Respect Your Elder

Folklore holds that sitting under an elder on Midsummer allows one to see the Fairy Queen on her progression through the wild places.  While living in England, I learned that one never cuts any portion of the elder without asking permission of the plant first.   Often you will read that growing elder on your property protects you from witchcraft.  Then again, I've read that it protects the witch.

That's some powerful stuff.

Elder (Sambucus Canadensis) is flowering beautifully now throughout...

A "Real" Mess

Before

"So, do you live in the mansion with them?"

This is the question I get more than any other once someone finds out I film at the Beekman Mansion.

We're a small crew that films the show -  only about 6 of us.  And while, no, we do not live at the Beekman, it certainly has come to feel like a second home. Brent and Josh have been incredibly welcoming ever since the first day of filming. So much so, they've even allowed us a little bit of space to call our own.

A year ago, if you walked into ...

Episode 4 Lego Recap

A lady? A tramp?

Had it not been for Lego, Lincoln Logs and Tinker Toys, there may have never been a Beekman 1802.  These toys inspired an attention to detail and construction that is evident in how we approach life and design on the farm.

Gabby, a 10 year old artist and FOB (Friend of Beekman), is doing Lego recreations of her favorite scenes from each episode of The Fabulous Beekman Boys.

Look through the Beyond Fabulous blog for more of Gabby's creations and other cool stuff about The...

Strawberry Honey Goat Milk Ice Cream

A little lighter than regular ice cream, but just as tasty and easy to make.

We came up with this recipe for a Fourth of cookout at our friend Michelle's house. (An incredible historic stone mansion with a famous "100 mile view" overlooking the Mohawk Valley. She presciently purchased it for next to nothing in the 1990's. Which is why she's one of the best realtors in the area.)

In late June/early July we're usually drowning in strawberries, and are always looking for new ways to use them...

Suds and Studs

Was James smiling after this week's episode?

Beekman 3

In some cultures three is considered a holy number. In others it is a lucky number number. In still more it an evil number. Whatever your particular beliefs, it's clear that all of us everywhere every single person in the whole wide world has fascination with the number three. And guess what, it's week number three of the Fabulous Beekman Boys. Woohoo, woohoo!!!

As I recap the episode, I will, as always, use the same scale of goats to...

Raise Your Glasses, trois

Warning: take small sips this week

To enhance your viewing pleasure and to make each and every episode of The Fabulous Beekman Boys as fabulous as possible, we're going to encourage the playing of a nice parlor game.

Each week, we'll post a new Beekman 1802 elixir recipe for you to use and give you a new reason to "raise your glass"—–to your mouth that is.

This week the beverage of choice is Campari (click here for the how-to).

Raise your glass every time you hear the word "soap".

Campari

Chinotto

If I had to trace my interest in food and wine to one event, it would probably be a trip to Europe that I took with my father forty years ago this summer. We crossed over to France by ocean liner (returning on the cheapest airline then operating), went to visit my grandmother in Switzerland and then to visit friends of the family in Italy. The food was magnificent the whole way and my father was pretty liberal about letting an eleven year old taste any wine he was drinking, although s...

Elderflower Fritters

The tiny elderberry blossoms grow in flat lacy clumps, or "corymbs."

Most people drive by roadside clumps of wild American Black Elderberry bushes every day without realizing what they're missing. Sambucus Canadensis grows wild in the hedgerows and gullies of Eastern America, and is an absolutely amazing plant. In the early summer, it's blossoms can be harvested for making deliciously delicate simple syrups and cordials. In late summer, the lacy bunches of tiny blue-black berries can be used i...

Rumtopf – A Spring to Yuletime Tradition.

This week's guest blog fills us in on the wonderful seasonal tradition of "Rumtopf." Literally meaning "Rum Pot" this delicious mixture collects seasonal fruit all summer long, and preserves them in rum and sugar until the holidays. It is, perhaps, the definitive seasonal dessert. Submitted by guest blogger, Roger Swayze:

I think a lot about the holidays at various times throughout the year.  Some of the many traditions I enjoy actually begin early in the year.  My grandmother always made...
