This week I wrote about a recent writing day for Cynthia Newberry Martin and her blog Catching Days

It involves this close-up picture of me trying to sleep when my son wakes me up at 5:45 AM.

“It reminded me once again that we desperately lack a full-throated defense of this runt of the grammatical litter. We need an outright celebration of adverbs, and it is that celebration that I offer—stridently, boisterously, unapologetically.”

- Colin Dickey passionately, unabashedly defends the adverb. (via millionsmillions)

Watching Barcelona by Whit Stillman, which is finally out on Blu-Ray through Criterion.

Fred: Plays, novels, songs - they all have a “subtext,” which I take to mean a hidden message or import of some kind. So subtext we know. But what do you call the message or meaning that’s right there on the surface, completely open and obvious? They never talk about that. What do you call what’s above the subtext?

Ted: The text.

Fred: OK, that’s right, but they never talk about that.

Very excited to share that Why We Came to the City will be on this excellent list of New York City novels in this coming Sunday’s issue of The New York Times Book Review!

It’s a huge honor and a delight to see my “love letter to Manhattan” grace the pages of this incredible book review! Look for it in print on Sunday!

What advice do you have for a writer struggling to acquire an agent? My goal is to turn my blog into a novel. I had one agent tell me to reach out again when I had a large following large "enough to impact sales".

Hi! I have found more luck with agents who seem interested in my work based on the strength of the writing, though I think that having some experience using social media and building an online following helped. I did a lot of writing for other literary blogs like Electric Literature too, which may have helped some too. But at the end of the day I think it has to be the writing that they are most excited about. Hope that helps!

The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards is an amazing book. The copy that I own was not even mine to start with. At first it was my friend Aya's, who gave it to Marwan to read. Marwan was reading another book at the time, so he gave it to Elian. One day, when w

That sounds like the best possible way to find it (other than at an airport maybe!) I’m so glad that you have enjoyed it and that you are sharing it with others! (I’ve got a new one out this year if you are ready for more!) ;) Cheers!
