Beyond Getting Stuff Done

I write a lot for my clients. When I was out of college I took my freelance projects seriously. Read up. Planned well. Wrote in a natural pace. But as I got better, I tended to work fast, but the quality suffered. Reading became work. Didn’t really enjoy reading and writing.

Now it is all about getting things done.

But I hardly remember the stuff I wrote.

Why didn’t I remember the work.  But those books and writing I wrote with passion are fresh in my head.

This is one of the reason I stopped publishing mindlessly. Yes, I have two manuscripts ready for publication, but I have been slowly contemplating on changing many aspects of the book.  Real satisfaction is when you do good work. No amount of money should sway you away from it. #books #writing

Building a personal brand in college is not only a way to showcase your skills and interests, but also a valuable strategy to prepare for your future career. A personal brand is a combination of your identity, values, strengths, and goals that you communicate to others through various platforms and channels. By creating and maintaining a consistent and authentic personal brand, you can:

Stand out from the crowd and differentiate yourself from other students and graduatesAttract opportunities that align with your passions and aspirationsBuild a network of connections and relationships that can support your professional growthDemonstrate your credibility and expertise in your chosen field or industryIncrease your confidence and self-awareness

To build a personal brand in college, you need to:

Define your purpose and vision: What are you passionate about? What are your goals and values? What makes you unique?

Identify your target audience: Who do you want to reach and influence? What are their needs and expectations? How can you provide value to them?

Choose your platforms and channels: Where do you want to showcase your personal brand? How do you want to communicate with your audience? What are the best tools and methods for your message?

Create and share relevant content: What do you want to say and show? How can you express your personality and voice? How can you engage and interact with your audience?

Tricks and Tips I Learned This WeekOne tip that actually helped me a lot on content creation is not to look at the numbers or competitors.Just enjoy making videos or writing. Do it for three months. This is like a test to see if you can really sustain in the content creation business for a decade or so. Weekly Newsletter- 8-4-2023

Greetings to all. If you are reading this, then you have either subscribed to my newsletter at some point or you are my friend, and I didn’t care to ask for permission to send you my newsletter. Well, it is insane out there. What do you mean? The amount of information that is available is so mind-boggling, that you can drown in it. But I am here to save you.

This is me going insane to bring you sane news on great topics. It will be useful, I promise. Every week on Saturday, I will let you know what I am reading, so that you can read it. What I am doing, my favourite blog posts of the week, YouTube videos, and, of course, updates about my startup( insider’s view of the gut wrenching business side of it.) So let’s get started!

What am I reading?

I am reading Swan Song by Robert McCarhon. I have completed around 20 percent of the book. I’m hoping to complete this book by this week. Below is the Goodreads summary of the book.

An ancient evil roams the desolate landscape of an America ravaged by nuclear war. He is the Man with the Scarlet Eye, a malevolent force that feeds on the dark desires of the countless followers he has gathered into his service. His only desire is to find a special child named Swan and destroy her.

What course am I presently taking up?Coursera’s Google UX/UI certification. Every year I have promised myself to learn a high paying skill. This seemed to be the most attractive, so started the course. In case you are wondering, I paid for this. Yes, I paid almost $25 for this for three months.I have completed module two. I’m hoping to complete the course soon.DRH update

It is just in the beginning stages. In the past six months, it brought in a revenue of 850 $. Hoping to grow to 10,000 dollars by the year’s end. And I will share my journey, my strategies, and, of course, all the dumb decisions I will make. But hey, how else do you learn.

Tricks and Tips I Learned This WeekI have learned that you can actually reduce the decimal places in Excel with a simple formula called,=(ROUND, A, 0)

The syntax for the ROUND function is ROUND(number or the cell name, decimal places), where number is the number you want to round, and decimal places is the number of decimal places you want to round to.  This is pretty basic stuff, but useful. This comes in handy when you have to complete CO-PO. (You will know what I mean if you are a professor.)

Henry Howard- Summary of his life for NET/SET

Hi everyone, welcome back to my blog where I share my passion for literature and history. Today I want to write about Henry Howard and his works.

