Well, hello, everyone!  An official “Happy New Year” to you all!  A shout-out to all the new followers this last month: such a pleasure to have you stop by!  Work’s been a bit intense as of late, so I’ve been putting off recs for a bit.  This one will be a quick one, but I didn’t want to leave you hanging.  Apologies.

What I like best about this piece is that it is overflowing with emotions. There are so many emotionally charged words in this one that you can’t help but feel as overwhelmed as both the main characters as you progress throughout the story.  I like how it’s told from John’s perspective.  From what I see, John is as much of an enigma as Sherlock is: he saves lives, but he can take them; he is crass, but sweet; he is stubborn, but accommodating - a duality in most cases, so who’s to say that his emotional connection to others can’t swing both ways as well? We get a very good read on John Watson in this, and through his eyes we readers must also infer Sherlock’s unclear and sometimes confusing actions.

The ending of this story is incredibly sweet (in addition to steamy). A great read again by @silentauroriamthereal

Can highly agree, one of my favourites to re read and as always sheer perfection by @silentauroriamthereal

Y'all remember that time when Mary was ready to cut everyone’s throats?

Well, we’ve got that moment in TAB too!

She is closer to the jackknife now!!!
They are discussing a murderous wife and Sherlock sees Mary as what she really is: a dangerous threat in the heart of Baker Street.

The color schemes of John’s outfits are similar too

Dear government secret service people: Yes, I’m aware that I currently have no fewer than six drug-related tabs open including google searches related to getting drugs past sniffer dogs and shielding drugs in metal. Despite similar searches along the lines of how long one can safely preserve a corpse in formaldehyde, English laws related to exhuming graves, international banking laws, makes and models of handguns, poisonous flower species, flight times between various countries on the terror watch list and so forth, I’d just like to publicly say that I am not a murderer, drug trafficker, money launderer, or terrorist.

I am a writer. Fight me.

(Don’t actually fight me. The only strong part of my body is my fingers, from all the typing.)

Ok, I’ll just apologise in advance: this IS snarky, lol. But don’t you find it rather hilarious that Mary, who’s supposed to be this internationally wanted assassin and sooOOOooo intelligent, hasn’t yet figured out to maybe not wear the same perfume all the time??? Or even just leave it off when she’s going to confront people at gunpoint? That’s either: a) her arrogance in wanting to leave a signature behind, or b) just really dumb. Lol.

I don’t know if this is important or not but I’m watching the special for the third time right now and I just noticed MP!VictorianJohn is right handed??

Maybe is the kind of thing about John that Sherlock haven’t really paid attention or maybe Martin just decided to played him right handed this time….idk….

whoa this is weird as fuck!

I checked this scene and others to see if John was just leafing through his notebook here. And

here he is, WRITING WITH RIGHT HAND, thank you very much.

His natural hand movements are still that of a left-handed man. He drinks with left hand, offers Lestrade a drink again with left, takes off the shroud covering the bride in the morgue with his left hand, doffs off his hat with left, gives Wilder a left-handed thumbs up. And then when Lady Carmichael comes in, he is writing again with his right hand! (Mind you, even in modern version, he has always handled a gun with his right hand, just as in Victorian version.)

I wonder if it’s to do with the period setting. I’m digging through the history of handed-ness, and much as before, left-handed-ness was rather a bad thing in 19th century. Though, the movement for ambidexterity started towards the end of that century. Maybe a Watson was forced as child to adopt right-handed-ness for writing, but it was never stamped out completely? Which allowed him to have spontaneous hand movements as per his natural tendency while allowing him the guise of a right handed, socially acceptable man? Being aware of that, maybe Sherlock constructed a period appropriate Watson?

Of course, there’s always a possibility of over-reading. But I checked! It’s only his writing that is mirror of his modern counterpart!

Yes, John is outwardly displaying a socially correct behaviour that may not demonstrate his true nature. That, or he’s just ambidextrous. Or to make that unmistakeably clear for those in the back, he’s ambidextrous. John Watson is bisexual.
