OTHERWORLDLY HUMANOID? The Bright Green-Eyed Man Who Vanished!

The writer describes a story that his great-grandmother would talk about the time when she, as a young woman, encountered a human-like being that had bright green eyes and telepathically spoke to her.

I received the following account:

"My great-grandmother had a cool story that's always stuck with me. For reference this happened in the early 40s to 50s, and as recounted by my grandmother, here is the story:

My great-grandmother used to work at a gas station sometime after the Second World War. She was young at the time, and this was before she met my great-grandfather. She was in her early 20s, but she may have been a teenager working to stock shelves and sell cigarettes. This was around the time that modern Child Labour laws started coming into effect, so I know for sure she was old enough to work the counter, and since cigarettes weren't ever really seen as toxic around this time, she was able to sell them.

One day she had been working her usual shift when a tall man walked in, he was normal looking, wore a fedora and a tanned suit. Very formal, and very much human at first glance.  Clean-shaven with brown hair and a very normal-looking face, not chubby or heavy on the jawline, but definitely fit and relatively plain. His skin color was white but slightly tanned. He had no visible beard stubble or age marks. No freckles or moles. His hair was short, almost shaved but clearly visible.

As the man approached the counter he asked simply for a pack of cigarettes in a very human-like tone. As my great-grandmother turned around with the cigarettes in hand the man looked up at her from staring down at the counter (counting out the assorted change) and locked eyes with my great-grandmother.

His eyes glowed green. They weren't green in simple color, but actually glowing vibrant nuclear green. My great-grandmother began to realize he wasn't talking at all, he was talking to her in her mind, and the more they stared at each other the more he began to peer into her mind. She described it as though he was with her, watching himself through her eyes, reading her emotions, and scanning her memories. She could see herself through his eyes, drew on his intentions, and found them to be pure and whole. Compelled, she slid the cigarettes to him, he simply smiled as any normal man with emotion would, broke eye contact, and walked out the door.

Naturally, my great-grandmother followed him outside, keeping him relatively close. She saw him stare back at her over his shoulder as he walked away and simply vanished. His green eyes peered back at her one final time as he just vanished into thin air. Effectively dematerializing from reality. This was before Roswell, or the notion of extraterrestrials became popular because my great-grandmother didn't ever think the man was an alien. She thought he was an Angel for the longest time.

She never once felt threatened by the man, and he simply became known in the family as the man with the green eyes.

Many years later, my mother experienced a slew of strange dreams involving aliens, particularly where they create hybrids between themselves and us humans to blend into society. The dreams had been consistent, but she believed they weren't able to tolerate our planet's atmosphere for some reason; so, created genetic hybrids to act as agents on Earth as we near a certain landmark in our society; thus welcoming us to the galactic community when we reach that landmark. They view us with benevolent curiosity and are part of a wider community that preserves primitive planets. This community consists of many different alien races, thus explaining the differences in accounts ranging from the beings themselves to the actual spacecraft. These hybrids they create can act as the bridge between us when they decide to make contact with us, through them we are judged and seen. Through them, our intentions are known.

They will intervene if we launch our nuclear devices, hence their sudden uptick in the last century." W

'WERE BEAR?' Human-Like, Upright Creature Shocked Witness!

"I hit the high beams, and when I did this 'thing' turned its head and bore its teeth, running into the opposite trees on two legs. I have no idea what this thing was!"

I received the following account

 "I have been reading about sightings of man-like creatures all over the internet. Back in January 2014, I was driving home from my workplace and witnessed an unexplained 'thing' cross the roadway in front of me.

I was at my workplace, the Toyota plant in Buffalo, West Virginia. I was on vacation, but needed to stop by and pick up my paycheck. It was close to 5 PM. I was driving home on Rt 35 and then turned off onto Hurricane Creek Rd heading towards home. It was dark by that time. There is a wide turn about 1/4 mile from the highway. As I drove through the turn, something on two legs walked out of the woods and onto the roadway.

I hit the high beams, and when I did this 'thing' turned its head and bore its teeth, running into the opposite trees on two legs. I have no idea what this thing was, but the teeth were huge. It was about 6-7 ft high. It had a snout like a bear but the head looked like a man - eyes, ears, and hair. The body had black hair all over it, but it was built like a stocky man - long legs with big flat feet and arms with man's hands. It shocked the hell out of me.