Henry Howard was a poet who lived in the 16th century, during the reign of Henry VIII. He was also known as the Earl of Surrey, a title he inherited from his father, the Duke of Norfolk.

Henry Howard was one of the first English poets to introduce the styles and metres of the Italian humanist poets, such as Petrarch and Dante. He is credited with developing the Shakespearean form of the sonnet, which consists of three quatrains and a couplet, rhyming abab cdcd efef gg.

He wrote many love poems and elegies, some of which were addressed to his wife, Lady Frances de Vere, or to his friend and cousin, Anne Boleyn.

Henry Howard was also a translator and a scholar. He translated two books of Virgil’s Aeneid into English blank verse, a form that he also introduced to English poetry. Blank verse is unrhymed iambic pentameter, which means it has ten syllables per line with a stress on every second syllable. He also translated some Psalms and Ecclesiastes from the Bible.

Henry Howard had an eventful life as a soldier and a courtier. He was involved in many political intrigues and conflicts, as he was related to some of the most powerful and controversial figures of his time. He was a childhood companion to Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Richmond, who was Henry VIII’s illegitimate son.

He was also a first cousin to Anne Boleyn, who became Henry VIII’s second wife and was later executed for treason. Henry Howard himself was accused of treason by his enemies at court and was executed in 1547, shortly before Henry VIII’s death.

Henry Howard’s poetry is remarkable for its elegance, sophistication, and emotion. He influenced many later poets, such as Edmund Spenser, Philip Sidney, and William Shakespeare. His works are collected in Tottel’s Miscellany (1557), which is one of the first printed anthologies of English poetry.

I hope you enjoyed this brief introduction to Henry Howard and his works. If you want to read more about him and his poems, you can check out these websites:

