Unforgettable – Cycling the Portuguese Camino
This most spiritual of pilgrimages teaches us a thing or two about ourselves. We are indulged. We’re not invincible. Failure happens. It’s not the end of the world.
Cycling the last 278-kilometre leg of the Portuguese Camino on Follow the Camino’s seven-day, self-guided pilgrimage from Porto to Santiago de Compostela is a sometimes difficult, but unforgettable experience.
Below is a screenshot of my story published in Fairfax Media’s The Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age Traveller on November 14, 2017. You can read it online here:

Hydra, art island
The late great Canadian poet and singer, Leonard Cohen’s Bird on a Wire perfectly captured the freedom-seeking zeitgeist of the 1960s. It wasn’t written in Haight Ashbury or Kathmandu or even Goa, but on Hydra.

Brac Island, Croatia – isle of stone and sea
We flock to Greece’s famed Ionian, Saronic and Cycladic islands, but reclining like a goddess off the pointy end of Croatia is Brac, isle of stone and sea, whose bountiful attributes are sometimes overlooked in the rush to Mykonos and Santorini.

Budapest, city of markets
Budapest’s unique soul reveals itself in the dynamic parade of life that revolves around its markets.
In the 1890s, Budapest replaced its 40 small open-air markets with five grand indoor market halls of brick, cast iron and glass. These grand markets were built along the lines of Paris’ Les Halles and in a Hungarian take on the popular Eiffel style.
My Six of the Best Budapest Markets appeared in Fairfax Media’s The Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age Traveller in November, 2017.

Loving Venice to Death
That beautiful city, Venice, is suffering from excessive love – so much so, that its UNESCO World Heritage listing is in danger.

Crossing the Continental Divide by river cruise
A grand river cruise journey from Budapest to Amsterdam climbs the stairs of the Danube to 406 metres, then descends again down the Rhine.
The critical link is the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal and its gigantic 16 locks.