When I got home I told my wife, but didn't tell my daughter. I didn't want to scare her. I've been hunting in this county all my life but have never seen or heard of anything like this.

I thought I'd write you after seeing the upright canine reports but I don't think that is what this is. I could only call it a 'bear man.' I'd like to know what you thought." JH

Witness Encounters ATTRACTIVE GHOST At Omni Shoreham Hotel, D.C.

"The figure was draped in bright white light and had the facial and body features of a young woman - completely nude beneath the light. She was staring into my eyes and slightly smiling."

I received the following account several years ago:

"Hello - In 2012, during a weekend, I was in Washington D.C. for business reasons. My reservation was made at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Northwest D.C. - I have stayed at this hotel on several other occasions.

I actually grew up in suburban Maryland (now live in NYC) but not familiar with any haunted history of the hotel. I am used to paranormal activity - my townhouse is haunted by the spirit of a former stage actress according to a medium friend. Our situation is benign - though we do hear singing late at night.

I checked in on Friday (2/17) and went directly to my room on the 8th floor - #866 - a very nice medium suite. It was 3:30 pm - I had decided to drive since I needed to stop at a client's location before proceeding to D.C., so I was arriving later than I had hoped. There were a few errands I needed to take care of before I met a client for drinks. After the meeting I decided to hit the sack early (about 10 pm) since I had a busy agenda planned for Saturday.


I actually fell asleep not long after I got into bed. Everything was fine until I was woke by a constant 'groaning' sound. I sat up and looked at the clock - it was 2:25 am. The sound seemed to come from the room next door - I just assumed there was a sexual encounter going on. The sound continued for about 10 minutes - then gradually stopped. I fell asleep - but just for a few minutes. Suddenly there was an horrific female scream that sounded like it came from under my bed! I freaked - I was frozen and afraid to get out of bed. I was worried that someone else in the hotel heard the scream and that the police would break down my door any second!

Nothing happened - no more screams and no more moaning. Then as I lay in bed shaking like a scared child I noticed a bright white form slowly rise on my right - from the floor by my bed until it stood full body. This spectre was only a few feet from me - I honestly thought I was going to faint.

The figure was draped in bright white light and had the facial and body features of a young woman - completely nude beneath the light. She was staring into my eyes and slightly smiling. I will admit that she was quite attractive - she would have been a '10' in my book. After several seconds she turned around and started to move toward the wall at my right. The form dissipated before reaching the wall. By this time I was more shocked than scared - I didn't fall asleep the rest of the night.

Saturday was an unproductive day - I was still shook from the sighting plus I didn't get much sleep. I went back to the hotel late afternoon and checked out - even though I had the room for the night there is no way I staying another night." R

I found the following information about the history of the Omni Shoreham Hotel:

The Omni Shoreham is a true Washington D.C. institution, that has hosted inaugural balls for every United States President from FDR to Bill Clinton. Shoreham opened in 1930 and has become a historic Washington D.C. Landmark that has been central to the most influential city in the world. The Omni Shoreham is reportedly haunted by the ghosts of the adopted daughter of an investor and of a housekeeper. The hotel has named the suite where the haunting takes place the Ghost Suite.

Ghost Stories

The Omni Shoreham was built in.1930. The owner of the hotel, Harry Bralove, needed financial backing, which he received from Henry Doherty. Doherty became a minority shareholder and took a suite of rooms in the hotel. Mr. and Mrs Doherty lived in their suite of rooms until 1973. Occupying the suite along with the couple was their adopted daughter, Helen, and the Executive Housekeeper of the hotel, Juliette Brown. Juliette Brown looked after the family.

Juliette awoke early one morning feeling ill. She reached for the telephone but died before completing the call. Some time afterward, Helen Doherty also died mysteriously in the suite. The causes of these mysterious deaths were never disclosed. Rumors of suicide and drug overdose were alleged.

The Dohertys vacated the premises and strange occurrences started. Televisions and lights were turned on spontaneously at 4 am. Although the suite was unoccupied, guests in the adjacent room reported hearing loud noises in the suite. The suite has been redesigned, restored, and renamed the Ghost Suite.

History of the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington D.C.

