The Dragon Heart Keeper Prologue

Here is the prologue to my short story "The Dragon Heart Keeper"



Prologue
“No! I’m innocent, I swear!” Ash yells after hearing his verdict.“There is evidence that says otherwise, Mister Brandon,” says the Judge.“I didn’t do it, I didn’t murder anyone.” He looks from the judge to the jury, to his lawyer and family, “You’ve got to believe me.” The judge brings her gavel down, the sound of it hitting its wooden base made Ash jump.“Ashley Brandon, I hearby sentence you to spend the rest of you life in the form of a Dragon.”“What?” Ash was confused. Was he hearing this correctly, a dragon? Was he dreaming?“You will be locked away and chained up until the day when the next Dragon Keeper arrives.” Yes, surely he must be dreaming.“You can’t be serious?”“Oh I’m deadly serious, Mister Brandon. I hope you learn your lesson and be a better dragon then you were human.” With another crack of her gavel the judge closed the case. “Take him away.” It only takes a moment for two burly men to come at him with some thick heavy chains. Ash struggles against his cuffs as the bailiffs’ strap him in the chains. One of the chains goes around his neck and the other gets hooked up to his handcuffs. He felt like cement, like he was heavy enough to fall straight through the floor below. A door opens at the back of the courtroom and the bailiffs lead him through.“There must be some mistake,” Ash says when they’re in the corridor. It was plain white with no doors expect one at the end. That must be where they were heading, he thought.“Don’t speak,” says the Bailiff on the left“I don’t under-““You will soon,” interrupts Bailiff number Two, finishing Ash’s sentence. He opens the door and pushes Ash through.“Enjoy your new life,” snickered One, as the other joined in.“Wait…” but it was too late, the door had closed. Ash was now stuck in his new home, his prison. Which was, as he soon found out, a dungeon. He almost laughed. It was dark and bare, all except for a candle in the centre, and next to that was a large white hand-woven blanket. It was larger than a car. On the blanket was a piece of yellowed paper. Ash knelt down, unfolded the note and read. It was handwritten in a delicate calligraphy.
The Metamorphosis will begin soon, You best get some sleep, See you in the morning – The Keepers
Ash wasn’t sure who, or what, The Keepers were, but he was tired. He lay down on the blanket, which was actually pretty soft and comfortable. He sniffed. He could smell iron, and rotting meat. He sat up and gazed around. Next to a second door in the corner was a large metal bowl, and inside was something reddish-brown, raw meat. He was hungry, but not hungry enough to eat raw meat. He lay back down and curled into a foetal position and closed his eyes, waiting for the so-called metamorphosis to happen.

I hit the floor with a thud.Beast’s airy chortle resonated from outside the window.“Shut up. This isn’t funny,” I told him.Chel walked through the door. “Geeze, what happened?” She hurried to me. “Are you okay?” She righted my chair with a grunt.“That depends.”“On?” She cocked an eyebrow at me.  “On whether or not you’re going to untie me.”“Oh my gosh. I’m so sorry.” She scrambled to untie the knots.My hands slipped free and I rubbed my bruised arm. “What kind of friend are you?”“What?” She startled.I shook my head at her. “I can’t believe you’d commit me.”“Wait, you heard that?” Her eyes widened.I repeated it word for word.“Whoa, that’s, like, creepy and awesome at the same time. But I still don’t understand how this proves your dog is a werewolf.”The dreaded moment had arrived and nerves attacked my stomach. “Because, Chel—he bit me.”
Seventeen-year-old Tayla will never forget Beast’s fiery-venom spreading through her body like an infection. Now, with her best friend Chel’s help, she must find a human true love before the last petal falls from her enchanted rose or the full moon will transform her into a wolf forever.
But Tayla never expected that her biggest obstacle would come from inside—a wolf presence threatening to take her very soul. At every turn, the she-wolf exploits Tayla’s weaknesses and gains enough control to sabotage her dates. Tayla struggles to control her unruly wolf and her forbidden attraction to Beast. But can she resist his southern charm, the she-wolf’s attraction to his alluring scent, and still fall in love with a human?
Tangled in a web of wills, Tayla must risk everything to break the Curse of the Beast. With failure and possible death looming overhead, Tayla will do anything to find true love. The Dragon Heart Keeper Synopsis

