Guest (Classic) author: Mark Twain. Do you think you know him?
Today is Friday and I bring you another author who’s not with us any longer, at least physically, although I’m sure you’ve heard (and most likely read) him.

Mark Twain or Samuel Langhorne Clemens (his real name). He was born on 30th November 1835, in a small town called Florida (Mo). He was the 6th child of his family. His father, John Marshall was a judge and they moved a few miles East to Hannibal, in the banks of the Mississippi, a stop for steam boats (travelling from St Louis and New Orleans) when he was very young. His childhood home is now his museum. His father died when he was only 12 and a year later he left school to become a printer’s apprentice. After that he spent a fair amount of time involved in the letters business and joined his brother Orion’s newspaper as printer and assistant editor. He moved to another job as a printer in St Louis, and once there he became a river pilot’s apprentice and obtained his pilot’s license in 1858. His pseudonym comes from that period. According to his official website (link below): It is a river term which means two fathoms or 12-feet when the depth of water for a boat is being sounded. “Mark twain” means that is safe to navigate. (Other explanations exist.)
Due to poor trade during the Civil War he started working as a newspaper reporter all over the country. He got married in 1870 to Olivia Langdon and although they had 4 children, only one, Clara, survived them, and she never had any children.
His first story to gain recognition was ‘The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calavaras County’ published in New York in 1865. (You won’t be surprised to hear that in Calavaras, California, they celebrate the Jumping Frog contest.) His first novel The Innocents Abroad was published in 1869, The Adventures of Tom Swayer in 1876, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in 1885…He wrote many other novels, sketches, articles, short stories, letters…

He was interested in science, modern gadgets and inventions and he invested heavily in some of them that resulted in him ending up heavily in debt, despite the money he obtained from selling his books and from his many speaking engagements.
He died on 21st April 1910. His childhood home is now a museum in Hannibal. His birth coincided with a visit by the Halley comet and he was convinced that his death would also be associated with it (he died the day after the next visit of the comet).

Autor Clásico Invitado. Francisco de Quevedo y Villegas. Muy actual!

