blurb
Janessa Rowe is a twenty one year old college girl with little respect for other people. She’s a rich, spoiled brat of a girl who gets her kicks out of humiliating others. When she discovers that her boyfriend of three years has in fact engaged in a physical relationship with someone else, Janessa will stop at nothing to get a little payback. Even if that means using her new rival’s disgruntled fiancée to get what she wants.
Dakota Blackwater is everything Janessa is not. He’s kind, sweet, gentle, and a stand-up guy all in all, but when his girlfriend’s betrayal hurts more than his pride, he agrees to take part in a plan that will test both their self-restraints and their feelings for one another.
Problems arise, however, when Janessa’s interest for Dakota shifts from being a pawn to achieve her ultimate goal, to potential lover. After having her heart broken in the past, the last thing she wants is to get involved in matters of the heart, but how can she follow through with her plan when the more time she spends with Dakota, the less she cares about getting payback? Sooner rather than later they are forced to confront the reality that their game has slowly transformed into something else and that what seemed like a scheme to exact revenge, now comprises both their hearts in ways neither of them anticipated.

Because, even when I tried hard to deny it, there was something about Dakota that I couldn’t just walk away from. There was something about him that I found irresistible. I had no idea what that was or why I insisted on putting myself in a position I might come to regret later, but nothing was lost without a gamble. The deck of cards was in my hands, I just needed to figure out when to make the first move. “Janessa, this could really turn out to be something neither of us is expecting or is ready for,” he said cautiously. “There’s only so much of me I can give.” “Yes, and that doesn’t mean it’ll be bad.” Staring directly into his eyes, I added, “Besides, nothing needs to happen. If it does, I’m sure we’re both adult enough to handle it.” It was not like I was asking for commitment or anything. And nothing was written down so I could either end up with a really good friend, or a good memory of a once lover—hopefully anyway. “We’ll just have to see,” he finally replied. “Good. Now take off your shirt and lie down.     dreamcast   dreamcastgif   bio bios Author Interview

Welcome, tell us a little more about yourself?

Hello, my name is Kristy Centeno and I’m currently a published author with seven full-length novels out in the market and one short story. I’m an avid reader, hard working mother of 5 whose busy schedule keeps me on my feet for long hours, but in spite of this I wouldn’t change it for anything. I think that far from being exhausted, keeping busy is what keeps me motivated to get up and work harder each and every day.

Did you always wanted to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?

Being a writer, in the true sense of the word, was not something I considered that much. I loved to write and did so often, but I never imagined I would be able to transfer my first manuscript into an actual published work one day.

Writing is something I do on the side, during my spare time.

When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?

Perhaps when I finished my first Manuscript, which took almost a year to complete.

Who is your publisher? Or do you self-publish?

Blushing Press.

How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?

It depends on my schedule and how complicated the plot may be. If I have the time and the entire story figured out already in my head, it could take anywhere from a six to eight weeks. If I’m short on time and ideas it might take up to six months.

What can we expect from you in the future? ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?

Payback is Sexy, which is the sequel to Payback is Sweet, has already been delivered to my publisher so anyone interested should keep an eye for it. I’m currently working on several sequels, including book three of the Keeper Witches series.

Do you have a certain routine you have for writing? ie You listen to music, sit in a certain chair?

Yes, I do. There are certain things I need to have before I even start. Alongside me I have to have my tablet (for music purposes), a notebook and pen, and a cup of cold water. I enjoy listening to music while I write because it helps get me in my zone.

The notebook is, of course, to make notes I tend to use in the story later. And I tend to get a little thirsty when I’m typing away so water is a must.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

My favorite genres to read are young adult, new adult, paranormal, horror, thrillers, historical romance, chick-lit, fantasy, some steampunk, and on occasion dystopian.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

Perhaps Europe—France has been a great source of inspiration for me and is one of my favorite countries. I would love to have the opportunity to go there one day—whether in modern times or in the past.

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Find your voice. Don’t give up. Keep pushing forward and always find time to write even if it’s a couple of sentences or a few chapters. Always work to improve your writing skills and don’t be deflated over being rejected. Even the greatest authors of our time were rejected many times before their masterpieces found a permanent home.

Which format of book do you prefer, eBook, hardback, or paperback?

I can never substitute a traditional paperback for an eBook. However, digital books are so much more convenient and take up a lot less space so I have a little of both at my disposal.

What is your favorite book and Why? Have you read it more than once?

Fire and Ice by Kathleen Eagle is definitely number one on my list. The combination of historical romance plus contemporary romance is definitely attention grabbing. The main characters are memorable people, worthy of remembering as if they were real and not just fictional individuals.           giveaway 1 x $ 20.00 Amazon Giftcard. 2 x E-book copies of the book. a Rafflecopter giveaway     author clip_image008Kristy Centeno is an author of paranormal romance, young adult, new adult, horror, and contemporary romance.

blurb Falling in love with the south of France was no surprise to Katherine. Choosing to walk away from her past and start over was completely unexpected. A new country, a new lover, and the promise of a bright future beginning in mid-life … who knew?
Now there were the exciting dreams of restoring the property on the Cap, of beginning a new career, of experiencing the traditions of Christmas in Provence, of falling even more deeply in love with the man who inspired these hopes.
It was all so perfect, until it wasn’t.
She had embraced new possibilities in life and given her heart only to discover something was being kept from her. Something terrible from her lover’s past. Something that could destroy everything.
What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, had become her mantra. Would it be enough?

In the walled courtyard where he had parked, Philippe held the car door open for her. It was a courtesy that seemed to be second nature to him, and Kat appreciated it every time. Then he went to unlock the gate. On his way back to the car, he paused and plucked a folded paper from behind the wiper on the driver’s side. His jaw tightened and he quickly looked around the courtyard. He scrunched the paper and shoved it into the pocket of his jeans before sliding heavily into his seat. Kat had never seen him angry before.
“What was that?” she asked.
“Rien du tout. Nothing, nothing at all,” he answered abruptly.
Putting her hand on his arm, Katherine repeated her question. “I saw the look on your face. It looked like it was something, not nothing.”
Philippe exhaled loudly before he covered her hand with his and lifted it to his lips. “Sorry, Minou. It’s nothing to worry about, and I’m sorry I spoke so sharply.”
“But –”
He squeezed her hand, but he looked pained and his voice had an unfamiliar edge to it. “Seriously, we don’t need to talk about it. It’s just some business from a long time ago that I thought was finished …”
A hush hung in the air. Then Philippe started the engine and they drove off.
Torn between wanting to know what was bothering him but not wanting to push, Katherine stayed quiet as Philippe navigated the town’s narrow streets and drove them into the countryside.
She had learned years earlier, after being scolded and humiliated by James, that she needed to stay out of some matters. Her throat tightened at the memory. His verbal attacks had felt physical, like a kick in the stomach, and completely foreign to her. She had not experienced or witnessed anything like it before she married him. It had crushed her.
Now she struggled to banish those painful memories. She looked straight ahead, taking some deep breaths but saying nothing, until she knew exactly what it was she wanted to say.
She turned to Philippe and touched his cheek lightly. “You know I’m here if you want to talk about it.”
He nodded, staring intently at the road. “Frankly, I hope we never have to talk about it. It’s something that should not be part of our life together. I’m sorry you saw this.”
After a moment, he glanced at her and tried to smile. “I will make it go away, I promise.”

Author Interview

Did you always want to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?

