Adi��s con el coraz��n. Adi��s padre

Hola a todos:

Algunos puede que record��is que el martes pasado publiqu�� un post sobre la pr��stata, y la importancia de hacerse chequeos (para los hombres y sus parejas/parientes). Os comentaba el caso de mi padre, que estaba enfermo de c��ncer de pr��stata en un estad��o avanzado.

Por desgracias, y como algunos ya sabr��is, mi padre falleci�� el jueves. Hab��a empeorado mucho desde antes de Navidades y las cosas aceleraron bastante.

Por desgracia no tengo un scanner aqu�� y adem��s las fotos nunca se me han dado muy bien (a mi padre tampoco) pero compartir una imagen de los buenos tiempos. Quiz��s escriba m��s sobre ��l en alg��n momento. Solo deciros que era de Paradaseca, Ourense (en Galicia, el Nororeste de Espa��a) y le gustaba mucho su tierra aunque hab��a pasado la mayor parte de su vida adulta en Barcelona (que tambi��n le gustaba bastante). Le gustaba contar historias y siempre ten��a un corrillo de gente a su alrededor escuchando.

De peque��o quer��a ser piloto de aviaci��n, pero se qued�� en conductor y llev�� autocares durante muchos a��os. No le gustaban nada los hospitales y no entendi�� nunca como pude hacerme m��dico (aunque estaba orgulloso). Le gustaba mucho el ciclismo y el f��tbol, y era del Celta de Vigo primero, y del F��tbol Club Barcelona despu��s.

Every Time I Say Goodbye. Goodbye Dad.

Hi all:

I had another post prepared for today but I’ve decided to leave it for next week.

As some of you might remember, my post last Tuesday was about prostate cancer and trying to impress on everybody (men and their partners, loved ones) the importance of regular check-ups, particularly at a certain age. I mentioned my Dad’s case. Thanks to everybody for the support and comments. Some people who might have visited the post later on during the week will already know that unfortunately my father (Ubaldo) died last Thursday.

I don’t have a scanner here so the picture is not very good (and also, like my father, I’ve never been any good at pictures), but just wanted to share something.

I might tell you more things about him at some point (he liked to tell stories and wherever he went he’d always be the one people would father around listening to his stories). He wanted to be a pilot but ended up driving coaches most of his life. He loved cycling and football, and he was a fan of Celta de Vigo first and Football Club Barcelona, second. He hated hospitals and could never understand how I became a doctor (although he was proud of it). And he was from Paradaseca, Ourense (in Galicia, North of Spain) although he spent most of his adult life in Barcelona.

Se��ores, ��le est��n prestando atenci��n a su pr��stata?

Mi post hoy es un poco distinto a lo usual. Aunque soy m��dico (psiquiatra para ser m��s precisa) cre�� el blog para hablar de mis libros y de temas varios. Lo cierto es que hay muchas p��ginas y organizaciones que se dedican a la informaci��n m��dica y de salud y que lo hacen muy bien. Y desde luego, siempre est�� vuestro m��dicos y servicios sanitarios.

Lo que me ha hecho pensar en la pr��stata es algo personal. A mi padre le diagnosticaron un c��ncer de pr��stata en estadio 4 (con met��stasis ��seas) en Noviembre del 2013. De hecho ��l nunca present�� s��ntomas locales (que no es raro) y solo dolores muy inespec��ficos. Yo ��siempre recuerdo la clase en que el profesor de Urolog��a nos habl�� de la pr��stata de una forma muy po��tica. “En el oto��o de la vida, cuando todo se marchita, se seca y se reduce, hay un ��rgano que se desarrolla y florece, la pr��stata del hombre.” Su ense��anza sobre el tema era que en cualquier hombre mayor de 50 a��os, viniera por lo que viniera a la consulta, hab��a que examinar la pr��stata. En aquella ��poca eso era un procedimiento bastante invasivo. (“Si no metes el dedo, metes la pata” fue su cita que no se me ha olvidado nunca.) Hoy en d��a los tests sangu��neos (el PSA) aunque no espec��fico al 100% puede crear un alto ��ndice de sospecha.

As�� que no lo dej��is pasar, si ten��is cierta edad, con o sin s��ntomas, preguntad, y que os hagan un chequeo.

La lista de s��ntomas:

No todo el mundo tiene s��ntomas de c��ncer de pr��stata. Muchas veces los signos de c��ncer de pr��stata son detectados por primera vez por un m��dico durante una revisi��n de rutina.

Sin embargo, algunos hombres tendr��n cambios en la funci��n urinaria o sexual que podr��an indicar la presencia de c��ncer de pr��stata. Estos s��ntomas incluyen:

Necesidad de orinar frecuentemente, especialmente por la noche

Dificultad para comenzar a orinar o retener la orina

Flujo de orina d��bil o interrumpido

Micci��n dolorosa o con ardor

Dificultad para tener una erecci��n

Eyaculaci��n dolorosa

Sangre en la orina o el semen

Dolor o rigidez frecuente en la regi��n lumbar, las caderas o la parte superior de los muslos

Usted deber�� consultar a su m��dico si tiene cualquiera de los s��ntomas indicados anteriormente.