The Shoreham Hotel was the vision of Harry Bralove, an ambitious man who earned a degree from Georgetown Law School while working for the United States Navy. After he left the Navy, he started a construction company building apartment homes.

While walking the property along Rock Creek Park, he envisioned a grand hotel. Architect Joseph Abel brought the vision to life with the eight-story hotel featuring Art Deco decor. The building had running ice water, an indoor ice rink in the lounge, and high-speed Westbrook elevators. In the basement, a furniture factory manufactured quality custom-built furnishings for the hotel's public areas and guest rooms.

When the hotel opened a single room was $5, a double room was $8 and parlors and suites were $12.

Since the 1930s, Shoreham has been a favorite destination of world travelers, dignitaries, and presidents. The grand opening of the stately hotel was celebrated with a splash when famous singer Rudy Vallee flew in on a tri-motor Amelia Earhart airplane.

During World War II, the hotel got around the rationing of alcohol by purchasing the entire stock of a Scottish distillery. The hotel was home to the legendary Blue Room, which was the swankiest nightclub of its time. The Blue Room was a favorite gathering spot for John and Jacqueline Kennedy. Prominent politicians have called the Shoreham their home while staying in the nation's capital. Famous guests have included President Ronald Reagan, President George Bush, Sr., Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, West German Chancellor Helmet Kohl, Senator Ted Kennedy, Eva Gabor, and actress Helen Hayes.

The landmark hotel is a member of the National Trust Historic Hotels of America and Resorts and Great Hotels of the World. The hotel has been awarded the AAA Four Diamond rating.

BASAJAUN: Legendary Lord of the Forests

Some mythical creatures originate in tradition and tales from the distant past. However, each culture is associated with a multitude of interesting and odd creatures, many of these beings are humanoids. One of these legendary humanoids is the Basajaun.

In Basque mythology, the Basajaunak is a spirit that dwells in caves or in the woods protects flocks of livestock, and teaches skills such as agriculture and ironworking to humans. They are collectively known as the 'Basajaun, the Lords of the Forests.' Fifteenth-century carvings depicting the Basajaunak can be seen in Burgos Cathedral and in the monastery of Santa María la Real in Nájera. The Basajaun also exists in Aragonese mythology in the valleys of Tena, Ansó, and Broto. There are writings about these 'simiots' of Spain's Catalunya and Upper Aragon - creatures that may well find their U.S. counterparts in the Bigfoot or Sasquatch.

These creatures are of various heights (though most are very tall), completely covered in hair with a long mane that falls to the knees, and wander the Pyrenees with incredible agility. They were said to be megalith builders and became known as rural genies.

The legend says that long ago, only the Basajauns knew how to plant, harvest, and mill wheat to make flour. The Basajauns kept this knowledge to themselves, but one Basque man worked out a plan to steal the secret and give it to the human race. The Basque man made a bet with the Basajauns to see who could jump over the heaps of wheat they had harvested.

The Basajauns laughed at the Basque man because they knew that a mere human would be no competition for them, and they laughed at his big floppy shoes. They all jumped over the wheat easily, but when the Basque man tried, he landed on top of one of the heaps, and the Basajauns laughed again.

Then the Basque man laughed, and he laughed last and best, but quietly, because his trick had worked. Now, the Basajauns are big and slow-witted, but when they saw the Basque man walking away home, with his big, floppy shoes full of grains of their wheat, they realized that they had been tricked. When they stopped laughing, the Basque man began to run for his life, and it's a good thing that he did. He was already far away when one of the Basajauns threw a hatchet. The lords of the woods may be slow, but they are strong.

The Basque man saw the hatchet coming, and he ducked behind a chestnut tree just in time, because the hatchet struck the tree and split it in half. Now the Basque man had the seeds, but he didn't know when was the right time of the year to sow them. Fortunately, a man was passing by the cave of one of the Basajauns, and he heard him singing:

"If the humans knew this song
They'd be well informed.
When the leaf is in the bud
Then you sow the corn.
When the leaf falls off the trees
Then you sow the wheat.
When the February feast comes round
Sow the turnip in the ground."

The man told the Basque man what he heard, and the Basque man told all the humans, and that is how cultivation spread through the world.

