Book Review: An Exaltation of Larks

An Exaltation of Larksby Suanne Laqueur (Goodreads Author) 4.79  ·   Rating Details ·  173 Ratings  ·  108 ReviewsSeptember 11, 1973: Eleven-year-old Alejandro Penda watches from his apartment window as Santiago, Chile falls to a military coup, destroying his family and his childhood. Arriving alone in America, he’s taken in by the Larks: a prominent family in the town of Guelisten. Though burdened by unresolved grief for his disappeared parents, he becomes fiercely loyal to the Larks, eventually marrying one of their daughters, Valerie.

September 11, 2001: Javier Landes watches from his apartment window as New York City falls to terrorism. As one of Manhattan’s top-paid male escorts, this professional lover has never lacked for company and is loyal only to himself. But in the wake of 9/11, Jav is named guardian for an orphaned nephew in Guelisten and must open his carefully-guarded heart to pain he's long suppressed.

Alex, Valerie and Jav meet first in their twenties, with a sudden attraction each finds strange and compelling. When they meet again in their forties, they discover not only is their bond still strong, but their life experiences are strangely similar. All have been shaped by separate 9/11's, and their unfinished business from the past will change everything they know about love, loyalty and friendship.

"Life has rules. You cannot come in the middle of the night and take what we agreed isn't yours."

Across three decades and two continents, Suanne Laqueur's fifth novel explores the unpredictability of sexual attraction, how family ties are forged, torn and mended, and how love's downfall can turn to exaltation.
TeriLyn's thoughts: **An Exaltation of Larks generously provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.**

5+ ”I love stories.” Stars

Within the pages of this book, An Exaltation of Larks, a strikingly beautiful and emotional story fuses then embeds itself into the hearts of its readers. An inviting, rich tale you won't want to end. This story, unlike any other, weaves the complexities of three separate lives into the fabric of each other’s souls with threads of rich passion, tragedies, deep longing, and tightly woven cords of loyalty and understanding.

An Exaltation of Larks examines the endless boundaries of love and friendship. Composed poetically with intelligence and an obvious passion for human beings, their plights and their achievements, Suanne Laqueur allows readers to feel emotions deeply through her literary fiction. She leaves much room for questioning and analyzing our own unique emotions in the grand scheme of her protagonists jilted and fated lives. Laqueur’s precise story telling fuels itself with so much compassion emotions turn and change with each new page.

We walk the line of hardened grown man/scarred young man living in the grey comfort of solitude with Jav. We’re in a tight web of family and belonging with the Larks. We suffer the injustices cast upon our world by those inhumane enough to change lives for their own selfish causes. We empathize with Alex and Val, Trelawney and Roger. We feel vulnerable as they do, brave as they do. We yearn for relationships, whatever form they may be, to run this deep. We bask in the glow of the wonderful things left amongst the rubble.

Recently, I watched an excellent film on Netflix called The Fundamentals of Caring. The very title of this film conveys a message prominent throughout the film that kept me thinking long past “the end” of Larks. While that film and this book are quite different they have parallel themes. Meaning, at it’s very core, the very foundation of the entire wonderful story An Exaltation of Larks surrounds itself with the fundamentals of caring – just like the film. And poignantly and perfectly illustrates how showing a little care and a little compassion can change one’s whole life – one’s as in the carer and the caree.

An Exaltation of Larks proves that caring can change a catastrophic event into something else entirely shaping our perceptions, our sense of selves, and our outlook. While the event and the ghosts from it never leave us they don’t strangle us either. Caring molds the simplest of events into great ones; it forms the brightest thoughts from the darkest clouds. It’s made Jav, Alex, and Val, Roger, Tre, Deanne, and Ari who they are individually thanks to the collective of care they’ve found in their lives. With caring comes compassion, understanding, and acceptance. With caring comes a freedom in our lives afforded through forgiveness forged by love. It’s a simple act. Human decency at its finest to care about someone else’s struggles, passions, and well-being. This book challenges readers to inspect the decency within ourselves and project it outward.