Karen, I’m certain I am much older than most of the authors you interview. I began writing The Bridge Club after I turned sixty just for my real-life bridge club, eight women who have been friends for over forty years.  I was encouraged to publish the novel and, after looking into the process, decided to self-publish. I’ve been many things in my past life, including an educator, but I know I will be a writer for the rest of my life. It’s exciting to begin a new career at this stage of life and I am often asked to speak to women’s groups about that now.

When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?

The day I held the hard copy of my first novel, The Bridge Club, in my hands.

How long did it take to get your first book published?

Since I was not thinking “publish” when I began and then had a lot to learn, The Bridge Club evolved over a few years.

Do you do another job except for writing and can you tell us more about it?

Writing is a full-time job for me.

What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarize it in less than 20 words what would you say?

I have just published my third novel, Promises To Keep, and it is Book Two in the Love in Provence series that began with The Promise of Provence. I received so many emails from readers asking for more of that story, that I turned it into a series. There are six books planned.

In less than twenty words … In mid-life, Katherine’s adventure and rediscovery of love in the south of France continues to unfold with unexpected twists.

Who is your publisher? Or do you self-publish?

I am proud to be an indie author and belong to a number of excellent writing groups that share information and promote each other. There are many viable options available to writers these days that do not involve traditional publishers. In fact, many trad-published authors are switching to the indie world.

How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?

That’s hard to say as it depends on the length of the story. I found I wrote Promises To Keep faster (one year) than The Promise of Provence (two years) because it is a continuation of the story and the foundation was already there.

What can we expect from you in the future?  ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?

For the next while, I will be writing the same women’s fiction as I complete the Love In Provence series.

What genre would you place your books into?

My books are categorized in the womens/romance/travel fiction genres.

What made you decide to write that genre of book?

I think it is important to share women’s stories. I like to write narrative to which women of all ages can relate and I also encourage my readers to embrace change as we get older and to continue to take on new challenges and adventures. I travel a great deal and spend a lot of time in the south of France … really my heart lives there. Location is like a character to me and it plays a large part in my novels. My readers, in general, also love stories set in the south of France and enjoy all the details I include.

Do you have a favorite character from your books? And why are they your favorite?

I have to say a new character who appears in Promises To Keep is my current favourite. Her name is Simone and she is a sprightly 95 years old. Seventy-five years ago she was an undercover agent in the French Resistance and more recently has helped the French National Police accomplish a major drug bust.

How long have you been writing and who or what inspired you to write?

I have been writing for eight years.

Do you have a certain routine you have for writing? ie You listen to music, sit in a certain chair?

I write every day and often for most of the day because of the demands of social media, maintaining a blog and website and responding to requests for guest posts. It’s really a full-time job.

Do you read all the reviews of your book/books?

I pop in to the sales sites (Amazon, iTunes, etc) from time to time to see what readers are saying. Personally, I hear from readers regularly through emails and those are the most important “reviews” for me. Over 1,100 readers subscribe to my monthly newsletter and that is the support I find most inspiring.

Do you choose a title first, or write the book then choose the title?

The title usually evolves as the story is written. For Promises To Keep, I offered a choice of four titles to the newsletter subscribers and they voted. That was a lot of fun and I will probably do it again.

How do you come up with characters names and place names in your books?

Most of the places are real and I often use the names of friends for characters (with their permission, of course)

Which format of book do you prefer, eBook, hardback, or paperback?

I prefer paperback when I am reading print. However, I truly have become a convert to eBooks and read 99% on my iPad or my iPhone. (I’m a little embarrassed to admit the latter but it’s just too convenient at times!)

What is your favorite book and Why?  Have you read it more than once?

I have too many to list!

Your favorite food is?

Sushi

Your favorite singer/group is?

Too many to list! I love all sorts of music and often listen to it while I write.

Your favorite color is?

Turquoise

Your favorite Author is?

I read a wide variety of genres so there are too many great writers I enjoy. I couldn’t begin to choose just one.

  Excerpt

Climbing the three steps, I turn to Nate and state, “I want to cook!” as I push him into his seat in the breakfast nook.

“Are you sure?” he asks me knowing full well I have no culinary skills and we could conjure a meal in seconds. I could attempt to conjure a meal, but to be honest I crave some normalcy.

“How bad can I screw up eggs?” I joke over my shoulder as I’m checking the cabinets for a frying pan. When I find it I open the refrigerator for some eggs. As I open the door, I feel the cold hit my bare legs and I’m suddenly fully aware I’m wearing nothing but a short, sheer, silk nightgown. I’m beginning to feel Nate’s eyes all over me. I take a calming breath, grab a few eggs, and turn to the stove pretending not to notice. I turn the flame on when he finally speaks.

“I feel useless! Can’t I do something?” he asks with a smirk I know implies more than he says.

“Uh, you can make the toast!” I turn around and joke, but he rises. Passing me so close he just barely makes contact, but I can sense his body heat radiating towards me. He pops a few slices of toast into the toaster before I feel his body heat behind me again. My body stiffens when my senses begin to go haywire. Then I feel his fingers touch my waist through my nightgown sliding themselves lightly up and down the side of my body. With his other hand I feel him move my hair to one side, over my shoulder as he gently places a kiss on the back of my neck. His body heat is rising behind me as he kisses down my neck to the tip of my shoulder. I close my eyes relishing in his touch and let my senses feel him. I let myself feel him, his touch, his emotions, his heat. I can sense him, and… smell him? I smell something else, something burning. I look over to see the toast hasn’t popped back up. Regrettably and slowly pulling away, I walk across to the toaster and pull out the black bread.

“I give you one job!” I joke waiving the burnt toast in his direction.

“Sorry, I was distracted!” he defends mockingly looking down like a puppy in trouble.

“Well, don’t let it happen again.” I parentally joke back as I throw the blackened bread at him playfully. He flashes me a heart-stopping smirk before sitting back in his place while I serve him his eggs. We eat breakfast in silence. It’s hard to put into human words, but it’s as if there’s some unspoken connection in the room. One that we are both aware we want, but we don’t want to act on it. So instead, we sit staring at each other, basking in the emotion the other is giving off for what seems like forever until Nate breaks the silence.

“Okay,” he leans back throwing his arms up in defeat, “I think it’s time you put some real clothes on so we can get some actual work done today!”

I giggle looking down at the nightgown that’s hugging my body before getting up to change. I’m almost down the stairs when I hear,

“Aren’t you going to clean up your mess?” Nate asks in his stern training mode voice.

“What?” I flash back around to ask in surprise.

“I think it’s time you try using your mind powers, clean this up,” he replies trying not to move his eyes lower than my hazel ones.

I sigh before closing my eyes, trying to remember how Nate explained using them. I focus my mind on all the dishes being clean and tucked back into their little places in the

cabinets before snapping my fingers. I open one eye first to check the table, when I see all the plates are missing from the table I open the other. I smile proudly, shrug my shoulders before turning around and dashing upstairs to put on something more, appropriate.

A few minutes later, I’m running down the stairs in my training clothes and my hand excitedly reaches for the front door when I hear Nate cough behind me. I turn to see him standing in the dining room. Confused, I walk towards him.

“Aren’t we going for a run?” I ask him pointing over my shoulder to the door behind

me.

“I’m sorry Sera, but we can’t go outside anymore. If you need to release some

energy I made a treadmill in the basement.”

I freeze staring past him and out the glass wall of the dining room at all the trees and the gorgeous cliff and my heart sinks. I can’t go outside anymore? I can’t feel the sun on my face? The wind in my hair? The heartbeat of the earth? I’m a prisoner in my own house. I know this is because of the bear yesterday and that this is for my own safety, but I can’t help feeling my heart drop and I know Nate can see it sprawled all over my face.

“I’m sorry Sera, but until you are trained you shouldn’t be in harm’s way… consciously, not if I can help it.”