Como sabéis los viernes me gusta traer invitados a mi blog. Estaba pensando el otro día en escritores de mi país, del Siglo de Oro, y un gran favorito mío me vino a la cabeza. Quevedo. Todo un carácter, y me pareció que mucho de sus escritos, especialmente El Buscón son de lo más actual en tiempos de crisis. He encontrado muchos enlaces a páginas sobre él y en muchas podéis leer su obra gratuitamente. Evidentemente no es solo favorito mío sino de mucha gente.
Vale la pena leer su biografía en detalle, pero para no hacer el post excesivamente largo solo incluyo unos pocos detalles, pero podéis leer mucho más sobre él en los enlaces.
Francisco Gómez de Quevedo Villegas y Santibáñez Cevallos nació en Madrid, el 17 de septiembre de 1580 y murió en Villanueva de los Infantes, Ciudad Real, el 8 de Septiembre de 1645.
Hijo de Pedro Gómez de Quevedo y Villegas y de María Santibáñez su familia formaba parte de la aristocracia cortesana. Sus padres murieron siendo él muy joven y se educó en el colegio imperial de los Jesuitas y luego en las universidades de Alcalá de Henares y Valladolid donde fue un excelente estudiante, especialmente de teología y estudió varias lenguas (incluyendo el hebreo, el árabe, griego y latín, y varias lenguas modernas).
Se convirtió en protegido del duque de Osuna y lo acompañó a Sicilia como secretario de estado y parece que estuvo envuelto en varias intrigas políticas. A su vuelta en 1616 fue nombrado caballero de la Orden de Santiago. Cayó en desgracia (a la vez que el duque) acusado de participar en una conjuración en Venecia y lo desterraron a Torre de Juan de Abad, y luego estuvo preso en monasterios y en arresto domiciliario. Sus problemas también vinieron en parte por defender la propuesta de nombrar al Apóstol Santiado patrón de España (contra los Carmelitas que defendían a Santa Teresa de Jesús. Me recuerda a los líos que ha habido en Inglaterra con defensores de Jane Austen como personaje impreso en billetes ingleses, que por lo visto han recibido amenazas en Twitter. Los medios de comunicación cambian, la gente, no tanto.)
Cuando el rey Felipe IV sube al poder su suerte cambio algo. Su relación con el conde-duque de Olivares, inicialmente amistosa le ayudó a conseguir el título de secretario real. La historia de Santiago y Santa Teresa siguió y de nuevo lo desterraron por hablar demasiado (esta vez a un convento en León).
Volvió a la corte y se casó con Esperanza de Mendoza, una viuda amiga de la esposa del conde-duque, pero el matrimonio solo duró unos meses. Quevedo y el conde-duque empezaron a desconfiar el uno del otro (por lo visto había mucha corrupción en el gobierno, sí, las cosas, de verdad, cambian poco), Quevedo escribió algunas críticas que le valieron el destierro de nuevo al Convento de San Marcos en León en 1639 y allí estuvo encerrado en una pequeña celda hasta el 1643. Su salud sufrió por el encierro y se retiró a Torre de Juan de Abad y poco antes de morir se trasladó a Villanueva de los Infantes donde murió.
Quevedo aparte del título de Caballero de la Orden de Santiago también ostentaba el Señorío de la Torre de Juan de Abad (no sin controversia).
En cuanto a su obra Quevedo es (y fue en su época) muy conocido como poeta, cultivador del Conceptismo (como estilo opuesto al Culteranismo representado por Luís de Góngora. Digamos que las relaciones entre los dos poetas, que eran tan opuestos estilísticamente como en personalidad, nunca fueron muy amigables. El poema ‘Érase un hombre’ que incluyo después se sabe dedicado a Góngora. Góngora tampoco se quedó calladito, no os vayáis a pensar.), famoso también por sus traducciones, tratados políticos, obras filosóficas (La cuna y la sepultura, 1634), religiosas, y su novela picaresca Historia de la vida del Buscón, llamado don Pablos, que os recomiendo encarecidamente.
Yo personalmente siempre me incliné por el conceptismo, y la verdad es que pocos personajes encontraréis con vidas tan entretenidas (aunque como vimos con Cervantes, los escritores de entonces llevaban la aventura otro nivel) y con tanta despreocupación por las consecuencias de abrir la boca.
Quevedo ha sido personaje en obras de teatro, poemas, novelas históricas, y más recientemente, en las conocidas novelas de la serie Las aventuras del capitán Alatriste de Arturo Pérez-Reverte. Y en su adaptación cinematográfica.

Queridos lectores. He estado hablando (o intercambiando correos electrónicos para ser precisos) con una amiga (y autora) sobre esto y aquello y lo de más allá, y acabamos hablando de libros de AUTO-AYUDA. Como muchos ya sabéis, entender los algoritmos de Amazon no está al alcance de meros mortales. Sus categorías tampoco me parecen demasiado lógicas. Supongo que pueden funcionar si escribes algo pensando en dónde encajará, pero intentar que algo que has escrito encaje (aparte de las categoría más generales como ficción o no), es ‘interesante’ por decir algo. Podéis intentarlo con uno de vuestros libros favoritos y a menos que seáis lectores empedernidos de un género en concreto, a ver como de lejos llegáis.
Me he despistado, como siempre. Mi amiga y yo estábamos echándole un vistazo a las categorías dentro de libros de auto-ayuda y está tan lleno de cosas raras y maravillosas como todas las demás.
Todo esto me hizo pensar en una de esas cosas que son como la piedrecita en el zapato. No es muy grande pero te irrita y no te deja pensar en otra cosa cuando está ahí. Es el asunto de los libros de instrucciones. Compramos una cámara, y viene con instrucciones. Un teléfono, lo mismo. Incluso cosas muy básicas. La vida, que es bastante complicada…nada. Ni manual, ni video, ni CD. Te lanzan al agua sin flotador ni saber nadar…
En una de mis historias cortas, ‘La novela’ uno de los personajes, Denver, decide que la vida sería mucho más fácil si la viviéramos como si fuera una novela de género, porque sabríamos de qué iba la cosa, entenderíamos las convenciones, los tipos de personajes, etc, y ella lo intenta. Como seguramente os habéis imaginado, no funciona demasiado bien. Pero por intentarlo que no quede.
Si de repente os dieran la tarea de crear un manual de instrucciones para vivir la vida (tendría que ser bastante general y básico), ¿qué incluiríais? ¿Qué capítulos pondríais en el índice?
Y si de repente os enviasen un ejemplar del tal libro, ¿qué consultaríais primero? ¿Mantenerse sano? ¿Relaciones familiares? ¿Amor? ¿Dinero y finanzas? ¿Cómo mantener la perspectiva? ¿Sobrevivir?
Tengo mucha curiosidad. Decidme lo que pensáis, por favour.

