edge of the North Carolina coast, and have been in this beach town my whole life. You get a few miles west from the beach, and you're immediately in the country. My mother's side has lived here as far back as memory serves, and my father is a Sioux who's mother moved him here as a child away from the reservation.

Since I can remember, my mother's side of the family has had run ins with the Wampus Cat. Legends vary depending on where you are, but commonly around here it's said she was a Cherokee woman who snuck into the woods to listen in on a males-only meeting that included the chief and their medicine-man (not sure if it's the correct term for this tribe). She wore the skin of a cougar as a disguise, but she was found out, and the medicine man cursed her to forever wear the cougar skin. She now stalks people, for what reason, I don't know. But it follows me. And my family. Always has.

We've gotten so used to the Wampus Cat, we just expect her when we move to a new house, or the seasons are changing, or we find ourselves in a moment of emotional weakness. When my mother had a rough day being bullied in middle school, back in the 80's, she was crying and riding her bike home down a country dirt road. The sun is setting, but it's not dark out yet. Behind her she hears this shriek. I've heard it before, and it sounds like when an eagle screams, but with that gurgling guttural-ness of a cougars roar. So she turns around and she sees a huge creature, dark matted fur, in a stance like a gorilla stands in when it walks on its knuckles (back legs crouched a bit, chest and head up and supported by the arms on the knuckles.) She turns around and races on her bike all the way home. She told her mom what she saw, and she calmly says, "That's a Wampus Cat. They've never hurt us, they just like to spook you." And that was that.

So I grew up with a native father, superstitious as all hell, and practically jumping under the bed to hide when we heard the Wampus Cat scream in the backyard some nights, while my mom and grandmother just kind of acknowledge, "oh, it's the cat again." And I have gone my whole life with this as completely normal. Even when I got married and my husband was out by the woods with me, we'd hear that scream, see the leaves on the forest floor kick up as it stalked us, never coming too close, and have to realize that to people who didn't grow up in my town, this was a terrifying experience. To me it's like when you occasionally see a Cardinal in the trees. A bit different than the day to day, but nothing life changing.

My closest encounter was one night in high school. My friend and I, and her boyfriend, were sitting on the front porch enjoying the nighttime salt air and the lightning bugs. A huge, gorilla sized, extremely hairy animal runs up to the front of the porch, and screams like hell has opened up. Now I'm semi-used to the critter, but I don't want it 5 ft from me. We go to her bedroom, and for about an hour hear it stalking back and forth under her window, about 10 ft down (coastal towns have raised houses on stilts in case of hurricanes). Growling, spitting, screaming, rolling around in the foliage. Just being pesky and grumpy. Finally it wanders off, all is quiet, and we fall asleep.

Every once in a while, I'll still hear it. It's just life here. This town is extremely haunted. I've grown up a few miles from the Fort Fisher battleground and many historic and tragic places. I have too many unnatural encounters with all sorts of things to put in one post.

But that's it. My experience with a not-so-talked about creature that is just a part of life to me. Hope y'all learned something, and don't go out too late in coastal NC if you're easily scared!" WH

I received the following account back in 2014:

"I heard the Coast to Coast AM program last night about Cryptids. I heard some talk about Wampus cats. Well I grew up in west central GA right on the GA/AL line. We lived out in the country and had a swamp down behind our house. I had a dog named Silver Chief. When he was a puppy I was a baby. We grew up together. I had graduated high school when he died. Anyway that dog was not afraid of anything man or beast. We had been having some chickens killed at night & thought it might be a fox or something. One night I heard the chicken hollering so I grabbed a flashlight and a .22 rifle and ran to the chicken house. It was dark but I saw some big and white looking jump over the chicken wire fence. It was 7 ft high. I went in and there were six dead chickens.

It was not long after that on another night I heard my dog barking. I could tell by his bark he had something treed. All of a sudden he screamed and ran back to the house. He had never run from anything. My brother got the .22 and walked up into the woods. He was walking around and heard claws scratching on tree bark. He looked up right into the eyes of what we called a Wampus Cat. It was getting ready to pounce on him. My brother who was an excellent hunter just threw the rifle barrel up without taking time to aim and shot the cat right through the head.

He brought the cat home and I had never seen anything like it. It was solid yellow/white colored. Had long 3 or 4 inch fur, and a tail about 4 or 5 inches long. Even with the short tail he was 3 feet long from nose to tail. We skinned him, salted his skin and stretched it on the barn door.

I remember that we used to hear it screaming in the swamp at night. Sometimes it sounded like a woman screaming and sometimes it sounded like a baby crying.

I have never seen anything like it before or since. It had huge teeth that had grooves in the gums and lips on the opposite of the teeth. It had huge feet." PGD

Several Sasquatch Encounters (Footprint Photos) in Delta County, Colorado

A Delta County, Colorado resident has had several encounters with Sasquatch in the Smith Mountain area. He has included a few images of the prints he found.

