UC Davis Study Finds That Torties and Calicos are “More Challenging”

tortoiseshell-cat

Veterinarians from UC Davis have discovered, in recently published research, that cats with calico and tortoiseshell coat patterns tend to challenge their human companions more often than cats of other colors. This certainly comes as no surprise to anyone who has ever been owned by a tortie or calico, but I found it interesting that we are starting to see studies that seem to confirm that tortitude is real.

The Sacramento Bee reports that the research backs up long-standing observations amon...

Special Discount for Conscious Cat Readers: Get 15% OFF Any Cat Tree from Pet Tree Houses

Pet-Tree-Houses

Cat trees are a must have for indoor cats. They satsify cats’ need to climb, they provide a great view of the outdoors if placed near a window, and they offer an outlet for cats’ natural instinct to scratch. Cat trees are especially important in multicat households, giving cats opportunities to share territory on more than one level, without bumping into each other and creating possible altercations.

There are almost unlimited options for cat trees, ranging from basic carpeted models to wood...

6 Healthy Habits to Make 2016 a Happy Year for Your Cats

cat-with-woman

Even though most New Year’s resolutions are abandoned within a month of making them, the New Year is a good time to start fresh and create some healthy habits. The following 6 habit will keep your cats happy and healthy not just for a few weeks, but for the rest of their lives.

1. Feed a species appropriate diet

Nutrition is the foundation for good health. Cats are obligate carnivores and they need meat to thrive. If you’re not already feeding a raw or grain-free canned diet, consider making...

Conscious Cat Sunday: Do Cats Make New Year’s Resolutions?

new-years-resolutions

Do you make New Year’s resolutions? I stopped making them several years ago. Since I still like the idea of the “fresh start” a new year offers, I set New Year’s intentions instead. I think New Year’s resolutions are destined to fail, because there’s an inherent flaw in the term “resolution.” The difference is subtle, but one (intention) implies that we are actually determined to do something differently, whereas the other (resolution) simply states that we’ve decided to change something.

Mews and Nips: Edgar’s Mission Rescues Tortie Trapped Between Two Sheds

Tinsel-Edgars-Mission

Australian farm sanctuary Edgar’s Mission, a Lancefield, Victoria non profit dedicated to creating a humane world for humans and non-humans, mounted one of the most amazing rescues I’ve seen in a while. On December 23, they received a call that a tiny kitten had become wedged between two metal sheds. Rescuers could hear the tiny kittens cries, but the situation seemed helpless. Phonecall after phonecall brought them no closer to getting the kitten out. It was a miracle that Tinsel, as the ki...

My Top 10 Books of 2015

cat-and-books

I don’t keep track of the number of books I read each year, but my best guess is somewhere between 150 and 200, and at least half of them have something to do with cats. I reviewed more than 40 books here on The Conscious Cat this year.

I made a commitment to myself long ago that I would never post a bad book review. I feel that every author pours his or her heart and soul into a book, and just because I don’t like a book doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not a good book. As a result, if you see...