Autora invitada: Adelfa Martín
Como todos los viernes, toca autor, hoy autora, invitada. Conocí a Adelfa Martín (y he de reconocer que lo primero que me llamó la atención fue el nombre. Se lo tengo que tomar prestado para algún personaje) a través del grupo de escritores hispanos que frecuento en Facebook. Hemos intercambiado comentarios y no pude resistir invitarla ya que sus obras tratan de temas de los más actuales e importantes. Como sabéis disfruto de libros de puro entretenimiento pero hay obras que van más allá.
Adelfa prefiere que sus obras hablen por ella, así que la biografía es minima, pero podéis encontrar más detalles en los enlaces. Aquí está lo que ella nos cuenta:
Nueve (9) libros. Cuatro novelas; cuentos; poesía; cuentos y poemas infantiles.
Después de una vida de trabajo y responsabilidades; del tan llevado y traído pan nuestro de cada día, tengo la relativa paz necesaria para escribir, como fue mi deseo por tantos años. Mi afición principal son los cuentos y relatos, aunque también la poesía, a la que últimamente he dedicado mas esfuerzo, siempre con un fondo social inevitable, pues es la única forma de protesta que encuentro a mano para mostrar mi inconformidad, ante tantos atropellos e injusticias.
Las dos novelas, Irene, y Desde el Otro Lado de la Vida -esta un poco autobiográfica- son un intento, un reto personal, para comprobar si era capaz de escribir algo mas largo que un cuento o un poema… Últimamente he agregado a esto una novela corta titulada La Heredera, así como una publicación dedicada a poemas y cuentos infantiles.

Today I’m very pleased to take part in Patricia A. Knight’s blog tour of her new novel Hers to Command.