I was lucky enough yesterday to sit down with three of Blackbell Academy’s students to talk about life, love and a tree
Scarlett, how did you feel when you were accepted into the Academy?
At first, I felt a little scared and nervous, because of the stigma surrounding Blackbell. But then I was happy when I met a really supportive group of people.
You have a really close-knit group of friends, with Emer and Kat. Can you spill any goss on them?
Hmm, I’m not really the gossiping type, but what I can say is this; I know who they’re dating. Sorry but my friends will kill me (not literally)
How did you feel when you found out you were a Legacy? That would have been exciting to know.
Um, no not really. Being a Legacy means there’s a lot that’s expected of you, because your parents were previous students. Also I don’t want to come off as a goody- two- shoes or anything, so I tend to hide it.
So… what is it with you and Dyston?
Dyston… well, its complicated. He can be a bit too over protective sometimes. He thinks he has to look out for me. But I can look after myself.
Dyston, how is it being the youngest of the Blackbells? It must be hard trying to compete with Lakyn and his ego.
It has its challenges. Especially with Lakyn and his ego. Our father never really gives me a second glance, he thinks I’m a disappointment for a son… but Lakyn, he’s the golden child.
Everyone knows you’re a muso, but any other random talents we should know about?
Um, I can make it rain anytime I want. I love the rain, it’s my stress relief, just standing under it. I also have the ability to dry myself off almost instantaneously- which Lakyn thinks is weird.
So can you explain the importance of the tree in the library for us? It must be pretty old to be that high? Who planted it and why?
I’m not actually sure who planted it. The tree was just sort of, always there. We built the academy around it, so yeah. I guess it is pretty old. It has its secrets.
And now to the eldest of the Blackbell brothers- Lakyn. Do you and Dyston have a rivalry of some sort? Or are you protective of your younger brother?
All siblings have a rivalry of some sort, don’t they? Nah, Dyston never listened to what our father had to say, he sort of went off on his own, probably another reason why his wings turned black…
Dyston: Hey, you don’t have to go and tell the whole world. I didn’t listen to Dad because he was too single minded to listen to me, he hates me, he’d rather promote you.
Lakyn: do I sense a hint of jealousy, little brother?
Dyston: Back off.
Scarlett: Guys, I’m sick of being in the middle of your fights. Sorry. They will behave now.
Lakyn: bossy, isn’t she? No bossy is an understatement. I think manip…
Dyston: I said shut it. If you don’t stop talking about Scarlett right now, I will stick my dagger in your chest.
Scarlett: Guys! I’m right here.
Lakyn: I apologise. Continue, beautiful.
(Dyston rolls his eyes)
Alright, How is it joining your father as a Professor? Is it challenging, having your father as your boss?
Lakyn: not at all, we work well together. He’s taught me how to be a man. And I’m hoping that one day I can take over as Headmaster.
(Dyston tries not to laugh)
You teach Combat Training. And by your own admission, are apparently in the top three best fighters of Blackbell Academy. Did you have to train hard, or was it natural to you?
Second. I am second actually, after Jacob Fox, in weapon training anyway. I am probably the best hands on combat fighter in the Academy, or the country.
D: that was until Scar here kicked your butt.
L: that was one time, and because she cheated. I know what goes on within your minds, your mind sex.
(Scarlett and Dyston look at each other, possibly sending each other secret messages as we speak)
Last question, Lakyn. The students think you’re either hot, or a jackass. What do you think about that? Would you ever bend the rules if ever there were a student you were attracted to?
I would like to think the hot part, who thinks I’m a jackass? (He turns to look at his brother and Scarlett, who divert their eyes immediately.) And about bending the rules, rules are only meant to be broken, right brother? (Dyston doesn’t look at him.)