Here is an account from 2016 that I recently found:

"My encounters occurred at Gunnison Gorge NCA and the other in Adobe Butts on the sides of the Grand Mesa in Colorado. Both incidents happened in February. I don't carry a GPS so I have to guess at elevations. Where we live is at 5,000' so it's pretty easy to make a guess.
First incident happened on Smith Mountain in Gunnison Gorge NCA. Smith Mountain is the northern end of the Black Canyon. I'm handicapped and had 2 large labs, a yellow male and a black female. I drive a Jeep Cherokee and love exploring the many Jeep trails out here. On the 1st event we had been up on the mountain, between 6,000 and 7,000 feet, for most of the afternoon. We were starting to drive back down, since we had been running into "nearly dead" sheep. That area is used by sheep ranchers to feed their herds and they always leave sick or injured sheep behind to fend for themselves.
We had just left a ewe with a broken leg because my yellow lab was circling her and barking up a storm. So we were driving back down the trail through a very rocky terrain where you have to drive slower then slow. About 20 yards to our left was a cliff a good 350 feet high (down for us), and to our right the top of the mountain stretched out in rolling hills for a good 5 or 6 miles. This area is filled with those pine trees that grow about 10-12 feet high. (Not sure of their name since I'm new to this area by a few years.) Anyway, both my dogs are hanging out the rear windows looking for more sheep or rabbits to bark at. Suddenly this huge hairy "man" ran across the trail in front of us, having come from the cliff side. It got to be in front of one of the pine trees and I watched as it knelt down onto one of it's knees probably trying to hide from my Jeep. I turned to make sure neither dog was escaping out a window, and when I turned back it had vanished. It stood a good 8 or 9 feet tall and was covered in longish fur the exact same color as an Irish Setter. I looked for tracks, but the ground was too rocky and frozen, although there was no snow for it being February.
The 2nd incident happened last February, 2015, and me and my black lab (had to put the yellow lab down) were riding along the main Jeep trail leading into the Adobe Butts area off of Trap Club Road. This trail goes back in about 6 miles and then meets up with East Pipeline Road. As I'm driving along the rim of one of the butts I come to a bend where I can see down into an area of many small canyons. It was only about 5 degrees out that day, but crystal clear skies. As I'm going around the bend I notice 2 individuals walking along in the main canyon. As they saw me they instantly ran into a side canyon and disappeared. It looked to be an adult with a juvenile that was maybe 4' tall. They were walking in the direction of the Gunnison River, coming down off the sides of the Grand Mesa (we're in Delta County out here). At the distance I saw them it appeared they were both clad head-to-toe in dark fur.
As I got further out the road I came across tracks of a single individual walking in the sand. Couldn't tell what they were, but since I had been in that same area just a few days prior, I knew they were new. About a mile before East Pipeline Road there's a 30' deep wash that runs parallel to the road and in a few spots there are older washed-out roads going down into and back up out of this wash. I could see by the tracks in the sand that pronghorn antelope were using this old trail as a way to traverse this canyon.
I walked down into it and discovered what looked like a child's barefoot footprint in the semi-wet sand in the bottom of the wash. Since it was in February and only 5 degrees outside I couldn't imagine someone letting their kid walk around in the mud barefoot. In the pix at one point it looks like the juvenile had stood with its feet together looking up through part of the bushier section of that wash. That wash away from the crossing road is around 30' deep yet only about 5-6 feet wide and very curvy.
I go out into both these areas and more of the surrounding areas around here but have yet to see another creature/Sasquatch.
I usually don't have a weapon with me and other then the 3 Sasquatches, I've only run into coyotes, pronghorns, mountain sheep, mule deer or elks, nothing causing a major protection mode to kick in. During both incidents the batteries in my camera picked that moment to die. I now keep my video camera running on the dashboard via an electric adapter so I can't have dead batteries again. The top of Smith Mountain would be a great place to go camping as it is very desolate up there. Very few people go up other then the sheep herders or some of the guys hang gliding from the tops of the cliffs out into the Grand Valley. For the record, I'm retired, on disability, 60 y/o, and trek out into the deserts nearly daily with my dog and explore the wildernesses around here." TT

Trevor James Constable (1925-2016) at the 1957 Interplanetary Spacecraft Convention at Giant Rock Airport in Landers, California.  Trevor was the first to propose the idea that UFOs were themselves ethereal beings from a quantum dimension projecting only the image of physical spaceships.

