Asemia Wonders

"A Copy of Roman Letters Appearing on the Trajan Columns, Rome, 114 A. D." (1940)I don't really know why I like letters, by which I mean characters by which language is written down, because we really don't know why we like anything. To say I like letters would force me to say because I like the mystical way in which humans created written language so that meaningless signs could be meaningful. But to say that is to raise the question why I like the magic of encoded meaning., and the question...

Huth is Huth

A captcha captured by John Lowther and posted to my Facebook Wall on 11 May 2010
is Huth?
is this this Huth?
is it me who
is this Huth who
is this Huth who
is the Huth?

who is that Huth
who is the Huth?

is there some Huth
in it? some semblance
of Huth? do you know it
beyond a shadow of
a Huth?

as a small boy
did he move to Huth
or Consequences,
New Mexico? Has
the television show
been forgotten?

Was I the show?
Was I the cathode ray?

what secret Huth
could I hide of what
Huth I was when last
I was a Huth?

Just now

back from retrieving our son Tim from college, after he wasn't quite ready as soon as he had planned to, and after we'd searched the dark wilds of Westchester County (hey, we saw a raccoon even) for a gas station at 10 o'clock at night. We thought almost not at all about poetry, except on the ride down, during which Nancy and I talked about projects we have been working on, thinking them out, and except when I was reading emails about a book cover I'm designing slowly, layer by layer, like a ...

Third-Floor Memories

Geof Huth's Papers in the Process of Becoming Organized, Schenectady, NY (8 May 2010)When Nancy and I bought this house of ours, one of the major reasons was the third floor, which allowed plenty of space and light for an office-cum-studio for me to work. I used to spend much of my time up there until Nancy started to forget who I was. I still use the office occasionally, but most of the time I write at the dining room table. The office remains a storage space for books, paper, art supplies, ...

What Lies Quiet in Wait for Eyes

Kate Greenstreet, but even now I am perhaps not speaking (2010)
(with an original color collage by Ashley Lamb)There are words for ideas I've never had, and those are the words I search for, and those are the words I need to write anything about the poetry of Kate Greenstreet, for it is that I don't know what I like about Kate's writing, I don't know how it draws me in, I don't understand its secrets (or know for sure if it even has any—it may be a simple obvious thing I simply don't...
