That special feeling of being singled out and targeted by a Mary stan for their hate, as though you’re the only person in the world who considers it a problem to shoot your friend in the heart, ooh la la, my day has been made

So I need some help with finding a fic. I was going to ask Silent Auror but they don't have an anon option. I've been to ScienceOfJohnlock about this already but no one had any leads they could help me with. I was wondering if maybe you can help me, if you

Harry Watson comes to see Sherlock, she texts John a bunch of times to talk to Sherlock but John won’t listen. John ends up renting a cottage in Sussex, it has bee hives & he has an epiphany about Sherlock. He comes back to London to convince Sherlock to give them a chance. Sherlock is trying to reorganize the bookshelf, happens to be looking at John’s copy of Grey’s Anatomy when John visits. He talks to Sherlock & Sherlock is insecure but they agree to be together. A few days/ weeks later (2)

there’s a crime scene & Lestrade pointedly asks Anderson to show Sherlock in because “John Watson & I are going to have a long conversation.” John tells Sherlock he’s glad so many people care for him. *I’m putting in as many details as I can remember so someone can PLEASE help me out. PLEASE. I’m looking for this fic for my sister. She’s really unwell and I just want to try and cheer her up. I’d appreciate any help at all.*

Well, Anon, I asked @silentauroriamthereal, and they’re happy to help. :)

“How badly do you wanna find out?” *cocks gun that she brought with her because she was gonna literally shoot him again* “you can’t shoot me ur face is on the building” *sighs but decides to show off anyway to scare my intended target* “I will do anything to make sure my husband doesn’t find out that I kill people and TBH I want to kill you”

Lies to kill right now:

1. Mary wasn’t scared. Look at her face. She’s smiling. She was completely in control of this situation from start to finish, despite Sherlock’s unplanned interruption. She didn’t care. She warned him and then she shot him. Cold blood. She wasn’t frightened. She was annoyed.

2. It wasn’t an accident.

3. She was never sorry. If anything, she regretted the fact that Sherlock somehow failed to bleed out on his way to the hospital and when he escaped from said hospital after she threatened him again, while drugged and unable to defend himself or even respond, she hunted him down with a loaded gun in preparation to shoot him again. Repetition automatically cancels out any and all remorse theories.

4. Mary enjoys this sort of thing. She has demonstrated canonically that she enjoys making Sherlock uncomfortable, and this smile right here says everything you need to know about how she felt about shooting him. Even the actor herself said that it was one of her two favourite things to play. This is heartfelt, bone-deep enjoyment right here. Mary never liked Sherlock from the beginning, and here she finally has a reason to shoot him.

5. About that… it was a very flimsy reason. It would have made far more sense to knock Sherlock out with the butt of her gun, continue to threaten Magnussen for his proofs of her extremely criminal past, then wait for Sherlock to revive and urgently ask him to keep quiet, ask him for advice on how to best break the news of her actual identity to the man she married, or - should he refuse any of the above - THEN threaten him. Not shoot without even discussing it. No: Mary clearly wanted to shoot Sherlock.

And so she did. Smiling.

*happy writer dance*

I’m so excited! The novel is now over 90,000 words and it’s going like gangbusters!! AND, I’m finally now at the point where the next scene I write is going to be the ones where my two main idiots finally get it together romantically! After 90,000 words, two “on screen” (on page?) bombs, one stowaway in the hold of a cargo ship, two bullets, one wedding, a very important DNA test, and a kiss that was extremely rejected. FINALLY!!!

John chose Sherlock, not Mary

There has been a ton of meta concerning the domestic in HLV, so I am very sorry if this meta already exists. In case you have written or know any meta that is basically the same as what follows, please leave me a PM and I’ll reblog it as well!

It’s not a secret that in His Last Vow some things were established in the very first minutes: John’s “addiction”, not being suited for domestic life, missing Sherlock and Sherlock’s drug usage fluctuating after not talking to John for one month. Consequently, we can assume that John is not very happy with his marriage. And after finding out that Mary has been lying to him from the very beginning, we get the ‘little domestic’ and the cinematography in this scene is brilliant - it tells us exactly who John truly forgives and sides with, whether consciously or subconsciously.

I was talking to my best friend about how this scene was shot and how Mary behaves throughout this scene (result of our discussion: cold, distant, very weird for someone who was lying to her husband the entire time and is not reacting to it in any sympathetic way, no apology).

Many have pointed out the same: there’s no reason for Sherlock to stand at the door. He can barely stand. He’s in pain. He should sit - but he’s purposefully placed there to make John the axis between Sherlock and Mary. This is enforced through over the shoulder shots exclusively to John - whenever he turns to Mary or Sherlock, it’s his little blur of him we are seeing. If we see John, it might be from Sherlock’s perspective but there’s nothing that’d server as a ‘shoulder’. This framing, the way our characters are placed, it’s basically implying this question: John - who do you side with? Mary or Sherlock? Of course, he sides with Sherlock: “Your way. Always your way.”

It’s not just what John says though. It’s also how this entire scene is constructed. What really caught my best friend’s attention was this:

At first, I was only looking at Mary’s face and I think that’s where a lot of people will look at first but my best friend pointed to the mirror. She said: “Look, John is turning away from her. Literally turning away from her.”

You could argue that the mirror has always been there - it’s hard to avoid it. So the mirroring could be a very subtle thing, coincidence maybe (we know what we say about that) BUT in the next moment, the camera literally only frames the mirror.

This is not a close-up. This is the entire screencap. The camera only has the mirror in focus - leaving Mary in a blur, barely visible and only then the camera slowly pivots to Mary, focus is on her now. You can still see MirrorJohn turning his back on her.  And since my best friend and I are not native English speakers, we realized very late that the phrase “turning one’s back on someone” literally means leaving someone.  It’s also funny how you don’t see John really facing Mary anymore while he is the axis between Sherlock and Mary - once John actually talks to her, after agreeing with Sherlock, we do see the mirror and Mary but John isn’t even in the frame anymore.

We can interpret this scene in many ways - a decision in this moment, to go along with what Sherlock says, to turn his back on Mary (conscious or subconsciously). But we can also interpret this to foreshadow what might really have happened throughout these months until Christmas, which are still a mystery to us, who he truly forgives and who he truly chooses in the future - and it is definitely not Mary. John chose Sherlock.

Don’t forget the line “WE decide if WE want you or not”. John sides with Sherlock subconsciously, like always. He will choose him in the end, too, once Mary’s character arc is complete. It’s always the two of them against the rest of the world. Excellent meta! :)

Nice meta. Great literal ‘mirroring’.

also, the wallpaper behind Mary makes a big red X above her head

excellent meta; I especially enjoyed the last comment in this thread.

Ditto. X’d out!

I loved this moment. Adored it fiercely. Except then he went back to her. I sure as hell hope it’s part of a plan, but time will tell…