I can’t be mad at Nate he’s only trying to protect me, but I can’t help the resentment I feel. I turn around without a word, open the basement door against the side of the staircase, and slam it behind me as I descend the stairs. When I reach the last step, I eye the plain cement basement with the treadmill in the middle of the room. He has set up a flat screen television with a picture of the forest, but it doesn’t help. Looking around, in this dreary training facility I notice there are no windows or air. I can’t help the anger I feel, but instead of thinking about it, I try and focus it. I turn the treadmill up and run. I run as fast as the stupid machine will go. I run, trying to escape all the anger, all the sadness, all the confusion and all the other weird feelings I can’t put into words. I run until all my overwhelming emotions produce a tear. I feel it begin to trace its way down my cheek. As if in slow motion, I see the singular tear drop all the way down to the belt before my foot extends and I step on it. I slam my foot down as if I’m repressing all the depressing feelings, all the anger I harbor. Somehow in all that is going on I realize the old, depressed, weak Sera is gone. She died that night in the middle of the street. The only thing that remains is Seraphina. She is strong, confident, and she is who I need to become. I slam my hand down on the ‘Stop’ button and jump off the treadmill wiping my cheek before heading upstairs, ready to learn how to become who I need to be.

Describe yourself what is your worst and best quality?

My worst quality, Nate would say it’s my selflessness. I ‘m willing to do just about anything for my loved ones. But, I think that’s my best quality. I consider my worst being my lack of indecision, I’m certainly unable to give up the past.

What is the one thing you wish other people knew about you?

I’m shy at first, but once you get to know me I’m actually kinda of funny!

What is your biggest secret something no one knows about?

After a car accident, my Guardian Angel (he’s kind of my boyfriend now) crossed a super thick line when he gave me his blood and now… well, let’s just say I have developed some gifts.

What are you most afraid of?

Inadvertently being the cause of my family’s deaths.

Excerpt

The phantom caress of Freddie's touch conjured long buried memories. Ah, sweet agony. Exuberant in their youth, she and Freddie had explored all the possible sexual positions together. And now...

She fought against a tear. That was all in the past. Gone.

She closed her eyes so she might ignore the overly familiar oil landscape hung over her bed and the other tiny details that recalled the sweet and torrid memories. Her finger caught at a lace ribbon on the vanity top and pulled it across the polished wood surface. Her favorite clock ticked. Time passed. When would the hole in her heart heal? Anger at her weakness surged. She grabbed and held onto it.

"Stop being morbid, Beth. You've got a job to do." Her voice echoed in the vaulted room.

A knock sounded from the outer chamber. She still had an hour before she expected her first guest. The tweeny scurried to answer it.

"She's not quite decent, sir."

Bethina grinned. Leave it to the young ones to state the truth. She stood and turned to welcome whoever it might be, calling out, "Let them in, Laurel. I'm as decent as I'm going to get." It took but a few steps to enter the sitting room.

The girl curtsied and opened the door wider. Sir Arthur stood in the hall, his cap in his hand and eyes wide as he noticed the extravagance of her chamber.

Once again, that phantom emotion sprang to life. She couldn't possibly take another lover. Never. Action would help to stifle her misgivings.

"Come. Come." She gestured him into the room. "It's been far too long since these rooms saw a gentleman not bent on nefarious deeds."

The man blushed, his grey eyes darkened. "You think me harmless, Lady Godwin?"

"Hah!" She strode to the chaise, settled down and reached for the bell. The tweeny reappeared. "What would you like to drink, sir?"

Dressed in a suit of black silk from head to foot, the diplomat evoked an aura of quiet power. He had not moved since pausing inside her threshold. "I like to keep my wits when dining with my enemies and my friends."

Bethina pressed her lips together before ordering, "Small ale for two."

He remained still, his gaze boring into hers. "Do you possess a more modest gown, Lady Godwin?"

She chuckled and leaned forward just a touch. "Unlike you, Sir Arthur, it is not to my advantage to fade into background. A low cut bodice is far more effective in eliciting confidences than sitting near silent in a corner with a shawl up to my chin." Even as she grinned, her melancholy vanished. Thank goodness she had somebody to match wits with.

He coughed and appeared to decide she was not about to eat him for lunch. He stretched his long legs out as he settled in the high-backed chair opposite her perch. He continued to study her. What did he want?

"Now, why the early arrival for supper?"

He turned his attention to the appointments of the chamber; the heavy furniture, damask curtains, oil paintings. Every feminine furbelow Trudy could gather dotted all possible surfaces. Lace, china, clocks, jewelry. It appeared as the room of a very wealthy lady of the nobility. No guest could possibly guess at her sordid past.

"Sir Arthur?"

"Hmm? Oh, yes. Sorry. I wondered if you required any more information before we go in for supper this evening?"

"No, I think not. Sometimes it is better to make your own judgments, true?"

He rubbed his palms together for a moment. "I would have to agree with that."

So, he was avoiding speaking his mind. Really, now was not the time to keep secrets from her.

Laurel appeared with their drinks, served and withdrew.

Perhaps if she taunted him.

Bethina ran one finger along the rim of her glass, collecting the drop of moisture sitting there and then licked it dry. "You really wanted to see what I had chosen to wear. Admit it. What would the famed mistress of King Frederyk do upon her return to court?" She sipped at her ale and decided the castle boasted a fine master brewer.

"Yes. I am taking a huge risk here. Should we misstep, I shall be back in the desert of Uiel and you in that house on the river."

"But you forget, Sir Arthur." She placed her glass on the small table at her right and drew a heart on the tabletop from the glass's condensation. "Not once in two decades was I dismissed from court. I am good at this."

He smiled and relaxed in his seat. "As am I."

She met his steady gaze. Good. His defenses were coming down. She took a deep breath, her breasts pressing against her tight bodice. His grey eyes widened. He swallowed. She followed his Adam's apple down his muscled neck and grinned in appreciation at his wide shoulders. The years had been kind to him. The blood beat in her ears . Her body stirred.

And suddenly it became clear. He desired her. As much as she wanted him.

"I didn't come here for a flirtation." Her protest sounded gravelly.

His cheeks blazed with color. "I did not invite you for such."

She waited, as he appeared to want to say more. In the end, they simply shared a nod each understood. The heat and lust would wait, for now. "I am here for Freddie's niece. She needs me."

He nodded. "Yes, she does. I think, though, that I will enjoy working alongside you."

"Just working?"

The room filled with unspoken words. Heat. Hushed sighs beneath covers.

Author Interview

*What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarize it in less than 20 words what would you say?

The King's Mistress     It is said life only brings you one great love. Not everything they say is true.

*What genre would you place your books into?

I call my royal intrigue books Historical Fantasy Romance (with a little bit of erotica thrown in there)

*What can we expect from you in the future?  ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?

You can expect a little bit of both. I write a weekly NASCAR commentary column for the Frontstretch.com Newsletter--yep NASCAR.  I've dabbled in contemporary erotica, straight out fantasy worlds, a little western...whatever sparks my imagination.  But the world of palace intrigue is one that keeps returning to my muse. Right now I'm working on the first bits of a sequel to the King's Mistress--that is different for me.  I almost never do series.

*What made you decide to write that genre of book?

It's been a lifelong romance between me, the history of royalty, and fantasy.  It kind of was a very generic growth for me to produce my own "Once Upon a Time" tales.  I've often been asked how much research I do for these tales and I have to pause to answer.  The fact is I've been picking up facts and soaking in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages since I could read.  When the History Channel came along...well, all resistance vanished.  Specials on castles, royal families, political realignments in Europe, testing the ancient weaponry, how-to-build-a-castle without power tools...they are all like candy to me.

