Renal Diet HQ Share – Eating Fish Preserves Memory In The Long Term
Do you eat fish at least once a week? Me, I do not like fish, but this study says that eating fish, not consuming Omega 3 fish oil capsules – preserves brain memory function. The researchers hypothesize that it’s related to an overall healthier lifestyle and healthier eating.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/lifestyles/health/sns-rt-us-health-brain-fish-20140813-story.html
From the article:
“The presence of baked or broiled fish in the diet reflected more general differences in lifestyle than could be accounted for simply by measuring one biological compound.” said Dr. James Becker, the study’s lead author from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania.
Of course, we all realize that eating healthier is probably better in the long term, right? So, eat more fish.

Renal Diet HQ Share – 40% Of The US Population Expected To Develop Diabetes
Did you know that over 1/2 of the people who develop kidney failure have diabetes. That means that the incidence of renal failure in the US is about to rise as well, especially in the minority populations. We need to be more proactive and test people earlier for signs of diabetes and kidney failure – start being more preventative instead of reactive in our health care. How many times have you heard someone say (or said to someone), “I wish I would have known sooner” or “my doctor never told me that I had kidney failure”.
Read this:
Over the 26 years of study, the lifetime risk of developing type 2 diabetes for the average American 20-year-old rose from 20% for men and 27% for women in 1985-1989, to 40% for men and 39% for women in 2000-2011. The largest increases were in Hispanic men and women, and non-Hispanic black women, for whom lifetime risk now exceeds 50%.
From this article: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/08/140812235256.htm
I encourage you to get more specifics on your stage of kidney failure and to find out what you can do to slow the progression of your kidney disease – many times it is getting your diabetes under control.

Renal Diet HQ Share – New Nutrition Facts Label Summary
I have discussed food labels and the changes that are proposed on the podcast, Renal Diet HQ Podcast, and I am excited that part of the proposal includes adding potassium to the listing. While you can find it on some foods, many do not contain this vital information that people with kidney failure rely on.
Read this:
Significant changes to the Nutrition Facts panel on foods & beverages have been proposed in the US and Canada, with the plan to include ‘added sugars’ and update the reference values used to calculate percent DVs of nutrients proving the most controversial.
From this article: http://www.foodnavigator-usa.com/Manufacturers/Nutrition-Facts-revamp-Radical-overhaul-or-a-missed-opportunity
The plan includes some good and some steps that could have gone further to make sure the label has much of the information needed. I say it’s a good start!

Renal Diet Headquarters Podcast 034 – What To Keep In Your Kitchen Cupboard And Making Good Snacks
Podcast #34 Released on August 13, 2014
Send in your questions about all things related to chronic kidney disease to podcast@renaldiethq.com
I have deemed this month as a month to talk about healthy meals at home and using herbs and spices in your cooking – instead of adding salt.
Last week we talked about making healthier meals at home and creating a good grocery list. That way you have healthier foods to start with. We also talked about making a casserole from scratch and how that can be a great fall back meal for you.
And this week we are talking about cleaning out your kitchen or pantry cupboards. What types of foods should you keep and for how long? It’s important to do some good spring or fall cleaning and make sure you aren’t keeping food past it’s prime. I’m also going to talk about making good snacks to take along with you to dialysis or other trips.
So, lets get started. Have you looked at the foods in your cupboard and thought – I wonder when I got that? Or taken out the pudding package and looked at the date only to realize it was a couple of years ago.. That’s NEVER happened to me. Ok, the pudding maybe. Well, I’m going to go over some main foods to look at and how long to keep them.
Now, onto making good snacks to take along with you. Now remember, if you take something that needs to be kept refrigerated, please use a cooler. They make it easy to carry along items. I’m going to go over some quick and easy ways to make nutritious foods to take along.
I am going to the AAKP national meeting – learn more at www.renaldiethq.com/go/aakpmeeting2014
I would love to meet you and I will be available to talk to you and I will have a few books for sale, I will even be doing a book signing hour!