The 1951 annual award of the Gravity Research Foundation (GRF) of New Boston, New Hampshire, went to Myron Jordan Lover, Ph.D., Thermodynamics, of Ozone Park, New York, for his essay on the “Thermodynamic Aspects of Gravithermels.”  According to Lover, “In spite of their many shortcomings, the concepts of thermodynamics still enjoy referee status for problems concerning heat and other forms of energy.  It is sometimes fortunate,” he noted, “that the laws of thermodynamics are based on experience rather than pure reason.  Thus, when we pose the question, ‘Is it possible to discover any alloy the temperature of which can be affected by gravity waves?’ thermodynamics replies with a resounding affirmative, but only after we have subjected specific systems to its scrutiny.  

“It is comforting to realize that such alloys are neither startling nor unprecedented.  Thermodynamics anticipates their discovery, sanctions their use by reference to systems currently accepted in our philosophy, and even tells us the properties we ought to seek in order to discover the most efficient alloys.”

Lover created the term “gravithermels” to designate those alloys which may be heated or cooled by gravity waves.  The scientist maintained that his coining of this word followed the modern practice that has produced such words as “thermistor” and electrad.”  And in his broadened definition of gravithermel alloys, Lover included non-metallic systems that allowed for the removal of needless restrictions put on the practical application of his ideas, with conclusions independent of the chemical nature of the materials involved.  

With respect to the UFO phenomenon, this opens up some interesting possibilities.  Trevor James Constable (1925-2016), a native of New Zealand and communications officer for ships of the Matson Line, was also known as one of the contactees of the 1950s and frequent speaker at George Van Tassel’s Interplanetary Spacecraft Conventions out at Giant Rock Airport in Landers, California.  As a pioneer ufologist, he advanced the “space critter” theory in his book, They Live in the Sky (Los Angeles, California:  New Age Publishing, 1958).   The author describes his own telepathic contact with an invisible being, and how, at the suggestion of this ethereal intelligence, he began experimenting with infrared film in conjunction with the elementary principles of spiritual science. 

From this entity, Constable learns that flying saucers operate mainly in a quantum universe, unseen by humans but on rare occasions.  Some of the UFOs that we do observe, however, consist of both physical craft and living, biological creatures.  The book shatters many misconceptions generally held by ufologists and offers, instead, the twin premises that these UFOs are ultra-dimensional and living organisms that take on the appearance of spacecraft when they materialize in our atmosphere, possibly playing off the observer’s shared conceptions of flying saucers and their occupants in the collective consciousness.  These entities, emanations from a quantum universe, would certainly have ethereal bodies that defied the known laws of our reality.  In one sense, these entities can be viewed as consubstantial with the perceived UFOs, thereby exhibiting the ability to morph into anything they wish to project to us.  This is where a tie-in comes with the work in thermodynamics conducted by Dr. Myron Jordan Lover.

On the other hand, Constable does not discount the possibility that some of the UFOs may, indeed, be extraterrestrial spaceships of a physical nature.  Examples of the physical material from these types of UFOs may have been recovered by Air Force’s Space Reconnaissance Office, headquartered in Dayton, Ohio.  The universe is a big place, after all.  There is a plenty of room for a endless multitudes of intelligences at all planes of existence, all densities, all dimensions, all modalities.  

In returning to Dr. Lover’s essay, however, we see that he provides the equations which demonstrate that substances varying in temperature under the influence of gravity waves were already known.  The question, therefore, is reduced to one of degree rather than kind.  Thermodynamics pointed out the way to the production of alloys which may be on the orders of magnitude more efficient than previously known, or even suspected.

Frightening Bigfoot Encounter at Spring Hill Mountain, West Virginia

A rural West Virginia resident is outside at night when they have an very close and frightening encounter with a massive hairy bipedal creature. The witness felt they interrupted the creature while stalking a herd of deer.

The following account was recently forwarded to me:

