Hand Paintings and Symbols in Rock Art
The Bradshaw...

Hand Paintings and Symbols in Rock Art
The Bradshaw Foundation“Hand paintings are depicted in Rock Art around the world. The hand image would have been created in a variety of ways: the artist may have used the hand on the rock as a stencil, spraying paint from the mouth or charcoal powder through a reed; the outline of the hand may have been painted around by brush; or simply painting the hand and then placing it on the rock. The hand paintings were created by men, women and children. What ever the method, and what ever the style of accompanying art, hand paintings are one of the most common elements of rock art.
But what of their meaning? Was this the signature of the artist, confirming both his or her work as well as his or her self-awareness? Was it the artist, or shaman, touching the the rock surface in order to acknowledge and therefore enter the spirit world, known as the ‘sealing’ ritual? Where there is a spiral incorporated into the motif, as at La Cienega and Three Rivers for example, they may be depictions of healing energy that channels through the hands - the ancient practice of Reiki. There might have been a metaphorical link between the ‘spraying on of paint’ with the ‘spraying on of medicine’ by the shaman.
Given that the images exist around the world, and cover a great time span, clearly there must be a variety of meanings. For all of the hypotheses, hand painting and the ‘hand’ motif could have represented any number of rituals, but without knowledgeable informants from a particular culture, hypotheses they must remain” (read more).

In case you’ve missed the news, drunk driver,...

In case you’ve missed the news, drunk driver, homophobe, and Toronto’s current mayor Rob Ford’s history of being an embarrassment (yes there are so many incidents that the public is now keeping a spreadsheet updated) hit new heights the past two weeks! During that time:
a video of him smoking crack cocaine was shown to journalists
He refused to resign, saying the story was ridiculous (nobody has contested this, this whole situation is ridiculous)
After ducking the issue for eight days and saying nothing Rob Ford finally issued a carefully-worded denial that suspiciously used the present tense a lot and never talked about the past (“I do not smoke crack cocaine” vs what he could’ve said: “I have never smoked crack cocaine, I would not do it on the job, and most certainly would not do it on video, hah hah hah what a CRAZY STORY”)
Lots of his staff have quit or been fired, some for telling him to seek treatment
It was revealed that one of the people seen in a photo taken at the same time as the crack recording has been murdered
The police have been investigating and interviewing people in his office, after which his response to media was the hilarious “Everything’s fine. I have no idea what the police are investigating.” (this is now my go-to response to any “hey, how’ve you been” question, by the way)
That’s where my protest sign above came from; this was a six point explanation so now you can find my little sign extremely hilariousANYWAY. This is all to say that there was a little protest today and Jenn and Emily and I went! I thought there’d be lots of funny signs but mine was one of the few jokey ones. I got to talk to reporters and said “I just want people to know there’s more to Toronto than crack cocaine” and that got published a few hours later as “there’s more to Toronto than Rob Ford”, which, I mean, is also true. But there’s ALSO more to Toronto than crack cocaine. For example, did you know we are the home of the IKEA monkey?
We look forward to your tourism dollars.

Memorial Weekend
This is what’s most important. I got home after no serious traffic. In other words, my gosh, I’m not stressed at all. The weekend in Gales Ferry (Mystic) CT included such events as Settlers of Catan, Chicken Foot, Nature Hike, Nature Getting Lost, Cheap Fireworks, Margaritas, Settlers of Catan Knights and Cities Expansion Pack, Getting Shot Into the Air by a Mysterious Wind Power My Wife (Marget) Has, Driving Range, Learning that 60 MPH Baseballs are Fast, and More. Life’s Good, even if I haven’t written in too long. Pics