Renal Diet HQ Share – Chefs Are The In Thing In Senior Living
I know you may not be interested in going to live in Senior Living, but I found that the stigma attached to foods either in a hospital or living center have changed. People are demanding healthier and better tasting food.
Read this:
For some new hires, a learning curve is expected when it comes to a higher consideration for dietary restrictions among the aging population. But food trends and a global awareness of health and wellness are aiding in that transition.
From this article: http://seniorhousingnews.com/2014/08/07/dished-attracting-top-chefs-senior-living/
What great ideas! When I was installing room service in hospitals, it was always a shock to people. Now they just expect to like the food where they are staying overnight. So, step it up. And you will find I put the same love into the meal plans I have designed – go here to check out more: Renal Diet Meal Plans

Renal Diet HQ Share – Artificial Vs. Natural Sweeteners
In the realm of renal diets, many people have the desire to cut their calories. I know it can be hard to cut out the things that you love. And I hear time and again that “artificial sweeteners” are bad for you. So is high blood sugars and weight, but I don’t hear much about that. Listen, the bottom line is that I like to read the latest information about how any part of your diet affects you. And this article is reassuring about that:
http://www.cnn.com/2014/08/09/health/natural-sweeteners/index.html?hpt=he_c2
From the article itself:
“One thing’s certain: As a range of new studies continues to show that sugar is a major factor in not only obesity but heart disease, inflammation and other chronic health conditions, many experts now advocate controlling added sugar intake in the diet as much as possible.”
High fructose corn syrup and sugar itself add lots of calories and your body could do without them.

I have deemed this month as a month to talk about healthy meals at home and using herbs and spices in your cooking – instead of adding salt. This week we are talking about a general grocery list and how to make a casserole from the things you have in your cabinet. I also will link to a post I did in the past about creating your own casserole recipe – it’s been very popular.
I found out this week that I will be speaking at lunch at the AAKP conference about “Dining Out with Dialysis”, so if you can’t join us there in Las Vegas at the end of September, I will be sure to bring that information to the podcast. I also will have a dialysis cookbook ready the first of September so people can buy that at the conference and get a copy signed by me if you are there.

Next up – making a grocery list of things that you can have and things that you should avoid. While there is no one size fits all solution for people, some foods should be minimized because of the amount of salt or protein they contain. This week I want to talk about a general grocery list to make sure you have these items in your cupboards and it will help you to make a meal at the last minute if you need to.
Onto the casserole, lets walk through the information on how to make a casserole. Here is my make your own casserole recipe: Make your own renal casserole recipe.

Making Your Own Salad Dressings

Finding salad dressings that are safe for a renal diet can be difficult. Many salad dressings are full of sodium, phosphorus, and other ingredients that just aren’t safe for your restrictive diet. You can still have salad dressing, however. The trick to finding the best kidney safe salad dressings is to make them yourself.
Making your own salad dressings is actually very easy. Here are a few tips and ideas to making salad dressings that are safe for your kidney disease diet:
Oil and Vinegar
Sure, it sounds too easy, but sometimes the simplest solutions are the most delicious. A drizzle of balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil give a burst of flavor without covering up the natural deliciousness of the salad itself.
Honey Lime
For a touch of sweetness, mix together a couple tablespoons of lime juice, one tablespoon of honey, and two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. For a little extra spice, you can even add garlic or cilantro. For some heat, sprinkle in a tiny bit of crushed red pepper and let it sit for a few minutes before using.
Dijon Vinaigrette
Mix together ¼ cup of vinegar (either red wine or balsamic), two tablespoons of olive or canola oil, and two tablespoons of Dijon mustard. Add in some fresh ground pepper and a sprinkle of paprika.
Classic Italian
For a kidney safe version of this classic, blend together ½ cup extra virgin olive oil, ½ cup red wine vinegar, ½ teaspoon sugar, and Italian salt-free seasoning mix. To make your own seasoning, mix together the following dried spices: parsley, oregano, thyme, marjoram, celery seed, garlic powder, black pepper. You want about three tablespoons of seasoning mix. You can even add in a tablespoon of grated Parmesan cheese for an extra special touch.
Creamy Garlic Parmesan
Blend together ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil, ¼ cup reduced fat mayonnaise, two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese, one teaspoon of fresh minced garlic, and black pepper to taste. Refrigerate for a little while before using, and keep leftovers refrigerated as well.
Honey Mustard
Whisk together ½ up of reduced fat mayonnaise, ¼ cup honey, three tablespoons of yellow mustard, and one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. Keep leftovers refrigerated
Even though each of these recipes are considered safe for a chronic kidney disease diet, keep in mind that how much you eat is often just as important as what you eat. Each of these recipes has at least a small amount of sodium, phosphorus, or other ingredients that should be strictly monitored. Keep your serving size to two tablespoons of any of these recipes, and you should have no problem fitting any of these options into your renal diet. Speak with your doctor or nutritionist if you have any questions about particular ingredients or if you have questions about what you should or should not eat.