I am a 35 year old hunter and fisherman. I own about 10 acres of land in Spring Hill Mountain, South Charleston, West Virginia. The only thing on my property is my house and the family junkyard, the rest is a large ridge line that butts up against the rear of my house of which we own all the way to the top.
It was late August 2013. I work the late shift so when I get home I always do an hour or two of housework. It was about 430 am, when I took the cat box out to empty it in the high grass (5ft+) that seperates my backyard from the junkyard, and past that is the ridge line. The ridge line is about 30 to 40 degrees and about a mile to the top.
That night I was trying to get the work done ASAP so I could catch some extra sleep. So I flipped on the back porchlight, unlocked the door, opened it, and walked outside. I did this very quickly, and after taking a couple of steps toward the stairs down, I begin to hear "ba - da - bum - ba - da - bum". I knew this sound instantly, it was a small herd of deer. I scare these deer on a nightly basis when I come home from work. The deer were on my left in the field beside my house about 30 yards away, outside the porch lights range, and now they are running away. I continue to walk the 10 steps or so and down the 12 steps to ground level. I bend over and dump the litter box in front of the high grass.
As I stand up I hear a noise no more than 7 ft away and directly in front of me within the high grass. Something was standing up at the same time as me. In my mind I wasn't worried in the slightest. Once a month or so I have to chase people out of my junkyard. Cussing and yelling the whole time at them. I assume this is another thief, I get a stern look on my face and get ready to start giving them the treatment. I see a large dark head raise up out of the high grass, but now the shoulders begin to come up and out of the grass. This absolutely blew my mind and I completely froze. I could see no features, while I was only 7 to 8 ft away the moon was 3/4 full and was backlighting this thing. It was so tall that it was blocking out the ridgeline and part of the moon. It had to have been at least 8 or 9 foot tall and three times wider than me.
There I am standing (still with the litter box in hand) eye to eye (rather I'm staring at its head) with some unknown creature. I don't know how long we stood staring at each other. I remember thinking that it was out of focus or something but by the moonlight bleeding through the edges of this thing that it was furry or hairy. I am a first responder, I have been trained to always be in control and I have never been scared even counting the three bear encounters (one included a bluff charge). This scared me bad. I'm standing there yelling to myself to "Run. Run now. That thing can just reach out and grab you. Run" but my body would not move. Then it begins to move. I think I'm dead at this point. Something, arm shaped, swings across the top of the grass and the body gets thinner. It was about 4 or 5 of its steps before I realized it had turned around and was now walking away from me, very clearly on two feet, towards the ridgeline. I still couldn't move.
It took till it hit the bottom of the ridgeline before I could move. I ran, still with the cat box, as fast as I could to the stairs, up and inside the door. All I could think is you have to get your gun. As I enter the back door I reach for the deadbolt and my hands are shaking so bad I could barely lock it. I tell myself to take a breath because I will never get the key into my gun safe shaking this bad. I take the biggest gasp of my life. It was only then that I realized that I had not been breathing, from the time that I stood up to now I had not taken a single breath. In a flash I had got to my room, opened the safe and pulled my already loaded AR. I stood about 10 ft away from the backdoor with my weapon ready just waiting. It was about then I got a massive wave of nausea. All I can think is "It's just shock. Be ready, be ready it's coming!" I am trained on the center of the door and the moment I hear a noise I was going to unload that 30 clip straight through the door. I kept thinking that I had pissed it off. It was within 20 yds of the deer and seemed to be attempting an ambush on them. Well, I screwed all that by scaring the deer, and I was for sure it would be back. Thank whatever God you chose that it did not.
It made no noise aside from the footfalls and I smelled nothing. I remember thinking afterward that it could have easily attacked or just drug me up that mountainside and no one would know anything. They would have just found an empty house with an unlocked back door. I can't tell you I saw a Bigfoot but I can say it was no bear or man. I saw some kind of a unknown large hairy bi-pedal creature.
I have never told my encounter to anyone and this will be the only / last time I speak of it to anyone. I used to have a passing interest in Sasquatch, thinking it would be cool if they really did exist. I now will not consume anything to do with it and never will." WV

Firsthand UFO Witness Accounts in UK, Ontario and Oklahoma

3 UFO witness recount their firsthand experiences in the UK, Ontario and Oklahoma.

Here are a few recently received firsthand UFO encounter reports:

“I have only seen two UFOs in my life and one of them looked like this one (a diamond shaped craft). I was walking home in the west end of Toronto and I saw a diamond shaped craft spinning in the distance. Aside from the spinning motion, it remained in the same space in the sky. This took place in the fall around 4:30 PM in 1980. I watched the UFO for about 20 minutes and it was still there when I went in. It was pretty cool.” S

“I saw this (a UFO) in the late 1980s, just east of Tulsa, Oklahoma. It flew alongside our car as we went down the highway. When we got off the highway, it turned and followed us down the road. We finally stopped and got out to see, and it flew directly over the car. No sound, no nothing and it was LOW to the ground.” MC

"I was born in 1978, Bournemouth, England. I will do this chronologically, as I stated in my initial email I don't believe in ghosts, but at the age of about 7 I had a friend stay over. We had bunk beds, I was on the bottom a friend was on the top. I woke and saw a green misty ball, circular but no defining edges slightly transparent in front of my wardrobe. I woke my friend and they saw it for a short while as well. For some reason we were not scared and never told anyone, though I did recently ask said friend about it and they do have a vague recollection of it.