Simoquin prophesies Summary and Review

Simoquin Prophecies summarySamit Basu has written a story which is a mix of traditional western fantasy with eastern myths. The story revolves around important characters like Asvin, Kirin, Spikes, Mantric, Maya, Silver Dagger and also Chief Civilian of Kol. Before going into to the story it is imperative to understand the fantasy world. In the ancient times Danh-Gem a powerful evil Lord wrecked havoc in the world. At that time the Rakshases, Trolls, Werewolfs, dragons, and Vanars all supported Danh-Gem until his eventual fall. But Danh-Gem promised he would return. The other magical beings at the time of Danh-Gem were the ravians. Their presence heighted the magical activity causes the rise of the dragons, and other dark creatures. But once they left the magic quickly dissipated- this happens after Danh-Gem’s defeat. The story begins with Asvin, the civilian prince, who sets out on a adventure with many mighty men of the palace, but the mighty men are not good as he suspected, but rather murderers. They try to murder him but he escapes, and meets the chief Civilian who is concerned with the rising magical activity around the country. This is when the prophecy of Simoquin in discussed. According to the prophecy Danh -Gem would return in the future, and so a hero will emerge to stop him. The Chief Civilian guesses that he would be the prophesied hero to stop the return of Danh-Gem.On the other hand during this time Kirin comes to know that he has some mysterious powers. Kirin and Maya are good friends, and Kirin reveals to Maya that he is a ravian and that he was a stone for 200 years, until Spikes found him who is a pashan. Kirin wants to know more about himself, so he goes to the library to get his hands on the untranslatable books. But suddenly he understands the launguage that those books were written in.He takes some books from the library, and he goes on the journey with Maya, Asvin, and spikes. But once in the forest, he has an encounter with the book, and the book introduces itself as Narak, the demon hunter who defeated Danh-Gem in the ancient battle. He tells that he is his (Kirin’s father). And he defeated Danh-Gem and now his son would defeat him. Narak asks Kirin to leave Maya and Asvin along with Spikes to join the followers of Danh-Gem to help bring Danh-Gem back so he would be able to defeat him once again. With great doubt Kirin along with Spikes finds Bali, the leader of the Vanar leaving Asvin and the group.Maya along with Asvin travel with other fellow people to find the Mantric. Mantric is a powerful wizard and he is the father of Maya. Asvin is trained on various skills, and sent on many great expeditions so that he would become ready to fight against Danh-Gem when he returns back.Kirin and Spikes act in favour of the vanar, and show their sincerity in bringing back dark Lord. However Kirin is guided by the book on various stages to get some ancient artifacts that Narak promises will help Kirin defeat the long run.Kirin comes to understand the way to bring Danh-Gem by translating another book which is written in ravian. To bring back Danh-Gem they are in need of 5 objects, so the rest of the books explores the ways in which those 5 objects were obtained by Bali and his comarades. On the other hand Asvin and his company are trying to stop Bali and his company for possessing the 5 objects./“First, a claw from the hand of the son of Katar, lord of pashans, my most faithful servant and adviser. For I will unite the pashans again. Second, the most precious gem the humans own. For the strongest passion the humans feel is greed, and through greed and power-lust will I rule their hearts, minds and lands.
Third, a jinn-lamp from the sands of the west. For jinns, ifrits and rakshases are my siblings, and their world is my world.
Fourth, the iron crown of the asurs. For when the asurs are united, nothing can stand before them.
Fifth, and most important, bring me the Gauntlet of Tatsu, that I may ride the dragons again.”
Excerpt From: Samit Basu. “The Simoqin Prophecies: Part One of the GameWorld Trilogy”. Apple Books.Asvin and his company go through magical mirrors in search of the Gauntlet of Tatsu. In the mountain Asvin tells about his love for Maya, and Kirin watches them with jealousy for he too loved Maya. But Bali is betrayed and left behind by Kirin, and he goes to resurect Danh-hem on the Circle of darkness. Kirin waits with the sword of shadows that Naruk had given him to slaughter the dark Lord when he comes to power. On the Altar all the five objects are placed, and Danh-Gem returns, and when Kirin tries to strike him with the Shadow Sword it becomes clear that Danh-Gem could not be destroyed. In the climax, Danh-Gem explains his diabolical plan and a flashback is narrated by him.“The story begins centuries ago when a young rakshas, hunting in Vrihataranya, saw a shining light a little distance away, and went closer to look. When I reached the place where I had seen the flash of light, I found a young man lying on the ground. I was hungry, and charged at him in tiger-form, but even though he could not have seen me, he sprang up and out of the way.”
“ong I chased him, but he was quick, and he had mysterious powers. He brought branches crashing down on my head – sometimes he flung me back by just pointing at me. Try as I might, I could not catch him. I was fascinated – I wanted to learn these new tricks. I chased him deep into the forest and he was lost. I knew he could be no human, that he was not of this world. I took human form, spoke to him and befriended him.
His name was Narak, and he was a ravian. A low-caste apprentice who had been sent from the world the ravians were planning to leave, to see if this one was inhabitable. As we walked through the jungle, I questioned him skillfully – he revealed all he knew about the ravians and their customs.
I knew right then that a new power was going to enter our world, a power that would change the world even if it did not seek to dominate it. And I was worried. I killed Narak and ate him, and then took his form. Days later, when more ravians came to our world, they found me. I told them[…]”
Excerpt From: Samit Basu. “The Simoqin Prophecies: Part One of the GameWorld Trilogy”. Apple Books. This is how he befriended the ravians.“Their magic in particular amazed me, and I decided to learn it. My toys, made with rakshas magic, fascinated them, and they paid me good money, money which I put to good use. And then, one day, I saw the princess Isara. I forgot everything else, and was consumed with love. I tried to abduct her in rakshas form, and she defeated me with magic but did not kill me. I returned to Asroye with a new mission in life – I resolved to win her hand. I resolved to be worthy of her.
My family was powerful amongst rakshases even then. In those years, we were waging war against the armies of Ventelot, who were trying to clear Vrihataranya to set up their foolish cities. As my power grew, so did our might. I learnt all about politics and war from ravian books, and put my new knowledge to good use. We began to expand our territory, and our power grew. Slowly, as they learnt to look beyond their own territories and immediate needs, rakshases from all over the world began to flock under my banner.”