The beautifully flawed characters and their extremely addictive story shaped by wit and compassion and built with the blocks brilliant of craftsmanship abundant in Suanne Laqueur’s writing make An Exaltation of Larksunforgettable. Her complex yet simple creatures for characters storm their way into your heart so fast. The force you to connect with them almost immediately and connect you will do. I can't imagine it's possible not to feel these people and want to know them, all of them. It’s a story you’ll feel in your soul. It imprints itself into your mind and your heart from the very first page. It’s a new top favorite of mine and will remain within my reading soul forever.

These characters, each and every one for whom I met within these pages, touched me somehow, some way with a series of glorious feels I don’t want to ever let go. I’m confident this book will do the same for you. As sure as Suanne Laqueur can create something as powerfully thoughtful, incredibly intelligent, and simply charming as An Exaltation of Larks. And as sure as Javier proclaims – “I like stories” - and never lets go of his distinct passion for stories within the pages of this book there is no question that I, too, love stories and feel immeasurably grateful for the fine-tuned gift of emotional story-telling Laqueur shared with the world in this book. An absolute MUST READ.

Book Review: The Monday Girl

The Monday Girlby Julie Johnson (Goodreads Author) 4.57  ·   Rating Details ·  14 Ratings  ·  13 ReviewsTHE GIRL DUET: PART ONE

Katharine Firestone is a bit of a mess.

Between an acting career that’s never quite made lift-off to stardom, a pathetic love life of online-dating-app losers, and a maxed-out balance on every one of her credit cards, things can’t get much worse. So, when she’s plucked from relative obscurity to land a lead role in Hollywood’s next big blockbuster, Kat is sure she’s finally on the right track.

Until she meets her co-star, Grayson Dunn… and all her plans are completely derailed.

Grayson is everything you’d expect the hottest actor alive to be — charming, disarming, and cocky as hell. As their characters slowly spiral into love on screen, Kat struggles to keep herself from falling for real. She knows handing Grayson her heart and expecting him not to break it would be the biggest mistake of her life. Yet the deeper she’s immersed in his glamorous world, the more blurred the boundaries between scripted affection and sincere passion become… and the harder it is to deny that their on-camera chemistry has crescendoed into a behind-the-scenes love affair…

What happens when you fall for someone who’s guaranteed to shatter you into pieces? Do you walk away? Or do you let him break you because, even broken, there’s simply no way you can’t stay?

THE MONDAY GIRL is a messy contemporary romance about a mixed up girl who falls for the wrong boy. It is the first part of a duet. The second installment, THE SOMEDAY GIRL, will be released a few weeks later, in early 2017. Each installment is approximately 85,000 words. Recommended for readers ages 17+ due to strong language, sexual situations, drug use, and other mature elements.
TeriLyn's thoughts:

**The Monday Girl generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.**

"Thing about shadows is..."Stars

With The Monday Girl Julie Johnson kicked it back old school, for me. This book reflects on her roots as a writer when she debuted with the phenomenal, gritty YA story Like Gravity . This new book ups the ante with a contemporary offering where she takes a raw and vulnerable time in her adult protagonists life and exploits not only this characters deepest insecurities but valid fears of all women in their early twenties by thrusting her into the spotlight with a man she's not equipped to fall for. While the tone of The Monday Girl remains infused with the great wit and humor we see in Johnson's most recent RomCom stories, the plot and exploration of characters ranges deeper, a little darker, and uncharacteristic in terms of structure and story arc reminiscent of her earlier work. And yet still her chops as a writer highlight that she can add new twists and layers to her stories to keep them fresh and exciting.