First:
The potent aphrodisiac enveloped Fleur in a dizzying swirl as she swallowed the last of the jeweled goblet‘s contents. It tasted of wine, cinnagin and musk. The heavy door to the ritual chamber opened. A scarlet-robed man strode through, pulling the door closed behind him. He halted abruptly, standing motionless, fixing her with a long stare before lifting an ironic eyebrow.
“You are my partner? You are tiny. I could break you.”
His rich baritone vibrated in her feminine places. Her senses rioting, she inhaled the clean scent of lingnum soap borne on a waft of air. Her senses reeled under the masculine assault of the warrior standing before her. His robes indicated a seventh-level magister of advanced magicks. His scarlet robe of office loosely draped a tall, broad-shouldered, spare body. Warrior braids at his temple swept back heavy, shoulder-length, auburn curls, leaving his high cheekbones and strong jaw in clean profile. His hazel eyes regarded her with the intensity of a great hunting cat. You are a very large man.
Fleur stood as tall as her five-foot-nothing would allow. “I am sturdier than I look.”
Her eyes wandered over the height and breadth of him. Patricio is right. He has a physical presence. “The docenti told me that under the influence of cinnagin, I would happily service a bald-headed cave troll. You, sir, are not a cave troll.” He looked taken aback, then just snorted.
A sudden flush sent her equilibrium reeling. “This aphrodisiac is affecting me strangely. I feel a little—dizzy.”
Swaying where she stood, her gaze shot up to him as he moved silently to steady her. His large hand felt calloused and warm against her upper arm. A strange course of electric sensation pulsed between them. My mind is playing games with me.
His other hand held leather cuffs and lashings. She was unable to hold his amber gaze, unwilling to betray her precipitous arousal and mounting fear. Trembling, she stepped out of his gentle hold. Without thought, she rubbed her arm where his touch had sparked that strange electric tingle.
Fleur moved to the glazed window overlooking the profusely blooming courtyard below. Some young children laughed gaily as they pursued each other around the central fountain in a carefree game of tag. Such sweet innocence. It reminded her why she was here. She wanted to give them a lifetime of carefree days.
“You know we must succeed.” Fleur carefully placed the goblet on the sill and steadied herself, bracing both hands against the framing, her heart suddenly racing, her breath coming in short pants.
“Yes. I am aware of the stakes.”
She threw a glance toward him, at his dry, sardonic response. Her thoughts spun frantically. What do I know about House DeTano? They are superb horsemen. “I don’t remember seeing you at court,” she said.
“Before the invasion, I lived off-planet for a number of years. I came back to fight for Her, for the Senzienza, and for my people.”
Fleur straightened in astonishment. “She has spoken to you? The Senzienza, Verdantia, has spoken to you?”
He inclined his head slightly. “Yes.”
“I’ve never met—.” She shook her head. “Later.” He is vastly more than he seems.
Fleur glanced nervously to the leather cuffs held in her magister’s surprisingly elegant hands. “Being bound is difficult for me. But I will submit to you.” His head tilted in question, and then his hazel eyes softened.
“Most certainly, you will submit to me. I have performed the Great Rite many times, my Lady and though I would spare you, the binding is necessary.”
She could not control her trembling. He moved to stroke her bare arms in reassurance. Again, that strange sensation pulsed through her.
“Don’t fear me. I’ll take care with you,” he murmured.
Don’t fear him? Heat from his body engulfed her. Her skin tingled where his calloused hands caressed her arms. She didn’t understand why his erotic pull was so strong. It must be the cinnagin.
His hard thighs easily trapped her against the marble windowsill as he gathered her hair aside to pull at the golden cords holding up her gown. The firm length of his arousal pressed into her back. She heard the catch in his breath as he bared her. The warmth of his whispered, “By the goddess, you are exquisite,” flowed across her shoulders. “Lady, you have no conception how cruel the next few hours will become. We cannot rely solely upon your self-control, for in every way you must submit to me.”
His baritone voice rumbled through her. Now it begins. She would risk anything for even a chance of success. “Yes. I submit. Everything depends on it.”
“Yes, everything.” He nipped her shoulder then gently kissed the sting away.
“I am going to caress every part of you and keep you aroused until the crystals sing with power. The longer you stay at the edge of climax, the faster the crystals can draw on your energy. Sometimes it takes merely a day to replenish their power. If you should go over, I will bring you right back up. As long as you are able, you must deny yourself or tell me when you approach your peak. Do you understand?”
“Yes,” she whispered. “And when I can no longer discipline myself? If I am beyond self-control?” She gasped in air, her heart pounding in her ears. “What then?”
Swaying, unsteady on her feet, her eyes were drawn to the implements hanging on the far wall—whips, paddles, manacles, bars and others she could not identify. Her fear spiked upward.
“Then I will bring you back up, repeatedly.” He had followed her gaze. The corner of one lip quirked up and his amber eyes narrowed wickedly. “By whatever means necessary.”
At this, her knees buckled. If the conte had not been quick to catch her, she would have shared the floor with her robe, then all went dark.
Do you want more? OK, there is the second:
It was perhaps an hour later when her guard tapped lightly. “Your Highness.”
“Yes, Eric.”
“Conte DeTano is here.”
“Please admit him.” She watched from her seat on the chaise as Ari strode into the room.
“Your Highness.”
“Conte,” she smiled. “Please, sit.”
“I prefer to stand if it is the same to you, Your Highness,” he replied curtly.
“It is not. I dislike having you loom over me like a bomb about to explode.”
A laugh startled from his lips and he smiled as he sat down in the chair Patricio had vacated.
He is so handsome when he smiles.
“My second-in-command sent me some troublesome news today. I am out of sorts. I didn’t mean to direct my temper at you, Your Highness.”
“Apology accepted. I would like it very much if you would call me Fleur. You did before.”
“Yes, well. Being balls-deep between your legs creates a certain intimacy,” Ari said with a wicked grin. “If that is your wish, Your Highness, Fleur, it is.”
Heat crept up her cheeks. He says the most unexpected things. Taking a deep breath, she regrouped, handing Ari the scroll. “Tell me about this.”
He scanned carefully as he unrolled the stiff parchment. He stopped midway, then rolled it back up. With a soft chime of medallions, he re-tied the ribbons, placing it on a low table beside him. “What is it you wish to know?”
Oh dear. She studied his austere expression, trying to decide on a diplomatic way to start. “Why is marrying me so distasteful that you would flee the planet for fifteen years?” She winced inwardly. Tactful, Fleur—very subtle.
Ari’s eyes narrowed and his fingers started drumming on the arms of the chair. He rose and paced to the window, then stood looking out.
“It was not the thought of marriage to you that was distasteful. What was distasteful was the thought of a marriage to anyone based solely on my genetics. It is how you breed animals, not people. I am not a stud horse to be bred to Patricio’s favorite mare.” His back stiffened. “My apologies. I did not mean…”
“Please, Ari, sit down,” she interrupted. Patricio’s ‘mare’? Ouch.
“I prefer to stand,” he responded curtly, not moving from the window.
She rolled her eyes in exasperation. “I am not used to speaking to someone’s backside half-way across the room. Will you at least turn around?”
A smile flickered. He turned. “I didn’t want to ‘loom’.” Laughter lurked in his eyes, and a half-smile turned his lips.
He really is quite extraordinary. A soft laugh escaped her. “Thank you.”
He nodded and folded his arms across his chest, then crossed his legs at the ankles as he leaned back onto the windowsill. The heavy muscles of his arms and chest stretched his black knit sweater, and the black leather leggings tucked into his over-the-knee boots left little for her to imagine. Such a handsome man.
Something about the way his eyes explored her body sent heat up and down her spine then straight to her lady-parts. She remembered the weight of him as he lay atop her. She remembered looking up into his gold-flecked eyes, feeling his mobile lips caressing her cheeks, feeling the rough brush of his beard on her tender inner skin as he—mind on present business, Fleur!
“Ahem,” she cleared her throat. “So, have you given this contract any further thought? Do you still find it so distasteful?” Oh, by the gods, Fleur, show some subtlety. What is wrong with you?
“Why? Are you going to ask me to marry you?” He eyed her dispassionately.
She held his gaze steadily. How did this conversation get away from me? “Not today.”
“Good.” He looked at the timekeeper on her table. “Your Highness, I am very short on time. I will continue this discussion with you another day.” He started toward her door.
“You haven’t answered my question, sir!”
“Yes. No,” he tossed over his shoulder as he left the room.
Argggh! She slumped back onto the couch. Yes? No? What? She replayed their conversation.
Have you given this contract further thought? “Yes.” Do you still find it so distasteful? “No.”
Her mouth gradually developed a delighted smile.