Excerpt From: Samit Basu. “The Simoqin Prophecies: Part One of the GameWorld Trilogy”. Apple Books.“With the asurs, we rakshases conquered Imokoi and set up a rakshas kingdom there. I learnt the secret of pashan birth, and I made the asurs build giant furnaces in Imokoi. There I raised my elite pashan soldiers, and was delighted by their strength and cunning. ”Excerpt From: Samit Basu. “The Simoqin Prophecies: Part One of the GameWorld Trilogy”. Apple Books.“I found allies in Artaxerxia and Skuanmark – I fanned the age-old hatred that lay between these two kingdoms and Avranti and Ventelot, and used their armies to overrun Elaken and Ventelot. But I had no intention of harming the ravians. Neither did I attack Kol then, for they already had the favour of the ravians. Lord Simoqin used to travel to Kol often, and the power of the spellbinders was stabilized by his gift, the Heart of Magic.”Excerpt From: Samit Basu. “The Simoqin Prophecies: Part One of the GameWorld Trilogy”. Apple Books.Following this it becomes apparent that Danh-Gem acted as Narak, but he was the father of Kirin. And Kirin was born for the Ravian princess, and Danh-Gem a Raskhases. But Danh-Gem knew he could not defeat the Ravians, and he knew they would leave the world. So he waited binding his time to return to power.“nitially. But then the idea was born in my head – why not make my own prophecy true? If the ravians fought me, I would disappear, I would return when they had gone. The Prophecy, if it were made known throughout the lands, would ensure that my followers remembered me when I returned from hiding, and that they would be ready to obey my commands. I wanted the ravians to read what I had written, for only then would my brother be avenged. So, as Narak, I returned to Asroye, with Simoqin. The fool was barely alive, and quite mad. He kept on babbling about some dream he had seen, of a mirror and a hero. He repeated this to Isara, and died.”
Excerpt From: Samit Basu. “The Simoqin Prophecies: Part One of the GameWorld Trilogy”. Apple Books.“You will decide your own destiny from here, Kirin. You are my heir, the heir of Danh-Gem, the heir of Isara, and probably the greatest power alive on this earth. Soon I will wake your companions. The choices before you are very simple. You may leave, or you may stay. ”Excerpt From: Samit Basu. “The Simoqin Prophecies: Part One of the GameWorld Trilogy”. Apple Books. At the end Danh-Gem gives him a choice. He tells either he can leave or get the power for himself. Kirin once again thinking about Maya decides to keep the power. He is the master of the dragons, and Danh-Gem son Kirin had returned to power. The chief, Maya, Asvin and Mantric can feel the return of Danh-Gem’s return.Critical Aspects:Okay this is long novel, but the similarities are manyKirin-sounds like Skywalker in Star WarsAsvin- Harry Potter or a little like Don QuixoteMaya- Hermonie from Harry PotterSpikes- the side kickMantric-Gandalf from Lord of the Rings or Dumbeldore( a powerful wizard)Danh-Gem- Lord Voldemort( A book!) or RavanaSo this is a story with a mix of both western and eastern ideas. Even Vencelot is a reference to Camelot.I will give 3.5/5 for the world building. Hoping to read the next book in the series.

How do I deal with Depression?

Everybody was happily celebrating their Chris friend. They bought gifts for each other, complemented them, And just were their jolly selves. But a nagging sense of despondence kept me wondering. Do I even have any true friends? It was like I didn’t matter anymore. This has been occurring quite often. Most of them would only text me or talk to me if they are in need of some help. Otherwise, I do not exist for them” this is how my brain keeps narrating a tale to me.

