The Three Laws of Fandom
If you wish to take part in any fandom, you need to accept and respect these three laws.
If you aren’t able to do that, then you need to realise that your actions are making fandom unsafe for creators. That you are stifling creativity.
Like vaccination, fandom only works if everyone respects these rules. Creators need to be free to make their fanart, fanfics and all other content without fear of being harassed or concern-trolled for their creative choices, no matter whether you happen to like that content or not.
The First Law of Fandom
Don’t Like; Don’t Read (DL;DR)
It is up to you what you see online. It is not anyone else’s place to tell you what you should or should not consume in terms of content; it is not up to anyone else to police the internet so that you do not see things you do not like. At the same time, it is not up to YOU to police fandom to protect yourself or anyone else, real or hypothetical.
There are tools out there to help protect you if you have triggers or squicks. Learn to use them, and to take care of your own mental health. If you are consuming fan-made content and you find that you are disliking it - STOP.
The Second Law of Fandom
Your Kink Is Not My Kink (YKINMK)
Simply put, this means that everyone likes different things. It’s not up to you to determine what creators are allowed to create. It’s not up to you to police fandom.
If you don’t like something, you can post meta about it or create contrarian content yourself, seek to convert other fans to your way of thinking.
But you have no right to say to any creator “I do not like this, therefore you should not create it. Nobody should like this. It should not exist.”
It’s not up to you to decide what other people are allowed to like or not like, to create or not to create. That’s censorship. Don’t do it.
The Third Law of Fandom
Ship And Let Ship (SALS)
Much (though not all) fandom is about shipping. There are as many possible ships as there are fans, maybe more. You may have an OTP (One True Pairing), you may have a NOTP, that pairing that makes you want to barf at the very thought of its existence.
It’s not up to you to police ships or to determine what other people are allowed to ship. Just because you find that one particular ship problematic or disgusting, does not mean that other people are not allowed to explore its possibilities in their fanworks.
You are free to create contrarian content, to write meta about why a particular ship is repulsive, to discuss it endlessly on your private blog with like-minded persons.
It is not appropriate to harass creators about their ships, it is not appropriate to demand they do not create any more fanworks about those ships, or that they create fanwork only in a manner that you deem appropriate.
These three laws add up to the following:
You are not paying for fanworks content, and you have no rights to it other than to choose to consume it, or not consume it. If you do choose to consume it, do not then attack the creator if it wasn’t to your taste. That’s the height of bad manners.
Be courteous in fandom. It makes the whole experience better for all of us.
This post is perfect. Shout-out to the OP!!

Love your blog, You had me at the "not a pro Mary blog"
Hahahaha, thank you!!! I just felt it necessary to put that out there good and clear so that it wouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone! I used to get so, SO much hate for never having liked Mary, ever, at any point, so - just making sure people know what they’re getting here! :’D Good to have you aboard!!

I’m gonna be honest, guys, I’m not a huge fan of this new “Sherlock did a strange and/or fantastic thing, so he must have been on drugs at that time” trend I’m seeing happening. I’ve seen a couple posts in that vein from different people so I’m not calling anyone out in particular, I just want us to be aware and critical of this as a trend. Sherlock is a strange and fantastic person who struggles with addiction. His addiction does not make him strange and fantastic. Please do not conflate drug addiction with the ability or tendency to be strange and/or fantastic.
The only times we have confirmed drug usage for Sherlock is in the drug den in HLV and on the plane in TAB. While I’m certain arguments can be made for drug usage in s1 and s2, please, please don’t fall into the trap of “that was weird, must have been drugs” because not only does it downplay the devastating reality of being a relapsed, long-term addict, it does a huge disservice to the complicated character of Sherlock Holmes and reduces him to a two dimensional character who fails to experience growth and relies on drugs to be fantastic, amazing, extraordinary.
Just be careful with this one, y’all. I look forward to reading many more metas on the issue!
I agree with this and will just add that the TAB scene isn’t confirmed! There has been no drug test, no drugs found on him. In fact, Sherlock tears up his list and says “I don’t need this [list of drugs]; I’ve got the real thing now”. Though he also says that he just overdosed. It seems highly likely, but it has not yet been proven beyond question, is all I’m saying.
I just personally find it very difficult to believe that he got drugs while in solitary confinement. And if he was, then he could only have been planning to commit suicide, because he didn’t know about Moriarty or that he would “need” them “for a case” yet. All I’m saying is that there are a lot of unanswered questions here.
Mycroft and John: the Apprentice
Mycroft has been testing and training John to ultimately replace him as Sherlock’s carer from the day that John and Sherlock moved in together (aka the day after they met).
He tested John to make sure that he wouldn’t sell Sherlock out. Note that Mycroft (presumably) invites Mary to spy on them both and she accepts eagerly, gleefully. I think we can safely assume Mycroft’s stance on that.He gave him the signals of a danger night and what to watch out for (”did he accept the cigarette?” “Yes” “Shit!”), and with it, the understanding that Sherlock’s safety must come ahead of any other plans John might have at the moment.
He makes sure that Sherlock has John’s help in the work that keeps him going (texting him in TGG, sending a helicopter to fetch him from a field in Wales to help Sherlock deal with Irene Adler, etc).
S: “You phoned him!” J: “Of course I bloody phoned him.” M: “Of course he bloody did.” John and Mycroft both understand that John is to be stepping in here. Remember John’s fury in the lab: “If you were anywhere near this point, you could have called!” He knows he accepted a responsibility here and feels that he failed, and Mycroft knows it. Yet both he and Mycroft also know that John is the one who understands Sherlock better. When John warns Mycroft to go after “Brother mine, don’t appal me when I’m high”, Mycroft doesn’t say a word - he accepts John’s greater insight and just shuts up and goes.
Mycroft has been one of the most primary intercessors in Sherlock’s life. Evidently he was there for an overdose of large proportion at some earlier point. He was the one who planned the takedown of Moriarty with Sherlock in series 2 and planned Sherlock’s possible escape plans. He was the one who carried out said escape plans and later rescued Sherlock in Serbia. John’s stepped in as the new rescuer, back-up plan, partner-in-crime, the one that Mycroft could never have been. John isn’t afraid of legwork, of shooting the villain, of going after the hound. At the end of TAB, we see Mycroft officially hand over the reins. “Look after him,” he says, despite knowing about the wife that (maybe??) just hacked into the MI5 server on a phone, who shot the brother whose loss would break his heart, who gladly agreed to spy on them. Is this Mycroft’s way of telling John to make a choice here? Either way, Mycroft is done for, and John will need to be there for Sherlock even more than he has been, preferably living with him and keeping him safe and sane and stimulated. And that’s a commitment that isn’t particularly compatible with others, problematic wife aside.

Am I reading too...

Am I reading too much into this or do his eyes slide rather tellingly to Mary right after he says “why wouldn’t I be all right?” As in, she’s exactly why he wouldn’t be all right.
He’s definitely looking at John when he says, “Miss me?“ You can tell because his head is in the same position when he answers John’s question. And Mycroft is further to the right.
To me it does, indeed, look like he looks right at Mary after he says, “Why wouldn’t I be?”.