Then we moved and I guess I was about 12 and my mother bought me one of those old radio alarm clocks that have the red numbers. It was placed on top of my old style TV on a chest of draws and I went to sleep. I don't remember what time I woke up but I stirred and looked in the direction of the TV and clock and there was a white mist that resembled a woman head to foot in white. I immediately went under my blanket head covered frozen in fear. I'm not sure for how long but did eventually go back to sleep. Now I mention the alarm clock as it was a radio alarm clock, the type that had the little black wire for a antennae which was all looped with a cord tie type thing. When I put it on the TV I had no interest on the radio function. I had an old cabinet stereo, the ones with a glass door. But the next morning I went to the TV and clock and the black wire was unravelled. I know I didn't do it. I asked my mother and she also said she didn't. still bothers me now at 42 as I don't believe in ghosts.

Now I'm about 13 and me and friends are out in the common (not sure what you call it in America sorry). We spotted a few lights in the sky and after looking I could tell they were close to us. There was one bright white light, no flashes of other colours, etc.  The other object was easy to tell as a helicopter. The helicopter flew right up to the other light and then backed away. No idea what it was but from a young age I had a real interest in planes, etc and knew straight away that was against flight regulations.

The next one was about 2011 winter. By this point I'm a smoker and smoke outdoors. I was working nights at this point but it was my night off so I'm out at all hours smoking. I'd say it was about 3 am and I'm outside having a smoke and I just felt something above me. I looked up and it was a dark mass very slowly going over my head. I could tell it was low as the way it blocked the stars and then they would reappear, a bit like parallax. I want to say triangular but to be honest I could not tell.

Next one really freaked me out as I'd heard of the phenomenon. It was 2017, again out late about 12 pm having a smoke and I see 3 very bright lights in the lower sky not moving. I've always been a lover of the night sky, so I know Venus from Uranus, they were just as bright as Venus if not brighter. I suffered the same fate as many have. I thought about my camera but was just transfixed. I did the parallax check by walking up and down a bit, and these lights were closer than stars or the moon. Then one by one they just went out slowly dimming to nothing. On this occasion I spotted a plane near to where I saw these objects, checked flight radar and tracked the plane to my local airport. I sent an email asking if anything had been reported by the pilots and the reply was no. I do have that reply, but it's a bit ambiguous and for some reason can't find my sent email, but have emailed them again as I had a case number.

The last one. This one is simple. Last year again having a smoke I saw something cover the sky from horizon to roof top silent in about 5 seconds, shape could have been triangular but can't be sure. All I know it was going fast and it was no meteorite or similar. Also, I've seen 2 fireballs as well, amazing when they light up pitch black." MF

Bizarre 'Yellow Eyed Shapeshifter' Encounter at Resort Pool

A woman and her daughters are at a resort/casino pool. They notice a strange woman walking around the pool, then asking bizarre questions. What happens next is unexplained!

The following account was referred to me. Very bizarre:

"I’m almost 100% positive my mom, sister, and a pool guy saw some sort of “shape shifter” or witch or something while staying at Native American casino in Sloan, Iowa.
My sister and I were in the pool and my mother was chilling reading a book. This black lady, light skinned with freckles and almost yellow eyes walks in the pool with jeans on and a sweater and starts circling the pool and staring at my sister and I. We didn’t notice but my mother did.
Eventually my mother starts staring at her and the lady stops and asks my mother what’s she’s reading. My mom is sketched out and starts giving my sister and I the “get the f*ck out of the pool now” look. We got out of the pool not knowing anything and we get to the table and ask what’s wrong. She says the lady was asking if my sister's hair was real and asking if she cuts it if it’ll come back and other weird sh*t.
The lady goes into the women’s bathroom and we’re sitting there calming down and gathering our stuff. Time goes by, like 15 minutes and this lady never comes out. My mother eventually asks the pool guy if he saw her go in the bathroom. The pool guy responds “Yeah, I just cleaned that. I’ll go check” and he comes back with books of matches. 2 handfuls.
He tells us that there’s no way he forgot to clean up those matches and he didn’t see that woman in there. Just as we’re all doing the weird “what the hell was with her weird face” this woman walks out of the bathroom and leaves. We all just watched her walk out of the pool area towards the casino. The pool guy turns and said, and I’ll never forget, “I don’t know where she was hiding or how she did that but she’s a Houdini if I’ve ever seen one”
We were shook as hell. My mom didn’t even want the valet, she wanted to leave ASAP. We went to our room and packed our stuff and went to our van. As we were about to pull out this brownish black dog with yellow eyes comes out of nowhere and sits down right in front of our van.
This dog walked up and sat down and stared directly at us like it was at attention. My mom flashed the lights. Honked the horn. Revved the engine. This thing wouldn’t move. Then my sister goes “oh my God! It has the same eyes!”
My sister was sitting in the passenger seat and this dog calmly walks up to the passenger door and gets up on the window and stares directly into the window at my sister. The last thing I remember was my mother screaming “leave her alone!!!” While tucking my head, I didn’t know if it was going to start barking or what. We made it to the gas station which is like right next door and my mom had to gather herself, buy coffee and gas up before we drove home. Ain’t ever been back to that place and not sure I ever want to." CR

'Big, Chicken-Like Prints' Found in Southwest Chicago

The following report was filed by Phantoms & Monsters Fortean Research investigator Tobias Wayland:

The Singular Fortean Society received the following email on April 30th, 2020.

