Mary Makes Hay

Mary Beekman is a four-year-old ghost who resides in The Beekman Mansion, and considers Brent and Josh her "imaginary friends." Follow Mary Beekman's Diary each week to learn what it's like to be a young child in early 19th century America.

The sun is hot in this early morning.  We have all been moving a bit slowly.  Father says this is good weather for cutting the fields.  Mother and the women who help her, have been heating the big kettles for the wash out of doors.  Their faces are still...

Episode 8 Recap

Babies babies babies. Looks like this episode is all about babies. I love babies. Doesn't everybody love babies? How can you not love a baby. Even a goat baby. Looks like this is going to be fun. As usual, I will rank the events depicted on the show using a scale of goats. Five goats is good. One goat is bad. At the end, the number of goats will indicate whether I am more or less likely to follow the Beekman Boys lead and leave New York City.

It's winter at the farm. I hate winter everywhere b...

The Shot Seen 'round the World

Pyongson Yim makes Beekman beautiful.

Angela Rae Berg and I first arrived at the Beekman farm in Sharon Springs, NY in June 2009. She as the fearless Director of the now titled show, "The Fabulous Beekman Boys" and me as her Director of Photography. Our mission was to capture footage for a Planet Green television pilot. I had no clue what "Beekman 1802" was all about then. I was there to do a job. Little did I realize that meeting Brent and Josh would infuse my life and that Angela and I...

Raise Your Glasses, 7

Each week, we'll post a new Beekman 1802 elixir recipe for you to use and give you a new reason to "raise your glass"—–to your mouth that is.

This week the beverage of choice is good for what ails you.   Click here for the "how, too"  The remedy works better if  you are wearing a smoking jacket and slippers.  These t...

Americano and Negroni

Now that we've talked about Campari and vermouth, let's talk about the wonderful things that happen when they get put together…but first a bit more about Campari, since it is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. In the interest of full disclosure, I should mention that the agency I work for is one of several that represent Campari in the United States. However, I have been a fan for much longer than I have had my present job and I do not do any work on that account. So…

Campari and...

Vermouth

So we were talking about Campari, which is an example of a whole family of drinks called "bitters" and which are a specialty of Italy. They have ancient history and where probably originally made for medicinal purposes by steeping herbs in wine.  There are many who swear by bitters (amari in Italian) as digestive aids and I do believe Campari stimulates the appetite.  The bitter component came traditionally from herbs like rue and wormwood.  And the word "wormwood" is the root of the word...

Walk This Way

Recently I sent Josh over to pull some of the wheels of Blaak out of the caves.  After he left the creamery, Bob Sweitzer, one of the cheesemakers who help perfect each batch of Blaak, sent me this tell-tale picture of the tracks that Josh left behind in the ash.

It is true.  Josh does the model walk EVERYWHERE.  If you study the steps above, you too can strut your stuff.

See how it's done by clicking here

Episode 7 Recap

A mama's boy

Thanksgiving. Oh my. It's either a great joy, or a profound nightmare, depending your familial situation and your propensity to binge. I could see it going either way at Beekman, and given that we know the farm is haunted, there could be some beast/ghost/holiday drama. And I should let you, my reader, know that  I once spent Thanksgiving at Beekman farm, so I have some insight to what it's like there on a holiday. As always, I use the goat scale to indicate whether what I see...