Kat Firestone, above said protagonist, takes readers on a wild, questioning, and ultimately lonely whirlwind of an adventure that falls into her lap just by being her whip-smart, caustically charming self. As the new lead actress in a film, something else she's not equipped for, Kat moves the story seamlessly at the aid of Johnson's always engrossing prose. The funny thing about Kat though? The things she feels not prepared for are the things she wholly excels at doing. She's damaged yet strong. Broken thoughts coupled with unhealthy demons lurking in her shadows yet shows readers something so inherently confident and beautiful inside her you just want her to recognize and stand up shouting "I am me and I deserve everything".

Kat meets Wyatt Hastings, the facilitator of her big break into a stardom her overbearing, vile Mother always wanted, in the most unlikely of scenarios. Wyatt - friend, mentor, and extremely good flirt - landed on my favorite character list with his charm, confidence in Kat, swoon-worthy sentiments, and his smile so palpable through Johnson's words. The friendly chemistry between he and Kat melts the delicious prose of their scenes. He's the open book, the sunny day, the boy who slays dragons without a second thought for the woman he'll one day deem worthy. Wyatt will lift you up and the air won't ever taste as sweet.

Enter Grayson Dunn. Oh Grayson, you messy, messy man. Staunch anti-love believer yet romantic to his core. He shakes up the pages of this book in so many beautiful and tragic ways. There's something so innately magnetic about Grayson's presence. An air of mystery shrouds him leaving one to think he's not the master of his own puppet strings. He's the closed book, the enigma, the boy for whom you want to slay his hiding dragons. You'll drown in Grayson and savor the water as you go down.

With Kat's best friend and a quirky director abound there's plenty of characters and story to love in this book. Don't let the three main characters scare you - this isn't a love triangle in the sense your thinking. The angst is driven from Kat and the boy she falls for not from some extensional crisis of which boy is best. This book is Kat's awakening and aftermath of a life she didn't see coming. It's her reckoning. How she'll rise up will be a story I can't wait to read when it comes in Part Two of this duet.

Told strictly from Kat's first person point of view, you'll feel ensconced in her story from beginning to end where you'll want that Part Two right freaking now. But the wait will be sweet torture for an ending that's sure to satisfy. Julie Johnson introduced a new, fascinating trope into her writing repertoire with The Monday Girl once again proving her amazing writing style deserves to read again and again with her gift as an author continually evolving beautifully into addictive, spell-binding romance stories.

Blog Tour Review: After We Fall

SBPR-AWF-BT.jpg
After We Fall by Melanie Harlow
Publication Date: November 28th, 2016
Genre: Contemporary RomanceMHAfterWeFallBookCover5x8_BW_300.jpg
Synopsis:Jack Valentini isn’t my type.Sexy, brooding cowboys are fine in the movies, but in real life, I prefer a suit and tie. Proper manners. A close shave.Jack might be gorgeous, but he’s also scruffy, rugged, and rude. He wants nothing to do with a “rich city girl” like me, and he isn’t afraid to say so.But I’ve got a PR job to do for his family’s farm, so he’s stuck with me for ten days, and I’m stuck with him. His glares. His moods. His tight jeans. His muscles. His huge, hard muscles.Pretty soon there’s a whole different kind of tension between us, the kind that has me misbehaving in barns, trees, and pickup trucks. I’ve never done anything so out of character—but it feels too good to stop. And the more I learn about the grieving ex-Army sergeant, the better I understand him. Losing his wife three years ago left him broken and bitter and blaming himself. He doesn’t think he deserves a second chance at happiness. But he’s wrong.I don’t need to be his first love. If only he’d let me be his last.“Second chances are not given to make things right, but are given to prove that we could be even better after we fall.” —Unknown
TeriLyn's thoughts: **After We Fall generously provided in exchange for an honest review.**

"I think we would have fun anywhere." Stars

Melanie Harlow excels at feel-good romance. The story within the pages of After We Fall ranged a little deeper than her other romances, for me. A ex-military man now organic farmer suffering from PTSD while grieving a loss and a scorned or "sconed" elitist woman who everyday slowly discovers more of who she truly is and wants to be. It's a classic tale of city mouse/country mouse wrapped in a lovingly sweet and sour package. There are moments of true comedy juxtaposed with moments of heartfelt tenderness.

