Partners for Youth with Disabilities (PYD) works to create a world where young people with disabilities will be able to live with dignity and pride in who they are, and to lead self-determined lives filled with purpose. To make this happen, we build the skills and abilities of young people with disabilities, and increase the inclusivity of workplaces, organizations, and communities.
For over 25 years, PYD has offered the Career Readiness Program, a program for youth with disabilities that addresses barriers to employment, graduation, and academic success in meaningful and measurable ways. PYD’s Career Readiness Program partners with Boston Public Schools (BPS), state rehabilitation agencies, Greater Boston Area high schools, and community partners to serve students through classroom learning, real-world experiences, internships, and professional mentoring. This includes a collaboration with the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission (MRC) to deliver Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) for students with disabilities (ages 14-their 22nd birthday). The Pre-Employment program provides the five required Pre-ETS services including: work-based learning experiences, job exploration counseling, workplace readiness training, self-advocacy/peer mentoring, and counseling on post-secondary education or training programs.
PYD’s headquarters is located in Somerville, MA. The organization currently is working remotely and will continue to adapt work routines as warranted by the COVID-19 situation and the organization’s needs.
Key duties of the Pre-Employment Program Specialist include, but are not limited to:
• Provide classroom instruction and support to students during Pre-Employment Program sessions taking place in schools, various community locations, or virtually.
• Differentiate curriculum, incorporating Universal Design for Learning guidelines, as needed for participants based on tier/skill level.
• Provide one to one instruction for students needing additional supports to access the curriculum.
• Collaborate with team members to determine real world experiences best suited for cohort of students.
• Lead one day community based real-world experiences with employer, community, or education partners.
• Conduct student intakes and assist with program outreach and enrollment collaborating with Program Manager.

• Flexibility and a good sense of humor.
• Must be able to independently navigate to community partner locations throughout the Greater Boston area (e.g. MRC area offices, schools, employer partners, class locations).
• Available to possibly run programming on weekends of evenings.
• Bilingual skill in ASL, Spanish, Haitian Creole or Mandarin desired.

Recruitment and Retention Specialist
AmeriCorps Ambassador of Mentoring
Mass Mentoring Partnership AmeriCorps Ambassadors of Mentoring supports mentoring because every young person in Massachusetts deserves access to quality mentoring relationships – regardless of who they are and where they live. AOMs serve youth serving organizations across the state by strengthening mentor recruitment, matching and training; establishing community partnerships; coordinating marketing campaigns; and improving program design.
MA will have a vibrant and active network of mentoring and youth serving providers sharing best practices and raising their voice to advocate for youth. MMP serves more than 370 programs statewide, supporting over 30,000 youth in quality relationships.
Position Description:
The main components of this project include supporting the recruitment of a diverse pool of mentors and enhancing match support. Specifically, the AoM will increase the number of youth involved in PYD’s one to one and group mentoring programs. They will orchestrate match events (e.g. Mentor Appreciation Night) and create/distribute resources for matches. The role will also involve supporting a caseload of matches. The AoM would lead mentor recruitment efforts which includes attending recruitment fairs, developing recruitment materials and analyzing results. The AoM will support PYD’s Quality Base Mentoring renewal process through which they will assess best practices in mentoring. All of the above will enhance the quality and quantity of youth served.
Project Responsibilities:
● Recruit targeted volunteer mentors through outreach, attending fairs, and creating/modifying recruitment materials
● Oversee monthly newsletter and social media content
● Plan Mentor Appreciation Night
● Support the development and delivery of resources to support youth
● Recruit participants for one-to-one and group mentoring programs
● Assist with planning and implementation of the Massachusetts Youth Leadership Forum

Background

To make this happen, we build the skills and abilities of young people with disabilities, and increase the inclusivity of workplaces, organizations, and communities.
PYD is excited to launch the 2021 Young Leaders Rising (YLR) – a 12-week youth leadership program that leverages both live virtual workshops and an online learning community, in partnership with the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission. The Young Leaders Rising (YLR) program will be offered to high school students throughout Massachusetts, engaging a minimum of 50 youth participants with disabilities on a weekly basis from July through September 2021. The target population will be Massachusetts high school students with any type of disability, ages 14-22.
Summary of Leadership Fellow Role
Leadership Fellows will play a pivotal role in the planning and implementation of the inaugural Young Leader’s Rising program. A group of 10-15 Leadership Fellows will work closely with PYD staff to support YLR participants. Leadership Fellows will assist with recruitment during the spring and will work closely with YLR staff in the planning of YLR sessions as well as the development of YLR online content. Leadership Fellows will receive ongoing guidance and support from PYD staff throughout their service period.
Key Responsibilities

Fellows must have completed high school, demonstrate leadership skills, and be able to commit to dedicating 5-7 hours per week for recruiting participants, planning sessions, leading discussions, serving as panelists, and engaging youth participants as positive role models during YLR program sessions. Beginning in July, Fellows will lead participants in two live sessions per week for a 12 week program. Leadership Fellows will be paid for their time and will receive training to provide peer leadership and role modeling for participants.