*Do you have a favorite character from your books? And why are they your favorite?

You know, I believe it is Lady Godwin--the heroine from The King's Mistress.  She is no shy miss.  She has already lived a life full of passion and joy, but she's only just about 40.  She has years ahead of her! I desperately wanted to find her a true Happy Ever After.  With her grit, powerful belief in her own femininity and a true calling in life, it was a joy to bring her story to life.

*Do you choose a title first, or write the book then choose the title?

It all depends on the book.  The King's Mistress titled itself from the first pages written.  Others, like The Eyes of Sin, started with a very plebian title and warped over time into the final title. There's no predictable pattern apparently.

*How do you come up with characters names and place names in your books?

It's another result of those decades studying the past.  Place names are the most difficult when you're building a fictional world. What sounds right? Or wrong? If I'm trying to place the tale in a desert region, I research middle-eastern names in order to find the sound that will become a name.  Sometimes I think I made it up, only to find out the place really exists.  Like seriously, who knew Stoke was a real place? Until my editor told me she lived there...lol  I probably saw the name flash across the screen or on a page at some point in my life.  It sounded right! Unfortunately, I had to ditch that kingdom's name. Ah well...

*Are character names and place names decided after their creation? Or do you pick a character/place name and then invent them?

It's sort of a chicken and egg question.  I guess you can say I name the person second, but it's all part of the character building process.  I know I need a man.  He'll be the villain. He'll be 30 years old and generally look like this. I shall name him...

Last names tend to be the kicker. When creating kingdoms, you no longer are trying to come up with half a dozen characters, you must fill the court!  But try not to make everybody's name the same, even when that's exactly how the world operates.   I've had to rename half the secondary characters while editing, simply to eliminate confusion for the readers and editors.  (Smith, Smythe, Smitson...you get the idea.)

*Do you decide on character traits (ie shy, quiet, tomboy girl) before writing the whole book or as you go along?

Depends on the trait.  Some of the basics you need right off the bat, but those little physical tics or habits are the ones that will surprise me as I work along.  It's a bit like getting to know a new friend.  You think you know them well, and then discover you don't at all.

*Which format of book do you prefer, eBook, hardback, or paperback?

I've become an ebook advocate.  Mostly because I had no more room for any more books. I still love to hold and read the physical versions, but I am moving into the digital world.

*What is your favorite book and Why?  Have you read it more than once?

I can't choose one favorite. But yes, I've read the stack of favorites more than once. Twice. Three times. Four...keep going.  Some are from my teen years, and when I pick them up as an adult, I still find new things to love about them.  It's one of the reasons I will still pick up classics.  If men and women are discussing a book a hundred or two hundred after a tale is written, there must be something worth investigating.  This year I'm working on War and Peace. I know, I'm nuts.

*Do you think books transfer to movies well? Which is you favorite/worst book to movie transfer?

There are reasons to tell a story on screen vs. a book.  And for all the people across the planet who first run to the movie theatre, but then decide there must be something more they want to know about the film they just watched--having both the book and movie is marvelous.  I desperately still want to see The Dragonriders of Pern make it to the big screen. I'm fanatical about The Lord of the Rings in either iteration.  And I admit, I would have never read The Hunger Games if it wasn't for the movie.  What about all the kids who had to read Harry Potter after seeing the flick?

Whether the transfer is faithful (just watch all the permutations of Pride and Prejudice--you'll be appalled) or not, I don't really care if it helps to get people to read. Literacy is far more valuable to mankind vs. the artistic value inherent in an interpretation of a tale. *gets off soapbox*

*Your favorite food is?

Chocolate.  The darker, the better.

Your favorite singer/group is?

Currently Brad Paisley.  But it's like asking me to choose a favorite book. My music mix includes classical, new age, a little metal, disco, Irish, opera, country, pop...it goes on.

*Your favorite color is?

Red. Or is it purple?

Your favorite Author is?

If I can't choose a book, how in the world am I supposed to choose an author? lol

Excerpt

Anastasia's eyes meandered over them. They were young, no older than ten years max. When she attempted to scour their minds, a barrier blocked her. The female Ramanga rushed at Anastasia in Deamhan speed but she quickly moved out of the way, grabbing the back of her shirt and tossing her several feet in the air and onto the roof of a parked car. The Metusba catapulted himself at Remy but he jumped several feet into the air, avoiding his attack.

Anastasia rushed at the Metusba and she sank her teeth into the base of his neck, ripping at his flesh. He screamed, pushed her away, and fell to the pavement on his knees.

From the roof of the car, the Ramanga flew at Remy with fists raised and her mouth opened, revealing her fangs.

“I've never hit a pretty woman before.” Remy smiled.

She swung and he ducked, feeling the brisk wind travel over his head. Her punches continued nonstop but with each punch Remy evaded, the faster the punches came. He finally found an opening and his fist connected with her stomach. The Ramanga's feet wavered but she immediately found her footing and she swerved to the left, avoiding Remy's rising left punch. She raised her knee, striking Remy's in the chin and he fell back on the pavement.

She quickly maneuvered herself on top of him, striking him over and over again with her fists. Remy's head jerked from right to left, feeling his cheeks burn with each hit until Anastasia wrapped her arm around his attacker's neck and threw her off of him.

She helped Remy to his feet and they ran off in Deamhan speed with the two Deamhan following them. Their stride took them under a freeway, splashing through knee high water, and they turned sharply left. They passed through stop and go traffic, side streets, sidewalks, and eventually near the banks of the Mississippi River.

They took the river south, leaving the city, and entered a desolate area filled with rotting cornstalks and farmhouses. They stopped in the quiet area, being only a few miles from Blind Bluff Manor. They turned around but the two Deamhan were nowhere in sight.

“That wasn't hard.” Remy scanned the area across the river. He looked to the left at the tall dirt and rock infested embankment. “I think we lost them.”

Anastasia wasn't so sure. She looked up just in time to see the female jumping down at them. She tackled Anastasia and they both fell into the wild currents of the river.

Anastasia felt the coolness of the water streaming over her face and into her ears. It was an awkward position, knowing that neither of them would drown because Deamhan didn’t breathe. She pushed the female back and she jumped out of the water, just in time to see the male, also in midair, and his right leg connect with the side of her face.

She landed on the sandy shore, swallowing a handful of sand. She turned over to see the female towering over her with a raised stake. For a second Anastasia’s eyes filled with uncertainty. Stakes were meaningless, unless the female aimed for her heart. However, if the female's goal was to incapacitate her, she would strike elsewhere, leaving Anastasia alive for them to toy with.

Remy rushed toward the female but she immediately turned, burrowing the stake into his left shoulder. He stumbled back and the female grabbed the stake, dislodging it, and struck again, hitting just beneath his heart.

Anastasia found her chance to make her move. Brandishing her teeth, she bit down into the female's neck and she pulled back, ripping flesh from bone. Blood gushed from her wound and she fell to the sand. Again, Remy and Anastasia took off down the banks of the Mississippi River. The river curved and winded around, bringing them to another remote spot. This time a freeway ran on both sides of the river with a bridge slightly above them. Anastasia stopped, noticing that stars no longer dotted the sky. In the darkened horizon appeared a tint of red, signaling sunrise. She had to finish this now and get to Blind Bluff Manor. They climbed the embankment and approached the freeway. They ran through the traffic, dodging semi-trucks, cars, and other passing vehicles until they made it to the other side.

Remy held his chest and he bent over. “Good thing these Deamhan can't aim to save their life.” He coughed.

