Brutal Budapest

Budapest is a beautiful city, replete with a cultural abundance and eclectic architecture. But there is a darker side to the city and Budapest recognises this in some of its displays. This is good; history should be remembered, the light and the dark.

Here’s my story, published in The Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age in June 2018. You can read the online version here:

Egypt – Life Returns to the Nile

For seven long years, the Great Pyramids of Giza stood forsaken, the pharaohs’ tombs silent and the historic hotels abandoned after Cairo’s 2011 Arab Spring, as political turmoil and security crises drove travellers from this land of antiquities.

But it is no longer Death on the Nile.

Here is a screenshot of my cover story published on May 27, 2018 in Fairfax Media’s The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age Traveller and online here:

Paradise Found – seven writers choose their heaven on earth

The most threadbare word in travel would surely be “paradise”. But what exactly do people mean when they over-use this descriptor? The simplest manifestation of a traveller’s nirvana is a magnificent location. But one person’s notion of beauty is another’s monochrome.

At Fairfax Media’s Traveller, we gathered together in a cover story the seven places our writers nominate as their particular paradise. I have written the introduction and picked Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools as my little heaven – please click on the screenshot link below. It was published on April 11, 2018 in The Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age Traveller.

Majestic Imperator – the royal train

What is it that still draws people to the days of the golden age of rail, when trains resembled palaces on wheels and royalty travelled in the lap of luxury? Perhaps we simply yearn for peace in a hectic world and the uncomplicated coddling a fine train promises.

That frisson of pleasurable anticipation is palpable as we tread the red carpet to board the Majestic Imperator, a six-carriage Austrian train painstakingly restored to replicate the fabled imperial train of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.

Here’s my story published on April 11, 2018 in Fairfax Media’s The Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age Traveller and online below.

Apologies for the mistake in the penultimate paragraph where the word “providence” is used instead of “provenance”. A reader has pointed this out.

Miltenberg – Germany’s best preserved town?

In a world that relentlessly tears down its history for bigger, shinier, newer iterations, it’s a joy to visit Germany’s Miltenberg and marvel at the history embodied in the pristine half-timbered houses and crooked cobblestoned streets.

Here’s my story published in Fairfax Media’s The Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age Travellers and online below.

Salzburg and The Sound of Music

Salzburg is Mozart’s birthplace. It’s steeped in classical music and its baroque Old Town is world heritage-listed, but its connection to something rather less high-brow is central to its popularity as a tourist destination: the 1965 film The Sound of Music.

Here’s my story published in Fairfax Media’s The Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age Traveller on April 11, 2018 and the link is below.

Bamberg, Germany – where the beer tastes like bacon

Anyone who visits beautiful Bamberg, dubbed the “Rome of Germany” and set on its seven hills, must allow themselves to fall under this ancient spell by indulging in a glass of the traditional beer that tastes like breakfast.
