Conscious Cat Sunday: Pause and Reflect Between the Years
I’ve always used the time between Christmas and New Year’s to reflect back on the year that is about to pass, and to set some intentions for the year to come. The Norwegians actually have a name for this week: “romjula.” “Rom” means ”room” or ”space.” Romjula is the ”space” between jul (Christmas) and nyttår (New Year). To me, there’s something magical about this space between the years.
This week between the years is a great time to consciously give thanks for all the blessings the year has...

Mews and Nips: Tortoiseshell Cat Gets Loose on Delta Flight
A tortoiseshell cat decided to take an unauthorized walk while mid-air on a Delta flight, and the resulting video quickly went viral with headlines such as “hilarious mid-flight video,” “cat stalking Delta plane and terrifying flight attendant,” and more along those lines. The video shows the tortie walking into the galley area of the plane while a flight attendant tries to get her to sit like a dog. Eventually, the cat’s owner responds to the flight attendant’s page and shows up with a back...

Tortitude: The BIG Book of Cat With a BIG Attitude Pre-Order Update
Thank you to all of you who have already pre-ordered Tortitude: The BIG Book About Cats With a BIG Attitude! I’m very excited that the book has been showing fairly consistently at #1 in “New Releases – Cat Breeds,” and even though torties are not a breed (read the book for more on this!), I’m not going to argue with Amazon about being #1!
Unfortunately, it appears that Amazon has gotten a little ahead of themselves, and some of you have received notices that the book will ship later this wee...

Christmas Eve Reflections
Christmas Eve has always been a day of reflection for me. I consider myself a deeply spiritual person, but I don’t feel affiliated with any particular brand of religion. I grew up Catholic, but I’ve chosen to take what I call a “cafeteria approach” to spirituality, picking and choosing what resonates, and discarding the rest. I celebrate Christmas, because for me, the holiday is ultimately about love, generosity, and giving. But even more than that, for me, it’s a time to slow down.
We live...

10 Best Cat Products of 2015
I see a lot of new products each year. Between what I saw at Global Pet Expo in March, and the dozens of products that were sent to me over the course of the year, it’s probably safe to say that I’ve seen thousands of pet products in 2015. Allegra and Ruby have been busy helping me review many of them for you throughout the year. With so many products, it’s really hard to choose only 10 favorites, but with the help of my two product testers, we’ve come up with this list (presented in the ord...

Help Feral and Stray Cats in Cold Weather
Even though feral and stray cats, often also called community cats, are used to fending for themselves during the winter months, they can use some help, especially during severe winter weather. Feral cats are descendants of a domesticated cat that have returned to the wild. Feral cats are born in the wild, as opposed to stray cats, who are usually cats who have been lost or abandoned.
Give outdoor cats shelter from the coldEven though outdoor cats adapt by growing a thicker coat over the wi...

Conscious Cat Sunday: Why Coloring Books Are Good For Your Mental Health
Adult coloring books are winding up on bestseller lists around the world, and it turns out that coloring is more than just a fun way to pass the time. Studies show that the structured, rhythmic motion of coloring eases you into a meditative state, which allows you to push negative thoughts and worries out of your mind, and which induces a profound sense of relaxation. Coloring is also a great way to explore your creativity. Spending 15 minutes coloring an image can give you a sense of having...

Mews and Nips: Siberian City Wants Cat For Mayor
Residents in the Siberian city of Barnul are so fed up with their politicians that they put a cat up against other candidates running for the office of mayor. A recent poll showed that Barsik, an 18-year-old Scottish Fold, received nearly 91% of more than 5,400 votes cast by Tuesday. One of the poll’s administrators has even launched a crowd-funding initiative to raise a billboard in the city center showing the feline candidate with the slogan “Only mice don’t vote for Barsik!” Read the full...