Anastasia examined his wound. “You'll heal.”

They heard the swift steps of the two Deamhan approach them. Again the male launched himself at them but Anastasia tossed him aside. He slammed into a nearby abandoned granary and Anastasia looked from the corner of her eye, seeing the female raise her stake, aiming for Remy's back.

Anastasia quickly moved and she caught the female by her wrist before the stake made its impact. With her other hand she plunged her fist through the female's chest, reaching her heart. The female's eyes widened and she snarled before Anastasia ripped her heart from her chest. The Ramanga dropped to the ground and her body slowly began to dissolve into a puddle of blood, dust, and bone fragments.

Anastasia turned her attention to their male attacker, watching him limp toward them. Dark blood poured from his mouth and a long piece of wood protruded from his stomach. She walked calmly over to him. His heavy eyes wavered. “You failed.” She plunged the stake into his heart and nonchalantly she returned back to Remy, uninterested in watching the Deamhan's body wither away.

In the distance she heard a male’s voice coming from a small house on a hill. The front door opened and she saw the outline of a farmer gripping a shotgun in hand.

“Let's get going. We don't have much time.” She wrapped Remy's arm around her shoulder. She took one final look at the remains of their two attackers before sprinting in Deamhan speed for Blind Bluff Manor.

Character Interview

Character Name:    Remy

Character Bio: Remy’s reasons for heading to Minneapolis and deciding to stay under Nathan’s roof remains a mystery. Karen Swart Intevriew Isaiyan Morrison - Remy

What do you think is the worst and vest quality in a Deamhan?

There are just too many qualities to choose from.  My kind is a complicated yet superb species. As soon as we are sired our only desire is to do what is necessary to remain alive. We don't trust each other. Scratch that. We can't trust each other. It just isn't in our nature.  This horrid trait is what's keeping us back from becoming what we are truly meant to be.

And what do you think Deamhan are truly meant to be?

We are meant to rule over vampires of course! We were created to be better in every aspect of them. We are stronger, faster. They are beneath us. We sit at the top of the food chain. They are our sustenance.

What about humans?

What about them?

Correct me if I'm wrong but Deamhan can also feed from humans, right?

Yes but that is different.

How is that different? You live with a human and supposedly you are also in love with a human.

Let's get something straight. I kill vampires because I want to. I kill humans because I have to. I would never live under the same roof as a vampire. I would never consider a vampire my friend or my acquaintance. They are nothing to me but meals waiting to be devoured.

As for loving a human, that has nothing to do with this interview. My...friendship with Veronica is merely mutual and necessary for what is coming. I'll admit. I wouldn't mind saving myself for her but that human has been giving me the cold shoulder as of late. Next question.

Okay. What is your biggest secret something no one knows about?

Now if I told you it wouldn't be a secret.

What are you most afraid of?

Nothing. We Deamhan are afraid of nothing.

How would you describe your sense of fashion?

I like to keep with the times.  I'm not one of those Deamhan who remain stuck in the past. A simple shirt and pants fits me well but there are nights when I chose to wear nothing at all. *laughs*

I explored nipple piercings at the request of one of my minions. They didn't take at first because of our ability to heal. However, I had them redone again...and again...and again. I can now say that they last up to three nights now.

What do you considered to be your greatest achievement?

Surviving for this long. Knowing my track record, I should win some kind of award or something.

I was told that Deamhan don't understand the idea of happiness. Is that true? If not what is your idea of happiness?

Happiness you say? I can't speak for all Deamhan but I'm content with my existence. I enjoy living and walking among all you humans and your cities. I'm happy when I've had my fill of you for the night. If you can define your idea of happiness then I will tell you more of what makes me happy. I assure you, it won't be the same.

Which living person do you, most despise?

Oh, there's just so many to chose from. Give me a moment to think...Oh!

Anastasia has been a thorn in my side lately but I will admit, she's growing on me...like a rash. I also don't care for that vampire, Alexis, but she does have a great rack, as you humans say. Oh and there is also The Brotherhood.  They are an annoying group who adds nothing good to the humans they say they are trying to protect.

So there are a group of humans out there who know about Deamhan?

Not only do they know about my kind, they have also made it their goal to eradicate us. They say they are researchers and only watch us from a distance, cataloguing our lives from the moment we are sired to the moment we meet our ends. But they are liars and weasels who have tried to extinguish us more times than I can count. They've hunted us and joined with vampires to destroy us and now they are in league to do it again.

What is the quality you most like in a man?

The arms. I love a man with defined and muscular arms.

What is the quality you most like in a woman?

The eyes. You can tell a lot about a woman from gazing into her eyes. They show and hide information that's not easily accessible unless they want it to be known.

What is your greatest regret?

I don't regret anything I've done or anything I will do.

What is your motto?

While we live, let us live.

Excerpt

Menos was darker than usual: its clouds as black as the shadow of fear that haunted Mouse. The city felt more menacing to her. She saw shadows in every corner, noticed the glint of every ruffian’s blade or slave’s chain as though they were all intended for her. The warning of Alastair played inside her skull on a loop of nightmare theater.

A hand over her mouth startles her awake, and she twists for the dagger in her pillowcase until she recognizes the shadowy apparition atop her, who hisses at her to calm.

            “Alastair?” she gasps.

The hand unclenches and the willowy shadow retreats to more of its own; she can only see the scruff of his red beard in the dark.

            “Get up, Mouse. Get dressed.”

Her mentor sounds annoyed or confused; she is each, but finds her garments quickly enough anyway.

“I don’t like good-byes, so let’s not call this that,” Alastair says with a sigh. “But it will be a parting, nonetheless. You need to go low. Lower than you’ve ever been before. A new name won’t be enough. You’ll need a new face. I don’t know how or who, but the sacred contract of our order has been broken. Your safety has been bought.”

Mouse knows the who and how, and as she glances up from her boot-lacing to explain to her mentor her predicament, she sees that he is gone. Just empty shadows, echoing words, and the sound of her heartbeat drowning out all the rest.

She expected the dead man and his icy master to emerge from the dim nooks and doorways of the buildings she passed at any instant. With a hand on her knives and a fury to her step, she swept down the sidewalk; no carriages for her today, as they were essentially cages on wheels—too easy to trap oneself in. With its sooty storefronts and their wrought-iron windows, its black streetlamps that rose about her like the bars of a prison, Menos was constricting itself around her, and she had to get out.

You’ve survived worse than the nekromancer, she coached herself, though she wasn’t certain that was true. She hurried through the grimness of Menos, dodging pale faces and quickening her step with every sand. By the time she arrived at the fleshcrafter’s studio, she was sweating and stuck to her cloak. She looked down the desolate sidewalk and up the long sad face of the tall tower with its many broken or boarded-over windows. When she was sure she wasn’t being pursued by the phantoms that her paranoia had conjured, she pulled back a rusted door that did not cry out as it should have, given its appearance, but slid along well-formed grooves through the dust. She raced through the door and hauled it closed.

It was dark and flickering with half-dead lights in the garbage-strewn hallway in which she stood. Mouse picked through the trash with her feet, tensing as she passed every dark alcove in the abandoned complex. Hives, these places were called, and used to house enormous numbers of lowborn folk under a single roof. In Menos, even the shabbiest roof was a desirable commodity, so the building’s ghostly vacancy meant that it likely was condemned by disease at one point. Soon the stairwell she sought appeared, and she tiptoed down it, careful not to slip on the stairs, which were slick with organic grunge.