Cómo descargar un libro en Amazon
Amigos y familiares me han dicho más de una vez que no conseguían descargar libros en Amazon. Intenté investigar como demostrarlo en video pero a mi ordenador parece que no le gustan los programas para hacer eso así que…
Lo intentaremos con imágenes. Y si no funciona pues…a ver.
Primero hay que tener una cuenta en Amazon. En princio lo único que necesitáis es una cuenta de correo electrónico y debéis crear una contraseña. Si vais a comprar libros u otros productos necesitaréis un tarjeta de crédito o de débito (creo que incluso aunque los libros sean gratis necesitáreis incluir una tarjeta para que funcione).
Ponéis en la dirección de internet (si estáis en España)
http://www.amazon.es/
Si no, si vais al fondo de la página veréis que hay una lista larga de otras tiendas Amazon. En general suele ser:
http://www.amazon. (lo que sea, .com, .co.uk (la inglesa), .de (Alemana), .br (Brasil…)
Una vez ahí si tenéis cuenta igual os reconoce. Si no, tendréis que registraros.
Ésta es la página. Una vez os habéis registrado, volvéis a la página de compra donde hay un menú a la izquierda que os permite buscar en varias tiendas o todas a la vez. Si buscáis un libro electrónico, dadle a la Tienda Kindle.
Dentro de la cajita al lado de Tienda Kindle podéis escribir el título del libro (o del autor) que busquéis. Naturalmente yo he puesto una de las mías, ‘Click Me Happy!‘ Y le dais al botón de buscar o al enter.
Entonces os aparecerá en la pantalla el libro. En mi caso está en versión española e inglesa. Si hay varios libros con el título que buscáis os aparecerá una lista por orden de popularidad. Buscad el que sea y hacéis clic.