These two characters easily guide you on their journey and before you know it you've finished the whole story. With secondary characters that are equally as engaging the entire cast perpetuates the growth and maturity of the plot. There were several "awww" moments of bliss where hero and heroine alike really melt your heart. The plot is fairly simple and woven in such a way to allow Harlow's writing to really draw you into her words. There's a nice pace and structure for reading this simply sweet romance.

After We Fall is great for all romantics. Readers who enjoy tender romances with good humor mixed though the story and characters who develop nicely will enjoy this sweetly written book from Melanie Harlow. It took me an evening and then a quiet morning to smile my way through the book and I found it a very enjoyable reading experience.
Excerpt:“Wow,” she said, shutting the screen door behind her. “That was close. Thank you so much.” “You’re welcome.” I crossed my arms, wishing I’d thought to grab a shirt. “Want to tell me what you were doing out there?”Her cheeks colored. “Um, I was taking a run.”“Up a tree?”She laughed nervously. “No. Well, I didn’t start out in a tree. That happened later.”I cocked my head, unable to resist giving her a hard time. Not so sure of yourself now, are you, Barbie? “Oh yeah?”“Yes. See, I left the cottage I’m renting without using the bathroom by mistake,” she began, twisting her fingers together, “and I was planning on running a loop around the farm, but it’s bigger than I thought.”“Ah. So you were looking for a bathroom in the woods?”“Well, yes.” She swallowed. “Sort of. But then I heard a splash and saw you…” Her cheeks were practically purple now.I played dumb. “Saw me what?”“Saw you naked, OK?” she blurted, throwing her hands up. “I admit it—I saw you naked.”I had no hangups about nudity, but I was damn serious about my privacy, and about people sneaking up on me. But her embarrassment was funny. The two times I’d seen her before, she’d been so polished and poised. It felt good to put her in her place a little. “So you climbed a tree for a better view, is that it?”Bowing her head, she dragged the toe of one shoe across the wood planks of the porch floor. “Something like that.” Then she looked up at me. Took a breath. “I’m really sorry. I shouldn’t have done that. I was—I mean, I got—I couldn’t—” She sighed, briefly closing her eyes. “I have no excuse. Will you accept my apology?”She was prettier without makeup, I decided. And the way she wore her hair off her face emphasized the wideness of her eyes, the angle of her cheekbones, the arch of her brows. Her lips didn’t need all that glossy crap, either. They were a perfect rosy pink, and I wondered if they’d feel as soft as they looked.Fuck. I hadn’t kissed anyone in three years.Clearing my throat, I took a step back. “Yeah. It’s fine.” Now get out of here. She didn’t move. “So you’re not going to fire me?”“I never hired you.”“I know. But I really want this job. I think I can help, Jack. I know I can.”“Suit yourself. I want nothing to do with it.” My name on her lips was trouble. Needing some distance from her, I started walking toward the dock to get my shoes and socks, but she followed me. God, she was a pest. It reminded me of the way Steph used to tag along after the boys when we were kids, wanting to get in our games.“Are you going to be like this the entire time I’m here?” she asked.“Like what?” “Moody and uncooperative?”“Probably.”“Why? Do you hate me that much?”“I don’t hate anybody. I just don’t see why we should pay some city girl who’s never set foot on a farm to advise us.” We reached the dock, and I leaned down to get my stuff.“I’m not even asking to be paid, so piss off!” she shouted, her voice carrying on the water. I straightened. “Oh, you’re working for free?”“Yes!”“Then you’re an idiot. Or so rich you don’t need the money.”“I’m not an idiot,” she said through clenched teeth.“So you’re rich, then.” I don’t know why I was being such an asshole. But for some reason, I did not want to let her see another side of me, or see another side to her. “I should have guessed.”She crossed her arms. “And what’s that supposed to mean?”“It means you look like you’ve led a charmed life. Like you’ve had everything you’ve ever wanted handed to you. Like you’ve never gotten your hands dirty.”“So get them dirty.”I almost fell off the dock. “What?”“Get them dirty. Teach me about working this farm. I want to learn.”Was she serious? The last thing I needed was to drag her ass around all day, explaining things. Or stare at her ass all day, imagining things. But one look at her defiant face and I shook my head. “Why do I feel like if I say no, you’ll just keep bothering me?”She smiled and clasped her hands behind her back, rocking forward on her toes. “Because I will. I don’t like being told no.”“Of course you don’t.” Jesus, she was trouble. A bad apple—smooth and shiny on the outside, spoiled rotten on the inside. But for no good reason, I found myself giving in. “Fine. Go change your clothes.”