Another part of the legend states that the Basajaun is the protective spirit of the flocks. It shouts in the mountains when a storm approaches so that the shepherds may withdraw their sheep. By lurking around a pen or its surroundings, it keeps the wolves from approaching. The Basajaun's presence is announced by the sheep who, shake and ring the bells around their necks. Thus the shepherds can go to sleep in peace, knowing that during that night or that day the wolves, great enemies of the flocks, will not come to bother them.

Modern-day livestock farmers in Valcarlos and Ondorrola are fully convinced of this creature's existence. In testimony from an interview, an elder stated that he would receive visits from the Basajauns at his homestead, but never knew why. They had not visited him for a long time. Another eyewitness account mentions a sighting of a young Basajaun basking in the sun at the opening to the Mailuxe cave and then added da escription of this creature as being blond.

In June 1993, a group of cave explorers allegedly encountered a Basajaun-like creature in the ruins of a church in the Catalan Pyrenees of Spain. The 'wild man' was described as standing 5 ft. tall and bulky, covered in shaggy hair, and making a sound that resembled an enraged cat. A few months later, two paleontologists were reported to have been jumped by two large, hairy humanoids while conducting research in the Ripoll forests of Gerona Province, Catalonia region of Spain.

LARGE CRAFT, ALIENS, & 'MEN IN BLACK' Encountered in Orange County, California

A large group of Orange County, California kids were playing when they observed a huge saucer-shaped craft with being in the windows. An apparent MIB later asks them about the sighting.

I received the following account:

"In the early 1990s, when I was 7 or 8, I played with 15 other kids. We all were playing hide and seek and I remember we were about to start a new game and 2 kids came running from the back alley and were yelling “Look look look!” They were pointing up. We looked up and there it was a round, very big, and I mean big saucer coming over the apartment building. All of us started to ooh and aww.

Then all that amazement turned into fear as it was about 15 stories above us and it was making a crazy humming sound kind of like an electrical sound. It was a pulsating electric feeling all through our bodies. We all literally started crying at the same time and it wasn’t normal crying, that cry as if we were being killed.

We all ran home terrified of what we just saw. This thing was so low and really big, the city lights lit the thing up, and u could see everything. We could see the windows and in the windows, little people were waving at us. I swear I'm not making this up! There were a lot of people who saw it.

Then the next day we all gathered around the spot we saw this. So we were sitting there talking about what we saw and this guy walked up and asked if we saw weird stuff last night. We told him everything. He wrote it down and then when we were done he told us not to worry about it because what we saw was a weather balloon. Seriously! Oh did I mention the guy was dressed in a black suit. I thought he was FBI because this happened before the movie Men in Black came out. This sighting was way bigger than the Phoenix sighting and I don’t understand why the story didn’t blow up. This happened either in 1992 or 1993 in Orange County, California." L

DID I SEE A 'FAIRY?' Western New York Near Lake Erie

"The creature’s wings were about three inches across. The wings were transparent and rounded at the ends. The body was strangely human-like in shape with dangling legs."
I received the following account:
"On July 2, 2007, I was at my summer cottage near Lake Erie in Western New York State. I was walking my dog out at about 8:00 p.m. The sun was just beginning to go down behind the trees, casting a beautiful fractured light on the front of the house. In the distance, I could hear the sound of my neighbor's ATV driving around the undeveloped wetlands adjacent to my property.

Suddenly my dog began acting erratically, pulling on the leash to go back inside and turning his head toward the sky, looking this way and that. I spoke to him asking what was wrong and looked around to see what was disturbing him, other than the noise in the woods. That is when I saw a peculiar winged creature flying from out of the woods across the front of the house.

The creature’s wings were about three inches across. The wings were transparent and rounded at the ends. If you formed a “C” with your thumb and forefinger and then touched your thumbnails together, you would have a rough estimation of the shape of the rear wings of the creature. The wings were not fluttering like a butterfly or vibrating like a dragonfly, which are two common insects in my yard. The creature was gliding, with perhaps a slight vibration.

I only saw the creature for the length of time it took to fly to the end of the house. Once it got beyond the house into the open area of the front yard, it disappeared. My eyes were on it the whole time.

The body was strangely human-like in shape with legs dangling from below. By the shape of the wings, I assumed it was a four-winged creature. My thought after the being disappeared was, “That must be what people see when they say they have seen a fairy.”

