Inspired!

We always find creative inspiration around the farm and are thrilled when others do.

Artist Mary Connell Gaynor takes her inspiration from life. She is known for her sensitive pastel portraits of children which she has been creating for 30 years. Mary approaches her studies of animals with that same gentle passion.

"I love the challenge of bringing that special something that is behind the eyes of every living thing to life in my art.  There is always something that takes hold of me and won't...

The Boys of Summer

There is something about late summer that I really love. The nights begin to cool down. The locusts call to one another in the overgrown grasses. Airplanes fly overhead and the sound is somehow deeper and more distant. By now gardens are in the throws of giving us sweet corn, green beans, carrots, new potatoes with tissue thin skins, sweet watermelon, and juice laden orange cantaloupe. The very things I ate most as a child. But nothing more so, than sun-warmed tomatoes.

As I've cooked over...

Pick a Peck of Peppers

...and put them in a vase

Any time we're called upon to make a table centerpiece, we always make a dash out to the garden—both the flower and the vegetable gardens–to see what's there to inspire us.

An abundance of peppers in the vegetable garden led to these fiery creations.

Globe-shaped vases work best

As you are putting your peppers into the vase, press them as tightly against one another and the edge of the bowl as possible.  When you are about half-way around the bowl, cut a cube of floral f...

Mary and Blackcaps

Mary Beekman is a four-year-old ghost who resides in The Beekman Mansion, and considers Brent and Josh her "imaginary friends." Follow Mary Beekman's Diary each week to learn what it's like to be a young child in early 19th century America

Step, step, march, march, in and out, up and down.  I am trying very heard to sew in the tiniest of stitches………all across one side of the handkerchief.  Mother says my stitches are still too large.  So I am pretending my needle is taking fairy steps across t...

Finale Recap

Dare to dream. When I was a little kid, I used to hear it all the time. Dare to dream. You can be a lawyer or a doctor or even the President of the United States. I dared to dream. And I became me. Hahahahahaha.

Sometimes though, if you dare to dream, things can work out beautifully. I dared to dream of double digit episodes of the Fabulaous Beekman Boys. And motherfuckers, it came true. We're on episode 10. Woohoo, woohoo. Episode 10!!! As usual, the goat scale will be used.

Tension in the...

Zucchini Ribbons

My ritual upon traveling to the Beekman during these summer months is to immediately email Josh when my plane touches down and inquire as to what's ready for harvesting in the garden. Josh quickly writes back with a list of all the goodies that await at the farm, and as I make the drive to Sharon Springs, I dream up all sorts of meals for us to enjoy in the coming week.

On my last visit, I wandered through the maze of raised beds, grazing on different curly leaves and green pods along the...

The Supporting Cast

Garth and Doug

Recently Patricia Carlson, a long-time summer visitor to Sharon Springs and the Glimmerglass Opera, stopped into the Mercantile with a lovely verse.  It pretty much captures the entire season (and gives Doug and Garth their well-deserved props)

The Supporting Cost

Garth and Doug have long been known

For rescuing the past.

But now they and their able staff

Are the support cast

They've saved the grand American

And the old Masonic Hall,

But now they're TV notables

Well known to one and...

What's In Store

The Beekman 1802 Mercantile

When we started Beekman 1802, we never imagined opening a bricks and mortar store.  The  bricks and mortar of the farm were  all we would need to run our internet-based business.   But as fortune would have it, our little farm-based business continued to grow.  We added more artists from the community as we developed new products, and before we knew it, the basement, the attic, and even the dining room were being used as storage, packing and wrapping spaces.

We...