Veréis que a la derecha aparecen 3 ventanitas. La primera para comprarlo con un clic (para eso tenéis que tener los detalles de la tarjeta ya en amazon, pero es rapidísimo..). La segunda ventanita os ofrece la posibilidad de descargar una muestra del libro que estáis mirando, un 10% y así podéis saber si os gustará o no. Por cierto, no funciona en todos lo libros, pero si véis una flecha y ’mirar dentro’ en la portada os permite mirar dentro y podéis ver unas página también. Vamos que por oportunidades de saber si el libro os gustará no será. La tercera ventanita os permite leer libros electrónicos de Amazon si no tenéis un lector electrónico Kindle. Si tenéis un ordenador, un teléfono androide, smart phone, una tablet (aunque no sea Kindle, el I-pad o cualquier otra). Lo que tenéis que hacer es descargar el App donde queráis (en más de un sitio si queréis, y todos los libros que compréis los tendréis disponibles en todos los dispositivos donde tengáis el App. Y si os compráis un Kindle, aparecerán allí como por arte de magia). Verés que la he coloreado de color amarillo para que se vea bien.
Si hacéis clic en el botón en la tercera ventana (amarillo) esta es la pantalla que aparece. El App es gratis, seleccionáis el tipo de dispositivo que tengáis, y ya estáis perparados para leer lo que queráis.
Si queréis comprar un libro le dáis a la primera ventana en la imagen con Clic Me Happy! (como ejemplo, o el libro que queráis comprar) y entonces os pedirá la identificación si no la habéis incluido ya. Os enseño la página pero mi cuenta es con amazon.co.uk así que está en inglés, pero comprarlo y descargarlo es cuestión solo de poner los datos y hacer clic. Y el libro aparecerá o en vuestro Kindle, o donde hayáis instalado el App. Tarda solo unos segundos. Es fabuloso.

How to download e-books from Amazon
I have had some of my friends complaining that they could not work out how to download/buy, electronic books in Amazon (other sites are available but I don’t have any other electronic readers so can’t be of much assistance. I’ve bought books in Smashwords, and like anywhere else, you need to have an account and follow the instructions, although depending on the format it can be a bit tricky).
I thought about doing a video but unfortunately between my computer and my lack of technical acumen I didn’t get very far (the apps to capture screen images I understood would not download in my computer or were not trusted, others had disappeared and others…I just couldn’t work out), so here is one with images.
First things first, you must have an account with whichever is your local store at Amazon. You’ll need an e-mail address, you’ll need to create a password and if you’re intending to buy anything they’ll ask you for a credit or debit card (a bank card of some sort). I cannot show you the bit of setting it up (I’m sure there are ways to do it, but I already have an account and my computer knows that so…).
You can go to http://www.amazon.com If this is not your local store, you can always scroll to the bottom of the page and you have a list of other stores where you can click and it takes you there. If you try to buy an item in an store that is not your local the website will recognise that and ask you if you have moved (you can change your store) or direct you to click to go to your store.
What, will you ask, happens if I don’t have a Kindle? Can I still read electronic books? Well, yes. Amazon offers you the possibility of downloading an App for your PC, tablet or smartphone. If you search on the box for any book (you can go directly to Kindle store on the menu and that will only show you e-books) on the right it will show you the App. See here, highlighted.