I felt elated seeing this creature. It was nothing I had ever seen before." L

Multiple BIZARRE CREATURES Observed Near Naugatuck, Connecticut

The creature resembled a walking tree and two shades of brown. Its head had a beak like a bird with many protruding teeth and a strange crest-like protrusion on top of its head!

The following account was forwarded to me:

The witness was driving on State Road 68 West near Naugatuck, Connecticut on January 3, 2004, at 10:30 pm. His headlights caught sight of a strange creature running into the woods. He stopped his car and looked at the creature, which resembled a walking tree and two shades of brown. Its head had a beak like a bird with many protruding teeth and a strange crest-like protrusion on top of its head. Terrified the witness quickly drove home.

The following week, while driving on the same hill, the witness saw another strange creature, thin in color and glowing green. The head was like a lizard and on its back it carried something resembling a backpack, which had a transparent canister filled with the glowing green liquid. The creature briefly walked towards the witness up an embankment but stopped and disappeared into the woods, as it did, the strange creature appeared to turn transparent.

Soon after that, the witness was driving up the same hill when his windshield went dark. Something was on the hood obstructing his sight. It was a creature with many white square teeth. He also saw the creature's feet, which appeared sinewy and gray in color. The creature then jumped from the hood and started walking alongside the road. It had extremely long arms that seemed to drag them on the ground. The creature stopped and began to gesture with its long arms.

At this point, the witness noticed a similar creature sitting on the ground staring at the witness. The eyes of the creatures were black the size of a grapefruit and both had large pointy ears. The witness thought that another creature was coming up behind him and looked back when suddenly the area was illuminated by a strong white light. He drove on for about 50 feet and then looked back and again saw the bizarre bird-like creature standing on the road looking at him. It was six ft. tall with square patches of red and yellow on it. The witness eventually drove away without looking back."

NOTE: Oddly enough, I received an email in 2008 that referenced strange small 'leprechaun-like' creatures in the Waterbury, CT area, which I think is not far from the area of this report. There was little information other than these beings were about 3 feet, had long pointy noses, and long arms, and wore short dark-colored tunics. The witness stated that she had seen these beings on several occasions while working at an area dairy farm. I wrote back but have never received a reply. Lon

What Was 'THE FARMER CITY (ILLINOIS) MONSTER?'

Four teens parked at the popular “lover’s lane” area and received the fright of their lives when a huge, hairy humanoid with piercing yellow eyes decided to see what was going on in their car.

"In the Spring of 1970, three sheep had been killed near the town of Farmer City, Illinois. Local officials dismissed it as the work of wild dogs, which have been known to roam the area. In July just outside of town, near Salt Creek, was a ten-acre section of woods and fields that was a popular parking spot for teenagers. Four teens parked at the popular “lover’s lane” area and received the fright of their lives when a huge, hairy humanoid with piercing yellow eyes decided to see what was going on in their car. After the creature was “scared away” by a flashlight, the terrified girls demanded to be taken home. The boys returned to investigate and again encountered the creature; even with windows closed its stench permeated the vehicle. They didn’t stick around. The boys led local police to the area, but a search turned up only a much-flattened area of foliage - thought to be its “nest”.

During the next two weeks, multiple sightings of the creature were made around the area - including one sighting by Robert Hayslip, a Farmer City police officer. A week after this sighting, the creature was spotted 20 miles southwest in Weldon Springs State Park near Clinton, IL - it was a bear 'bathing' in the river but fled to dense woods when it realized it was spotted. Later, a policeman and a conservation officer found tracks along the water‘s edge that definitely did not belong to a bear. They were reportedly very large and human-like.

Days later the creature migrated 15 miles north to Heyworth, IL where it was spotted late at night crouching by the side of a county back road - it jumped and fled when the car slowed to observe it. The startled observer described it as “ape-like”.

Still, seemingly on the move, the beast was, 10 days later witnessed by a team of construction workers outside of Waynesville, IL (10 miles west of Heyworth). It sprinted across the road (from woods to woods) in front of their van near dusk. Another Waynesville resident reported seeing it too within days. That was the last report of the so-called "Farmer City Monster" and one can’t help but wonder if it continued its strange journey northwest across Central Illinois. If it did, it was never reported again."