A los hombres con estos s��ntomas se les har��n pruebas y an��lisis minuciosos para determinar la causa subyacente. Estos s��ntomas tambi��n pueden indicar la presencia de otras enfermedades o trastornos benignos, tales como HPB (hipertrofia prost��tica benigna) o prostatitis. Gentlemen, are you paying attention to your prostates?

This is not a topic I tend to talk about usually. I’m a doctor, a psychiatrist to be more precise, but I started the blog to talk about writing and miscellaneous topics, rather than to provide medical advice (there are many sites that offer that and of course, you should always be guided by your doctor and health professionals).

Due to personal circumstances I’ve been thinking about prostate cancer. My Dad was diagnosed with stage 4 of prostate cancer in November 2013 (it had already spread to the bones by the time it was diagnosed). He’d never presented with any localised symptoms at prostate level (no urinary symptoms) and other symptoms were very unspecific aches and pains…I remember the class when the urology professor discussed that topic. ‘In the autumn of life when everything decays and shrinks, in men there is an organ that grows and flowers, the prostate’. And his advice was that any men over 50 should be checked. Although at the time tests were quite invasive, these days blood tests (PSA), although not 100%, can raise a high suspicion.

Not everyone experiences symptoms of prostate cancer. Many times, signs of prostate cancer are first detected by a doctor during a routine check-up.

Some men, however, will experience changes in urinary or sexual function that might indicate the presence of prostate cancer. These symptoms include:

 

A need to urinate frequently, especially at night

Difficulty starting urination or holding back urine

Weak or interrupted flow of urine

Painful or burning urination

Difficulty in having an erection

Painful ejaculation

Blood in urine or semen

Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs

You should consult with your doctor if you experience any of the symptoms above.

 

Because these symptoms can also indicate the presence of other diseases or disorders, such as BPH (Benign Prostate Hypertrophy) or prostatitis, men will undergo a thorough work-up to determine the underlying cause. Ask, pester, don’t just let it go or think it’s nothing. It’s better if the doctors tell you that. There are lots of treatments and it’s always best to put your minds at rest.

As all of you who’ve been reading me for a while know well, I published my first audiobook last year (Escaping Psychiatry)��and I’m hoping to get some of my other books into audio format. I published a post about ACX and thanks to that post I got chatting with other authors who’re also trying the route of the audiobook. By sheer volume of audiobooks and because she and her books sound thoroughly amazing, I thought she would feature as my first guest. As she has so many of her books in audio, I’ve decided to do two posts.

First, a bit about her:

Pauline Baird Jones had a tough time with reality from the get-go. After “schooling” from four, yes FOUR brothers, she knew that some people needed love and others needed shooting. Pauline figured she could do both. Romantic suspense was the logical starting point, but there were more worlds to explore, more rules to break and minds to bend. She grabbed her pocket watch and time travel device and dove through the wormhole into the world of science fiction and even some Steampunk.

Now she wanders among the genres, trying a little of this and a lot of that, rampaging through her characters’ lives like Godzilla because she does love her peril (when it’s not happening to her). Never fear, she gives her characters happy endings. Well, the good characters. The bad ones get justice.

Pauline just released her 13th novel, Relatively Risky. She’s not superstitious about it, well, maybe a little. But the whole loving/killing thing that needs to be done? Doing it fictionally is just better for everyone. And for Pauline, who hates the thought of getting strip searched and jailed. Ahem.

Empec�� el 2014 publicando en Enero��Una vez psiquiatra…Es una colecci��n de tres novelas cortas dentro del g��nero del thriller psicol��gico (Carne de ca����n, Trabajo en equipo��y��Memoria) con la misma protagonista, Mary, una psiquiatra y escritora que intenta pasarse a la escritura, pero las amistades y las circunstancias la arrastran de vuelta a la psiquiatr��a. Las tres historias son muy diferentes y tratan de temas tan variados como el abuso infantil, el racismo, el prejuicio, la corrupci��n policial, asesinatos, violaci��n, asesinos en serie…

El original lo escrib�� hace tiempo pero repasando mis historias me di cuenta de que de hecho el tema era muy actual. Es una historia de obsesiones, relaciones claustrof��bicas y control mental. ��Os imagin��is como ser��a si vuestra vida se convirtiera en��La ventana indiscreta y alguien os estuviera vigilando las 24 horas del d��a? En Septiembre publiqu����I Love Your Cupcakes��(Me encantan tus cupcakes)��un romance dulce en el que los tres protagonistas (Dulce, Adelfa y Storm) participan en un concurso de reposter��a televisivo y descubren que el amor puede aparecer en los sitios m��s insospechados. Es un libro muy optimista y os lo recomiendo especialmente si ten��is un d��a de esos tontos donde parece que todo va mal.

En Noviembre particip�� en NaNoWriMo y gan��. Mi proyecto era escribir la tercera novela en una serie juvenil (paranormal) que estoy escribiendo. Ahora mismo la estoy traduciendo y corrigiendo y espero publicar los tres libros de la serie bastante seguiditos cuando est��n listos. La serie, de momento, se llama��Asuntos ang��licos y la primera novela��Alerta Pink. Como v��is de momento no tengo portada de verdad, aunque la escultura de porcelana de Lladr�� (Angel Protector se llama) me encanta.

He empezado a publicar la primera novela de la serie en Wattpad, por si os apetece echarle un vistazo, aunque es solo un borrador.