Once you have downloaded that (and you can download it to more than one computer or device) any books you buy will directly appear on your reader. If you were to later buy a Kindle device, they will appear there once you’re connected, like if it were by magic (it’s fascinating if you’ve never experienced it. And you can make the letters bigger and smaller that it’s great for people who’ve just started using reading glasses. Yes, like me.).
Let’s say we want to buy a book. As an example, let’s say my new romantic novella ‘Click Me Happy!’ (yes, of course I’m trying to sell books too.)
We put the name on the search box, click search:

In this case I have a Spanish and English version. I’ve highlighted the English version. We click on that book:

I have highlighted on the right all the options. If you click on the top one (supposing you have an account, details of you card, etc), you are buying the book and it will appear on your reader. If you have more than one (PC, phone, Kindle) you can choose which one you want to send it to from dropdown box (see following image) but you can also later go to manage your Kindle and download it anywhere else you want (I bought a device for my mother and can download the books to both in so far as they are connected via Wi-fi to the net).
You can also request a sample (tends to be the 10% of the book) and this will be send to your reader. You can check it and if you like it then buy the book. (If you notice, in the picture of the book there is an arrow saying ‘Look inside’. If you click there it also gives you an option to check inside of the book, not the whole book, but it also give you an idea of if you’ll like it or not).
The third option is again to download the App wherever you wish, just in case you don’t have one. (Of course they also tell you that you can buy a Kindle and they’ll be happy to send it to you.)

Guest Classical Author. Jane Austen

You know I’ve decided that I should bring some classic authors as guests to my blog, not only because it’s always a pleasure to remind myself of their work (and hopefully those who read my posts) but also because we have the advantage that many of their works are available for free and it always offers us an opportunity to read them again or even get to know some we’re not so familiar with.
Today I decided to visit a great favourite with many people, not only readers but also those who make film adaptations and TV series. Jane Austen. We all have our favourites novels, and also adaptations (I quite like Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility movie although on TV Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth…is still probably my favourite. I also love the novel. Yes, and Mr Darcy).
Brief biography:
Jane Austen was born on the 16th of December 1775. His father was a reverend in Steventon. She was the 6th of seven children and only the second of two daughters and she became quite close to her sister Cassandra (her mother was also called Cassandra). Henry, one of her brothers, would become her agent in later life.
At age of 8 she was sent to boarding school with her sister where she would learn what was felt to be appropriate education for a woman at the time (French, music and dancing…). At home it seems she was always interested in reading and writing and they would make their own plays that the family would perform.
In 1789 she started to write more seriously (Love and Friendship) and a bit later started writing plays. In 1795 she met Tom Lefroy (if you have watched Becoming Jane Austen you’ll remember he’s played in that movie by James MacAvoy) the nephew of a neighbouring family who was in London studying Law. Unfortunately neither of the two families being of means it appears it was felt such union would not be in their interest and he was sent away.
She worked on some stories that later would evolve into her novels. Her father retired when she was 27 and they moved to Bath, a spa town that was the epitome of class and high society (everybody who was anybody would go there to take the waters and to be seen, it seems).
In Bath she received a proposal of marriage by a childhood friend, Harris Brigg-Wither, her only one. She initially said yes, as he was to receive and inheritance who would have secured her and her family’s subsistence, but she thought better of it and the next day she refused.
In 1803 her brother sold Susan to a publisher who promised to publish it but didn’t and there were difficulties with rights afterwards.
Her father died in 1805 leaving the three women in a difficult situation. They moved frequently until her brother Frank offered them a cottage where they moved when she was 33. She dedicated herself to writing there and her brother sold Sense and Sensibility to Thomas Egerton who published it in 1811. It got good reviews and the whole edition was sold by 1813.
The same publisher seeing how well it had done in 1813 published Pride and Prejudice. It was even more successful and he published a second edition. Mansfield Park although less well received by critics was a public success and became the most commercially successful of her works during her lifetime. Jane move on to publisher John Murray who published a new edition of Mansfield Park, Emma, Persuasion, Northanger Abbey. Her brother Henry’s bank failed and Jane made efforts to regain the rights to Susan that was then published as Catherine.
In 1816 her health began to fail but she carried on working. In January 1817 her sister Cassandra and brother Henry took her to Winchester to seek medical help and there she died on July the 18th 1817 leaving some unfinished works. Her brother published her complete works and revealed her real identity.