Genderuwa (from the Java language: 'Genderuwo') is a Javanese myth about a type of jinn or spirit that can manifest into human-like apes, big and stout with reddish black color, his body covered with thick hair. Genderuwa is most widely known in Java, Indonesia. Sundanese people call it "Gandaruwo" and the Javanese people generally call it "Gendruwo".

They are said to dwell in large trees that shade or dampen the corners of deserted buildings. According to the myth, this creature resides in forest areas such as Teak Forest Nature Reserve Danalaya, Slogohimo district, and the White Weak, Purwosari, Girimulyo in Kulon Progo.

This entity is believed to communicate and make direct contact with humans. Various legends say that Genderuwo can change the appearance of its physical form to follow someone or to entice people. The Genderuwo creature, believed to be idle and dissolute, tends to tease people, especially women and children. Genderuwo is sometimes happy slapping a woman's rump, caressing her body while she sleeps, or even switching women’s undergarments to others. Genderuwo occasionally appears in the form of furry little creatures that can grow in an instant. Genderuwo also likes to throw stones at people’s houses at night. The Genderuwo is known to tempt lonely wives when husbands leave or those that become widowed. Sometimes, Genderuwo has sexual relationships with these women to impregnate them and produce more Genderuwo.

According to legend, The Genderuwo has a very strong ability to attract women. Genderuwo's sexual game is said to be unusual and women feel often satisfied and extend extraordinary favors. Genderuwos have very strong libidos and possess seduction skills far superior to men.

There is a legend that states Genderuwo can enter and remain happy in the womb of a woman if an intimate relationship forms between the woman and the Genderuwo and that the desire never wanes until one dies...which is usually the woman. At that point, the Genderuwo moves on to his next sexual conquest. There is little a woman can do to deter the advances of this creature.

The Genderuwa myth has been widely used in many modern entertainment media forms, mainly in horror films from Indonesia and Malaysia where Javanese communities still practice the beliefs and culture of Java. An Indonesian man who seems to possess an unusual knack for seducing women of all ages is seen as a Genderuwa and considered to be touched by evil and capable of committing horrible acts.

THE VERSAILLES TIME-SLIP: GHOSTS OF PETIT TRIANON

Time travel is supposedly the stuff of science fiction and fantasy, but if the account of two women in the first years of the 20th century is to be believed, then time travel is not only possible, but it can happen spontaneously and without warning.

The year was 1901, and a pair of friends, 55-year-old Anne Moberly and 38-year-old Eleanor Jourdain, were on holiday in France. They were both teachers at St. Hugh's College in Oxford. Moberly was in fact the principal there, and Jourdain would become her successor fourteen years later. The two set out to see the vast Palace of Versailles, the center of political power in France until the French Revolution in 1789. They turned to visit the Petit Trianon, a small chateau on the grounds given by Louis XVI to his 19-year-old wife, Marie Antoinette, as a private retreat for her personal use.

Moberly and Jourdain got a bit lost searching for the chateau, and it was during this interlude that they made history, even if only in some small way. They encountered several people in 1789 period attire, carrying out period activities, and passed a handful of structures that had not existed since 1789. Their unexpected visit to 112 years in the past culminated with an encounter with Marie Antoinette herself, sketching on the grounds of her chateau.

Mrs. Jourdain wrote: "Everything suddenly looked unnatural, therefore unpleasant; even the trees seemed to become flat and lifeless like wood worked in tapestry. There were no effects of light and shade, and no wind stirred the trees."

They reached the edge of a wood, close to the Temple de l'Amour, and came across a man seated beside a garden kiosk, wearing a cloak and a large shady hat. According to Moberly, his appearance was "most repulsive... its expression odious. His complexion was dark and rough."

Jourdain noted "The man slowly turned his face, which was marked by smallpox; his complexion was very dark. The expression was evil and yet unseeing, and though I did not feel that he was looking particularly at us, I felt a repugnance to going past him.

A man later described as "tall... with large dark eyes, and crisp curling black hair under a large sombrero hat" came up to them, and showed them the way to the Petit Trianon.