According to my mother's friend who lives on 63rd [Street] and [South] Pulaski [Road] in Chicago, Illinois, there has been a rumor of mothman being present in their backyards. There have been disappearances of people, and neighbors around that area have noticed “big, chicken-like [footprints]” behind their backyards.

In my mother’s friend's case, she called law enforcement and detectives came only to take pictures and quickly erased the evidence of the mothman. Many of that area are scared or are warned not to go out at night when the “thing” appears. [Her friend] states that law enforcement seems to be covering the fact that this creature is around their neighborhood and [they] don’t do anything about it.

I wanted to tell you this because it’s a very interesting topic; especially since I’ve grown up doing research on urban legends, yet never knew it would hit so close to home. Thank you so much for taking your time in reading this, and at the moment I am trying my best to convince [my mother's friend] to go out and take pictures of the giant footprints but she, of course, is frightened.

Lead investigator Tobias Wayland replied to the email, thanking the woman who sent it and asking that she contact any witnesses to see if they’d be willing to speak with him.

She responded that she would contact them “as soon as possible.”

In a brief follow-up message, she requested that her name not be used in conjunction with the investigation.

No further response has yet been received.

The account referred to in the email is strongly reminiscent of an incident which occurred on February 28th, 2020, in which  a man contacted Lon Strickler of Phantoms & Monsters to report a sighting his mother had of a “big, black birdman.” According to the man, the creature left footprints in the snow that he was able to photograph.

That sighting was only about six blocks east of the location mentioned in the woman’s email.

At least two other sighting reports of weird, winged beings are associated with South Pulaski Road; one from 2011 in which a man photographed a statue near 63rd and Pulaski, only to later realize that there was a flying creature present in the shot, and another from August of 2017, when a woman reported the sighting of a “flying mothman” over South Pulaski Road, “right before 55th Street.”

In the case of the report from 2011, it now seems likely that the witness accidentally photographed a butterfly which had flown in front of his camera, and some believe the February 28th, 2020 footprints to be misidentified rabbit tracks—although in the latter case that hypothesis does not explain the witness’s testimony regarding the six-foot-tall “birdman” she claimed to have seen. 

Rumors of a coverup like the one mentioned in the email go back to at least 2017, when investigator Manuel Navarette reported that he’d heard from members of the media and municipal employees that the city government was trying to stifle news of the sightings.

There have so far been no missing persons who can be reliably connected to the flying humanoid reports, although at least five people—ranging in age from 16 to 66—have been reported missing in Cook County since February of 2020.

Because of its proximity to other unexplained sighting reports, this report could be related to the string of ‘Mothman’ sightings from within a few hundred mile radius surrounding Lake Michigan, including every state bordering the great lake. These sightings ostensibly began in the spring of 2017, but more historical accounts are being reported as more people become aware of the phenomenon. They generally take place in the evening or at night, often in or near a park, and around water.  Witnesses consistently describe a large, gray or black, bat or bird-like creature—although in a small number of cases the creature was described as insect-like—sometimes with glowing or reflective red, yellow, green, or orange eyes, and humanoid features such as arms and legs are often reported. Some witnesses have reported feeling intense fear and an aura of evil emanating from the creature they encountered.  Many of the sightings are also of something seen only briefly or are described only as a flying creature with few details, which leaves open the possibility that a large bird or bird-like being could explain some—although certainly not all—of the encounters. A number of associated high strangeness incidents have also occurred alongside the creature sightings; including reports of UFOs, other anomalous flying creatures and mysterious humanoids, parapsychological phenomena, and bizarre events experienced by those investigating the sightings.

Black Eyed Kids: 'Why did they come back?'