The Youth Leadership Program Manager is a newly created position, influential in ensuring agency wide programmatic goals related to youth leadership development. Reporting to the Mentoring Program Director, the Manager will be responsible for the successful delivery of PYD’s summer youth leadership programs, in addition to cultivating new and existing partners to support year-round youth services.
PYD is proud to organize and host the 2021 Massachusetts Youth Leadership Forum (YLF) – a conference
for youth and young adults with disabilities held annually in Massachusetts and other states across the country – in partnership with the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission, the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, the Massachusetts Developmental Disabilities Council, the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services, Boston Public Schools, and numerous collaborators across the state. The Manager will work closely with previous YLF Director to oversee and coordinate all programmatic aspects for a virtual event to take place from June 14th to June 28th, 2021, and future inperson or hybrid annual forums (format pending public health concerns).
Additionally, PYD is excited to launch the 2021 Young Leaders Rising (YLR) – a 12-week youth leadership program that leverages both live, virtual workshops and an online learning community, in Partnership with the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission. Taking place between July and September, the Manager will work closely with the Mentoring Program Director to oversee and coordinate all aspects of programming, including managing up to 15 Leadership Fellows to build and implement this newly

Moreover, the Manager will provide partnership cultivation support to various programs in PYD’s youth services portfolio. As such, the Manager will work closely with the Mentoring Program Director and Career Readiness Program Director to conduct targeted community outreach to support ongoing programs.

Our Ability Podcast: What is Your Dream Your Team

Our Ability talks to the “Your Dream, Your Team” group! Yourdreamyourteam.com is a website designed to be used by anyone and everyone who cares about the education, career, and financial outcomes of young people who have disabilities. It shows job seekers with disabilities how to turn people they trust into a team that supports them along their career journey and puts them in charge. It has everything they need to manage their team, including recommendations on who to invite, what to talk about, and when to meet. It also provides tools that other members of the team (parents, teachers, case manager, bosses…) can use to help keep the team person-centered and focused on career outcomes.
The collaborative work group of the following organizations who created the Your Dream, Your Team website included staff from Change Impact, CDO Workforce, Hempstead Works, and Tompkins Workforce New York. insight, guidance, and content came from an even longer list of amazing contributors from organizations like the New York State Department of Labor, Adult Career and Continuing Education Services-Vocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR), New York State Office of Children and Family Services, New York State Commission for the Blind, New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council, New York State Office of Mental Health, New York State Council on Children and Families, New York Alliance for Inclusion and Innovation, and New York State Business Leadership Network. Full acknowledgements are available online–the list of people to thank is huge! It was funded 100% through a U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration grant. The total cost of the Disability Employment Initiative Round 8 program is 2.5 million dollars.Alan Sessions is a Disability Resource Coordinator with the CDO Workforce New York providing employment and training services to youth with disabilities. Alan also serves on the Board of Directors for the Otsego Chamber. Alan worked for the NYS Department of Labor for 38 years and held a variety of positions including U.I. Claims Examiner, Labor Services Rep, and Business Services Rep. Since 2015 Alan has been working with youth who have stopped-out of college and is currently focusing his energies on facilitating young workers transition from unemployment to employment. He has expanded work experience sites in the healthcare and manufacturing industries.Maria Lombardi is a Disability Resource Coordinator at HempsteadWorks. Her career with HempsteadWorks began as a Career Counselor. Her experience at DOOR as a Disability Resource Coordinator and Certified Work Incentives Practitioner began in 2014 working with adults with disabilities, and has now expanded to serving youth with disabilities ages 14 -24. Her mission and that of her team is to ensure that all participants are aware of the resources and support system that is available to help them reach their goals and achieve their dreams.
Kathy DeAngelo is a Certified Benefits and Work Incentives Planner for CDO Workforce in upstate New York, providing advocacy for Social Security beneficiaries who are seeking assistance to return to employment. She has worked in positions both at the Department of Social Services and at Otsego County Office of Employment and Training, cultivating a unique perspective leading to her nationally recognized success in the role of Disability Resource Coordinator and Sr. Employment & Training Counselor.
Grateful to whoever first said “advocrat,” Mary McLaughlin is currently a community nag/resource for universal accessibility and go-to person for goofy titles (on her resume, it says “Disability Resource Coordinator at Tompkins Workforce New York”). She has wanted to improve the human experience for decades but never saw this path coming.