But I am cool with that, my ultra-introverted self can survive when I am alone. But it is not a good feeling… The more I work, the more risks I take, and I am becoming lonelier. It is like my vision is not compatible with the others around me. Right after my dad passed away something snapped inside my head. I promised I would never trust people because everyone is going to leave. Of course, as a kid this made sense. But as college came along, this nagged me a lot. Even though I had friends the doomsday expectation lingered on. Eventually, this came true, as my one-sided love for a girl turned out to be devastating. This once again made me shut myself out from others more. I knew trusting or hoping will only come crashing along. This too happened. In my master’s, I thought I was in love, with a very unlikely girl, in fact, I am still in love with her, but I am completely helpless now. How did this relationship turn out? Terrible. If from the beginning she rejected me then it wouldn’t have mattered. She did like me, then proceeded to hate me more than all the people on planet earth. That I have been enduring this pain for over 8 years now. By this time I knew I was not likely to be liked by girls. (I would be of help to them from an examination point of view, but romance and love were directly thrown into the friend zone without further embarrassment.)

I feel that they would assume that I would be a boring bloke which I am not. But then I have been building a complex due to this. I am very likely to fall into depression when it comes to people. But I am aware of these thoughts running in my head. Writing clarifies how I really feel. Writing poetry make me come out of depression. I want to express, that this is the way to come out of the mental rut. So how to deal with depression

Be aware of triggers that cause depressionAccept realityShare with others or express your anguish in some wayIf nothing works then get help from a mental health professional.

What happened to us?

I’ve been giving a kind of motivational talk to school students for around four years. But recently I have been making a statement(which was not part of the original script) that as kids we have wild, and ambitious goals, but when we grow up we seem to be losing confidence in who we are. As a kid we scream that we want to be a doctor, scientists, in the army…and many more. But as we grow up we narrow down the choices. We seem to accept reality, and we slowly give up on all the wild ideas we had in our lives. By 12th grade, we are unsure about the course we have to take, and when we join college, we don’t know what we should do with our lives…we are like programmed rats, trying to be the best performing rat in an industry.

Then it dawned on me. I have become like everyone. Limiting myself… Not daring enough! My wild plans were all put to rest, blaming it on time, fate, and all other things. I wanted to be a world-class Fiction writer dealing with masterpieces. Shakespeare’s spirit possessed me in my youth! Alas, now I am a hack writer(Writing, but not what I want to write) I make little money because with money comes security. When you have no one depending on you, you can throw away all the cultural traps and focus on one bloody thing you want to do in your life. But there are bills to pay, people to please, cultural timeline to handle… it is a farce if you are ever wondering.

I think it would do our spirits some good if we could bring back that youthful confidence. That wild grit, that boldness to go after those mountain tops. But I know tomorrow morning we all have to punch in on time… life happens…but still try giving your wild dream some time… see where it takes you… I will try of course.. I won’t regret failing but surely I will regret not trying.

Lakewood- A Review

Beginning

Lakewood is not a typical novel. It has an uncanny way of dealing with a serious theme. The novel is set in the US, and it is told from the point of view of Lena. a young woman who is struggling not only to care for her mother but also to pay off her student loan. Lena shows interest in the Lakewood project, which is looking for test subjects for some kind of experiment, but the compensation provided by the project is enormous. The rest of the story is about the consequences of the projects, as the projects are not what everybody thinks. It is more sinister in nature.

Narration

The narrative voice of Lena is that of a typical college student. The voice keeps the tension high throughout the story. Sometimes there is a feeling of not knowing what has really happened, but it is not that straightforward.

Characters

The grandmother, mother, and Lena characters are well-developed. The mother’s dementia gives clues about the plot, but Dr. Lisa, involved in the project, comes out like an artificial character. Literariness Except for a few, Lakewood does not have a high literacy rate. There is not much going on with the writing. The high ideals of great fiction are missing in this work.

 Critical Observation

Humans have always been involved in testing, but only humans who are considered inferior to the patriarchal hegemony have been considered for human trials. It is sad and painful to see governments conduct tests on black people for such a long time. The novel tries to deal with this issue. The death of black people in testing is not even regretted; they are nothing more than lab mice. Such unlawful testing might be happening even today. If they are, then they must be stopped!

Final Verdict: I would give it around 3.5/5. The theme is interesting, but the story could have been better.