2 roommates hearing constant tapping on a window that alarms them. Then 3 boys with black eyes appear at the front door, totally freaking out the residents. This has happened before!
The following account was recently forwarded to me:
"I knew it! I f*cking knew it! I had an encounter when I was 13, thinking I was okay. But it happened again! My roommate saw it too! It's been four or five years since my last encounter. I think I'm safe right? WRONG!
I moved last year, and I recently thought, 'Hey, remember those kids a few years ago? Funny, they can't get you now.' WRONG!
I live on a mountain, about an hour away from the beach, in a well populated neighborhood with my roommates. Two chill lesbians and a gay college dude. Super cool people. I think nothing can hurt me now because there are people everywhere. But no, I'm stupid and jinxed myself.
I was home two days ago, class was cancelled and the dude of the house was home too taking a nap. I'm in the kitchen watching Netflix and doing homework when there's a knock on the window. Obviously this is weird as hell, but I have weird friends. Maybe one of them is trying to scare me. I brush it off and continue what I was doing. Then it happens again. Then once again. I brush it off because maybe it was the snow if it wasn't my friends. Things like this happen all the time with them. Well, it goes on for like ten minutes and now I'm kind of starting to freak out. My friends don't have this much patience.
I go to Charlie's room, the guy, and wake him up. I'm not one that's usually riled up so he's concerned too. We both go to the window, I have my phone out with the camera and 911 within a touch, and Charlie has a bat. We look out the window and no one's there. After a minute we calm down and go and sit in the living room. Chaz's mom is a cop so he says he'll tell her about it later. We think we're okay so we chill and watch TV together.
Thirty minutes later the doorbell rings. I go and open the door. At first I don't see anything. Then down on the bottom of the stairs of the apartment, I see three young boys dressed in black hoodies, jeans, and brown or black bangs. At first I didn't move. I was frozen in place! Then Charlie asked who it was and I came to my senses and got a good look at the kids then slammed the door shut behind me. I started bawling. And I mean SOBBING. I don't know what to do! Charlie is freaking out because I don't cry! He ran to the door with the bat we have on the window seal and looked outside. He saw them too!
He started freaking out because he didn't know what to do so he started yelling at them to leave! He said they started smiling! I was crying even more now, he was screaming, and I think the neighbors wanted to call the cops.
Now think about this! He didn't know what they were. He thought they were normal kids that had scared me!! He didn't see their eyes yet.
I start yelling at him to get inside when I hear a bunch of footsteps running up the stairs and Charlie screams and runs inside. He's telling me he saw their eyes and that they were black and now we're both freaking out and grabbing kitchen knives.
Eventually we calm down and look outside again. No one's there but we can see a group of kids pass the complex with three that we think are the BEKs.
I told him about the other thing that happened to me and now we're scared to be In this house! We told the other roommates and they thought we were high or something. Once again no one believes me!
Sorry this is all over the place, this happened like three days ago and I've been on edge ever since.

Possible Bigfoot Spies Campsite in Lake of the Woods, California

A group of friends hike into an area known as Lake of the Woods near Frazier Park, California and set up camp. They experience rock throwing into the campsite as well as seeing the shadow of a large being.

The following account was recently forwarded to me:

"I grew up in the San Fernando Valley in southern California. Having family that lived in a small mountain town called Frazier Park, I was able to frequently get away from the city life and enjoy fresh pines and cool air.

Frazier Park is a typical mountain full of friendly people and nothing too extraordinary happens except maybe a wildfire now and then and rumors of satanic cults. Interestingly enough there is a pentagram spray painted on the wall of a small bridge that crosses a river into Lake of the Woods.

Anyways, I would spend time with my cousins up there at least once a month and we would usually spend one day either hiking or camping. Most of the time it was uneventful, peaceful and full of laughter and good times. But spending that much time out in the woods your odds of encountering something unusual increases.

My two cousins, their friend Edward and I had a 3-day camping trip planned near Lockwood Valley. It was about a 6 mile hike in from a nearby Boy Scout camp and it is thick with pine. The first day was pretty normal. We hiked in, set up camp, cooked our food and talked.

I'm going to estimate about 3 hours passing after we went to sleep, we all woke up to what sounded like rocks hitting the ground. Obviously someone found our camp and was messing with us right? So Edward gets this genius Idea to get out of his tent and start yelling angrily to try to intimidate them. After a few minutes of that he stops and we all just sit there and listen. That's when it struck me, we didn't hear ANYTHING. No crickets, no night birds, nothing. That's also when I noticed that the area smelled incredibly bad, similar to a dead animal, but I suppose that isn't too out of the ordinary.

So we all agree that the person is gone and decide to go back to sleep and forget about it. Edward however still look unnerved and confided with me that he couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched. I felt it too but rather than spooking everyone I figured it would be better just to sleep it off and get out of there in the morning. Whoever it was hadn't made any sort of move so they must have been gone.

The next day we all woke up having slept undisturbed the rest of the night and cooked/ate breakfast. We didn't mention the events from the night before at all. I guess everyone wanted to just put it behind them which was probably for the best. After all, it probably just another person that decided to mess with us when they happened upon our camp. That day went pretty normal, we hiked, fished, shot at some empty beer cans with an air-soft rifle and so on.

Night 2 came and we weren't as quick to dismiss the events that happened the night before. We agreed to take shifts watching our camp to make sure no one came and stole anything. We also decided to cut our last day short and pack up and leave in the morning. I took the first shift watching our camp. It was very dark and peaceful.