Couldn’t have picked a nicer studio, she cursed. I’ll be lucky if this fleshcrafter leaves me with half a lip to drink with. Lamentably, speed and discretion were her two goals in choosing where to have her face remodeled. Such stipulations cut the more promising fleshcrafters off the list and left her with the dregs. She hadn’t put much thought into what she would have done, or even if she would end up hideously disfigured. Monstrous disfigurement could even work in her favor, as she bore an uncanny resemblance to that crow-eviscerated woman whom she suspected was the object of the nekromancer’s dark desire. I’ll take ugly over dead. Over whatever he has in mind for me.

Character Interview

Character Name: Caenith, The Wolf

Character Bio: A smith of Eod. Under his fearsome, raw exterior hides an animal, and a dreadful wrath. Caenith is a conflicted creature: a beast, a man, a poet, a lover, and a killer. Caenith believes himself to be beyond redemption, and passes the years making metal skins and claws for the slow-walkers of Geadhain while drowning himself in bitter remorse. He does not know it, but Morigan will pull him from his darkness and make him confront what is most black and wicked within him.

clip_image001

Describe yourself what is your worst and best quality?

I am patient, perhaps the most patient man in all Geadhain. When one lives forever, he either learns patience or indulges madness. If we would speak of madness, know too, that I have danced with the deepest darkness. Many times in my long life I have given in to the blood-thirsty desires of my animal. I have made fatherless more men than I can count. Their faces all blur to insignificance on the red portrait of my misdeeds. I would say that I regret their murder, but I do not. I am the Wolf. I kill. It is in my nature.

What is the one thing you wish other people knew about you?

Like any Wolf, I can be gentle, and noble, if given the chance. I never betray a loyalty. My appearance does not tell the truth of my soul.

What is your biggest secret something no one knows about?

Once, I was a poet. I played at being a man and took up the life of a scribe, and wordsmith; penning religious odes for the veiled confessors of Carthac. I stayed to watch that city and its wicked masters burn in the fires of rebellion. To my knowledge, none of my work survived the flames.

What are you most afraid of?

Another thousand years of watching the world rust of its green beauty.

What do you want more than anything?

I do not know how to stop the echoing in my heart. I have no answer for you, slow-walker.

What is your relationship status?

I am a lone wolf.

How would you describe your sense of fashion?

Fashion? Pfft! You speak of the garish makeups and frippery in which you slow-walkers adorn yourselves? Prancing about like plumed, clucking cockerels? For what? To mate? There are simpler ways. Take off your clothes and taste sweat, feel heat and drink spit. I wear what clothing is necessary to pass as one among your kind.

How much of a rebel are you?

You inquire under the presumption that I honor the rules of man, or the rule of the Immortal Kings. I honor neither set of laws. I am a child of Geadhain. I bow to the call of the moon. I rule her as much as she rules me.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?

I do not adhere to your slow-walker conventions of greatness. Nor do I feel my deeds are to be judged by the likes of you.

What is your idea of happiness?

A ripe, white moon. Blood in my throat. The song of steel as it is hammered. All of these things bring me pleasure.

What is your current state of mind?

I am calm. I am often calm. The moon rises again in a few days. Ask me then.

What is your most treasured possession?

My skin and my freedom.

What is your most marked characteristic?

A man once said that I possessed the cold, terrible gaze of a wolf. He was correct, and I thanked him for his compliment.

What is it that you most dislike?

This new age with its technomagik and progress. Men do not see how their ambition scars the world. Mother Geadhain weeps.

Which living person do you, most despise?

The Iron rulers of Menos. All of them are as vile as they are damned.

What is your greatest regret?

I…do not ask me that. (growls)

What is the quality you most like in a man?

Honor. And a lack of pretense.

What is the quality you most like in a woman?

Strength. A soft woman is of no use in the wild.

Who is your favorite hero in fiction?

I do not read fiction. The age of legends is over. Let us rest and be forgotten.

Which living person do you most admire?

Magnus. Of the many great sorcerers I have seen, the Immortal King does not punish Geadhain with his magik, but coaxes beauty from her instead.

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?

Nothing. I am what I am.

What is your motto?

I am death. I am the Wolf. Worship and fear me. You live only because I have not hunted you yet. I live because I am life. I am unbound by grief. I am alone. I am lord of all…Oh, I seem to have scared you. That glazed expression, the waft of your fear, I know these signs. My apologies. I shall leave you be. Since you have been so gracious with your time and not quite irritating questions today, I shall leave you with a gift. In three days, the moon rises. Bar your doors and windows, slow-walker, and lay a sprig of ivy at your doorstep. Even when I am blind, even though I am the beast, I shall leave you safe for this one night of my hunt. Farewell, and do not forget. It would be wise that you didn’t…

excerpt Franco Callahan slammed the door to his Delancey Street townhouse and hurried into the April morning, glancing at his watch as he ran down the steps. He was late. He’d wanted to get to work early. He had a busy day ahead. His mind on the Connecticut casino bid and the pile of work waiting on his desk, he strode along the uneven pavement to his black Mercedes parked at the other end of the narrow street.
He answered his ringing phone as he hurried toward his car, and heard a deep male voice rasp, “You didn’t get our message the first time, Callahan. You’ve forced us to play dirty. Give us the money and we might let you live.”
The menace in the stranger’s voice chilled Franco, tightening his gut. “Who is this?”
“Maybe you’ll listen to our new message.” The call disconnected.
Franco stared down at his phone.
An ear-splitting boom rent the air, vibrating the ground beneath his feet. The blast sent Franco on his rear, the breath knocked out of him. Ears ringing, struggling to sit, he saw a ball of fire at the end of the street. Flames licked at what was left of his car.
<><><>
One Week Later
“Heard you need a bodyguard, Callahan.”
The sultry female voice jerked Franco’s attention from his computer. He swiveled his chair and glanced toward his office doorway. A thrill shot through him at the sight of the petite redhead, arms folded across her chest, leaning impudently against the doorjamb. He tamped down the excitement she always aroused in him and narrowed his eyes.
“Well, if it isn’t Josephine Fortune. What are you doing here?”
She stepped into the room and deposited her duffel bag on the floor. “I’m real glad to see you too, Callahan. And the name is Jo.”
The tough little spitfire rarely wore anything other than camouflage fatigues, T-shirts, and combat boots. He couldn’t help noticing the way her khaki-colored T-shirt stretched over her firm breasts and the way her full, pink lips—kissable lips—parted. She wasn’t his type he reminded himself, not for the first time in their five-year association. His type was tall, blonde, leggy, and a tigress in bed—not a fireball more comfortable on the shooting range than between satin sheets. He shot her an insolent smile, retreating into the playboy persona he showed the world.
Her green eyes, translucent and light as a spring leaf, studied him. “Logan and Doriana sent me to protect your sorry ass.”
His eyes never leaving hers, he stood. “I told them I don’t need protection. I’m sorry you had to come all this way. Go back to Tucson.”
Tension in every line of her toned body, she moved closer. “I don’t like this any more than you do, Callahan. Think I want to spend my time babysitting some spoiled playboy? As far as I’m concerned, if one of your bimbos has it in for you, that’s your problem.”
“Then leave.”
“No can do. Logan’s my boss. He sent me to keep someone from killing you and that’s what I’m going to do.”
The fear that was his constant companion these days pressed against his chest. Masking his feeling of vulnerability, he flattened his palms on his desk. “Tell Logan and Doriana thanks, but the Philadelphia police are handling the case. I don’t need a bodyguard.”
She moved even closer and leaned over the desk until their faces were inches apart. The woman had guts. He had to hand that to her. He wondered if anything scared her. A familiar scent surrounded her, teasing his nostrils. Grapefruit? On her the fruity aroma smelled tantalizing and seductive. Jo Fortune, seductive? He moved back from temptation.
She straightened and stepped away from his desk. “Sure, I’d rather be in sunny Arizona than rainy Philadelphia. But Doriana’s not too keen on her brother getting killed. So you’re stuck with me until the cops get whoever’s after you.”
He studied her and something stirred in him, the same feeling he’d had minutes ago; the feeling he’d gotten the first time he’d met her at Logan and Doriana’s wedding five years before, and every time after that. As an honorary member of the Callahan-Tanner clan, Jo was present at family holidays and functions. For all her smart mouth and bluster, he recognized the hurt that shadowed her eyes and softened her generous mouth. A part of him wanted to find out who put that hurt there and to take it away if he could. Jo brought out a protectiveness in him that scared him nearly as much as the thought of someone killing him.

