Renal Diet HQ Share – Diet is a four letter word

Matheaford

Ever thought that about your diet?  That it’s a short term, time limited and painful period that you need to get through to go back to the life you want to live?

http://www.philly.com/philly/health/fitness/Why_its_a_bad_idea_to_cut_out_food_groups_for_weight_loss.html#mWsTHzvvsGLjeL7k.99

From the article:

When it comes to diets that restrict carbohydrates, the amount of carbs in the diet is less important than the type of carb. The CDC identifies “good” carbs as those that are naturally occurring in plant-based foods (i.e. fruits, whole grains) and provide dietary fiber without added sugars.

This is the part we forget – that we should change our lifestyle, not just part of the food we eat.  It needs to be a long term change, not a short term fix.  You should be looking for ways to eat healthier – more fruits and vegetables, more fiber, less sugars – to make the changes stick.  And treat yourself every once in a while.

Renal Diet HQ Share – Save Money On Healthcare

Matheaford

Need to save hundreds of dollars?  Get healthier.  Easier said than done, right?

http://consumer.healthday.com/diabetes-information-10/misc-diabetes-news-181/getting-healthier-a-big-money-saver-for-people-with-diabetes-690932.html

From the article:

Not only is eating better and exercising healthy for people with diabetes, it can save them hundreds of health-care dollars a year, a new study finds.

Actually, I find that it’s much easier than it looks.  You have to find the motivation inside of you (health, money, looks, kids, etc) and let that drive you.  You will have your “Why” to make it happen.  I find this is what is often lacking for people in trying to start something new and stick with it.  Think about your why, and how it will affect you.  Then start down a path – reading, menu planning, whatever it takes.

Renal Diet HQ Share – Eating Bugs

Matheaford

I’m going to have to admit that eating bugs is way out of my comfort zone.

http://online.wsj.com/articles/celebrity-chefs-tout-bug-cuisine-1408674798

From the article:

At a recent evening cooking master class, he provoked gasps among a group of gourmets when he disclosed that the “minced lamb” they had just eaten was really mealworms. The larval beetles had been marinated in ginger, pear and herbs, and sautéed with garden vegetables.

Ummm, I’m about to barf just thinking about this.  Do you eat bugs?  Have you ever eaten them on purpose?  Besides for a dare?  Have to admit, I would need to be mighty hungry to eat mealworms.

Renal Diet HQ Share – Diet Adherence Can Be Measured With A Blood Test

Matheaford

Even though you probably already knew that doctors could measure your “mean” blood sugar levels based on a lab test – HGA1C tells them your average blood sugar levels over time – did you know they are working on other ways to testing compliance with diet?

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/08/140821090009.htm

From the article:

New results from the Nordic SYSDIET study show that it’s possible to assess dietary compliance from a blood sample. This is especially useful in controlled dietary intervention studies investigating the health benefits of specific diets. So far, such studies have mainly relied on the participants’ self-reported dietary intake, which is often biased, making it more difficult to assess the real health benefits.

But my question for you is – Do you care?  Will it change your diet?  As a dietitian, it would make it a heck of a lot easier because many times people come in and say “I am doing everything you said” when – in fact – they mean for the last 24 hours, not the last 3 weeks or so.  Does knowing your doctor can check your HGA1C change how you eat?  I’m not sure it does…

Renal Diet HQ Share – How Often Do You Snack?

Matheaford

Did you know that snacking is a fairly recent phenomenon?  Snacking can help control overeating and improve your glucose control if you are diabetic.

http://www.delawareonline.com/story/news/health/2014/08/18/snack-ask-truly-hungry/14235229/

From the article:

Research about food habits reveals that in the 1970s, 40 percent of Americans did not consume snacks. The most recent report? The number of non-snackers has dropped to just 4 percent.

So, do you ask yourself if you are hungry or do you just eat?  That’s the key, keeping it for a snack when you are truly hungry.  Next time, do what the author suggests and ask yourself – Am I Hungry?

Renal Diet HQ Share – Natural Claims Can Be Misleading On A Food Label

Matheaford

While I highly encourage label reading, I also highly encourage label understanding.  Know what fits your diet and don’t just believe what banner the food manufacturer slapped on the front.

http://www.latimes.com/health/la-he-natural-20140816-story.html

From the article:

“Natural,” it turns out, doesn’t have a definition — at least not from the Food and Drug Administration, which regulates most packaged food. (The U.S. Department of Agriculture regulates meat and poultry and has its own definitions.)