htdeveadamExclusive Excerpt:

While he hauled his motorcycle onto the road, he didn’t look away from her. She stood bereft in the middle of the pavement, staring out over the pasture. Emotions infused the air around her. Shame. Hate. Embarrassment. Sadness. Fear. Desperation.

He recognized that tangled combination of scents. Knew them intimately. Knew the feeling of being hurt and vulnerable and powerless to stop the pain. Knew how memories, like the one he witnessed, had left wounds on her soul and Junior had just ripped off all the scabs.

She was raw, bleeding emotionally in front of him and yet holding it together by a spider’s thread. He could see the effort in the way she stood straight and stiff.

Fury simmered low in his gut. After he got her squared away, maybe he’d pay a visit to Junior. Show the asshole what it felt like to be the victim.

He walked the bike to her. After he straddled the seat, he held out his hand to her. She grabbed him, her grip hungry.

“Climb on up.”

She tossed her leg over the seat, using his hand to balance her weight.

He sat at the same time she did, her body settling against his back.

Holy Jesus. He couldn’t activate the ability to think—his brain short-circuited from her nearness. Everything disappeared but the feeling of her open thighs wrapped around his ass with nothing but a tiny pair of black shorts and his jeans between them.

Her sweet musky scent, almost like honey, but better—way better—folded around him like a celestial pair of wings. The scent of her entered his nose, flowed into his lungs, then out to his extremities, spreading a cooling wave of solace that he wanted to savor, but couldn’t. Not with her perched behind him, waiting for him to drive down the road.

He placed her hand against his stomach, pressed it tightly to him. His abdominal muscles twitched under her touch.

“Hold on.” He let go of her hand and she slid her other arm around his waist. She pressed her front to his back, holding as tightly to his body as she’d held his hand. She was a clingy little thing. Not that he minded. Her touch felt like—what was the word he wanted to use—kismet. Exactly as he’d always imagined a lover’s touch. Two pieces fitting perfectly together.

He kicked the machine in gear, trying to ease it forward instead of his normal burst of speed. She rested her head on his spine, nestling her cheek across the fabric of his shirt before settling.

His heart grew, straining against his chest wall, threatening to come up his throat in a shout of absolute ecstasy.

My name is Mareta L. Miller, and I’m a thirty-something-year-old Las Vegas native. Trust me when I say that growing up in Vegas, is not as awesome as it sounds. I’ve never lived in a casino and I’ve never been a stripper or a showgirl, but I have spotted Elvis no less than twice a day, my entire life. I’m just your average wife and mother of ten. Yup, I said ten, consisting of three daughters, a stepson, three puppies (because mine will never be dogs), two kitties, and a turtle.
I wish I could say I don’t have to work outside of my writing, but I do, and rectifying that fact is on the top of my “When I make it Big” list. Working the standard 40hr week, doesn’t leave much time to write, but I take advantage of every minute I have. Late nights and early mornings make for really long days, but I figure I can sleep later.
My writing, which only started a little over a year ago, has become a constant need. It's been my way to deal with fear, but also a way to create hope. Hope that real love exists and can conquer. It gives me a feeling of accomplishment and I love being able to share my stories with all of you. I hope you’ll continue to follow me on this journey because this is only my beginning. Although my wings have begun to flutter, you’ve yet to really see me fly.Xoxo's,MGoodreads| Facebook| Website jomppromo

When did you decide to become a writer?