Thank you to Portals to New Worlds, for having me today. Cool name. They’ve asked me to write whatever I want. Always dangerous to give writers carte blanche, but I’m glad to oblige.

I’m a fan of David Letterman and his Top Ten. I decided to write about my Top Ten Favorite Romance Heroines.

I love the heroines in all of my books, of course. To name a few: Doriana Callahan from Logan’s Redemption, Redemption Book 1. Logan Tanner disappeared from her life sixteen years ago, but she’s never stopped loving him. Now, he’s back in town. She’s kept an explosive secret from him all these years. What will happen when he discovers it?

Jo Fortune from Franco’s Fortune, Redemption Book 2, is a security expert with a horrid past who hides behind a tough façade. Inside, she’s vulnerable. Her job is to protect wealthy playboy Franco Callahan from whoever is trying to kill him. She finds protecting him is easier than protecting her heart. Will he discover her secret and reject her because of it?

Anita Santisi from Luke’s Temptation, Redemption Book 3, was betrayed and hurt badly in the past. Whenever a man gets close, she walks away, protecting her heart. But she can’t walk away from her sexy new neighbor, Luke Corrado, a mysterious man with his own dark past.

Here are my Top Ten Favorite Romance Heroines, which may not be ones familiar to a lot of you, but these are characters whom I’ve never forgotten:

10. Diana Hudson, aka Queenie Baby, from the Queenie Baby series by Christina Burke and Gemma Halliday. These books are hilarious. I love Queenie Baby’s sense of humor, and the fact that trouble follows her wherever she goes.

9. Maddie Springer from Gemma Halliday’s High Heels mysteries. Maddie is hilarious, but she’s also a klutz who gets her long-suffering hunky cop husband into dangerous scrapes, like a modern-day Lucille Ball.

8. Ginny Brandon from Rosemary Rogers’ Sweet Savage Love. The reason Ginny’s on this list is because I love the book, and it’s the first romance I read that contained explicit sex. I read it over and over. I might not like Ginny today because she’s a spoiled brat. But I loved her when I first read the book because this book opened a whole new world for me.

7. Shanna Trahern from Shanna by Kathleen Woodiwiss. This was the second romance I read that had explicit sex. I read this one over and over too. Shanna isn’t as spoiled as Ginny, but she is a bit spoiled. Sweet, Savage Love and Shanna hold special places in my heart.

6. Claire Randall from the Outlander series. Jamie Fraser from that series is my favorite romance hero. I had a little trouble relating to Claire. She seemed cold at first, but then I learned to really like her as her romance with Jamie burned up the pages. Claire is smart and resourceful.

5. Callie Michaelson from One Wore Gray by Heather Graham. She’s a strong, independent woman in the middle of a raging war. Loyal to the Union, she fights her attraction to the Confederate officer who wins her heart and her respect.

4. Elspeth Lamond from Bride of the MacHugh by Jan Cox Speas. This is one of my favorite books, a book not many have heard of. It’s a historical romance written in the 1950’s and set in the Scottish Highlands. The sex is behind closed doors, but it’s one of the sexiest books ever, much like Gone With the Wind, movie and book. You didn’t see behind those doors but you had a pretty good idea of what Rhett and Scarlett were doing. My girlfriend and I read Bride of the MacHugh when we were teens. We spent hours trying to figure out what Elspeth and the MacHugh did in that bedroom. This was back in those innocent days when teens really didn’t know much about sex. In the book, Elspeth is recovering from an illness and visits relatives in the Highlands. When she falls in love with the powerful MacHugh, head of his clan, her feelings scare her, but she has the courage to follow her heart.

3. Celia Marsdon from Green Darkness by Anya Seton. This is my favorite book of all time. Celia, in her current life, is an unhappy woman desperate to save her marriage. I admired her courage to work for her marriage, but also the courage to allow a hypnotist to regress her to a murderous past life that would help her solve her present-day problems and find happiness.

2. Douglass Montgomery from A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux. This is one of my favorite books. I love the way Douglass starts out as a bit of a doormat for her jerk boyfriend, but grows to a strong courageous woman by the end of the story.

And my favorite romance heroine:

1. Tamsen McCleod of the McCleod sisters in Aola Vandergriff’s Daughters of the South Wind series. I love this series and I love Tamsen. She’s strong, a fighter who will risk anything to protect her sisters and keep them out of harm’s way. She and Dan Tallent make one of my favorite romance couples. This is an author and a series not many seem to know, but I loved every one of these books that went from the 1800’s Wild West to WW1 Europe.

Who are your favorite romance heroines?

Thanks again to Portals to New Worlds for having me.

Excerpt #1

As I descended the few stairs to the beach, I was surprised to see the large golden retriever as well as the mysterious Zachary. I stood for a minute, observing him in private. He was standing, barefoot in the surf, staring out over the water as his dog frolicked close by. Zachary was a tall, dark silhouette against the sand and stormy, strange-colored sky of the late afternoon. Wearing dark jeans and the same overcoat that showed off his broad shoulders, a beanie once again pulled low on his head, he stood with his hands in his pockets, motionless, as the water swept across his bare feet. The rolled-up edges of his pants were dark with the ocean spray clinging to the material. I shivered just watching him. The water had to be freezing. Seeing her new friend, Dixie let out a happy, little yelp, which had the retriever bounding over to her, once again licking her head and huffing as he greeted her. The two of them took off, heading right toward Zachary. He leaned down, greeting Dixie, allowing her a sniff, then patted her head and straightened up. He didn’t turn around or acknowledge my presence. With a roll of my eyes, I walked forward, stopping when I was close enough to be heard, but not have my feet in the frigid water. I waited, but he said nothing, ignoring me completely. Unfriendly indeed. “That’s Dixie—my dog.” His chin dipped with a brief nod. “Elliott.” I couldn’t keep the sarcasm out of my voice. “You or the dog?” His lips quirked at the edges. “My dog.” “I’m staying at the Harpers’ house.” He nodded. “I’m not Karen—I’m a friend of hers.” His sarcasm was thick. “I realize. I have met her—more than once. There is a slight resemblance, perhaps, but I can see you aren’t her. Your hair rather gives that away.” “I’m sure it was a thrill for her,” I murmured, surprised to hear the trace of a British accent in his voice. I chose to ignore the remark about my hair. Nothing. “They’re letting me stay here for a while.” “How kind.” I shook my head. Was he for real? “I’m Megan. Megan Greene.” Silence. I searched my brain for something to say. “Looks like a storm’s coming in.” “Observant.” I frowned at him—definitely rude. His voice, however, despite its unwelcoming tone, was low and rich sounding, his subtle accent curling around the words when he spoke. I wanted to hear more than a few monosyllables from him, and to hear him say my name. “Aren’t your feet cold, Zachary?” He glanced down and shrugged, still facing the water, not even acknowledging the fact I knew his name. “Not really. I’m used to the cold.” I decided to try a different subject—maybe one that would open him up a little. “I saw your work at the gallery in town; you’re very gifted.” Again, he nodded. “Your Tempest painting is”—I searched for the right word—“exceptional.” “It’s not for sale.” Disappointed at his words, I studied his partially hidden profile. Again his jaw was covered in stubble, and all I could really see was his nose and the downturned set of his full mouth. Some wayward hair sticking out from his beanie was blowing in the wind; its color not easy to make out. I was sure it was dark, but I couldn’t see enough to determine if I was correct. I wanted to step forward, force him to look at me, but there was something about his tense stance that screamed “back off.” He was obviously uncomfortable with me being this close, so I remained where I was, even though I felt some bizarre sort of need to get closer. I had to struggle not to move beside him, slip my hand into his, and offer him some sort of comfort; to loosen the tense set of those broad shoulders. I shook my head at the strange urge. “Would you perhaps reconsider?” “No. Jonathon already inquired on your behalf. I have it on loan to the gallery as a personal favor. It’s not for sale—at any price.” I smiled, attempting to tease him. “Everything has its price, Zachary.” I wasn’t prepared for the venom in his voice when he spoke. “I’m fucking aware that’s the way most of the world works. I don’t conduct my life that way.” Then he turned and walked away, his long strides eating up the distance, his unbuttoned coat billowing out behind him. He whistled for Elliott, who dropped the stick from his mouth and chased after his master. Both Dixie and I stood staring at the retreating figures. Not once did Zachary pause or look back, while Elliott raced ahead of him. I waited until he had climbed the stairs and disappeared from sight, never taking my eyes off him. I blinked and looked over the water. Now I could say I had met my neighbor. That went well.