The attempt to deceive the public can be sad, but if you know what you need for your diet then you won’t care if it’s natural or not – you will make sure it fits your dietary needs.  And reading the ingredients is one of those steps.

food safetyI have deemed this month as a month to talk about healthy meals at home and using herbs and spices in your cooking – instead of adding salt.

Last week we talked about cleaning out your kitchen or pantry to make room for healthier foods and improved grocery lists.

And this week we are talking about using herbs and spices when cooking. What types of spices should you use? It’s important to do some good review of what you have and toss out the ones that are over a year old, and decide what to use in the future.  Spices are not good forever!

So, lets get started. You need some help deciding what to make and what spices to buy – look no further!  Listen on!

Renal Diet HQ Share – Do Doctors Need More Nutritional Education in Med School?

Matheaford

Nutrition plays a huge role in many diseases, from food allergies to cancer, and doctors are starting to sit up and take notice.

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/281149.php

From the article:

Doctors often lack adequate training in nutrition to give patients the care they need, concludes a group of the nation’s leading physicians in the September 2014 issue of The American Journal of Medicine. Diet is the top risk factor for disability and premature death in America, yet physician accreditation standards don’t even mention the word “nutrition” despite very specific requirements in other areas, including procedures.

But I don’t necessarily agree.  I think they should realize they are limited in knowledge and let the professional (Registered Dietitian Nutritionist) take over and educate and guide the patient.  Doctors do not have to do everything – and thinking that they do is a downfall.

Renal Diet HQ Share – Tree Nuts Improve Glycemic Control In Diabetics

Matheaford

Do you like to eat nuts?  I do, but they contain a lot of fat and can be high in calories.  I am not surprised that they help with glycemic control, but eating just a few is hard.  IF you can manage to eat just a few nuts, then they will make you feel full without adding carbohydrate which increases blood sugar.  So you are eating less and controlling your intake.  That equals a lower calorie intake.

http://www.foodnavigator-usa.com/R-D/Tree-nuts-can-improve-glycemic-control-in-type-2-diabetics

From the article:

A review of 12 clinical trials found that daily intake of tree nuts improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Try to portion out a few nuts to add to your diet – remember they do contain protein but can be part of a healthy renal diet.

Living With Kidney Disease: Why Should I Cook Meals At Home

Matheaford

cook at home Living with kidney disease can make life a little more difficult, especially when it comes to mealtime. With a little forethought and careful attention, however, that doesn’t always have to be the case. While at first getting used to your new dietary needs can be stressful, you will eventually get used to it and perhaps even find joy in your new way of eating.

When it comes to deciding whether to stay in and cook at home, or go out, there are many factors that you need to consider. Restaurant eating can be fun and it’s nice to not have to cook or do the dishes, but it is really best to cook your meals at home, for many reasons.

Healthier Fare

When you are living with kidney disease, every ingredient counts. Cooking meals at home means that you can account for each and every ingredient and make everything according to your specifications. This allows for less salt and more naturally delicious spices, which means that not only is your food better suited to your dietary restrictions, but it tastes amazing.

Most restaurants use tons of salt to cook and flavor their foods, sauces, and even vegetables. Even the “healthy” options like vegetable sides and salads have the potential to include surprising amounts of sodium, which can be really harmful for people with kidney disease. In some cases, you can request that dishes be made with no salt, but in many cases restaurants use pre-made sauces and entrees that the salt cannot be removed from.

It can also be very difficult to make the best decisions when it comes to choosing healthy meals when eating out. The temptation of all the rich sauces and decadent desserts is sometimes just too much to avoid. So, overall, cooking at home is a much healthier choice.

Save Money

Especially with the added stress of medical bills and equipment, even a few dollars saved can make a big difference to your budget. Even if you can find restaurants that are able to accommodate your dietary needs and restrictions, you will save the most money by cooking at home. With the price of just one dinner out, you can often buy even a few days’ worth of groceries. So not only does cooking at home help you make healthier decisions, but it can save you money.

It’s Fun

While cooking can seem like a chore at times, it can be a really fun pastime. Cooking at home can be an adventure, using new ingredients to create delicious new recipes and trying new techniques and foods that you have never tried. If you are a beginner, learning to cook might seem like a daunting task, but it really can be a lot of fun and is not as hard as you might think. There are plenty of cooking classes, books, and even how-to videos available all over the internet.

There are many benefits to cooking at home rather than eating out. These are the same for everyone, but are especially important for people that are living with kidney disease. Cooking at home allows you to make healthier choices, save money, and enjoy the joys of creating something delicious.
