Thank you moms!

Our mom's were a little wary about appearing on the show…and really, isn't that one of the most important jobs of a mom? Being wary?

But we think they're pretty amazing and like to show them off. And, anyway, our siblings turned out much more sane than us, so you can't blame any of our character flaws on our moms. They were very good sports about sharing their holiday with the cameras and crew. (Josh's dad, too.)

And like the true moms that they were, they made sure that after filming was done ...

Egg Salad

One of the thrills of owning a farm (or even a sizable backyard) is the joy of walking out and plucking fresh chicken eggs right from the roost.  At Beekman 1802, the eggshells come in the palest shade of blue to a rich chocolate brown,  and the yolks are as bright as a flower.  We wanted to develop a simple recipe that would have you screaming "summer!" before the fork ever hits your mouth

Ingredients:

8 eggs

½ cup of sliced black olives

2 tablespoon of capers

3 cloves garlic – peeled and minced

T...

Poems for PolkaSpot

A Facebook Buddy has been so inspired by Polkie's onscreen antics that she has perfectly captured her spirit in rhyme!  It reminds us of the poems of Christina Rossetti.  PolkaSpot approves!!

The sun peeks it's head
Over Clover Hill
And the goats are slowly waking.
The morning has come
To Beekman Farm
And the day is ready for taking.
Farmer John's up
As the goats wander by
He's given them all some fresh hay
They gather around-still sleep in their eyes
They're ready to start a new day!
There's Polka...

Episode 6 Recap

James is scared

The previews have been running all week. Previews that show the ghosts of Beekman. And it's episode six. And three sixes strung together is the sign of the beast. I have been wondering if there is a connection. If the beast is lurking at Beekman, maybe living inside a goat and waiting to reveal himself. Or of Pokey the Llama is the beast. Or maybe one of those dudes that run the American Hotel in Sharon Springs. If one of them were, it would be incredible reality TV history...

Mary Finds a "Car"

Mary Beekman is a four-year-old ghost who resides in The Beekman Mansion, and considers Brent and Josh her "imaginary friends." Follow Mary Beekman's Diary each week to learn what it's like to be a young child in early 19th century America.

This morning was very pretty.  The sky was a soft blue and  sometimes there were puffy, white clouds that left moving shadows on the lawn.  I can see them from the upstairs window. I had to do my lessons and then Mother said I could go outside to help...

Purple Passion

This from a reader of this blog:

"Hopefully you can assist, we have a wedding coming up and need a purple drink, any suggestions?"

Well, yes and no and, finally, yes. I take it that the reader means something very purple and not just a purple tinged red (like a young red wine) that will look exotic and fun in the glass. I can offer some suggestions, but I do so reluctantly.

There is nothing that will provide that color without some help. Blueberry juice comes the closest and you could use a...

All-Souls: The Ghost Whisperer

Interior, Beekman Family Crypt

Interior, Beekman Family Crypt

The Beekman Mansion has stood for over two centuries, weathered attacks by Native Americans, was a stop on the underground railroad, and was abandoned twice in its lifetime. How could there not be some restless souls wandering around its rooms?

We've met many locals, including one who spent time living in The Beekman as a child, who state unequivocally that they would never spend a single night in the mansion. Local tales claim of lights that appear to...