I used to keep notebooks filled with short stories starting in middle school. If I’m going to be completely honest they were filled with some pretty risqué stories. I was young and didn’t know much about romance or sex, but my aunt wrote romance novels and I used to sneak and read them, so I tried to emulate her. I didn’t really understand the subject matter. I don’t think I’d even kissed a boy, yet. Once I got to high school, I wrote more mainstream fiction in my spiral notebooks. They were never for anyone to see. Just my own enjoyment. I went to a performing arts high school and funnelled my creativity on stage at the time. But I always knew one day I would publish a book. Why do you write?

I write for the same reason I used to get on stage and sing and act. It’s cathartic. I love diving into different stories and characters. It makes me feel alive. What are your ambitions for your writing career?

To have the freedom to write what I want in many different genres. I hope my readers love my books as much as I love writing them. What has been the hardest part of building your career?

Being patient!Which writers inspire you?

Jojo Moyes, Emily Giffin, Meg Cabot. All their stories and characters are interesting and unique and I love how their stories unfold. The love stories feel authentic and there’s always a bit of fun and laughter. What have you written? (Include books, novellas, short stories, poems, blogs, awards or anything of interest).

My debut novel was the award-winning RomCom, The Misadventures of Catie Bloom. My follow-up novel is The Advenutres of Natalie Bloom, which is the second book in the Bloom Sisters series (but can be read as a stand-alone). I have a blog on my website that focuses on my writing career with day-to-day life anecdotes. When I was trying to get preggers, I had a humor blog called Vagina Vacancy. I also contributed to Natural Awakenings magazine and wrote a column for examiner.com.What inspires your ideas?

Everything! No, really. I never know when an idea is going to hit; I could be on a plane, in a car, watching a movie, reading the newspaper, about to fall asleep. My phone is filled with notes of story ideas. I have at least a dozen. And they will all be written.
Are there any correlations between the books you write and your life experiences?

The Adventures of Natalie Bloom was largely inspired by my yearly trips to Red Frog Beach in Panama. My parents own a place there and it’s a beautiful, unique, inspiring location. The wheels in my head were turning every time I went down there and out of that came this book.

My novel, How to Survive New York on Three Dates a Week (co-written by Corinne Barlow), is the most biographical. Most of the stories are pulled right from our lives. It’s scheduled to be released in early 2018.

All my books have a few anecdotes I took either directly from my life or my friends. If you know me, read carefully…you may find a bit of your life staring back at you!
Do you work from an outline or plot or do you prefer just to see where an idea takes you?

I used to write and see where the story took me. But I found writing for discovery without any kind of outline takes too long. Now I write a short outline before I write any book. It has done wonders for the speed in which I can write a book now. And there’s still a lot to discover, even with an outline.
Tell me about your most recent release.

It’s a romantic adventure about discovering what you and what you’ll do (and won’t do) to get. It’s a bit of romance, adventure, and mystery all tied together. Natalie Bloom discovers to get what she wants she has to fight for it and not be afraid to get hurt…a hard thing to do for all of us.

Is there a message in your novel that you hope readers will grasp? I don’t focus on a message as much as I focus on giving my readers something to indulge in, like sneaking a pint of rocky road ice cream and savouring every morsel as it slides down. But the most prominent theme in Natalie Bloom is not letting fear get in the way of living your life – stand up for what you want and go out and get it, no matter what the obstacles. Any new projects we should look out for?

The third and final book in the series, The Downfall of Catie Bloom, is coming out in the summer of 2017.nb-teaser-2