Excerpt #2

Megan stood gazing at me, her head shaking slowly back and forth, but she didn’t move. “You don’t mean that.” Why wasn’t she listening to me? Why wasn’t she leaving? “Get out of my house. Leave.” I pointed to the door, making sure she understood. “Now.” “You wouldn’t send me out into a storm, Zachary. Your words are just empty threats to try and get me to hate you.” She came closer, her voice soothing and calm. I barked out a harsh laugh as I stepped back. “You should hate me.” “I don’t.” She edged forward again. I frowned at her. Why was she coming closer? She should be backing away; even if she knew I wouldn’t throw her out of the house, she should want to move as far away from me—from my hideous face—as possible. “What are you doing?” “I’m not afraid of you.” She moved forward, closing any remaining distance between us to mere inches. I tried to step back, but I had nowhere to go, my back hitting the stone of the fireplace. I dragged in a shaking breath, only to have my already overloaded senses fill with her warm scent, shutting my eyes as it settled around me like a soothing blanket. When I opened them a moment later, it was to her wide, dark gaze. There was no revulsion or pity in their depths; only a simple calm, beseeching stare. She looked vulnerable as we gazed at each other, the room around us ceasing to exist. Why was she looking at me like that? What did she want? “Zachary,” she whispered. It was too much. She was too close and too— I lifted my hands to push her away, except when they wrapped around the top of her arms, it was as if they had a mind of their own. Time seemed to stop as my fingers caressed the smooth, silky skin not covered by her T-shirt; the warmth of her burning through my fingers to my very core. My arms flexed as they dragged her closer until our faces were almost touching. Her hands held tightly to my loose sweater, bunching the fabric in her small fists so hard, I knew the cuts on her palms would reopen. I knew her blood would seep into the material, forever staining it with her essence. It didn’t matter; I couldn’t let go of her. I held her so close it was as if I was trying to mold her into my skin and make her part of my body. Her hot breath washed over my face, and I could hear my own ragged, harsh breaths filling the room. Still, neither of us said a word as we stared, clutching and holding each other, the heat between us burning brighter every second that passed. A small whimper escaped her lips, a pleading, needy sound and I was lost. My mouth covered hers roughly and I jerked her flush to me, not allowing a sliver of space between us. I groaned into her wet, warm mouth as I felt her hands slip into my hair, holding me close to her face. Her tongue was like silk on mine as we caressed and tasted, our tongues stroking and entwining. The taste of her was as sweet as I knew it would be, her lips as soft and her effect on me crippling. I plunged my hands into her hair, tilting her head to deepen the kiss, directing her where I needed her to go with my touch. Megan gripped me tighter as I claimed her; needing and wanting more. Her heart hammered powerfully in her chest, so I knew she could feel mine as well. Small sounds from deep in her throat filled my ears as I ravished her mouth, lost in the heat and wonder that was Megan.

Excerpt #3

“Don’t feel sorry for me,” I snapped. I hated pity. “I’m not feeling sorry for you. I said I was sorry people chose to be unkind because of your scars. There’s a difference,” she snapped right back. A dull flush tinged her cheeks, her eyes glinting and fiery with annoyance as she frowned at me. Despite her anger, I found her incredibly attractive and my lips quirked. “What?” she spat at me. I shook my head as I chuckled and grabbed the bottle of wine to top up our glasses. I might be low on food, but I never ran out of wine. “I was thinking how I wanted to capture you on film again, looking exactly like that.” “Like what?” “Like a kitten trying to act like a tiger. All growls and swipes of your little paws as you hiss at me, putting me in my place.” I reclined back, taking a deep swallow of my wine as I gazed at her over the rim of the glass. “You’re very sexy when you’re angry. Did you know that?” “Stop it.” “It’s true. Your eyes flash, and the color on your cheeks is sublime. Your glare, which I’m certain you mean to be angry, is more of a turn on than anything.” “I am angry at you. You twist everything I say.” I tilted my head in acknowledgment. “I know. It’s a bad habit I picked up after years of being lied to.” Lifting her hand, I kissed the knuckles. “I apologize. I’ll try harder.” I placed another kiss on her skin. “But I still want to capture you when you’re angry.” Rolling her eyes, she stood up, taking our empty plates. “Somehow, Zachary, I have a feeling you’ll get what you wish for without much effort.” She sighed as she walked to the sink. “You seem to be able to make me angry faster than anyone I’ve ever met.” I closed the distance between us in two large steps. Cupping the back of her neck, I brought her mouth to mine. “Anger is simply another form of passion,” I murmured against her lips. “A tiring one,” she returned in a whisper. “And I won’t ever lie to you.” “Everyone lies.” “No, they don’t. Whatever world you were in where they did, I’m glad you’re out of it.” She paused, frowning. “I’m glad you’re here—with me.” I didn’t want to talk anymore. I didn’t want to think about the past, or groceries, or even what was going to happen tomorrow. All I wanted was to lose myself with her again. To block out everything else. I picked her up, striding down the hall with her cradled in my arms, my mouth covering hers. She wanted me to be happy. Having her wrapped around me, buried inside her, made me happy.

Dreamcast

My Cast of Characters for Beneath the Scars… Zachary Adams – Henry Cavill His eyes are so expressive and he has that sense of ruggedness about him that reminds me of Zachary. There is something strong about his demeanor and when he smiles it is like the sun coming out. He was the perfect choice. bts_dc_2 bts_dc_1 Megan Greene Alexis Bledel That pretty next door look, with a beautiful smile. Add a few freckles and brown contacts, she is exactly as I pictured Megan. bts_dc_4 bts_dc_3 Jared Cameron …Ryan Gosling Good looking and he knows it. He knows how to use it. I think he’d portray a great Jared with enough smarminess to give you the shivers. bts_dc_5 Karen Harper … Anne Hathaway Anne portrays that confident beauty Zach described. Sure of herself, outspoken and loyal. All traits I think she possesses. bts_dc_6