After crossing a bridge, they reached the gardens in front of the palace, and Moberly noticed a lady sketching on the grass who looked at them. She later described what she saw in great detail: "The lady was wearing a light summer dress, on her head was a shady white hat, and she had lots of fair hair." Moberly thought she was a tourist at first, but the dress appeared to be old-fashioned. Moberly came to believe that the lady was Marie Antoinette. Jourdain however did not see the lady.

After this, they were directed round to the entrance and joined a party of other visitors. The strange feelings and visions of the past had vanished.

It was many months before the women told of their strange encounters. Visiting Versailles sometime later, the women were not able to find the landmarks that they had noticed during the incident. During their research, they thought they recognized the man by the kiosk as the Comte de Vaudreuil, a friend of Marie Antoinette, who herself had been thought to have been seen by Moberly.

Within months they'd published their account in a book called 'An Adventure' later published as The Ghosts Of Trianon[image error] and as they were both respected academics who did not desire bizarre publicity, they published it under pseudonyms. Their experience became variously known as the Versailles Time Slip, the Ghosts of Trianon, or the Moberly-Jourdain Incident; and it has intrigued researchers, historians, and enthusiasts of the paranormal ever since.

Both women are reported to have had many paranormal experiences before and after their adventure. In one of them, Moberly claimed to have seen in the Louvre in 1914 an apparition of the Roman emperor Constantine, a man of unusual height wearing a gold crown and a toga; he was not observed by anybody else. During the First World War Jourdain, the dominant personality of the pair and who had succeeded as Principal of St. Hugh's, became convinced that a German spy was hiding in the college. After developing increasingly autocratic behaviour, she died suddenly in 1924 in the middle of an academic scandal over her leadership of the college, her conduct having provoked mass resignations of academic staff. Moberly died in 1937.

Did Charlotte Anne Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain actually walk through a hole in time and experience 16th-century France? Skeptics have brought up the possibility that the two women might have experienced a shared delusion or perhaps even wandered into a costume party or the rehearsal for an outdoor play. In so many cases of strange and inexplicable phenomena being reported, we hear that the witness or witnesses were people of great character or scientific credibility, and so it's often considered implausible that they could be mistaken or make the story up. The Versailles Time Slip is clearly one such case.

Writer Nell Rose observed in Time Travel - Anne Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain - The Ghost of Versailles:

"They were not liars, and both ladies had nothing to gain by making up this story. In fact, it could go a long way to ruining their reputation.

Frequently I'll hear something along the lines of "My Uncle Bob was a very trustworthy and honest man who would never make something up, therefore you should accept his ghost experience as a fact." Moberly and Jourdain's position as college teachers also gilds them with a cloak of authority, similar to that given to pilots or astronauts who see UFOs. Certainly, a pilot's perception of a UFO cannot be mistaken, and certainly, college teachers' perception of going back in time must have therefore happened as they thought. Well, not so much. It's not necessary to suggest that Reliable Uncle Bob must have been a liar for either his own perception to have been mistaken or for the version of the story that finally made it down to you to have been altered. Neither is it necessary to cast doubt on Moberly and Jourdain's academic status to suggest that the story we have in the annals of urban legend does not reflect a literal time-travel event that must have happened exactly as reported. Human brains are fallible — including Uncle Bob, pilots, and including academics.

Two basic explanations have been put forth by previous researchers, which by now have been watered down and popularized into the following: First, that they accidentally wandered into a historical reenactment; and second, that they had a sort of shared delusion. But to put these two explanations into proper perspective, we need to go back to see who originally proposed them and why, and what hidden details of the story prompted them. And this is the point at which the Versailles Time Slip goes from an interesting anecdote to an all-out strange-fest.

St. Hugh's College was founded in 1886 by Elizabeth Wordsworth as an all-woman college at Oxford, and the consensus among researchers suggests that Moberly and Jourdain's relationship was romantic as well as professional. They were at least roommates. One of the earliest and most popular critiques of An Adventure came in 1957 from their former student Lucille Iremonger in her prodigiously-entitled book Ghosts of Versailles[image error] Iremonger insinuated that both women even had frequent affairs with students of the college. She spent much time delving into the nature of their relationship and basically concluded that their adventure was a folie a deux, a madness of two. They had, she suggested, been so distracted by their relationship that they had merely misinterpreted ordinary people and objects for things from 1789, and became so obsessed with proving their story that they'd even convinced themselves of the reality of what had happened. Iremonger's charge gradually became softened over the years into a "shared delusion".