I couldn’t find a copy of Sense and Sensibility free although they were quite a few under $1 so…(and I suspect one must be hiding somewhere).

Hace unas cuantas semanas decidí empezar a dedicarle algunos de mis post de invitados a escritores clásicos en inglés, en parte porque me pareció que era de justicia después de escribir tantos posts de autores modernos, y en parte porque me daba la oportunidad de visitar sus vidas y obras, ya que muchas están ahora disponibles, en formato electrónico, baratitas. (Por cierto, si tenéis la suerte de vivir en otros países que no sean España, os dejo enlaces gratuitos). Hoy he decidido que les ha llegado la hora a escritores en lengua española. Y por supuesto, es de justicia empezar por Cervantes.
Breve biografía:
La vida de Cervantes no le tiene nada que envidiar a muchas novelas de aventuras de esas que siempre han tenido mucho éxito. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra nació en 1547 en Alcalá de Henares (no se sabe la fecha con seguridad aunque se acepta el 29 de Septiembre ya que era San Miguel y era costumbre bautizar a los niños con el nombre del santo del día) , el cuarto de 7 hijos (por casualidad mi post en inglés es sobre Jane Austen que también era una de 7 hijos) . Hijo de un cirujano (sordo) Don Rodrigo de Cervantes y doña Leonor de Cortinas (d.1593). Rodrigo fue a la cárcel debido a deudas impagadas y esto trajo dificultades a la familia. Miguel estudió Filosofía y Literatura en Italia y se alistó como soldado en Nápoles en 1570. Fue herido durante la batalla de Lepanto y perdió el uso de su mano izquierda (convirtiéndose en ‘el manco de Lepanto’) en 1751. Unos años más tarde el galeón en el que viajaba fue capturado por unos piratas y lo tuvieron de esclavo en Argel. Intentó escapar sin éxito pero su familia consiguió pagar el rescate en 1580.
Cervantes se mudó a Madrid y tuvo una aventura con Ana De Villafranca. La pareja tuvo una hija, Isabel de Saavedra. En 1584 se casó con Catalina de Palacios y empezó a escribir obras de teatro y poesías, incluyendo La Galatea (1585) su primera obra publicada (un romance pastoral en verso y prosa). Como sus escritos no le daban muchos ingresos consiguió un trabajo con el gobierno, de cobrador de impuestos para la Armada Española. Debido a las deudas estuvo en la cárcel más de una vez.

En 1604, Cervantes, su mujer e hija vivían en Valladolid, pero después de publicar Don Quijote se mudaron a Madrid. Novelas Ejemplares vieron la publicación en 1613, y os las recomiendo encarecidamente. La segunda parte de Don Quijote fue publicada en 1615 y el año siguiente publicó Persiles y Segismunda. Cervantes murió en 1616 y está enterrado en el convento de los Trinitarios de Madrid.