The moon was out which illuminated a good 10 foot radius around our camp, so I had a good idea what was going on around us. Nothing out of the ordinary really happened except that nasty smell came back near the end of my shift. It was my cousin Jade's turn to watch now. So he gets up and I hit the sack and instantly fall asleep.

After some time pass I feel someone tapping me. Its Jade. He whispers to me, "Hey.. I want you to see something. But you need to be absolutely silent and move slowly."

So I get up and peak out the tent and don't really see anything. He says to me, "Look past those two pine trees and tell me what you see." I look and sure enough I see a silhouette of someone crouching. It was so still that you could almost mistake it for a rock or something. However I had visually scanned through this area before going to bed and certainly didn't remember seeing this there.

Now this guy was BIG, probably my height while crouching, going by the height of the tree. It was creepy though because it was just crouching there staring at us, motionless. So I reached back under my covers and grabbed my air-soft rife. Took aim the best I could while under the influence of adrenaline and shot at it. I heard it hit wood so it obviously missed, but that shadow "grunted" and took off running through the woods. You could easily hear the leaves and twigs breaking and a noticeable thud as its feet hit the ground.

We ended up letting my other cousin and their friend sleep the rest of the night and took their shifts watching camp since we were so buzzed up on adrenaline. We didn't tell them the next day either, mostly because we loved to camp and if we let them know what we saw we'd never get them to come back with us into those woods." AF

'The Davenport (Iowa) Demon': Unknown Cryptid in the Mississippi River

A strange series of event in Davenport, Iowa along the Mississippi River, where witnesses describe a 'tentacled' entity emerging from the water. They dubbed it 'The Davenport Demon.'

Here's a strange account that was forwarded to me by a reader:

"It was the year 1964 in Davenport, Iowa. A decent-sized city, it lay on the Mississippi River. I've only heard about the events involving this “demon” from people in the area, and from a few miscellaneous newspaper clippings that made their way to Nebraska.

During the summer of 1964, a couple were diving along the Mississippi River on S. Concord Street at night, around 23:00. As they were driving, the woman – a Miss Clarissa Belle – pointed out something weird in the river water. Almost immediately after, "something horrendous reared from the water, and raced across the road," as put by Clarissa Belle when interviewed a few weeks after the second sighting, when it began to be taken seriously by the media. The couple barely had time to make out what it was, and the man – a Mr. Samson Browne – slammed on the brakes.

They stopped, and thought that they had hit whatever it was. Clarissa Belle, terrified yet, stayed in the car as Samson Browne got out to check it out. While the car had been splashed with river water, it was undamaged and they returned to town, only mentioning it as an oddity to their friends.

It was in late winter of 1969 that the second reported sighting of the “demon” was made. In this instance, the demon was seen by a married couple – Jolene and Hank Miles – and their friend, whose name has been forgotten to time. It was once again by the river, this time on River Drive on the way home from Credit Island Park.

The “demon” emerged from the river's icy surface in a sudden surprise lunge, landing on the roadway's southern lane right in front of the car. Jolene Miles had, when the couple reported it to the newspapers, described it as “ugly and vile, almost like a disfigured raccoon with the most godforsaken tentacles”. Surprisingly (unless a frequent reader of such newspaper reports, where witnesses that were together frequently contradict one another), Hank Miles had left out the comparison to a raccoon and described it as almost catfish like, except with tentacles instead of fins. This description was the same as their friend's, except in that simple comparison.

In the 70s, reports grew of it until a climatic encounter in the fall of 1975. Unlike most of the reports, this one was not on a car but rather at a private boat ramp in Davenport Harbor. Lee Anderson and his current mistress, Britney Cooper, were putting their boat into the harbor at night when the water began to have a strange light from it, as if there were “Searchlights underneath the water's surface.”

They were intimately entangled when suddenly the boat tipped, sending them both into the water. Barely escaping, Lee Anderson reported that his mistress had fallen in and drowned to the police, and that a “thing with tentacles” had attacked the two of them. The burn marks on his body were explained by the idea of something electrical being dropped into the water with them. When the body of his mistress was found, it was burned completely to an almost unrecognizable point, except for the face.

This first deadly encounter led to Lee being charged with manslaughter despite his reporting it as an animal attack and the wounds being nearly impossible for the man to make (without specific equipment), and Lee Anderson was sentenced to prison He committed suicide a week after being let out on parole. Throughout the 70s, several more reports were made.

By the 80s when the last major newspaper report on the Davenport Demon was made (which was another event like the first death from the “demon”) it had become a local legend. To this day, it is unknown if the Davenport Demon was real, or if it was simply a scapegoat for accidents and murders that people tried to use. While there are some people who claim to have seen it still, none of these stories have been put into the newspapers and have merely been mentioned by people who live in Davenport, and even then mainly people who had been hunting it much like the more popular bigfoot hunters."