A fourth edition of An Adventure was printed in 1955, this time with a preface written by art historian Joan Evans, who was Jourdain's literary executor, and like Iremonger, a former student. But unlike the hostile Iremonger, Evans tended to defend Moberly and Jourdain's account of what happened as a literal event. She felt compelled to deflect popular conjecture that they'd had some sort of strange lesbian romance-induced delusion. So Evans, in a 1976 article for Encounter magazine, put forth the suggestion that the two women had simply walked unknowingly into a historical recreation, in which actors were lounging about in period attire. Evans went so far as to research such recreations but did not find such an event that would have coincided with the 1901 visit.

Evans turned to the 1965 biography of the French artist Robert de Montesquiou. Biographer Philippe Jullian noted that de Montesquiou had lived in a house at Versailles and was noted for his Tableaux Vivant performances, in which gay Parisian men performed the roles of both men and women; thus, the Marie Antoinette seen by Moberly and Jourdain was a transvestite. Though no evidence survives that indicates de Montesquiou may have actually thrown such an event in 1901, Jullian's suggestion was good enough for Evans; and ever since her article, the transvestite historical recreation has been reported and re-reported as one of the most likely explanations for the Versailles Time Slip. They say truth is stranger than fiction, but the rationales for fringe claims can often be even stranger.

As usual, the best way to get a handle on what probably actually happened is to brush aside all ex post facto conjecture and go back to the original sources. One thing I like to do since I've never visited Versailles, is to pull it up on Google Earth and look at all the pictures of it I can find. The first thing one finds is that the grounds of Versailles are immense, about 3.5 kilometers from end to end. To get to the Petit Trianon, you have to cross whole square kilometers of gardens, lakes, little hamlets, and chateaus. Part of Moberly and Jourdain's proof is that upon returning a few years later, they couldn't find some of the objects they'd witnessed, most notably a kiosk and a footbridge. When they sent their story to England's Society for Psychical Research, a sometimes-skeptical, sometimes-credulous association of enthusiasts of the paranormal, the Society was unimpressed. Part of what the Society noted was that Moberly and Jourdain had themselves stated that they'd been lost; and as footbridges and kiosks of various descriptions abound on the vast grounds of Versailles, there was almost nothing to go on and nothing surprising about their report.

In their published 1950 report of what they'd determined many years before, the Society noted a few other points that authors like Iremonger tore into like fresh meat. One was that when they reviewed the several editions of An Adventure, they found it had expanded notably each time. Moreover, it was three months after the incident before the women had even sat down to compare notes on what they'd witnessed; whereas at the time of their visit, neither woman had suspected anything unusual even took place! In the second edition of An Adventure, the women explained that a full three months after they visited Versailles, Moberly happened to mention the sketching woman they saw. Jourdain didn't remember any such thing. As they talked, it turned out that Moberly didn't remember hardly anything that Jourdain did either. These were all minor details like a woman shaking out a cloth out a window, two green-jacketed gardeners at work, and a sinister-looking man sitting under a garden kiosk. It was only after much discussion, note-sharing, and historical research that Moberly and Jourdain came up with the period as 1789 and assigned identities to a few of the characters they saw, including Marie Antoinette herself as the lady sketching on the lawn.

Upon reviewing the case as told in the women's own words, the Society for Psychical Research concluded that the evidence of anything unusual having actually happened was insufficient to justify further study. Their report's author, W.H. Salter, pointed out that the embellished versions of the tale published in later editions were written much later than the women had initially claimed, perhaps as long as five years later; and only after the women had made several returns trips to Versailles to study the landmarks further.

The principal authors who have written about this story seem to agree that there was probably no conscious effort at deception by Moberly and Jourdain, only a firm belief in the reality of their perception and a desire to present their story in as convincing a way as possible. They even went so far as to include a chapter they called "A Rêverie", an imaginary account of Marie Antoinette's own meditations, in which she observed two strangers walk past while she was sitting there sketching, amidst all the other people and things they reported. This chapter jumps out as particularly bizarre and moves An Adventure from the realm of reporting into that of fantasy fiction."
